UK music weekly NME has just published its end-of-year issue, with their Top 50 LPs and Tracks of 2013. As for the albums list, we'll let you read on to find out what their #1 pick is, but it might just be the one NME called "absolutely and unarguably the most incredible album of [said band's] career" and "the greatest record of the last decade." It's not Palma Violets, who were last year's Track of the Year, as their debut LP came in at #32 on the list.
As for tracks, their single of the year is a pretty obvious (certainly ubiquitous) choice. Check out the full lists of NME's Top 50 LPs and Tracks below...

Things are going great for Morrissey whose new book is selling like crazy. The new Issue of NME, as you can see from its cover above, features "The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time." The UK music weekly picked these for the Top 10:

It means emailing a vast array of alumni from across the NME generations, from the sixties swingers through the hip young gunslingers of the 70s right up to today's troupe of rock'n'roll toreadors, and begging/bullying them to submit lists of their favourite fifty albums of all time. Some joined in, others were too busy/famous now, but we managed to gather together around 80 voters to submit lists, at which point the serious number-crunching began.One of those 80 was '90s-era NME editor Johnny "Cigarettes" Sharp, who talked to The Quietus about how he came up with his ballot (and these kind of lists in general):
I and the rest of the NME alumni were simply told to vote for our 'favourite' albums - Ideally a top 50 but really anything we could rustle up by the following Monday.The mag does have a sense of humor about all this. The bottom right corner of the cover has a picture of Morrissey saying "...until the next 500." NME is publishing the whole list -- in not annoying slideshow format -- throughout the day and you can click through 500 - 401, and 400 - 301 right now. Their top 50 are listed below....
And herein lies a flaw inherent in all such lists: The results are bound to be slanted towards the choices of the voters who they happen still to have contact details for, which will inevitably be the more recent contributors (Still, having first written for them over 20 years ago, they didn't do too badly tracking me down).
Inevitably, with the whole thing being a bit last-minute and no-budget, the votes were also those of individuals who could be arsed to sweat over a difficult task in their free time for no financial reward. Welcome to 21st century publishing.

Ex Cops DJing at Other Music, RSD 2012 (more)
We're about a week out from Record Store Day 2013. When it began in 2008, RSD was a celebration of brick-and-mortar stores in the face of digital downloads, offering up exclusive releases to get people out to stores. It's blown up considerably since then, with hundreds of RSD-only releases. (Many of which fall into the hands of folks who turn it around on Ebay that same day, but what can you do?) While it is a mob scene these days, there is no doubt it helps what record stores there are left -- though not enough, as Record Store Day will be the last day for Williamsburg's Sound Fix. Participating stores around the country are listed here.
There are always some pretty cool exclusives too, items that may have never seen the light of day without RSD. With that in mind we've gone through the list of North American RSD exclusives to highlight a few things to keep an eye out. This isn't comprehensive, just stuff we wanna get. What records are you trying to get this year?

James Murphy, El-P, Jarvis Cocker
The second of two S.S. Coachella cruises set sail off the coast of Jamaica last week (12/19) and returned on Sunday (12/23). (The first set sail from the Bahamas on 12/16.)
Day 1, pictured in this post, was headlined by reunited britpop greats Pulp and also included sets by The Rapture, Cloud Nothings, James Murphy (DJ), El-P, Simian Mobile Disco, and others. We didn't catch Grimes on day 1 but pictures of her set at day 2 are on the way. Killer Mike also played day 1 but unfortunately we missed him. The venues on the cruise were all pretty intimate, which was especially great for Pulp fans who got to see them in a 1,400 capacity theater with great lighting. The other venues had darker lighting but the sound and intimacy made up for any other shortcomings.
Before S.S. Coachella, Pulp played a hometown show in Sheffield where they gave their fans Christmas cards which sent them to this link, which was activated with a download to a new song on Christmas Eve at midnight, according to Pulp fansite Bar Italia. The song was actually a re-recording of an old Pulp demo, "After You," and it was done with fellow S.S. Coachella sailor James Murphy.
Writer Nathan Stout was aboard the cruise as well and he told us a bit about Pulp's set:
A neon sign reading 'PULP' in huge letters swings back and forth on stage as Jarvis Cocker rips off another piece of clothing. He shakes his hips then falls on his back, puts his forearm on his brow, squirms, and thrusts the air...all to the pleasure of hundreds of screaming fans. It is the first night of the S.S. Coachella. We are front and center, proudly wearing our neon hats. Only a few feet separate us from Jarvis and Pulp. We are drunk (but not belligerent or reckless) and living in the moment; every ridiculous moment. We dance. We yell. We exchange glances of excitement and approval. Welcome to music fan heaven. The Celebrity Silhouette is largest and newest of the Celebrity Cruise Lines' fleet. The vessel weighs a whopping 122,400 tons and holds 2886 people. It was obviously built with luxury in mind. There are two large swimming pools on the top deck, four hot tubs, a lawn made of real grass, chairs, hammocks, basketball courts, a theater, restaurants, clubs, food everywhere, drinks everywhere, and as many servants as cruise patrons. Concert cruises are all the rage lately, and this is in fact real.
Indio, CA music festival Coachella continues for two weekends in April, 2013. But just because they've decided to keep the fest in Indio, doesn't mean they can't take it on a couple of cruises as well. As seen in the picture above, S.S. Coachella will set set sail off of the Bahamas from December 16-19 and off of Jamaica from December 19-23. The lineup (thus far at least) includes Pulp, Hot Chip, Yeasayer, James Murphy (DJ set), Grimes, Cloud Nothings, Killer Mike, El-P, Sleigh Bells, Father John Misty, and more.
Holy Ship sails in January too.

M83 / The Black Keys / Refused
"Coachella's new dueling weekends have unwittingly started a bitter turf war between those at the festival now and those who plan to come next week.After sets by Jimmy Cliff, Madness, Kendrick Lamar, Jimmy Cliff, Arctic Monkeys, EMA, Ximena Sarinana, Gary Clark Jr, Death Grips, and many more, night fell and the massive crowds at Coachella's first of two Fridays were treated to sets by Pulp (setlist & video HERE), Mazzy Star (more on their set in a second), Refused (more on their set HERE), The Black Keys (setlist below), M83, Amon Tobin (more about him HERE), and others (that we didn't get pictures of).
In years past, if you were the socially adept, party-minded type, you could pretty much bank on the fact that all the cool kids in your social satellite system would be somewhere on the Empire Polo Field, in line for Spicy Pie pizza, or wearing next-to-nothing at the Ace pool party.
This year, however, a text bearing the age-old Coachella rallying cry, "Dude! VIP lounge, now. Shots!" has a 50% chance of being met with the reply, "Dude. I'm coming next weekend. Too bad for you cuz it's so cold there right now."" [LA Times]

Jarvis Cocker & adoring fans @ Radio City Music Hall - 4/11/12
Well, that was excellent... Jarvis Cocker wiggled and pranced around the room in his natty suit, geek glasses and Cuban-heel boots, a brazen showgirl in the body of a pervy librarian. Who else besides Jarvis would get cheers from a New York audience by announcing it was the anniversary of The Great Gatsby's publication in 1925? And who else would recite lines from the book while throwing Snickers and Milky Way bars into the crowd? "There are only the pursued, the pursuing, the busy and the tired," Jarvis said, quoting from Gatsby as a preface to "Something Changed," one of Pulp's big love ballads. "And if you are one of the pursued or the pursuing, this one's for you."We >previously posted the setlist from the second of two nights, and now here are the pictures from Pulp's show last night at Radio City Music Hall (4/12) (though unfortunately none of opener Jeffrey Lewis) (venue rules).
But everybody in a Pulp song is always pursued and pursuing, which is why their songs hold up so smashingly. They barely ever played the U.S. in their heyday, and Jarvis' superb solo shows haven't featured any Pulp material since the band split in the early 2000s. So ever since the band reunited the vintage "Common People"-era lineup, American fans have been waiting for this moment. -[Rolling Stone]

Pulp played their second of two shows at Radio City Music Hall last night (4/11), and though the setlists were pretty similar with the same amount of songs, they mixed it up a bit. This time "Misshapes" was played at the end of the encore instead of at the beginning of the show, "Bad Cover Version" was played in the encore instead of "Live Bed Show", and they played "Monday Morning" instead of "Party Hard." "Jarvis is a bit older now, but he still has it. He's an extraordinary performer, in part because he's such a specific character, and he's so fully comfortable in his skin. I think the very best rock stars are the people who impose their quirks on to the role rather than conform to the expectations of the job. He created his own archetype, but he belongs in a pantheon of the great oddball rock gods alongside Michael Stipe, David Byrne, Elvis Costello, Stephen Malkmus, Black Francis and James Murphy. Watching him in action is inspiring - his sort of confidence seems somehow attainable, whereas more traditional rock, pop and rap stars make it seem impossible and superhuman. Even in his biggest anthems - "Mis-Shapes" and "Common People," both of which presage the sentiment of the Occupy movement by nearly two decades - Cocker is at a human scale even as the music soars. Extremely lanky, yeah, but human scale." Chromatics debuted songs from their "Best New Music" endorsed album Kill for Love last night at club Le Bain in the Standard Hotel. With wraparound Manhattan views, it was a pretty spectacular setting. No less breathtaking, in its own way, is Radio City Music Hall where tonight (4/10) Chromatics will open for Pulp. (Probably to an indifferent, half empty hall. Here's your chance to sneak up close, Chromatics fans.)
Despite what Jimmy Fallon said last night on his TV show, tickets are still available for tonight's show. (Good ones, too, if you're willing to pony up the dough.) Jarvis is keeping busy. One day after he finished a run of shows at the Whitney Museum, and one day before two shows at Radio City, Pulp appeared on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon (last night, 4/9/2012). They performed one song on air, and one off. Watch both below...

"...In the latest iteration of "Who's Zoo?," performed on [Thursday, Friday, Saturday & Sunday] at the Whitney Museum of American Art, with professionals alongside nondancers, the biggest improvement is live music: Relaxed Muscle, a two-member band featuring Jarvis Cocker (of Pulp) and Jason Buckle, perform four of the show's six songs.That's a snippet of the NY Times review of Michael Clark's "Who's Zoo?".
With the addition of live music and a cult-of-personality approach -- not only by the spectacularly louche Mr. Cocker, but also by Mr. Clark, who has given himself more cameos this time around -- "Who's Zoo?" is less of a dance than it ever was. Now Jarvis just has one day before Pulp headlines Radio City Music Hall for two nights in a row, with two different openers. As mentioned, Chromatics open Tuesday's show while Jeffrey Lewis & the Junkyard opens Wednesday.
MEANWHILE, it looks like Chromatics play a semi-private, it's-going-to-be-really-hard-to-get in show at The Standard's Le Bain tonight (4/9) while some band called "The Junkyard" plays Cake Shop (with Dolfish and SLFM).

Now both musicians will team up as part of the "Alone Together" tour - An Evening of Solo Works - with Gregory Rogove (Devendra Banhart, Priestbird, Megapuss) and Billy Martin (Medeski Martin & Wood), though Colin Stetson will NOT be on the first few dates of the tour that stars in Brooklyn at Littlefield on Saturday (4/7) and also hits Le Poisson Rouge on April 10. Tickets for the Littlefield show (no Stetson) and the LPR show (no Stetson) are on sale now.

Neufeld will present her unique and vibrant solo violin pieces, Martin will perform his impressive array of spontaneous percussion/drum set compositions, Stetson will perform his spell-binding solo bass saxophone work, and Rogove will play his minimalist, solo piano pieces, from his recently released PIANA album (Knitting Factory Records).All tour dates, the live Stetson video, and video of Sarah playing with Pulp in 2011, below...
Meanwhile, Jarvis is already in NYC and preparing for a different kind of performance taking place at the Whitney Museum from April 5-8. As Art In America leaked the other day:
Jarvis Cocker, lead singer of Pulp, will play live on the Whitney Museum's fourth floor, according to a source with knowledge of the event. The British musician will perform Apr. 5-8 with his side project, Relaxed Muscle, alongside Michael Clark's dance company, organized as part of the Whitney Biennial.Tickets have been gone for these shows way before anyone knew Jarvis Cocker would be performing at them, but as the article points out, and the Whitney confirms:
Cocker formed Relaxed Muscle in 2002, following Pulp's break up. He performs as "Darren Spooner," using a violent performance style and over-the-top goth costumes and make-up. The group has maintained a relatively low profile since their sole album release in 2003.
Tickets are required to attend, and advance tickets are sold out. A limited number of tickets become available each day of the performance.
A limited number of tickets will be available at the Museum on the day of each performance on a first-come, first-served basis beginning at 11 am (1 pm on Fridays). The performance is free with Museum admission, but special entry tickets are required. We encourage anyone unable to get entry tickets to join the standby line which forms a half-hour before each performance. Museum admission is required to join the standby line.Note that the Whitney doesn't reveal Jarvis will be there, but he will. Good luck!

Portland, OR post-punk-turned-synth-pop outfit Chromatics are back with their first full length since 2007's Night Drive. They began picking up speed again in 2011 after the success of the Drive Soundtrack, which they contributed to, and announced that the album, titled Kill For Love, would come out this past January. The release was pushed back a few times but it finally came out last month via Italians Do It Better, the Troubleman Unlimited imprint which is co-run by Chromatics/Glass Candy/Desire multi-instrumentalist Johnny Jewel. Leading up to the release, the band put out videos for five songs off the album, which includes a cover of Neil Young's "Into the Black." All five videos were directed by Alberto Rossini and can be watched below, along with a stream of the entire album. You can also download "Into the Black" above or stream it below.
Chromatics will be in NYC next week to open for Pulp at Radio City Music Hall on April 10. Tickets for that show are still available. Jeffrey Lewis opens Pulp's second Radio City show (4/11) which is sold out.

This mark Jeffrey Lewis & The Junkyard's first show in NYC since they sold out the Mercury Lounge last November. The band will be joined by new member Kristen Andreasson (Uncle Earl/Sometimes Why), who will basically be debuting on stage with the Junkyard in front of what is probably their biggest-ever American concert. Yikes!
Jeffrey's last album "A Turn in the Dream-Songs," his sixth for Rough Trade Records, was released last October and has been featured on Soundcheck and All Things Considered among other places. Jeffrey is just coming off a solo acoustic tour with Wooden Wand which saw him make stops all along the East Coast, including a special show (with Kimya Dawson, Daniel Johnston, and Built to Spill) at SXSW as part of the Brooklyn Vegan event for the release of Daniel Johnston's multi media project Space Ducks.
Alabama Shakes tickets also go on sale at noon.

Pulp have a few US shows surrounding their appearances at the Coachellas. Their Radio City show (4/11) sold out but they just added a second one happening one day earlier at the same venue, April 10 at Radio City. Tickets go on sale Friday (2/24) at noon.
