High on Fire at Bowery Ballroom, Nov 2012 (more by Fred Pessaro // BBG)
Sam Velde and Greg Anderson of The Power of The Riff festival have unleashed their thoughts on the past year, giving us with their favorite shows and albums of 2012. Check out their picks from this year below.
Power of the Riff still has one show left in 2012 and as discussed, its a whopper. Look for High on Fire, sunn o))), Corrosion of Conformity, Black Breath, Dead in the Dirt, Loincloth and Void ov Voices to play Henry Fonda Theater in LA on 12/20. Tickets are still available. As you may remember Power of The Riff invaded the East Coast over Labor Day Weekend this year (pics from day 1 HERE, day 2 HERE).
Best of 2012 according to Power of The Riff is below.
sunn 0))) by Greg Cristman
The final day of The Power of The Riff festival at Warsaw in Brooklyn over Labor Day Weekend featured a headlining set from sunn 0 ))) who are currently on the road and played a show at Union Transfer in Philly last night with Dead in the Dirt. If you missed them, take David Pajo's word for it... it was a "Triumphant evil assault!"
The Brooklyn show Sunday also featured hefty names like Winter (with their original organist, his first live show!), Repulsion, Double Negative, Coffinworm, Salvation and Dead in The Dirt. Pictures and video from every set are in this post (day one pics are HERE).
Like Xibalba, Power Trip and Lecherous Gaze did on Saturday night (a show announced last minute via Twitter), Coffinworm and Batillus played an afterparty late at Saint Vitus on Sunday (also announced last minute via Twitter). Video of both after-parties and more pictures and video of from the main show on Sunday, below...

Pentagram / Agnostic Front at Warsaw 9/1/2012
Saturday built upward from Alpha & Omega and Xibalba, young hardcore bands from California; the crowd endured Hoax, from western Massachusetts, a band with only a couple of EPs, whose volatile singer came down from the stage to the floor, inviting physical aggression and getting it. And the lineup worked toward the clomping meat-and-potatoes, early-'80s hardcore of Negative Approach -- established in Detroit 1981, reformed in 2006 -- and Agnostic Front, established in 1980, reformed in 1997, from New York and don't you forget it.Saturday (9/1) was the first night of the two-day Power of The Riff East extravaganza, filling up Warsaw with a mix of doom enthusiasts (there to see Pentagram perform all of Relentless), old school hardcore kids and others who like it loud. Pictures, setlists and video from the show are below.
Agnostic Front's set was the hometown party: beefy guys from the old days at CBGB came out to support the band as it played uniformly streamlined versions of songs from the ratty old records "United Blood," "Victim in Pain" and "Cause for Alarm," responding to calls for circular mosh pits, pumping their fists to the generalized anti-authority chants: "We gotta stick together/and fight 'em all now!" And then many of them cleared out, leaving a sparser crowd for Pentagram, the early doom-metal band from Virginia whose prematurely ancient singer, Bobby Liebling, persists with effort. -[NY Times]

Pentagram - 'Relentless' art
I'm proud to announce that in addition to the special Agnostic Front set at Power of The Riff (all of Victim in Pain/United Blood), Pentagram will perform their classic debut, Relentless, from front to back and for the first time since the 80s! In addition to AF, the doom gods will also be joined by Negative Approach, the newly added Hoax, Xibalba, Alpha & Omega and Power Trip for the first night at Warsaw (9/1). Tickets are still available for 9/1 and 9/2 separately (with a free screened poster) or for a two-day passes with a Southern Lord vinyl pack.
If you missed it, we posted an interview with Scott Carlson of Repulsion.
Stream all of the Pentagram s/t LP below (which was later reissued as Relentless) alongside all tour dates.
Bloodied, battered and unphased, Hoax at LPR in Feb 2011 (more by Sarah Coulter)
Bad news first.... Poison Idea have in fact cancelled their appearance at Power Of The Riff East and all East Coast dates due to medical-related issues. Bummer.
Now the good... fortunately, we have added one of the best bands in punk/hardcore right now in their stead.... Hoax! The brutal Massachusetts crew will now join Pentagram, Negative Approach, Agnostic Front and many others on that Saturday, September 1 at Warsaw, the first of two days at the venue. Tickets are on sale for Sat and Sun (now with a free screened poster for the event), OR you can purchase the newly released set of two-day passes that come with a free Southern Lord vinyl pack that contains an LP or 7" and various other SL offerings.
Head below for some Hoax material, and video of this notoriously violent band live.
We already knew that sunn 0))) and Dead In The Dirt were heading towards NYC for Power of The Riff East, the two-day festival at Warsaw in Brooklyn going down from 9/1 - 9/2 (tickets for day one HERE, day two HERE). But now comes word that the pair have expanded that appearance into a week of shows that stretch from NYC down to Atlanta and includes a stop at Hopscotch Festival.
Dead in The Dirt participated in another Power of The Riff event, our collaboration during SXSW. Check out pictures from that event if you missed it. Otherwise, head below for a list of all tour dates as well as video.

Xibalba's 'Hasta La Muerte' art by Dan Seagrave
If we were to go strictly by the books, I really really should hate Xibalba's Hasta La Muerte. The reality is far different though. The So-Cal crew specializes in simple hardcore that focuses on breakdowns and clearly takes influence from bands of that grew up in the shadow of Madball. Yet Xibalba's absolutely furious vocals and mammoth, down-tuned hardcore stylings set them apart from the pack, making this record unique from the legions of flat-billed, Nike-clad, camo-short-wearing crews out there. Stream all of Hasta La Muerte below.
Don't forget, you can catch the animal-stylings of Xibalba at Power of the Riff East, where they'll team up with Agnostic Front and Pentagram to tear down Warsaw on September 1st. Tickets are still available for their appearance as well as for the second day (tickets here) with sunn o))), Repulsion, Winter and so many others.
Stream all of Xibalba's new LP (available via Southern Lord), and catch them on tour at the dates below.
Updated flyer... now with more Agnostic Front
The circle is complete. BrooklynVegan is proud to announce the final additions to The Power of The Riff East lineup, which will go down 9/1 and 9/2 at Warsaw in Brooklyn. Sadly, Unearthly Trance have just called in quits (their show at Acheron last month, which saw them perform In The Red in its entirety, turned out to be their last) but in their stead we have added another THREE BANDS: Agnostic Front, Double Negative and Coffinworm. The new line-up in full:
THE POWER OF THE RIFF 'EAST'That's correct, Agnostic Front will play all of their landmark Victim in Pain and United Blood records as part of their 30th Anniversary celebration. The set will differ completely from last night's appearance at Webster Hall (7/5) as part of the CBGB fest. On the second night, you can look forward to appearances from the great Coffinworm and Double Negative!
