Spires @ Baby's All Right 10/19/2013
Spires

Spires played a lot of shows during CMJ. Maybe not as many as Joanna Gruesome, but close. And when they weren't playing, they were out and about. It felt like wherever I went that week, there was usually at least one member of Spires there, just hanging out. One of those shows was opening our Saturday party at Baby's All Right where they brought a lot of energy to the tough noon slot. We already posted one set of pictures from their set, and we've now got a second in this post.

Spires released their debut single a couple weeks back and have just put forth the video for its very catchy A-side, "Candyflip," a pretty straightforward performance clip of the band superimposed with crashing waves. You can watch it below.

Meanwhile, Spires play tonight (11/8) at Bowery Ballroom with Pure Bathing Culture and headliners Widowspeak. Tickets are still available. The band have a few other shows lined up too: opening for UK band Temples at Union Pool on November 26 (tickets); opening for the Allah-Las at Rough Trade NYC on December 6 (tickets); and playing a free Brooklyn Night Bazaar on December 7 show with Au Revoir Simone, Splashh, and Grooms.

Dates are listed, plus the music video and more pics from their BV CMJ party performance, below...

Pure Bathing Culture @ Glasslands - 8/28/13
Pure Bathing Culture - Glasslands, NYC - August 29th, 2013

Pure Bathing Culture, the duo of Sarah Versprille and Daniel Hindman, who are/were both also in Vetiver, filled Glasslands with their warm, dreamy sounds on Wednesday (8/28), one of a few Northeast dates they did this week in support of their just-released Moon Tides. For those who miss the venue's clouds, PBC's light show was making pretty good use of the venue's new aesthetics. Also on the bill was Mary Alouette, Jimmy Whispers, and Tiger Dare. (Leapling was initially billed too but dropped off.) Pictures of the whole show are in this post.

Pure Bathing Culture will return to NYC in the fall when their tour with Widowspeak hits Bowery Ballroom on November 8 with Spires. Tickets for that show are still available.

Pure Bathing Culture at Webster Hall in April (more by Dominick Mastrangelo)
Pure Bathing Culture

Dream pop duo Pure Bathing Culture (aka Sarah Versprille and Daniel Hindman, who are/were both also in Vetiver) are set to release their debut album, Moon Tides (due out 8/20 via Partisan), and after already releasing the single, "Pendulum," the band have now just put out another album cut, "Dream The Dare." Like the first single, this one's another catchy track awash in reverb and Stevie Nicks-esque melodies. Listen below.

As discussed, the duo are going on a short tour this summer which hits NYC on August 28 at Glasslands. Since we last spoke, it was announced that that show will be opened by Brooklyn indie pop band Leapling, whose solid new EP, Losing Face is out now. Mary Alouette was added to the show too, and tickets for the show are still available.

PBC also just announced that they'll go on a larger tour in the fall with Widowspeak (who have a new EP on the way), and that tour brings the band back to NYC for a show on November 8 at Bowery Ballroom. That one's a release show for the new Widowspeak EP and it also has Spires opening. Tickets for that show are not on sale yet, but check ticketmaster for updates. All dates are listed below.

Widowspeak also play the Captured Tracks 5th Anniversary at The Well on September 1 with Wild Nothing, Beach Fossils, Blouse, and Soft Metals.

Leapling also play the Sound Bites Series (which BV's Bill Pearis curates) on August 25 at Fulton Stall Market. 2 PM start and totally free.

Updated dates are listed, along with the new song stream, below...

Pure Bathing Culture

Dream pop duo Pure Bathing Culture (aka Sarah Versprille and Daniel Hindman, who are/were both also in Vetiver) will release their debut full length, Moon Tides, on August 20 via Partisan. Its lead single, "Pendulum," is one the catchiest songs of its kind that I've heard this year.

PBC have already done a good amount of touring this year, and now they've got more upcoming dates including another NYC show happening shortly after the album's release on August 28 at Glasslands. Tickets for that show are on sale now. No openers have been announced yet.

All dates are listed, along with a stream of "Pendulum," below...

Pure Bathing Culture at Webster Hall in April (more by Dominick Mastrangelo)
Pure Bathing Culture

When Sarah Versprille and Daniel HIndman aren't making pastoral folk in their band, Vetiver, they're off working as a duo on their new dream pop project, Pure Bathing Culture. And when I say dream pop, it's because the band have all the dreamy atmospherics to earn them that title, but they're definitely have more pop ambitions than many of their twee peers. They contributed the cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Dreams" to last year's Rumours tribute album, and couldn't have picked a more appropriate song, if that gives you an idea.

Last year, the duo released their self-titled debut EP, and now they're set to put out their debut full length, Moon Tides, on August 20 via Partisan in the US and a day earlier via Memphis Industries in the UK. You can download the new album's very catchy single, "Pendulum," above, or stream it along with streams of all four tracks from their EP, below.

Pure Bathing Culture are currently on a tour which brings the band to NYC TONIGHT (6/7) at Mercury Lounge for a show with Monogold. Tickets are available.

All dates are listed, along with those song streams, below...

Caveman @ Webster Hall, 4/10/2013
Caveman

And how was this vision a departure from CoCo Beware?
We were seeing a lot more UFOs, getting more into the universe vibe.

It does sound like an alien tune a little bit...something otherworldly.
Thank you! I think we've just been playing music with each other a lot more, and just--our brains connected a lot more. The initial idea we were all talking about was just to get a little less of a blurred line between everything. Seeing a UFO in the woods was kind of our vision.

When you're touring, is it always good to come back to New York?
Yeah, the best. You grow up here, it's like, you're just such used to fast-paced and a lot of people around, and you just do whatever you want at any time. So then traveling is amazing, but then you realize the bars close at 2 am, and you're like, "What?! I'm just getting started!" You can't get the sandwich of your dreams in the middle of the night. - [Gothamist]

After a lenghty tour that saw them hit SXSW (including one of our day parties) and most of the rest of the continent, Caveman came back to New York on last week (4/12) for a show at Webster Hall with Lucius and Pure Bathing Culture which also served as a hometown record release party for their new self-titled album.

More pics from that show, plus Caveman's setlist and a spotify stream of the LP, are below.

CAVEMAN

We knew Caveman were finishing up their new album and now we have the details. The self-titled album will be out April 2 (a popular release date) via Fat Possum. You can stream the first track released from it -- the synth-drenched "In the City" -- below. Cover art and track list is below as well.

As mentioned, Caveman (who just played Kidrockers at Brooklyn Bowl) are gearing up for an extensive North American tour that will hit SXSW, both coasts and Canada before returning to NYC for a show at Webster Hall on April 10 to which Pure Bathing Culture have been added to the bill (tickets). Updated tour dates are below.

Father John Misty at Webster Hall earlier this month (more by Amanda Hatfield)
Father John Misty

Father John Misty, the current project of former Fleet Foxes member Josh Tillman, is continuing to chronically tour internationally over the course of the next few months. His last NYC show was a sold out gig at Webster Hall and he'll be returning to the area for a far more intimate show at Hoboken's Maxwell's on May 17. Tickets for that show go on sale Friday (2/1) at noon.

That show, like most of his spring US run, is with Adam Green (Moldy Peaches) and Binki Shapiro (Little Joy), whose new album together was released today. You can stream it below via Spotify and check out the video for "Just to Make Me Feel Good," which was directed by Dum Dum Girls bassist Malia James.

Meanwhile, FJM recently recorded an acoustic version of "Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings" live at TRI Studios. A video of that performance and a list of all dates are below.

Gardens & Villa at Webster Hall in October (more by Amanda Hatfield)
Gardens & Villa

Santa Barbara indie pop crew Gardens & Villa haven't given us an album since their 2011 self titled debut on Secretly Canadian, but they did treat us to some music this year with a cover of "Gypsy" for the the Fleetwood Mac tribute album, Just Tell Me That You Want Me, and a remix of their tourmates Polica's "The Maker" for Polica's remix EP.

We asked the band for a list of their top 10 songs of 2012, and like their own sound, most of the artists they chose lean on the indie pop side of things like Beach House, Ariel Pink, Peaking Lights, Pure Bathing Culture, and others. You can check out their full list below.

MOJOMOJO

This month's issue of UK music magazine MOJO features a free CD titled Rumours Revisted, a tribute to Fleetwood Mac's landmark 1977 album, Rumours. (Not the first time a Fleetwood Mac tribute album came out this year.) The compilation features covers by Yeasayer, Liars, Julia Holter, Pure Bathing Culture, The Besnard Lakes, Dylan LeBlanc, and more. You can stream Yeasayer's take on "Second Hand News" and Liars' reworking of "The Chain" below, and to hear the rest of the album, you might have to get your hands on a copy of the new issue of MOJO or scour the internet for a download. (Side note: I've always wanted to hear 2007-era Yeasayer cover "The Chain" but I guess some things will have to remain up to the imagination...)

Over the summer, Fleetwood Mac revealed plans to tour in 2013. Details for that have still not been announced but the band continue to show signs that the tour is on the way. In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Lindsey Buckingham revealed that he'd also like to record with Fleetwood Mac again:

"Absolutely, absolutely I would," he says of creating a new album. "In fact, about six, seven months ago, John [McVie] and Mick [Fleetwood] were over here and we actually cut some tracks, and we did enough for maybe half an album. But you gotta get Stevie [Nicks] on board with that, and at the time, she was really quite caught up in what she was doing . . . but I would love to do that because John and Mick were playing their asses off."
The band last released Say You Will in 2003.

Streams and tracklist are below.
