Erol Alkan @ Studio B - May 3, 2008 (CRED)
Erol Alkan

Lots of good dance went down here last weekend, but I was out of town! Luckily one of my dance partners in crime, Paul (Thump Thump), made it out to Studio B on Saturday for Erol Alkan's set:

"Everything about Erol was great last Saturday. The crowd - packed but not that gross, disgusting, Studio B packed. Most everyone was into it, and then Erol crushed it, but not in a "hit you over the head with bangin' tracks" kind of crush. It was more of a complete set, not banger after banger. I liked it because he selected very good, obscure tracks (very few Ed Banger songs) and made them flow. He teased up tons of build-ups and blended them into other build-ups, and then released. It was really, really, one of the more seamless dj sets that I've heard in a while.
The dancing starts early this week with a couple of great events happening tonight (Wednesday, May 7, 2008).........

Saturdya Looks Good to Me @ R Bar

The Creek and the Cave is a venue to see live music in Long Island City. You can find it on our venue map.

Fred Thomas is the singer of Saturday Looks Good To Me. They came out with a good album in 2007. That's them/him im the picture above playing the BrooklynVegan day party at R Bar during CMJ 2007. More pictures like that HERE.

Fred also has a new solo CD out. It's out on Magic Marker Records, and called FLOOD. All I've heard so far is the track streaming at his MySpace, and the one I have linked for download at the top of this post.

TONIGHT: Catch Fred Thomas live, at The Creek and the Cave. It's the album release show, and Brandon says it shoud be a blast.

Takka Takka, Dave Godowsky & Kaiju @ Pianos (BV CMJ) Oct 20, 2007 (CRED)
Kaiju

Characters from Kaiju Big Battel were on hand at two of the three BrooklynVegan day parties during CMJ this year. You already saw a photo featuring the bouncer at the Friday R Bar party (where Yeasayer & Black Kids & many others played). Now this post is full of pictures that were taken the next day at Pianos - some featuring members of Takka Takka, and two with (their friend) singer-songwriter Dave Godowsky (who played upstairs at noon at that party).

Kaiju Big Battel play Warsaw in Brooklyn tonight! (Nov 9, 2007). Dave Godowsky plays Mercury Lounge on Sunday. Why is Dave in town? Because his other band plays Bowery Ballroom on Saturday.

Kaiju Big Battel are also featured in the new Bloc Party video. That video, and more photos (including one with Jaime of Islands), below....

The Crown Point Festival runs from October 27th - November 17th in NYC.

The Crown Point Festival is a three week festival of the best emerging and pioneering artists in film, theater and music from around the world in the Lower East Side of New York City. Crown Points is organized with the belief that the current state of downtown culture offers tremendous opportunities to those willing to make a commitment to excellence. Every performance is tailor-made to transport the audience on a unique unforgettable experience.
Their website is kind of hard to navigate, but that's where you need to go to figure out what they have going on. Yeasayer is playing the Abrons Arts Center on October 28th. I listed all the bands they have playing, below....

Kaiju Big Battel

I loved having creatures from Kaiju Big Battel running around the party at R Bar yesterday. That's one of them hanging out with the bouncer outside. Photo by Jefferson. Meet them again today (Oct 20) at Pianos.

R Bar

As previously announced, the free BrooklynVegan party this Friday (Oct 19) is at R Bar - a swanky new (sort of) bar/venue on the Lower East Side - right on Bowery between Prince and Spring - a short walk from...pretty much anywhere else on the Lower East Side. The show is 18+ to get in, will have an open Svedka/Red Bull/Bloody Mary bar (while supplies last) for those over 21, and features ten bands - including Black Kids.

Tonight's (Oct 18) show at R Bar looks good too. First of all, it's hosted by MATT PINFIELD. Also, you've got Little Birdy, The Forms, Born in the Flood, Benzos, Takka Takka, and The Epochs - a band, who despite the confusion of one commenter, are playing there tonight (not tomorrow). They're also a band who are playing/played six shows during CMJ.

More details at R Bar's site, and more Takka Takka, Epochs, and Forms tour dates below....
