Kanye in mask (via Buzzfeed)
Kanye West did a three-night run in Atlantic City at Revel Ovation Hall from December 28-30. He performed completely alone on stage, without backup dancers, DJs, or a band, with widescreen projections of nature scenes behind him. The scenes changed a few times throughout the show, as did his outfits, which at certain points included two weirdly awesome masks -- one covered in diamonds and one covered in mock snow and/or feathers. For the set he stuck mainly to the hits, which at this point in his career results in a pretty long show, having touched on "Clique," "Mercy," "Power," "Jesus Walks," "Heartless," "Gold Digger," "Stronger," and many more.
At night 2, he gave a freestyle/rant during "Clique" about his criticism and about not receiving more major nominations in the 2013 Grammys. And on night 3, Kanye stopped in the middle of "Lost in the World" and asked, "Can we make some noise for my baby mama right quick?" implying that Kim Kardashian is pregnant. Neither Kanye or Kim have explicitly announced anything, but Kim's sister Kourtney later tweeted, "Been wanting to shout from the rooftops with joy and now I can! Another angel to welcome to our family. Overwhelmed with excitement!"
Kanye's friend/collaborator Jay-Z plays Barclays Center with Coldplay tonight for New Year's Eve. Maybe 'Ye will make an appearance? (though he probably has something better to do).
Videos of Kanye's "Clique" rant, his "baby mama" announcement, other songs from the show, the setlist from night 1, and another mask pic below...
I'm delighted to announce that Simon and I are expecting our first child together. I wanted you to hear the news direct from me, obviously we're over the moon and very excited but please respect our privacy at this precious time. Yours always, Adele xx."Congrats Adele!

"King Tuff totally rocked it at the knitting factory tonight.
Glad I didn't miss it!" - BeyondBeyondisBeyond
King Tuff (aka Kyle Thomas who also happens to be in Witch and Feathers and Happy Birthday) headlined (an actual birthday party) at Knitting Factory in Brooklyn last night (1/20) with support from Frankie Rose & The Outs and Nude Beach. That's Tuff above, and more pictures of the show are below.
Nude Beach (the NY band) will join Nomos and The Men for a FREE show at Generation Records at 2PM on Sunday (1/23). Nude Beach is replacing Pregnant on the in-store bill, who recently dropped off of the show but is still scheduled to play Cake Shop on Mar 18 with Black Wine & Big Eyes. Bone up for Cake Shop by checking out their self-titled LP, out on vinyl now, but you can preview that LP on digital form above.
Generation Records is also a bit of a homecoming show for Nomos and The Men, as both bands recently came back from a two week tour of the West Coast which saw them share dates with Mammoth Grinder, Hatred Surge, Skin Like Iron, Walls, and many others. Both bands released LPs in 2010; Nomos dropped Notes From The Acheron in September (order it) while The Men are currently on their second pressing of Immaculada after initially releasing it in May (snag one).

Forgetters at Red 7 in Austin (more here)
Few hardcore and punk shows to put on your radar....
Forgetters will team with Oi band Hard Skin and Boston hardcore The Rival Mob for a killer three-way at Europa on Oct 22nd. Tickets are on sale. The show is one of three on Blake Schrazenbach's horizon. Forgetters will also play Cake Shop with Pregnant, These Days, and Bells on 9/10 and support Obits at Knitting Factory on 11/12. Their first 7" is out on September 21st.
Word is that Veins (with Mark McCoy of Das Oath, Charles Bronson, etc) was originally on the Hard Skin bill, but had to drop off, and speaking of Mark McCoy, his other project Failures has another show coming up. Australia's Straightjacket Nation will headline 538 Johnson with Failures, Vile Gash, Scapegoat, and Confines on 10/2. Veins, which also features members of Drunkdriver, Das Oath, and Castevet, recently pressed their great cassette on 7" vinyl. Pick up a copy via Youth Attack, it rules.
Speaking of Youth Attack, Brutal Chicago hardcore band Raw Nerve released their incredible self-titled LP on the label earlier this year. Though copies of that are long gone, you can still catch the band when they headline Acheron on 10/16 along with Manipulation, Perdition, and Concrete Cross (members Disnihil/Celebrity Murders).
And last but certainly not least, look for a double dose of Danish Hardcore punk from Hjertestop when they play NYC twice in early November. On 11/8, look for the band to play The Charleston with Night Birds, Nomos, and Crazy Spirit while 11/9 gets Acheron with Swedes Fy Fan! and Crazy Spirit.

Sarah and Shara...
New Amsterdam Records is pleased to announce a very special evening of complete performances of two upcoming albums by two of our co-Directors: Sarah Kirkland Snider's PENELOPE, featuring the extraordinary vocalist Shara Worden (My Brightest Diamond) with New York "supergroup" Signal (conducted by Brad Lubman), and William Brittelle's TELEVISION LANDSCAPE, featuring an ensemble comprised of members of Alarm Will Sound, NOW Ensemble, The Long Count, and more. This very special evening will take place on Saturday, April 3rd at the Bell House in Brooklyn. Check out one song from each, above. Tickets are on sale.
The show is the only chance to hear Penelope performed live by Shara and Signal any time soon. They promise it won't happen again until at least after the album comes out in August which is probably around the time that Shara Worden also officially becomes a mom. Shara's recent busy-while-pregnant schedule has included sets with Clogs and her own band, My Brightest Diamond, at Big Ears, as well as a surprise appearance with Regina Spektor (and Nicole Atkins) at Irving Plaza.
"Regina Spektor was joined on stage for duets with Only Son's Jack Dishel, who beatboxed the h-e-double hockey sticks out of "Hotel Song." Jersey native, Nicole Atkins, sang her heart out choosing a new song, "Towers," over the audience requested favorite, "Neptune City." Shara Worden (My Brightest Diamond) rocked while timing her "pregnancy breaths" into performances of "Inside a Boy" and "Feeling Good." Spektor delighted fans with favorites like "Après Moi," "Us," "Blue Lips," On the Radio," "Fidelity," "Better," "Music Box," "Eet," and "Laughing With." Her rendition (lyrics in hand) of "Hallelujah" was hauntingly gorgeous. She ended the evening with "Samson" and graciously thanked her string section, all the performers, and the audience for supporting such an important cause." [quasihip]Congrats to Shara and her husband. Videos from that show along with more info on the pieces being performed Saturday, below...

Marissa Paternoster (Screaming Females) @ DBA in Feb. (more by Leia Jospe)
"Holy Hell, the first official Noun release, incorporates keys, organs, and toned-down guitars and drums. The result is clearly different than Screaming Females: it's mellower, more melodic, and whereas the Screaming Females' songwriting process is a three-way discussion, Marissa Paternoster writes all of the songs for Noun. The The 12-track solo album, whose title track you can download above, will be relesaed in June 2010 on Don Giovanni Records who are holding another showcase in NYC. Last time it was one big show at Bowery Ballroom (forgetters and Jeff the Brotherhood were both on the bill). This time they're doing two nights in a row at Mercury Lounge (April 24-25).
Similarly to Screaming Females, Marissa's friends are an important part of Noun. Holy Hell features drum work by Angela Boylan (of Cheeky), Miranda Taylor (Hunchback, Black Wine, Full of Fancy), and Jarrett Dougherty (Screaming Females), plus bass lines by King Mike (Screaming Females). Her Mom designed the artwork, and her friends at New Brunswick label Don Giovanni are releasing the record. "
April 24th will will feature a headlining set by Screaming Females who are currently being advertised as "special guest" probably due to their April 9th show at Irving Plaza with Obits and Ted Leo. The Measure, Barrakuda McMurder, Byrds of Paradise, and Modern Hut are also on the bill. Tickets are on sale.
April 25th is headlined by Shellshag and will feature a set by Noun, as well as sets by Full of Fancy, Black Wine, and Pregnant. Tickets are on sale. All dates below...

John Oates & The Bird & The Bee & the baby @ the El Rey Friday night
The Bird and the Bee, a jazzy [L.A.] synth-pop duo, has a fantastic single (with an unprintable title) ["Fucking Boyfriend"] imploring a hesitant beau to be a real boyfriend already. It's a sassy chastening of noncommittal dudes. But when vocalist Inara George sings it while very clearly pregnant, as she did at the sold-out El Rey Theatre on Friday, the tune has an even blacker sense of humor. The Bird and the Bee played L.A.'s The El Rey Friday (3/5), where John Oates made a surprise appearance during their Hall & Oates-heavy set, which is fitting considering that the duo's new record is a Hall & Oates tribute album. Interpreting The Masters Volume 1: A Tribute To Daryl Hall And John Oates comes out March 23rd on Blue Note. The album has eight covers and one Bird and the Bee original. Their version of "I Can't Go For That" is streaming exclusively below. That track, album tracklist and more pictures from the LA show, below...
"This song has more meaning when I'm like this," George said, pointing to her stomach to room-wide chuckling. Her husband, the director Jake Kasdan, may have protested that he made it official a long time ago. But it was one of many arched-eyebrow moments in a set of smart, fluffy pop made by two talents not taking themselves at all too seriously.
The pair's El Rey set was heavy on Hall & Oates numbers, and though indie rock has long since resuscitated that band's reputation as secret songwriting savants, George and Kurstin revealed them as crack arrangers as well. Kurstin's an effortlessly gifted keyboardist, and alongside a sprawling backing band (featuring opener Juliette Commagere, very able with guitar and vocal duties), the group dug deep into hits such as "Kiss on My List" in ways that snide hipster peers couldn't replicate. Then she came back to do her own set which segued right into N.E.R.D.'s short set which closed the whole night Hot Chip played much earlier - only a few of their own songs before they became Chaka Khan's backing band. Moldy Peaches @ Central Park Summerstage, 2002 (m. norr)
Tickets are STILL on sale for tonight's Kimya Dawson show at Music Hall of Williamsburg (July 2, 2008). It's a benefit with a bunch of bands on the bill that only costs $20, and for what it's worth, it's in a smaller venue than her last and next NYC shows *.
Has the Juno buzz worn off a little? It should be strong now that there's all this pregnancy talk that has "the Most Successful Indie Film in Six Years" back in the news. Maybe parents are afraid to let their kids near Kimya....
With a lot of attention on teen pregnancy these days, parents can use the news to talk about sex and pregnancy with their children. Here are some tips from experts.Juno is the new Judas Priest. Okay, I made the last tip up (not the one before it though), but young girls across the world are apparently watching Juno and getting Knocked Up like crazy... or are they?
- Have age-appropriate discussions about sex. Answer their questions openly and honestly.
- Talk about teen pregnancy. Ask your kids what they thinks about "Juno" and Jamie Lynn Spears' pregnancy, says Bill Albert, spokesman for the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy....
- Throw away your kids' Moldy Peaches albums...
Juno" actor Jason Bateman has defended the Oscar-winning movie against claims it has encouraged teenage girls to get pregnant.Adam Green and Ozzy Osbourne could not be reached for comment...
He tells "Access Hollywood," "I don't know the specifics, but I can speak about what sort of responsibility entertainment should hold for social behavior.
"Unfortunately, we've had these instances where guys kill people because of what they hear in rock 'n roll lyrics or some garbage like that. Look, if you're going to blame a movie or song for your actions, whether they be good or bad, I think you're looking at the wrong things to influence your life.
"What we're doing is providing entertainment in different flavors for your consumption. I think people should look to other areas of their life for lessons and guidance, mainly parents, or teachers, or friends, or whomever. That should probably be where you should point your eyes and ears." [SFGate]
16 yr old Jamie Lynn Spears isn't the only one
Popstar, tabloid favourite, chat show host. Lily Allen will soon be able to add mother to that list after the singer confirmed she is pregnant with her first child.
A spokesman for the 22-year-old said the pregnancy was at a "very, very early stage" and confirmed the father is Allen's boyfriend Ed Simons, one half of the Chemical Brothers.
Allen, whose single Smile went to number one last summer, has spoken on numerous occasions about her desire to start a family and leave music behind, in some accounts by the age of 25. She recently told the Sunday Times: "I'd like to live in the country and have a walled garden, and chickens and pigs."
As well as confirming the pregnancy, however, Allen's spokesman said that her second album, the follow-up to 2006's Alright, Still, would be released next year as originally planned.
Simons, 37, and Allen have been together since September of this year and are said to be "thrilled" by the news.[Guardian]
