Flying Lotus

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight's shows, but here are some highlights...

Flying Lotus, Jon Hopkins, The Big P.A. & Spins @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
This sold out, intimate show is a benefit for the David Lynch Foundation and it brings together two of today's best electronic musicians: the jazz/hip hop-leaning Flying Lotus and melodic IDM beatmaker Jon Hopkins.

Hurray for the Riff Raff @ Carnegie Hall
While we're still waiting on Hurray for the Riff Raff's TBA new album, their 2014 release Small Town Heroes is still an excellent update of traditional country that sounds nostalgic and modern all at once. Tonight they take on Carnegie Hall.

Mothers, Palm, Banned Books, Jonah Furman @ Palisades
Mothers have earned themselves a few Angel Olsen comparisons, and if you like Angel you're probably gonna dig their upcoming album When You Walk A Long Distance You Are Tired. Tonight's their first of two NYC shows ahead of its release.

Muse @ Prudential Center
Few bands embrace bombast and cheese the way Muse do, a band who have never seen "more" as a four-letter word. (They also seem in on the joke.) If you can embrace the cheese as well, their grand guignol live show can be fun.

Future Punx, Scam Avenue, WALL, Order of Operations @ Shea Stadium
If you like early '80s mutant new wave like Devo, Oingo Boingo and Wall of Voodoo, Future Punx take that aesthetic and refract it through a modern prism. Their debut, This is Post Wave, is a lot of fun. So is their live show.

The Giraffes, Happy Fangs, Gran Puta @ Saint Vitus
Brooklyn riff-rockers The Giraffes broke up in 2011 before reforming last year, and they released new album Usury back in October, which is finally just got a vinyl release. They celebrate it's release tonight.

Man Forever, TIGUE @ Greene Space
The 2016 Ecstatic Music Festival kicks off tonight with this collaborative performance between Man Forever -- percussion project helmed by John Colpitts (aka Kid Millions) -- and avant-pop band Tigue. They'll be premiering new collaborative works for percussion and voice inspired by the 1971 album Moondog II. If you can't make it to the show, it's being webcast live at 7:30 PM.

Cheena, Latisha's Skull Drawing, JJ Doll, Ursula, Haram @ Alphaville
Local punks Cheena have quite the impressive resume. Noise musician Pharmakon is in the band, as are members of Crazy Spirit, Dawn of Humans, L.O.T.I.O.N., and Hank Wood & The Hammerheads. Needless to say, they can rip.

Omar S, Generation Next, John FM, Analog Soul, Turtle Bugg @ Good Room
Deep house musician Omar S made one of the genre's recent standout albums with 2013's Thank You For Letting Me Be Myself. Tonight he returns to NYC to shake the floors of Good Room.

Pictureplane, Psychoegyptian, DJ Dog Dick, Geng, Eaves, Tre Special, See Voux Play, Sess_World, Vitamin Z @ Trans-Pecos
Pictureplane recently wrapped up a tour with HEALTH, and his latest album isn't too far removed from theirs with its industrial-tinged pop. His live sets lately have also been crazier than ever.

50 Cent @ B.B. King's
50 Cent's sadly more well known these days for taking shots at Meek Mill on Instagram than he is for his new music, but there's no denying he was unstoppable for a minute there in the 2000s. And that old stuff lives up great. Tonight's the first of two NYC shows this weekend.

Buster Pointdexter @ Cafe Carlyle
New York Doll singer David Johansen puts back on the tux and his party-friendly Buster Poindexter persona for a night of saucy cabaret at this fancypants supper club.
For all of tonight's shows, and tomorrow's, check out our NYC concert calendar.

Wet, Kelsey Yu @ Rough Trade
If you're going to this sold-out show, do get there in time to see Kelsey Lu, who makes beguiling music with just her voice, a cello and a loop pedal.

Robyn Hitchcock @ Landmark
Robyn Hitchcock is the kind of performer that can entrance with a full band or just an acoustic guitar. Or less. He's always worth seeing and he continues to make great records, too.

For laughs, check out the NYC Comedy calendar too.

What else?

Sam Amidon at SXSW 2011 (more by Tim Griffin)
Amidon

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight's shows, but here are some highlights...

Sam Amidon, Bill Frisell, Shahzad Ismaily, Cy Dune @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Sam Amidon just released Lily-O, an album of reimagined folk songs featuring jazz legend and Bill Frisell on guitar, as well as frequent collaborators Shahzad Ismaily (he and Sam are both in Doveman's band). Those three will be playing together tonight as well.

Fat White Family, Jeffrey Lewis @ Bowery Ballroom
The wild, debauched world of Fat White Family returns to NYC after leaving their stink all over the place back in March. The band's new single, "I Am Mark E. Smith" lays influences pretty clear and is good in its own right (stream it below).

Xiu Xiu, Yvette @ Glasslands
Jamie Stewart's experimental, confrontational music as Xiu Xiu maybe be too much for some people, but it is never boring. Catch him tonight with very intense locals, Yvette.

Frankie Cosmos, Porches, No One and the Somebodies, Eskimeaux @ Baby's All Right
It's the second night of related bands Frankie Cosmos and Porches' two-night run at Baby's and this time Frankie headlines. Like last night, it's another all-in-the-family show, this time with Eskimeaux (aka Gabby Smith of Frankie Cosmos' band).

Pond, Doctopus, Fascinator @ Rough Trade
They may share members/ex-members with Tame Impala, but don't call Pond a side project. Some would argue they're better at the psych-rock game. (We like them both.) We're not sure when Pond's new album, Man, It Feels Like Space Again, will actually be released (it was supposed to be already) but you can probably catch songs from it tonight.

Ben Frost, Julianna Barwick, Oneirogen @ The Wick
Avant-garde composer Ben Frost released new album, A U R O R A, earlier this year and, like his previous work, it's ambient but you'd be hard pressed to call it mellow. There's a lot of tension here, which cracks open into bursts of noise. Tonight's well-curated show is the first in Pitchfork's new "Tinitus" series. You might want to consider earplugs.

Amon Amarth, Sabaton, Vallenfyre @ Best Buy Theater
Swedish viking metal band Amon Amarth and Swedish power metal band Sabaton's tour hits NYC tonight, and this is a special night on the tour with support from Vallenfyre, the death/doom supergroup with members of At the Gates, Paradise Lost, My Dying Bride and Extinction of Mankind.

Skeletonwitch, Black Anvil, Evoken @ Saint Vitus
Party metallers Skeletonwitch have been on the Amon Amarth/Sabaton tour themselves, but tonight they're taking the chance to headline their own show at the smaller Saint Vitus. Tonight's with NYC black metal crew Black Anvil and funeral doomers Evoken.

Paul Collins Beat, Club For Growth, The #1s @ Cake Shop
Power pop lovers, here's one for you with former Nerves frontman headlining and very good Irish band The #1s starting things off.

The Soupcans, Slutever, Girlpool, Pink Wash @ Death By Audio
This is a great bill all around with Toronto's ripping Soupcans, two LA duos Slutever and Girlpool (currently on tour with each other), and Bleeding Rainbow/Hume-related Pink Wash.

Rakta, S.H.I.T., Survival, Mommy @ Palisades
This is the second of two NYC shows this week for Brazil's Rakta who play a loud, raw mix of gothy post-punk and tripped out psychedelic rock.

Daedelus, Spazzkid @ Villain
Production great Daedelus is currently on the road supporting his new album for Brainfeeder, The Light Brigade, and hitting rarely-used but cool Williamsburg spot Villain tonight.

The Empty Hearts, Party Lights @ Knitting Factory
The Empty Hearts are the supergroup of Blondie's Clem Burke, The Cars' Elliot Easton, The Romantics' Wally Palmer and Chesterfield Kings' Andy Babiuk. As you may expect from a lineup like that, it's late '70s-style power pop.

Busdriver, clipping., Milo @ Mercury Lounge
This is an excellent triple bill of out-there alternative hip hop, and all three are supporting new releases -- Busdriver's Perfect Hair, clipping.'s CLPPNG, and Milo's a toothpaste suburb.

Psychoegyptian, Haleek Maul, Dre Green, Neuport, Ponyo, EU1OGY @ Trans-Pecos
Trans-Pecos has a typically eclectic bill tonight mostly with rap, electronic and alt-R&B.

Hatsune Miku @ Hammerstein Ballroom
Comic Con was last weekend but surely this woulda fit right in, a computer-generated Japanese hologram singer (with synthesized voice) playing with a live band. No, really.

Bill Cosby @ The Paramount
Comedy legend and fancy sweater lover Bill Cosby has gotten a little preachy with age but is still a funny guy. One of the greats. He'll do two performance tonight.

Leisure Cruise, Mister Lies, Frances Cone, Summer Underground, DJ Toy @ Brooklyn Night Bazaar
Brooklyn Night Bazaar is always a good place to stop by at night for drinks, midnight snacks, arcade games, and shopping, not to mention free music. Tonight's lineup leans towards electronic pop.

Blue Oyster Cult @ The Space at Westbury
Hard rock veterans Blue Oyster Cult's influence is undeniable and they have no lack of great tunes to pull from at tonight's show on their hometown of Long Island.

Finch, Maps & Atlases, Wounds @ Gramercy Theatre
While we're not crazy about the headliners, math rockers-turned-indie popsters Maps & Atlases are always worth catching.

For all of tonight's shows, and tomorrow's, check out our NYC concert calendar.

Mykki Blanco

As mentioned, NYC rapper Mykki Blanco is playing a hometown show at Mercury Lounge TONIGHT (1/16) before heading out on a European tour. Since we last spoke, openers have been added for tonight's show, including Boychild, Psychoegyptian, Fatherhood (who also opens for Laurel Halo and Teengirl Fantasy soon), and Dope Body. Tonight's show is sold out, but you'll have another chance to catchy Mykki in NYC later this year at the larger Bowery Ballroom on April 2. Tickets for that show go on sale Friday (1/18) at noon. It's Mykki's only announced North American date that we're aware of at the moment.

A stream of Mykki's 2012 debut mixtape, Cosmic Angel: The Illuminati Prince/ss, and an updated list of dates, are below...
