Quicksand reunited at Revelation 25 (via)
Quicksand

It seemed somewhat inevitable, but Quicksand (Walter Schreifels, Tom Capone, Alan Cage, Sergio Vega), split since 1999, reunited last night, Sunday, June 10th, as part of the Revelation 25th Anniversary Celebration, a weekend of shows in Pomona, California at the Glass House from June 7-10. The stellar festival lineup featured names that graced and help shape the label's storied history, names like Gorilla Biscuits, Youth of Today, Into Another, Supertouch, Bold, Sick of It All, No For An Answer, Sense Field, Statue, Ignite, In My Eyes, Kiss it Goodbye, Gameface and Shai Hulud. Quicksand were not on the bill, though they did advertise "special guest".

Check out video below of the reunited Quicksand performing "Fazer" "Dine Alone" Omission" and their set closer "How Soon is Now?", The Smiths classic that graced the B-Side of the "Dine Alone" single. (Does anyone have the full setlist?) While you're down there, don't miss video of Underdog, Into Another, Gorilla Biscuits and more.

What does this mean? Is this their only appearance? I'm betting that someone has Terminal 5 on hold for a week (though someone wrote on Wikipedia that " It will be a one-time only reunion"). Videos below...

Walter Schreifels @ Knitting Factory - BV-CMJ 2008 (more by Zach Dilgard)
Walter Schreifels

Last CMJ, Rival Schools played their first public NYC reunion show at Knitting Factory. It was part of a day-long and free BrooklynVegan party. Right before that happened we interviewed Rival Schools members Walter Schreifels and Sammy Siegler, but only ever posted half of it ("part 1"). As sometimes happens around here, time went on, and the interview got older and older... and then I remembered we had it today. What reminded me was the show that the new Walter Schreifels Band will be playing at Music Hall of Williamsburg this evening (@7:30pm). What better time then to finally post the never-before-seen conclusion? (not to mention it's as relevant now as it was last year) (and better late than never?).

Rival Schools have now been back together for over a year, and though they promised a new album, so far it looks like the newest one will be a solo LP coming out by Walter himself (video preview at the end of the post). He'll play some of those new songs, along with lots of classics, at Music Hall tonight (right after an opening set by Think About Life).

In the second part of the interview below (read part one first), we talked about Youth of Today, Quicksand, Walking Concert, Walter being a dad, and what inspires the old friends today.

{Please note that the interview was conducted before Chi Cheng of the Deftones was involved in a serious car accident. )

Check it out...

Walter Schreifels with Rival Schools at Irving Plaza (more by Tim Griffin)
Walter

Walter Schreifels in concert doesn't just mean it will be the hardcore veteran playing his Martin acoustic. For a few dates (so far), Walter Schriefels (the band) will play shows in the northeast, including one on June 17th in NYC at The Studio @ Webster Hall. Ticket info is forthcoming. Expect a mix of "everything" (Quicksand, Gorilla Biscuits, covers...), except Rival Schools since they are currently active. The band is:

vocals & guitar: Walter Schreifels
bass: Arthur Smilios (GB, CIV)
drums: Andy Action (2 Skinnee J's)
guitar: Dave Hill (Valley Lodge, Children of the Unicorn, Cobra Verde)
If you've ever seen comedian Dave Hill play guitar, you know he can shred (usually) in addition to telling jokes. He knows his shredders too. Catch his band Valley Lodge as "the house band for Triumph the Insult Comic Dog Presents Bonnapoo 2009" in the Bonnaroo comedy tent. Catch Dave's hilarious live comedy show, The Dave Hill Explosion, next at UCB in NYC on May 21st with special guests Takka Takka and Ira Glass.

Walter Schreifels' other venture, Rival Schools, are scheduled to play a few dates with Eagles of Death Metal, including NYC on August 6th at Webster Hall. Tickets are still on sale. Rival Schools is working on their new album, the follow-up to United By Fate and first album since reuniting.

All dates below...

"So yeah, I draw the line at Quicksand". - Walter

RS

Walter Schreifels. Sam Siegler. Two names of a very select few who defined a sound and a movement in the late 80s and early 90s, New York Hardcore. Building upon the zen-like teachings of prophets with names like HR, MacKaye, and Raybeez, Walter Schreifels and Sammy Siegler cut their teeth in the blooming NYC scene with the legendary Gorilla Biscuits, Youth Of Today, and Judge, as well as Side By Side, and Project X.

Quicksand and CIV, as well as MTV support, multiple LPs and music videos followed, culminating in the reunion of the two Youth of Today bandmates in Rival Schools. Sam and Walter formed the band in 1999, with their lone LP United By Fate coming in 2001. The band split the following year, scrapping existing recordings that were believed to be the basis of the new album. Six years passed, and Walking Concert, Nightmare of You, Head Automatica, and solo work followed until early 2008, when Rival Schools announced their reformation. The announcement was followed by festival dates in Europe, ultimately leading to a handful of US shows.

Which leads us to NYC... The band have lined up a pair of shows at Maxwells and Mercury Lounge in early November which sold out quickly, but the band have also agreed to headline the free BrooklynVegan day party at Knitting Factory on Oct 25th! In part one of their first joint interview ever, we poked and prodded Sammy and Walter about their past & present projects, the old days, and blow-up dolls...

Rival Schools

Walter Schriefels' short-lived post-Quicksand project, Rival Schools, have reunited to record some new tunes and lined up a seven date tour of the UK leading up to an appearance at the Hove Festival in Norway. Here's Walter from an interview posted @ RockSound:

"We have got this June tour and we still want to play some shows in the States. Especially if we are writing new songs it would be good to live in them a little onstage before we come to record anything. Whether the album is out first part of the year or spring we are not yet sure but we want to play out with new material to test it all out so expect a few more dates to be announced."
Awesome..... US dates are comin'! Full tour dates, most history and videos below.....
