Now Age Karaoke

On 11/11/11, for their third and final installment of their artist residency, Prince Rama will herald in the end of the world by way of karaoke. Using the number one hit singles corresponding with the dates of eleven different predicted "apocalypses" such as Heavens Gate, Jonestown, and Y2K, they will "chop and screw" the songs to a point beyond recognition and invite anyone who wishes to participate to perform the resulting pieces. -[Issue Project Room]Congrats to Prince Rama, who celebrated 11/11/11 (National Metal Day to some) at Issue Project Room with one of the only events to successfully merge Jim Jones, fresh pairs of Nikes, Screw Music and everyone's favorite sake-fueled past-time into a single event. Songs like Britney Spears' "Til The World Ends", Faith Hill's "Breathe", and The Bee Gees' "Stayin Alive" help keep the apocalyptic theme running.
Prince Rama kicked off a tour with Indian Jewelry one day later (on 11/12) at Cameo in Brooklyn. Prince Rama play Brooklyn again at Glasslands on February 23rd, though knowing them they'll play before then too. Before then they'll also visit Australia and many other places.
All tour dates, more pictures from possibly the world's first apolayptic karaoke party, and the band's new video for "Golden Silence", below...

Lichens at Brooklyn Masonic Temple (more by BBG)

As previously mentioned, Prince Rama and Lichens will perform at Ace Hotel tonight (2/12) as part of a 'Sup Magazine release party. The show is free, but RSVP is "recommended".
Lichens (aka Robert Lowe) is also playing Union Pool on Feb 27th with Kevin Hufnagel and Bruce Lamont and Cocaine & Abel. $10 gets you in. Hufnagel is currently recording the new Gorguts LP in Canada (!).
Kevin Hufnagel recently played a show with Religious to Damn and Tamaryn who again team up for a show next week at Don Hill's.
Lichens played a show at Glasslands in January with Thank You who return to play Death By Audio tonight with Double Dagger and Dustin Wong.
Dustin Wong (who you should definitely check out) was on the bill when Nightlands played their first-ever show at Glasslands recently. As Bill pointed out, Nightlands play their second-ever NYC show tonight (2/12) at Glasslands with Philly's Sun Airway, Warm Ghost, and Dinowalrus.
Tonight's Ace Hotel show is one of three upcoming NYC Prince Rama dates. You can also find them at Bowery Ballroom on Feb 25th supporting Suckers and at Glasslands on March 2nd when they start their next proper tour.
Prince Rama's labelmate Panda Bear just released a song from his new album.
"What's Going on Saturday?" is on the way. In the meantime, check out This Week in Indie for more shows happening tonight (2/12).
Some video, the Sup flyer and updated Prince Rama tour dates are below.

Panda Bear's new album "Tomboy" will be out on April 12th via Paw Tracks. "This is one week earlier than the originally announced release date - it was moved up so that the record will be available for Record Store Day on April 16." That's the cover art above. The full tracklist is below along with a set of fellow Paw Tracks recording artist Prince Rama tour dates (Glasslands included) (and some Animal Collective dates too)...

Prince Rama's intentions are great: blending Native American tribal drumming, Eastern Indian mantras and cathartic howls, fantastical synth bits and a dose of pixie dust to make a cacophony of a melting pot played by the likes of two sisters, Taraka and Nimai Larson, and one guy, Michael Collins. It's all a little bit Kate Bush meets Bat For Lashes, a little bit Gang Gang Dance, but sadly, the voices constantly seemed off pitch so any attempt at musical grandness became kitsch, at least tonight...Neon Indian headlined Brooklyn Bowl on 10/29 with Prince Rama and Apache Beat, part of a Halloween celebration at the venue that included a costume contest. The show was one of a few for the chillwave-r, who continues his tour in Buffalo (11/4) before calling it quits in Ithaca right after that. Neon Indian will then jet across the Pacific to play a string of shows around New Years leading up to an appearance at Field Day 2011 in Sydney. The true cosmic dance party only began when Neon Indian took the stage. At this point, Brooklyn Bowl was packed and filled with half Halloween revelers, half frat types looking to pick up gals in itty bitty costumes. The night improved the more we focused on the stage and sound and let Alan Palomo's theremin as well as his pulsating beats, dreamer croon and the band's spacey pop take over. -[Sentimentalist]
The NYC show was at the beginning of a NYC Halloween weekend that also included Mr. Brownstone at the same venue one night later (turn down your volume and check out a bad cell phone video), and a Sunday night Todd P show at Ridgewood Temple which partially overlapped with the big parade.
Prince Rama have no NYC dates until December when the band will team up with Deakin (who opened for Omar Souleyman last night) to play The New Museum on 12/10 (tickets). The Brooklyn band will spend the days leading up to that appearance in Europe. Full (updated) tour dates are below.

Lia Ices @ Bowery Ballroom

"The sweetest white lie of the CMJ Music Marathon came from the folky songwriter Lia Ices, leading her band at the Lower East Side club Pianos on Thursday night. While half the crowd chatted indifferently, she sang, "For only you I sing, for only you." Yet Ms. Ices, whose debut album is due in January, was playing CMJ, along with more than 1,000 other groups, for precisely the opposite reason. She was seeking a chance to be heard, sooner or later, by a larger audience." [NY Times]Neon Indian co-headlined the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars?) Group CMJ showcase at Bowery Ballroom on Saturday night, 10/23. After a super long week of shooting day and night, Amanda didn't make it to their midnight set. She did get to the show though and caught openers Braids (6pm), Fake Problems (6:45), Lord Huron (7:30), Lia Ices (8:30), Lower Dens (9:15), and Wild Nothing (10:00). She left before Dom. I also went to the show but got there close to when Neon Indian was finishing (I caught Surfer Blood's entire 1am set).
Did you miss Neon Indian too? The next chance to see them is tonight (10/29), at Brooklyn Bowl where they're playing with the buzz-tacular lineup of Prince Rama and Apache Beat. Tickets are still on sale, and I have a pair you can win.
Details on how you can win, with tonight's flyer (under the pics), and more pictures from the Bowery Ballroom show (sans Neon Indian), below...

Dent May @ BV-CMJ 2009 (more by Chris La Putt)

A few nights earlier, I tried and failed to see Dent May at a late-night show, but I figured I'd give it another shot, so I headed over to the Cake Shop after the BrooklynVegan CMJ show at MHOW Thursday night, and was delighted to see that they were running on schedule. I thought I was tired at that point, but I've got to hand it to Dent May and his friend Bobby for their dedication to the cause. "We drove 20 hours straight to be with you. Our car got towed. We've been threw a lot of shit, and we love it," May said by way of introduction. A quick look at Bobby's zombie-like stare as he sat, waiting for the show to start, revealed just how tired he was. In addition to their lengthy sojourn to New York, it was their last show of the week and the third of the day. Luckily, their music is upbeat and undeniably catchy. When they started to play, they sprang to life, and many of the people in the audience began to dance.
Dent May doesn't have any more dates on his schedule, but he is on the lineup of the just-announced All Tomorrow's Parties curated by Animal Collective taking place May 13th-15th at at Butlins Holiday Centre in Minehead, UK. Full initial lineup announcement below...

Prince Rama at Glasslands (more by Benjamin Lozovsky)

If you nerd out on vinyl as much as I do, then you might take a step away from all of this CMJ nonsense to pop in to the WFMU Record & CD Fair at The Metropolitan Pavilion (125 West 18th St in Manhattan) which kicks off on Friday (10/24) at 4PM (for early admission) and lasts through the weekend. In addition to killer records, crucial trades, and melted Mastercards strewn across the fair's 30,000 square feet, the annual WFMU Record Fair will also have video, live broadcasts, and live music with names like Prince Rama, The Hamburglars, Ted Leo, Butts, Fabulous Diamonds, Dan Friel, and others among the performers. Full details are below.
Besides the WFMU show, Prince Rama also has SIX other NYC dates, four during CMJ and two that aren't. Their CMJ week will kick off at Cake Shop tomorrow (10/20) as part of the Terrorbird CMJ show with Marnie Stern, Baths, Revolver, Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. (who just played Conflict of Interest), Kyle Andrews, Botany, Dark Dark Dark and Kordan. Later that night the Brooklyn Trio will be at Don Pedros for one of the many Impose Magazine parties, this time at Don Pedro's with Woodsman, Lower Dens, Talk Normal, Prince Rama, PC Worship, and Ancient Ocean. Thursday (10/21) will see them at Cake Shop for the previously discussed Carpark / Paw Tracks CMJ Showcase with Deakin, Light Pollution, Dent May, Excepter and others. And finally, on 10/22 Prince Rama will play the night show at Death By Audio with Greatest Hits, Woven Bones, Teen Inc, Excpeter, John Maus, and a DJ set from How To Dress Well.
After CMJ, Prince Rama will join Neon Indian & Apache Beat for a show at Brooklyn Bowl (10/29, tickets), followed by The New Museum on 12/10 where the trio will again accompany Deakin of Animal Collective (tickets).
All Prince Rama and Ted Leo dates, some video and set times for all known and previously mentioned parties (including the big Impose flyer) are below.

Deakin @ Glasslands

"Just got back from it. Didn't stick around for the cowboys & indians dance party, though I probably should have. I was faced on mushrooms the whole night and felt like the place was being overrun by 16 year olds. Twice some dumb scantily-clad broads approached me to ask if I'd buy them drinks cos they were only "20". This was very different from the demographic I imagined Prince Rama and Deakin would be playing for.The show described above too place in Massachusetts on Tuesday. The show pictured in this post took place place at Glasslands on Monday (9/13), one night earlier. It was Deakin of Animal Collective's first NYC solo show with an assist from current tour/label mate Prince Rama, and Silk Flowers and Amen Dunes.Really bummed out about the arrest of Michael from Prince Rama, and the subsequent abridged setlist. But still they sounded really amazing, and Deakin's set was very cool. It's a shame most people there didn't seem to give much of a shit about the live music.
Can't believe I didn't stick around longer. What did I miss? But don't tell me a bunch of half naked 18 year old girls with face paint prancing around, beseeching older men to buy them drinks. Because I was there for that.
P.S. I was the awkward weirdo in the blue hoodie.
-dreamlight molecule
The trek continues for Prince Rama/Deakin, who play Montreal tonight and scoot across the west coast until the end of September. After that, Prince Rama will then link up with Light Pollution for another tour that kicks off in Chicago in early October before they both play NYC on 10/21 as part of the Carpark/Paw Tracks CMJ Showcase at Cake Shop. More details on that showcase TBA.
It's unclear why the guy from Prince Rama got arrested, but the above account makes at least three times I heard about it.
Prince Rama's new LP, Shadow Temple, is out now via Paw Tracks, dig on one track from the LP, "Lightening Fossil", downloadable above. Light Pollution's new LP, Apparitions, is out now also, and features "Witchcraft" available for download above.

Deakin & Avey @ PS1 on July 31st (more by Andrew St. Clair)

Hot off their sets at PS1, Animal Collective's Deakin and Brooklyn's Prince Rama will be going on tour in September. The trip kicks off with a September 13th show at Glasslands with Silk Flowers and Amen Dunes. Tickets are on sale.
I think Glasslands will be Deakin's first non-DJ solo show in NYC. His first-ever solo show took place in Baltimore at the beginning of the year. The Brooklyn show is also a release party for Prince Rama's new LP, Shadow Temple, which comes out on AnCo's Paw Tracks label the day after. A track from it is above. Prince Rama have a few NYC date before that too - their full schedule is below.
Also with a new album is Avey Tare, whose debut solo record, Down There, comes out October 26th on Paw Tracks. Avey deejays at Glasslands on Friday, September 24th on a bill with Crocodiles (who have a new record). RSVP for that.
As previously mentioned, Panda Bear's 9/11 show at Governors Island is still on sale. His record Tomboy comes out in September. All dates below.
Animal Collective's film collaboration with Danny Perez, ODDSAC, is screening at IFC Center on August 6th and 7th at midnight. You can also buy the DVD which is out now.
No Geologist news (vacation?).

The Big Takeover, Avi Buffalo, CFCF, Amen Dunes, Grass Widow, Ducktails & more in This Week in Indie
by Bill Pearis

DOWNLOAD: CFCF - Big Love (MP3)
DOWNLOAD: Grass Widow - Shadow (MP3)

This weekend is The Big Takeover's 30th Anniversary celebration: two nights of shows at the Bell House put together by Jack Rabid who has been publishing the 'zine since 1980. Jack's one of the most passionate, informed music fans I've ever met and he's put together a pretty stellar line-up of artists, most of which will be familiar to regular BT readers.
Friday night (7/30) is headlined by San Francisco punk legends The Avengers, and Seattle's Visqueen, and the first performance in 16 years by Flower (Ed and James Balyut's pre-Versus band). Plus the L.A. punks Channel 3, the Libertines U.S. (from Cincinnati) playing their first-ever Big Apple show, and Jack Rabid's band Springhouse.
For Against

Saturday night (7/31) is even more action packed. Former Chameleons frontman Mark Burgess headlines, performing acoustic and with a full band; legendary Lincoln, NE post-punk shoegazers For Against, playing their first East Coast show in 15 years; and Springhouse performs again, this time doing their 1993 album Postcards from the Arctic in full. Also: Former Nerves/Beat singer Paul Collins, a rare U.S. appearance by ex-Mutton Birds frontman Don McGlashan, onetime Newtown Neurotics singer Steve Drewitt (first-ever U.S. show), and the Posies' Jon Auer. Also also: The Sharp Things, The Sleepover Disaster (first-ever East Coast shows) and The Curtain Society.
You can still buy two-day passes for $40 as well. (Individual tickets are $25.) If you've never read The Big Takeover, well you should really recitify that. Each phone book sized issue (twice yearly) is packed with in-depth interviews, reviews and essays, the bulk of which is still written by Jack. The magazine's slogan is "Music with Heart" and he means it, man. The 30th Anniversary issue (#66 if you're keeping track) is just out with Spoon on the cover. Like always, it's a great read.
Avi Buffalo

Avi Buffalo play the Seaport Music Festival on Friday, their only New York appearance this go-around. Their self-titled Sub Pop debut is an impressive collection of shimmery, folky guitar pop that has stayed in constant rotation on my stereo since March. Live, Avi Buffalo put a little more muscle into the tunes. Front man Avigdor Zahner-Isenberg is a Doug Martsch in the making. (You get a sense of it on the LP's seven-minute jam "Remember the Last Time.") Dude uses like 15 pedals and is a pretty serious shredder. I thought they were great at South by Southwest. Yes they are barely old enough to buy cigarettes (not that they should be smoking!) but that just means Avi Buffalo haven't even hit their stride -- which is exciting.
Opening is Canadian multi-hyphenate wunderkind (and Sub Pop labelmate) Chad Van Gaalen who hasn't made a new record of his own in two years but has probably stayed busy being an illustrator, animator, and producer of Women. Unlike last Friday, weather looks to be idyllic Friday (sunny, high of 84) -- should be a lovely early evening on the pier.
CFCF

Despite the preponderance of reverbed garage, twee indiepop and '90s era slackerdom in this column, I do listen to a fair amount of dance music though I'm not really a club-goer. One of my favorite albums of 2009 was Continent, the full-length debut from CFCF, aka Vancouver beat-maker Michael Silver. It's an ambitious disc of instrumental, yet highly melodic dance music without even a trace of chillwave. (Though there's definitely some Balearic in there.) It's ridiculously catchy, and you may find yourself singing overtop tracks, making up your own lyrics (Well I do anyway.) Annie, Roisin, Robyn, etc... may I present your new collaborator?
You can download CFCF's great cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Big Love" at the top of this post -- the only vocal track on Continent. Silver, who is also an in-demand remixer (on the new HEALTH album for instance), is in town this weekend for a bunch of DJ gigs. You can hear him spin Friday night (7/30) at Cameo Gallery with Jacques Renault and Lovefingers, and then the PS1 Warm Up on Saturday (8/31), where Animal Collective also DJ, plus live performances from Prince Rama and Blondes.
Grass Widow

If you're going to Prospect Park for Sonic Youth on Saturday, do get there early and catch Grass Widow as it's their only NYC show for now. The San Francisco trio's new album, Past Time, is out August 24 on Kill Rock Stars. It could use a few more choruses but gets by on the band's very distinctive sound. You can download "Shadows" from the new album at the top of this post and watch its lovely animated video at the bottom of this post. Grass Widow are teriffic live -- it will be interesting to see them on such a big stage. If you can't make it, they'll be back in September for two shows (Sept. 27 -28, venues still TBD). All tour dates at the bottom of this post.
---
And some daily picks of things not otherwise covered above:
THURSDAY, JULY 29
The Music Slut has been blogging away for five years and they're celebrating on a boat! Specifically, the Rocks Off Concert Cruise ship and they've put Javelin, Keepaway and I Love Monsters aboard it. Boat leaves at 7pm, don't be late. Happy birthday, guys.
Coco 66 has a night of bliss-out drone, noise, old synthesizers, psychedelic freakouts, and tribal chanting all in celebration of the release of Amen Dunes' new album, Murder Dull Mind, which is out on Sacred Bones. Also playing Gary War, recent Paw Tracks signees Prince Rama (who are at PS 1 Saturday), and Coconuts. Open vodka bar at 9PM till it runs out.
Over at Silent Barn, you can catch locals Sisters whose debut album, Ghost Fits, is out in September on Narnack Records. Also playing: Knight School, Nude Beach, Giant Peach.
Meanwhile at Union Pool, there's CYHSY offshoot Radical Dads, Rope and The New Colossus.

Nite Jewel, photo by Justin Loy

Nite Jewel, Ramona Gonzalez and collaboratot Cole M. Greif-Neill, have a new EP, Am I Real?, out digitally now (and on vinyl August 16th). It's streaming on their site currently.
"In the last two years, somewhere in between the bedroom & the studio proper (the living room?), the 6 songs of 'Am I Real?' were made and the tape hiss barely made it (please see b-side opener 'Falling Far'). Featuring subtly re-vamped & improved selections from last year's hard-to-obtain 'You F O' euro tour cd, the ep also offers the newer fully established ornate melancholy of 'Forget You & I' and the sophisticatedly restrained funk of the closing title track featuring Daniel & Andrew Aged of Teen Inc. Also found on this release are the further benefits of master facilitator & now-official NJ band member Cole MGN." Jason Darrah, Gloriette RecordsThe group is reportedly working with with Dam-Funk and others on a second album due in the way off future of winter 2011.
Nite Jewel's upcoming tour dates include an August 9th show at Mercury Lounge with Violens and Prince Rama. Tickets are on sale. Then they have a double blast of shows on Saturday, August 14th. The first is a gig opening for Neon Indian, Prefuse 73 and Dom at their free Beach at Governors Island show. The second is a headlining show at Glasslands with The Samps, Blood Orange and Arp (who recently played Warm Up at PS1). Tickets are on sale.
Arp, as Pitchfork points out, "will release his latest full-length. The Soft Light [on] September 14 via Smalltown Supersound". An MP3 from that album is above...
"Leading up to the release of The Soft Wave, Alexis Georgopoulos [aka Arp] composed his first score for modern dance in Replica, a duet between Merce Cunningham and Trisha Brown dancers, which debuted at New York's New Museum. He played a live score to artist Doug Aitken's film Migration at 303 Gallery (New York), participated in the Boredoms-curated 8.8.08 88-drummer extravaganza in Los Angeles, and remixed Lindstrøm. His music was featured in director Gary Hurstwit's film Objectified. He also made music in Q&A (formerly Expanding Head Band), his new DFA project with partner Quinn Luke, and his band The Alps released two albums III & Le Voyage (Type) to critical acclaim. ARP shared bills with Cluster on the coast of Big Sur, Sonic Boom, White Rainbow, Four Tet, Lucky Dragons, Growing, and Wooden Ships, among others. The track "Potentialities" from In Light was recently featured on James Holden's DJ KICKS. Most recently, he released FRKWYS Volume III, a collaborative album with minimalist composer Anthony Moore, as part of RVNG's new FRKWYS series. The duo recently performed with a string section as part of New York City's Wordless Music Festival."All tour dates, Nite Jewel EP art and both album tracklists, below...

Pocahaunted

Los Angeles' dub/psych/tribal/etc outfit Pocahaunted are in town for two shows this weekend -- Saturday (6/12) at Glasslands and Sunday (6/13) at Pianos. The band has expanded to a five-piece following the departure of Bethany Cosetino (now of Best Coast) and released their second album, Make it Real, earlier this year. You can check out an MP3 at the top of this post.
Prince Rama

Both shows feature Brooklyn's Prince Rama who make blissed out ambient drone, and whose debut album is due out this September on Paw Tracks.
Also playing both shows are Austin trio Sleep ∞ Over . The latter are making their first visit to NYC and have a new 7" is out now on Forrest Family Records (label from the Gorilla Vs Bear/Weekly Tape Deck folks). You can download the A-side at the top of this post. It's dreamy, ethereal stuff and comparisons to Beach House aren't off the mark. In addition to the Pocahaunted shows, Sleep 8 Over are also playing a free day show at Co-Op 87 with Future Shuttle and Baltimore's Lower Dens . That starts at 3PM.
Lower Dens

Lower Dens is the new band from Jana Hunter (Matt & Mossy, Castanets) and their quite wonderful, seriously good debut album, Twin Hand Movement, is out next month on Devendra Banhart's Gnomonsong label. And you can download a Future Islands track at the top of this post.
