Hoax at Power of the Riff East, 2012 (more by Greg Cristman)
Hoax

The brutal punk assault of Massachusetts's Hoax gets a video treatment for "Fantasy," which appeared on their recent 7" via Painkiller Records. Just as anti-social as the band itself, check out the fetish-laden video below. Not for the squeamish.

In other Power of the Riff news, look for the latest installment to go down on 12/20/12 in Los Angeles at Henry Fonda Theater. There the band will be joined by High on Fire (who play NYC twice this month), sunn o))), Corrosion of Conformity, Black Breath, Dead in the Dirt, Loincloth and Void ov Voices. Tickets are still available for this whopper of a show.

Check out that Hoax video below.

Power of The Riff

The final day of The Power of The Riff festival at Warsaw in Brooklyn over Labor Day Weekend featured a headlining set from sunn 0 ))) who are currently on the road and played a show at Union Transfer in Philly last night with Dead in the Dirt. If you missed them, take David Pajo's word for it... it was a "Triumphant evil assault!"

The Brooklyn show Sunday also featured hefty names like Winter (with their original organist, his first live show!), Repulsion, Double Negative, Coffinworm, Salvation and Dead in The Dirt. Pictures and video from every set are in this post (day one pics are HERE).

Like Xibalba, Power Trip and Lecherous Gaze did on Saturday night (a show announced last minute via Twitter), Coffinworm and Batillus played an afterparty late at Saint Vitus on Sunday (also announced last minute via Twitter). Video of both after-parties and more pictures and video of from the main show on Sunday, below...

Bloodied, battered and unphased, Hoax at LPR in Feb 2011 (more by Sarah Coulter)
Hoax

Bad news first.... Poison Idea have in fact cancelled their appearance at Power Of The Riff East and all East Coast dates due to medical-related issues. Bummer.

Now the good... fortunately, we have added one of the best bands in punk/hardcore right now in their stead.... Hoax! The brutal Massachusetts crew will now join Pentagram, Negative Approach, Agnostic Front and many others on that Saturday, September 1 at Warsaw, the first of two days at the venue. Tickets are on sale for Sat and Sun (now with a free screened poster for the event), OR you can purchase the newly released set of two-day passes that come with a free Southern Lord vinyl pack that contains an LP or 7" and various other SL offerings.

Head below for some Hoax material, and video of this notoriously violent band live.

But now comes word that the pair have expanded that appearance into a week of shows that stretch from NYC down to Atlanta and includes a stop at Hopscotch Festival.

Dead in The Dirt participated in another Power of The Riff event, our collaboration during SXSW. Check out pictures from that event if you missed it. Otherwise, head below for a list of all tour dates as well as video.

Black Breath leads a singalong
Black Breath

Southern Lord's been keeping plenty busy on the live front with their various Power of the Riff showcases, but have only recently ventured into the wonderful world of curating tour packages. Pleasantly enough, the lineup on this inaugural run is pretty damn unassailable, featuring as it does up and coming SL acts like Enabler and Burning Love (featuring ex-members of BBG favorite Cursed) as well as Swedish crusties Martyrdod and the Entombedcore stomp of Black Breath. The tour tacked on a handful of SL affiliates and friends at various locations (if only Noothgrush could have been magically whisked out to Bushwick), and the NYC date at The Acheron on 7/6 saw Italy's The Secret perform.

The G train is bullshit and I showed up to the gig far later than desired, squeaking my way into the sold-out venue just in time for Martyrdod. Longtime fans in the audience may have grumbled over the band's decision to focus mainly on newer material (including cuts from their latest record, Paranoia, which was recently unleashed courtesy of the 'Lord) but their overall performance was totally on point. Brutal, blackened kängpunk destruction - here's hoping they make it back soon!

Black Breath's reputation as a formidable live act has been cemented a dozen times over by now, but they still saw fit to drive that shit home with a frenetic, captivating onslaught of d-beaten hardcore and shades of vintage Stockholm death. The Acheron's newly-expanded innards were packed tight well before the band even went onstage, and as soon as those first notes were struck, it was chaos. Sweat and blood flowed, hair flew, heads banged, and Black Breath kept on raging 'til the bitter end. -Kim Kelly

======

It was a pretty incredible night at Acheron on July 6th. NYC's Grudges opened the show, mixing up elements of grind, slam, and crust to a respectably large crowd at 8PM. Enabler's Tragedy-influenced hardcore followed, winning over many new fans according to the chatter on the street following. Chris Colohan of Burning Love spent good portion of the show pushing his way through the crowd. The Secret's Converge-y, black metal-tinged hardcore was definitely well received by the raging, headbanging room. And nobody got stabbed. - BBG

More pictures from the show of all the bands, plus video, are below.

The NYC death metal favorites will join the previously announced Dead Congregation, Sanguis Imperem and Dethroned Emperor, and you can get in with a ticket or via a reduced admission with your Martyrdoom bracelet.

We've got a sorta slow few weeks of shows coming up, although there is a ton of excellent punk rock around the July 4th week, not to mention the unmissable Black Breath/Martyrdod/The Secret/Burning Love/Enabler bonanza (now with 100% more Grudges)! Tickets for the latter, which goes down at Acheron on July 6th, are still available. The show is brought to you by BV and Southern Lord, the same dastardly duo responsible for the just announced Power of The Riff festival in NYC.

Shows over the next week worthy of the Evillive seal of approval are llisted below. Otherwise...onward to MARTYRDOOM!

Trash Talk @ Scoot Inn, Austin, TX
BrooklynVegan/Power of The Riff Day Party

The BrooklynVegan/Power of The Riff day show took over two stages at Scoot Inn on 3/16, and one day of the multi-day Converse/Thrasher Deathmatch at the venue. With a ticket price tag of free and a stacked lineup that included High On Fire, Trash Talk, Off!, Ceremony, Deafheaven, Black Cobra, Full of Hell, Dead In The Dirt, Code Orange Kids, Heartless, and Balaclava, its understandable that there was a line around the block for most of the amazing day.

We already posted one set of photos from the show at BV Austin, including shots of Heartless, Ceremony, Balaclava, Full of Hell, and Code Orange Kids. Here are some pictures & video of High on Fire, and Off!, and more of Balaclava, Trash Talk, and Ceremony. Photos of Dead In The Dirt, Deafheaven, Black Cobra, and others are on the way. BrooklynVegan/Power of The Riff/Thrasher Official SXSW Showcase

Directly after the mayhem that was our Deathmatch event at Scoot Inn on 3/16 (first set of pictures HERE; more on the way) BrooklynVegan & Power of The Riff/Thrasher took over the Austin venue for an official SXSW showcase. The night portion was headlined by Black Breath (an exclusive SXSW appearance) and featured appearances from Ringworm, All Pigs Must Die, Narrows (who also played the bridge show), KEN Mode, Enabler and Young and In The Way. The overall brutal vibe of the day continued into the night with ripping performances from top to bottom, circle-pitting, and hardcore scream-a-longs.

Young and In The Way's "American Blackened Crust" opened the showcase a bit past 8PM, drawing from black metal in both tendency to blast as well as in symbolism, ferocity and costuming (see the inverted cross of bones). Young and In The Way may be a relatively young band, but they are wise beyond their years in creating dark atmosphere to accompany their taut and razor sharp odes to negativity.

Following YAITW was Enabler, a Milwaukee band that contains members of Harlots and Fall Out Boy (no shit). They draw from the melodic d-beat of bands like Tragedy in their take on crusty hardcore. The band are preparing a new LP All Hail the Void for release in May, so look out for that and make sure to catch them on the road soon.

KEN Mode played only two shows in Austin this year, and thankfully our showcase was one of those. The band's noise-rock meets hardcore aesthetic has always been great, but now with a more stable bass player (Andrew LaCour) it seems that the band has hit its stride on the live stage. LaCour's animated stage antics work well for the band too, adding to the wide-eyed maniacal glances that guitarist/vocalist Jesse Matthewson throws to the audience over his microphone.

On paper, Narrows is a fantastic sounding band; members of Botch, Unbroken, and more collide to form a hardcore supergroup. Thankfully, the reality is as indelible as the concept.... in fact better. Since I saw them kill it at Cake Shop close to two years ago, Narrows have gelled into an entity all its own, a thought cemented with their latest and highly-reccomended release on Deathwish, Painted (out now). As a live band they are similarly amazing; is there anything as pleasing to a hardcore kid as screaming into a microphone along with Dave Verellen?

All Pigs Must Die is similar in concept to Narrows, a "supergroup" comprised of the jaw-dropping sticksman Ben Koller (Converge), the raspy throat of the energetic Kevin Baker (The Hope Conspiracy), guitarist Adam Wentworth (The Red Chord, Bloodhorse) and bassist Matt Woods (American Nightmare, Bloodhorse). While any band with Ben Koller is worth a look just for his jaw-dropping skills behind the kit, APMD rise above that with songwriting and a live show that is similarly impressive in its intensity. Scoot Inn was no exception; these guys rule.

Ringworm has been around almost as long as their fellow Clevo-core natives Integrity (21 vs 24 years!), and its clear that their live show has been honed over time to a fine point. The band's thrash-y hardcore crossover incited circle pits and mosh mayhem during their set, reminding us why the band are veterans of their scene. Amazing live band, and now with Aaron of Keelhaul back in their ranks, they've never sounded better.

Batting clean-up was Black Breath, the Seattle band that fused groovy Swedish death metal with hardcore vocals and aesthetic. They opened their set with personal favorite "Black Sin", and the band's live show is as potent as their LPs. If you've never seen Black Breath then please do so right away.... word is they may be on the road in the near future. One of my major highlights of the weekend.

I'd like to thank all of the bands that killed it at Scoot Inn on 3/16, the staff at Scoot Inn for being so helpful/accomodating, my partners for this show in Power of The Riff and Thrasher, and most importantly everyone who showed up to support the show and the bands and to have a good time.

More pictures from the Friday night show at Scoot Inn is below.

March 16th, March 16th, March 16th! If you're going to be in Austin, save the date on your calendar folks! On Friday March 16th, 2012 at Scoot Inn (1308 e4th St), BrooklynVegan, The Power of The Riff, and Southern Lord will combine forces for a MARATHON of events that kickoff at noon and end waaaaay after the sun goes down.

The FREE daytime portion, in conjunction with the four-day Thrasher/Converse "Death Match" event at the venue, is an all-ages shindig that will kick off at noon and feature a skateramp with skaters and bands all day long. Shortly after doors open, expect to see eleven bands across two stages including sets from the following:

* High on Fire
* Off!
* Trash Talk
* Black Cobra
* Ceremony
* Deafheaven
* Full of Hell
* Heartless
* Balaclava
* Dead in The Dirt
* DNF (members of Trash Talk, Touche Amore)
That's right... High on Fire AND Off! Not to mention the food trucks, a full bar, and so much more to keep you fed and hydrated (or buzzed, depending on your poison) during the onslaught. Stay tuned to BrooklynVegan for details regarding the official night showcase (it has been announced), and for more about the day show (or our OTHER day show on Saturday at Lovejoys), including set times. Pentagram @ Mezzanine (by Taylor Keahey)
Power Of The Riff

"The headliners for the Power of the Riff fest were none other than doom legends Pentagram. I wasn't quite sure what to expect from them as Victor Griffin hasn't been in the band for a long long time and they've had a revolving door of musicians for quite some time now. Also, I wasn't very into their latest comeback album Last Rites, so I was a tad skeptical I would enjoy their performance. The one thing I did know was that I was more than ready for Victor to lay down some serious doom riffage. They opened with new song Treat Me Right off their latest and right away sounded fantastic. Bobby Liebling's voice has certainly held up over the years and he was belting out classics like Relentless, Forever My Queen and All Your Sins like they were going out of style. Victor's evil riffs rained down upon the crowd who eagerly lapped them up and were thirsting for more after each song. For the encore they came out with The Ghoul before finishing with two more before letting the audience catch their breath. As for my skepticism, it was smashed to bits and a serious appreciation for what they've meant to doom and metal in general was cemented in me with their performance. I hope Pentagram continues on down the dark path for a while more...." [ILSYDHT]

Masakari

Masakari's fiery live show has a new clip of ammunition. The Cleveland band have teamed with Germany's Alpinist to release a new split LP due via Halo of Flies and in the EU via Alerta Antifascista. The latter two make their premiere here, and one is via Crustcake. The song, all tour dates and the album art are below.

Noothgrush
Noothgrush

In case you missed it, yes you read right, a Noothgrush reunion!

Noothgrush is a sludge/doom band formed in early 1994 around San Jose, California, USA. Lyrically, they are heavily focused on self-hatred, general misanthropy and Star Wars.

The band name is a reference to the Dr. Seuss book "There's A Wocket In My Pocket", where a "noothgrush" appears annoyingly on the main character's toothbrush.

Noothgrush went on a hiatus in 2001. They briefly resurfaced in 2006. -[last.fm]

Noothgush 2011 is Gary Niederhoff, Russ Kent, and Chiyo Nukaga. Stay tuned for a forthcoming Noothgrush release on Southern Lord called: Live For Nothing. It contains 2 college radio broadcasts from the 90s.

Matt Harvey, who played in Noothgrush, recently played Maryland Deathfest as a member of Exhumed, a member of Gravehill, and of Cretin. Check out a full set by Noothgrush in 1996 at Killthatcat.

As previously discussed, Power of the Riff LA happens on 8/13, and with Pentagram, Winter, Pelican, Trap Them, Masakari, All Pigs Must Die, Masakari, Alipinist, Acephalix, and the recently added Black Breath, Harrassor and Plagues. Tickets are on sale.

In addition to Power of the Riff shows, All Pigs Must Die are scheduled to play a TBA Brooklyn show with Converge on August 25th (thanks Hiro). Details are forthcoming.

In the meantime, pick up a repress of APMD's debut EP and look for details on All Pigs Must Die's new LP God Is War below. The LP is due on Southern Lord on August 16th, but we'll have a stream of a new song on BrooklynVegan this week!

All details on the upcoming Power of The Riff shows, tour dates and song streams are below.

Goatsnake: Greg Anderson raises his axe in praise of the riff
Goatsnake

Think of Sunday's (8/6) all-day Power of the Riff Festival at the Echo and the Echoplex as less of a celebration of heavy metal and more of a mission statement. The objective: Raise respectability for the perennially underground hard rock genre.

"I've been a fan of heavy music for as long as I can remember," said Night Horse singer Sam James Velde, who organized Riff Fest with Southern Lord head Greg Anderson. "I hope this will increase awareness and opportunity for bands of this nature to be able to play. You look at bigger festivals like Coachella, and you have a token heavy band. There's Dillinger Escape Plan, or there's Mastodon. But there's no tent dedicated to that music. Yet metal, hardcore and true rock 'n' roll has an incredible fan base. This is something to try and make a strong impact." -[LA Times blog]

I couldn't agree more, and a gang of people showed up to the 2010 Power of The Riff Festival in Los Angeles last week. With sets from Goatsnake, Corrosion of Conformity III (who are coming to NYC), Repulsion, Trap Them, Black Breath, Nails (who will support Venomous Concept), and many more, the Converse-presented show was free to the public with RSVP.

More pics from the show are below...

Speaking of LA, they have another noteworthy festival happening in August, though that show focuses more on the heavier side of things. August 8th will mark The Power of The Riff Fest at The Echo and Echoplex in LA with the return of Corrosion Of Conformity III (aka Animosity era!), Goatsnake, From Ashes Rise, Trap Them, Repulsion, Nails, Coliseum, Black Breath, Eagle Twin, Early Graves, and many others. The Converse-presented show is FREE (wow), but requires an RSVP. Poster and full lineup below.

The original 3-piece Corrosion of Conformity also have a handful of other dates scheduled around that time. Unfortunately none on the east side of the coast (for now), but they are listed below. Three of the dates, including The Power of the Riff, are being called the "Southern Lord West Coast Tour" which all include the lineup of Goatsnake, Eagle Twin, and Black Breath (poster below).

Nails will be in Brooklyn on September 23rd alongside Strong Intention and Venomous Concept at Europa. Tickets are still on sale. Nails are also on the lineup of Philly's 3-day This is Hardcore Fest.

Unfortunately most of this stuff does not include NYC action, though we have two sunn o))) & Boris shows to look forward to, not to mention Boris/Russian Circles/Torche, and SLEEP. Coliseum was just here last week.

Dates and stuff below...
