New Order at Williamsburg Park last week (more by PSquared Photography)
Lollapalooza 2013 happens this weekend (August 2 - 4) in Chicago's Grant Park (and some of it will stream online). We'll be there watching bands on all the stages and hosting them in the Soundwave Tent every day from 1 PM - 3 PM (and from 12:40 on Saturday).
The Lolla line-up is pretty great this year, full of big names with a lot of choices (and the occasional tough decision to be made between competing stages). Here are thirteen bands (plus a few more) we don't want to miss....

Weekend 2 of Coachella 2013 continued on Saturday (4/20), and this time around we caught sets by New Order, The xx, Hot Chip, Danny Brown (who debuted a new Rustie-produced track, "Dope Song," during his set which you can watch a video of below), Action Bronson, Trash Talk, Janelle Monae and more. Pictures of Weekend 2 Day 2 are in this post.

"It was a mixed bag for veteran acts on Saturday. On one hand, The Evens, featuring ex-Minor Threat and Fugazi man Ian MacKaye, drew a respectable (and respectful) Gobi Tent crowd early in the day; the Descendents' influential melodic-punk found a fairly large following at the Outdoor Theatre under the stars; and New Order brought a solid throng along for its night-capping Mojave Tent performance (despite going up against headlining Phoenix and post-rock favorites Sigur Rós, among others). But reunited D.C. garage-soul outfit The Make-Up, underground hip-hop icon El-P and British ska survivors The Selecter played to some of the weekend's sparsest audiences in the Gobi Tent." [Las Vegas Weekly]Coachella 2013, now streaming live, continued on Saturday with the previously discussed sets by Phoenix (and R Kelly) and The Postal Service (Jenny Lewis included), as well as Sigur Ros, Bat For Lashes, Major Lazer, Descendents, 2 Chainz, Savages, The Evens, and many more. Pictures from Friday are HERE and HERE.
UPDATE: Pictures from Sunday are HERE.

The Postal Service brought their reunion tour (with Rilo Kiley's Jenny Lewis in tow) to Coachella last night (4/13). The tour's in support of the 10th anniversary reissue of their only album, Give Up, and they played 8 of its 10 original songs, switching out "Recycled Air" and "Natural Anthem" for "A Tattered Line of String" and "Turn Around," both of which appear as previously-unreleased tracks on the reissue (listen on Spotify). Check out a video of their full set, along with more pictures from the show and the setlist below.

The Postal Service @ Mondavi Center, Davis, CA last night (via @naseemk)
It's a big week for The Postal Service, whose 10th anniversary edition of their sole album, Give Up, was released on Tuesday (4/9). On that same day, the band played their first show of their reunion tour in Reno Nevada. You can watch a few videos from that show, as well as last night's performance (4/10) in Davis, CA, below. You can also watch Ben Gibbard and Jimmy Tamborello talking about how the Postal Service came to be in a short documentary and stream the reissue via Spotify below.
After their performances at Coachella 2013's two weekends, The Postal Service's tour will eventually hit NYC at Barclays Center on June 14 (sold out) and June 15 (still tickets). It has since been announced that Mates of State will open night 1 and Ra Ra Riot will open night 2. Both bands open other dates on that tour as well. This comes after Ra Ra Riot's run with The Shins.
Updated Ra Ra Riot tour schedule, streams and videos below...
Moby's audition did not go well...
As maybe you're heard, The Postal Service are back together for a 10th anniversary tour, including two shows at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. What you may not know is that Ben Gibbard was one of many singers who auditioned for Jimmy Tamborello. Aimee Mann, Moby or even Duff McKagan (plus others) could've ended up in the band... or so this Funny or Die clip (directed by Tom Scharpling) purports which you can watch below.
Meanwhile, a music video and a short documentary about the reunited band are in the works. The title of the doc, according to IMDB, is "10 Years of the Postal Service", and the one and only Tom Scharpling directed it, as he recently told Matt Pinfield:
"I shot two things with them," Scharpling says. "One is a mini-documentary, getting Ben Gibbard and Jimmy Tamborello to tell the story of how this weird band came together and how they were mailing each other CD-R's back and forth. It's a straight mini-doc thing that should be out shortly. The other is a funny video that takes place in 2002, that shows Jimmy auditioning potential lead singers for Postal Service. We got an amazing group of people to come through."Tom's videos are always the best, so we definitely can't wait to see that. Meanwhile check out the video Tom made for one of Ben's' solo tracks.
As mentioned, the reunited Postal Service (with Jenny Lewis and Laura Burhenn in tow) sold out their first night at Barclays Center (6/14) and have added a second show happening at the same venue one day later (6/15). Tickets for the newly added show go on sale today at noon.
A list of all tour dates and a stream of the previously unreleased Postal Service track, "A Tattered Line of String," which features Jenny Lewis, below...
They don't care what Mos Def has to say.... the reunited Postal Service, like Beyonce before them, have added a second Brooklyn show at the Barclays Center! The new date, June 15th, is one day after the previously announced show at the same arena, which is part of a larger reunion tour that includes Sasquatch Fest and Coachella. Tickets to the new date go on sale Saturday at noon, though a pre-sale of some sort will start Friday at 10am (the first date is sold out). Stay tuned for more details.
This news comes just one day after we first heard an unreleased song by the band. Give Up (Deluxe 10th Anniversary Edition) will be released via Sub Pop on April 9.
As mentioned, the forthcoming reissue of The Postal Service's 2003 album, Give Up, contains two previously-unreleased songs, both of which feature vocals by Rilo Kiley's Jenny Lewis. Check out "A Tattered Line of String" below.
Jenny Lewis will also contribute vocals to two previously unheard Postal Service songs -- "Turn Around" and "A Tattered Line of String" -- that will be included on the 10th Anniversary edition of the duo's sole album, Give Up, due out April 9 via Sub Pop. The bonus disc also contains remixes and Iron & Wine's cover of "Such Great Heights." Tracklisting is below.
Other tickets on sale:
Tickets for the Presidents of the United States of America show at Irving Plaza playing their self titled debut in its entirety, with support from Eternal Summers, go on Live Nation/Music Geeks presale today at 10 AM (anyone know the password?). General sale starts Saturday at 10 AM.
Ben Harper and Charlie Musselwhite are playing Beacon Theatre on May 3. Tickets for that show go on sale today at 10 AM.
As mentioned, Thom Yorke and Nigel Godrich are doing an Atoms for Peace DJ set in NYC on March 14. When we first mentioned the show, the venue was TBA, and we now know it's happening at Le Poisson Rouge.
Says the PR
On the heels of a highly successful, critically acclaimed sold-out 2012 festival, the Sasquatch! Music Festival unveils its 2013 lineup, which once again features 4 days of music. The festival, hailed as "a model of well-paced programming...in a four-day schedule as efficient and natural feeling as an expertly built algorithm" by NPR Music while Wired notes, "leave the landscape out of it and Sasquatch! has a lineup to kill for," runs May 24-27 (Memorial Day Weekend) at TheWoot. 2013 Lineup below...

The Postal Service finally returned this year, ten years after the release of their only album, Give Up, and began confirming a few festival slots like Coachella and Primavera Sound. Now they've finally revealed headlining dates in the US and Europe, including one in NYC at Brooklyn's Barclays Center on June 14! Tickets for that show are not on sale yet but check ticketmaster for updates.
UPDATE: Presale tickets are available now via The Postal Service's website.
Rilo Kiley frontwoman Jenny Lewis and Mynabirds frontwoman Laura Burhenn will be part of The Postal Service's live band for this tour. All dates are listed below...
Violent Femmes, who called it quits in 2009, appeared on the lineup announcement. Unlike Blur or The Stone Roses, this is the first we're hearing about them getting back together, so hopefully we'll get some more shows from them. They last played NYC in 2007. Some classic Violent Femmes videos are below.
It wasn't even two full years ago that Nick Cave said he was done with his Grinderman project for a while, and we know that The Bad Seeds are back this year (and also playing Coachella), but he's got Grinderman on the lineup too. Grinderman plays day 1 and the Bad Seeds play day 3.
One of Ian Svenonius' many bands, The Make-Up, reunited last year and played ATP NYC, and they're also included on this year's Coachella lineup. Meanwhile, you can catch Ian in NYC on his book tour tonight (1/25) at LPR and Monday (1/28) at WORD Bookstore.
New Order (without Peter Hook) made their live return last year, and after releasing their "lost" album, Lost Sirens, this year, they were announced for Coachella as well. The way things have been going, we probably can't count on Hook being there, but like Ian Svenonius, you can catch him in NYC on Monday (1/28) for his book talk.
Fellow new wave icons Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (aka OMD) returned in 2010 and they're promising a new album out on April 9, just before Coachella begins. They've also talked about a North American tour, which presumably will be announced soon with dates surrounding the festival.
Dead Can Dance have been back for a bit too, having released a new album, Anastasis, and gone on a tour last year, and they'll be at Coachella this year as well. They're also playing Primavera Sound and just launched a video competition.
Two-Tone legends The Selector (they shared a side of the label's first-ever 7") will play as well. The band have reformed a few times over the years, with different members offer rival versions of the band. Singer Pauline Black and Gaps Hendrickson feature in the line-up coming to Coachella.
And maybe most surprsingly on this list of Coachella reunions is The Three O'Clock who were intregral in the '80s "paisley underground" scene in Los Angeles. Fronted by bassist Michael Querico, the band made 1985's cult classic Arrive Without Traveling, ended up signed to Prince's Paisley Park records where they made one album before breaking up in 1988.
LA hip hop collective Jurassic 5 are also reuniting for Coachella. More on that and other hip hop at this year's festival coming later.

Ben Gibbard on The Colbert Report
Death Cab for Cutie/Postal Service frontman Ben GIbbard appeared on The Colbert Report last night (1/10) to perform the song "Bigger Than Love" off of his 2012 solo album, Former Lives. Ben brought out fellow Tom Scharpling associate Aimee Mann to play bass, sing the first verse, and join Ben on vocals in the chorus. They were also joined by Aimee's pal Ted Leo on guitar and Jon Wurster on drums. Ben also did a solo acoustic performance of "I'm Building a Fire," and like Stephen Colbert's other musical victims, he was interviewed on the show too. You can watch videos of both songs and the interview below.

Jimmy Tamborello, better known as Dntel (or perhaps even better known as one half of The Postal Service), is going on tour this summer with The One AM Radio and Geotic. That tour includes Music Hall of Williamsburg on August 18 . Tickets for the Brooklyn show go on sale Friday (6/10) at noon. All dates are listed below.
On July 5th Dntel also plays a one-off LA show with Seefeel who will be on a rare but short US tour that also visits NYC.
Back at the end of 2010 Dntel released some stuff via his label Sub Pop who also promised more coming soon. They wrote:
On Dec. 7th, 2010 we are releasing new music from Dntel in the form of a pair of companion EPs, entitled After Parties 1 and (very sensibly, given their complementary relationship) After Parties 2. These two EPs collect 8 new Dntel tracks (3 on After Parties 1 and 5 on After Parties 2) which are a bit more minimalist and experimental in nature, all of them instrumental, and feature (to the best of our "knowledge") a list of guest contributors numbering exactly zero. These 8 new tracks are also, we are able to discern even through the mist of biases both personal and professional, really something special.Ben is also doing some touring this summer, recently played Bowery Ballroom, and was on Conan last night.
Both After Parties 1 and After Parties 2 will be available on 12" vinyl and as weightless, odorless digital audio files; neither will be available on CD.
It is worth mentioning here that at some as-yet-undefined point in 2011 we will be releasing an expanded reissue of Dntel's 2001 full-length Life Is Full of Possibilities, which is not only a great record, but notable for, among a great many other things, including the collaboration between Ben Gibbard and Jimmy (on "(This Is) The Dream of Evan and Chan") which led to the formation of The Postal Service.
The One AM Radio released Heaven is Attached by a Slender Thread back in April via Dangerbird. Dntel remixed the track "An Old Photo of Your New Lover" which you can grab above along with "After Parties" from the Dntel EPs.

Was there any Death Cab For Cutie on that mixtape Zooey Deschanel made for Yo La Tengo fans (and charity)? Because, according to US Magazine (and just about every other website on the Internet at this point), she is now engaged to Ben Gibbard! Congrats to the happy couple.

Death Cab For Cutie is coming out with a new album in May 2008. You can watch a trailer for it on their new website.
Also to look foward to in 2008: a collaboration between Death Cab frontman Ben Gibbard and Leslie Feist...
during a recent off day in Louisville, she and her touring band got the itch to roll tape. "We thought, day off? Let's just do something fun," she recalls. "Bowling? A hike? Instead, we rented a studio."For a taste of what Gibbard & Feist sound like together, download the Postal Servce remix of "Mushaboom that is linked on the top of this post - right over that picture of Ben singing with Feist's Broken Social Scene band-mate (and boyfriend) Kevin Drew. That photo was taken by Chona Kasinger at a "Spirit If" show in October - a few weeks before a member of Pavement played with Kevin in NYC..
There, "we took turns and played together," she says. Feist "fooled around on some new stuff" and sang a Grizzly Bear song. She also recorded the basic track for a collaboration with Death Cab For Cutie's Ben Gibbard, which will appear on the "Red Hot and Indie" compilation being produced by the National's Aaron and Bryce Dessner.
