R. Kelly at Pitchfork 2013 (more by Amanda Hatfield)
R Kelly

We recently mentioned that Saintseneca (and other local artists) dropped off Columbus, OH's Fashion Meets Music Festival due to R. Kelly being booked as a headliner. The festival continued to receive backlash, including local radio station WCBE recently withdrawing as a sponsor. Turns out the backlash actually achieved something though. The festival posted the following:

FMMF and R. Kelly have decided to part ways. We appreciate the ongoing support of our Festival partners and look forward to kicking things off next month.
USA Today points out that R. Kelly's publicist issued the following statement: "R. Kelly is sorry to disappoint his fans but looks forward to seeing them in the near future during one of his upcoming tours."

This followed a June 25 Columbus Alive article where festival co-founder Bret Adams was quoted saying, "He's a nationally known name. He was not convicted of anything. He was acquitted," followed by, "We're running a festival to help brand the city of Columbus. We're not the morality police."

R. Kelly previously performed at the 2013 editions of Pitchfork Festival and Bonnaroo.

Saintseneca

Columbus, OH indie folk band Saintseneca were set to play this year's Fashion Meets Music Festival in their hometown, but they've dropped off the fest due to the headliner that was booked: R. Kelly. Here's an excerpt of what Saintseneca had to say:

Fashion Meets Music Festival happening in Columbus was a very exciting prospect to us; a way to represent our city and help form its identity, as well as a symbol of new things to come. We were very honored and excited to be asked to be a part of it.

That being said, we were disappointed that the artist selected to headline the festival was R. Kelly. We feel his selection as a performer ignores his very serious allegations of sexual violence and assault. We feel it is an affront to all survivors, who are already often overlooked and forgotten in our society.

As a result, we've decided to withdraw from the festival. This is in no way meant to be a direct attack on the festival or its organizers; in fact, we genuinely appreciate their hard work and their commitment to bringing something new and exciting to our hometown. It is just that being so closely associated with this artist, especially here in our own hometown, is something we are not comfortable with.

Jim DeRogatis points out that electronic duo Damn the Witch Siren dropped off the fest for the same reason too.

UPDATE: FMMF pulled R Kelly from the lineup.

Pitchfork Festival - Day 3 - 7/21/2013
Pitchfork Festival - Day 3 - 7/21/2013
Pitchfork Festival - Day 3 - 7/21/2013

After entering with a robed choir behind him, R. Kelly starts stringing together his hits, medley style. A verse, a chorus, and then on to the next. Songs about "getting freaky in the club," the kitchen, the car, wherever. Kelly was the subject of a years-long investigation over child-pornography charges, but was eventually acquitted in 2008. None of that appears to matter to anyone left in the park tonight, as one of the largest crowds in Pitchfork history flocks to check out the dominant R&B performer of the last two decades. The Union Park crowd reaction isn't quite as over-the-top as that of his typical audience, but the dancing continues to escalate until the set peaks with "When a Woman's Fed Up" and the stepping songs "Happy People" and "Step in the Name of Love," accompanied by white balloons. Kelly saves "I Believe I Can Fly" for the encore, and this time white-dove balloons fill the sky. [Chicago Tribune]
Pitchfork Music Festival 2013 wrapped up on Sunday (7/21) with its most hip hop heavy day, including sets from rappers El-P, Killer Mike, Lil B, and Tree, plus rap producers TNGHT and Evian Christ (who both happen to be Kanye collaborators). And not exactly rap, but in that real there were also sets from MIA and obscure up-and-comer R. Kelly. It wasn't all hip hop though. Sunday also gave us sets from Foxygen (whose singer, Sam France, continued his streak of climbing at festivals), Yo La Tengo, Waxahatchee, Autre Ne Veut, Glass Candy, and more. Pictures of the final day of the festival are in this post.

If you haven't been keeping up with our coverage of Pitchfork festival, day 1 pictures and review are HERE, and more pictures are HERE and HERE. Day 2 pictures and review are HERE and more pictures are HERE. Day 3 pictures continue below...

Coachella 2013 - Day 2

Phoenix, who were recently in NYC, made their way over to California where they played a pre-Coachella show at the Fox Theater in Pomona on Thursday (pictures on BV Austin) before hitting Coachella last night (4/13). During their Coachella set (pictures in this post), they brought out R. Kelly to sing the lyrics to "Ignition" over Phoenix's "1901." The collaboration also included parts of Phoenix's "Chloroform" and R. Kelly's "I'm a Flirt." Check out a video of that performance with more pictures of Phoenix below.

Phoenix's tour includes another NYC show on October 2 at Barclays Center with The Vaccines (tickets) and Philly's Made In America festival.

Pictures of Coachella Day 1 are HERE and HERE, and the rest of Day 2 are HERE. Stay tuned for more coverage. The festival continues today and is streaming live

Pitchfork Top Tracks

Pitchfork just posted their much anticipated list of the top 100 tracks of 2012. The #1 slot went to... Grimes! Whether you thought the whole of her album Visions was good or not, it was hard to deny the charms of "Oblivion." (Having that great video didn't hurt either.) Do you think it deserved to top the list? If not then what song should've?

You can check out P4K's entire hot 100 of 2012 below.

SPIN top 50 2012

SPIN have revealed their list of the top 50 albums of 2012. It continues SPIN's trend of giving love to crossover punk and metal (which they've been pretty consistent with since naming Fucked Up's David Comes to Life their top album of 2011) with the inclusion of Baroness, Torche, Pallbearer, Cloud Nothings, and Japandroids, but rather surprisingly excludes the SPIN Essential'd Ceremony - Zoo and The Men - Open Your Heart, in favor of popular blowouts by Taylor Swift, fun., and Nicki Minaj. The list also shares its #1 and #2 with the two highest Pitchfork-rated albums of the year. And no Grimes.

The list begins with the Kanye-cribbed disclaimer, "Most critics' taste levels ain't at our waist level. Ain't nobody fucking with our clique." Check out SPIN's Top 50 LPs of 2012 list below.

VIcious Lies and Dangerous Rumors

As expected, there have been lots of (dangerous) rumors floating around about Big Boi's upcoming sophomore solo album, Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors, which is due out December 11 via Def Jam (pushed back from November 13). He's now revealed what is (fingers crossed!) the official tracklist for the album and the guest spots are pretty exciting. Despite Little Dragon's initial guest spot having gone to Kelly Rowland a while back, the group actually appears on three other album tracks. The album's got plenty of love from the dirty south, like on "Gossip," which features veteran UGK and worthy newcomer Big K.R.I.T.; frequent Outkast/Big Boi collaborator Killer Mike appears on a track with Little Dragon; TI and Ludacris end up on a track together; and Sleepy Brown of Organized Noize, who produced a ton of Outkast back in the day is on one too. In more surprising (and also exciting) news, Wavves and Jai Paul are both on the album. As is A$AP Rocky, Phantogram, Kid Cudi, and others. You can check out the full tracklist below.

In related news, TI also revealed the tracklist for his much-delayed upcoming album, Trouble Man (due out 12/18), and it looks a bit different than the one we initially mentioned. The most striking difference is that the song sampling Gotye and featuring Kendrick Lamar is not listed anymore. But in more positive news, Big Boi's Outkast partner Andre 3000 is there on the song, "Sorry" (the one where he allegedly apologizes to Big Boi). Cee Lo Green, A$AP Rocky, R. Kelly, and more are set to appear too. The full tracklist is below. TI plays NYC on December 18 at Best Buy Theater (tickets).

Speaking of Big Boi and Little Dragon, they were hanging out together a bit before Halloween at a "costume party" (check out their costumes). A video of them together and those tracklists, are below.

Videology's new screening room
Videology

I started working at Videology in Williamsburg a month or so after it opened back in December 2003. My apartment's proximity to the store and the general fun vibe (and, yes, free rentals) kept me there since, and I worked the last night of its existence as a video store proper, one day after Hurricane Sandy hit (it was a busy weekend). The DVD business ain't what it used to be and about a year ago the owners decided to refashion Videology into a bar/cafe with a screening room while still renting DVDs.

This new incarnation opened on November 9 with a full bar in the front, and the screening room in back that seats about 40 people give or take. It's pretty nice, if I do say so myself. The events calendar is a mix of ticketed exclusive runs (like First Winter which screens this week), and free screenings, like the R. Kelly "Trapped in the Closet" marathon that happens on Friday (11/23). You can check out all upcoming screenings here.

This Saturday marks the debut of DAVE THE SPAZZ MOVIE CLUB which is "a new monthly series at Videology that will present the strangest, weirdest and wildest movies, short subjects, and forgotten ephemera with the occasional guest hosts and various surprises!" This Saturday (11/24) they'll be showing Phil Tucker's z-grade sci-fi classic Robot Monster (the one with the gorilla with a diving helmet) and it is also doubling as a benefit for Norton Records who lost so much of their vinyl stock in Hurricane Sandy. Tickets are $8 and are on sale now. And if you can't make it to the screening, you can help Norton Records in other ways.

Meanwhile, Videology is not the only new movie theatre in the neighborhood. Williamsburg Cinemas, a multiplex located at Grand St. and Driggs, is set to open early next month:

The final touches on Williamsburg Cinemas, Elgart's long-planned seven-auditorium movie hub on Grand Street and Driggs Avenue, will wrap up this weekend for the 1,000-seater theater to open in December, he said.

"We were planning on opening Nov. 2...then Sandy hit," said Elgart, the theater's owner and operator.

The Department of Buildings' final inspection of the space has been delayed by post-hurricane demands on the agency's time, Elgart said.
"We were going to start with the 'Life of Pi' and the new James Bond movie," he said. "Now we're shooting for Christmas titles."

Elgart, who already owns Cobble Hill Cinemas and Kew Gardens Cinemas, touted the theater's 3D screens, 7.1 surround sound, "rocking chair seating," and mix of indie and blockbuster movies.
"We'll be showing 'The Hobbit' in 3D," he said of one of the first planned films. - [DNAinfo]

This is in addition to Nitehawk Cinema, indieScreen and Spectacle, all of which are in five or so blocks of each other.

T.I. at SXSW 2012 (more by Ryan Muir)
T.I.

Atlanta MC T.I. is prepping to release Trouble Man, his eighth studio album, before the end of the year. Though not named after the the excellent Marvin Gaye soundtrack of the same name, as a recent listening party can attest, the LP does dip its toes into samples from that effort while logging guest spots from R. Kelly, Kendrick Lamar, Andre 3000, Lil Wayne, A$AP Rocky, No I.D., P!nk, Cee-Lo, Pharrell Williams and more. Gotye gets into the mix via a sample on TI's track "Somebody That I Used To Know". Stream some tracks below.

In the meantime, the promotional arm is in full swing for T.I. and you can look for the MC to play some live dates. One of those goes down in NYC on December 18th at Best Buy. Tickets are on sale now.

All known tour dates, those song streams and some video is below

Cruel Summer

After much delay, rumors proved true and false, and some uncertain info, Kanye West's G.O.O.D. Music compilation album, Cruel Summer, is fully confirmed and will be out this Tuesday (9/18). Many of its tracks -- "Clique," "Mercy," "New God Flow," "Cold" (previously titled "Theraflu"), and his guest-filled remix of Chief Keef's "I Don't Like" -- have been floating around the internet for some time now. You can stream all of those and snippets of every album track below.

Though Kanye only actually raps on about half the album, his presence is felt throughout and Cruel Summer succeeds at playing from start to finish with an album flow, despite it technically being a compilation. It opens as huge as you expect any Kanye related release to open, addressing the album not just to his fans, friends or family, but of course, "To The World." The track brings together beat master Hudson Mohawke (who's been having a great year as one half of TNGHT) with R. Kelly and Ye. It immediately follows with the album's strongest track, "Clique," which features one of the best Jay-Z verses in recent years and a towering beat from Hit-Boy, who is also behind Cruel Summer tracks "Cold," "Higher," and of course you may know him as the guy behind "Niggas In Paris."

After it continues colossally with previously released singles "Mercy" and "New God Flow," we get the first track on the album without Kanye's voice, "The Morning." However, there's no lack of all-star rappers on the track. We get killer verses from vets Pusha T, Common, and Raekwon, and if guys like Kid Cudi and 2 Chainz are your thing, well they're there too. Cudi, though not the strongest of Kanye associates, does have a shining moment on the album though. Over a clattering beat in "Creepers," he delivers a solo vocal performance making for a rare standout personal moment from not-Kanye in the midst of Ye's encapsulating ego. That's followed by "Bliss," which sees the return of Hudson Mohawke to the boards and is the album's sole track with all singing, no rapping. A distinct contrast to the hanging out and freestyling feel of the closing "I Don't Like" remix.

Streams and tracklist are below.

R Kelly

R. Kelly, who was supposed to play NYC in July but cancelled, has announced "The Single Ladies Tour" (which I can't imagine has anything in common with the way Beyonce intended it), which will go down this fall. The press release calls it "the ultimate girls (and guys) night out" and R. Kelly himself said, "We really want the single ladies up there, and where guys know there's single ladies, they're going to be in the mix, because they're looking for a woman." Tamia will support on all dates. The tour hits NYC on November 21 at Madison Square Garden Theatre. Tickets for that show go on sale Friday (9/7).

A list of all dates and a video are below.

R. Kelly

R. Kelly is set to play his first NYC concert in six years four years at the annual Groovin' in the Park which will happen at Roy Wilkins Park in Queens on Sunday, July 1. The show will also feature Boyz II Men, Beres Hammond and Jimmy Cliff (who plays Prospect Park In June). Let's hope this goes off better than R. Kelly's recent "appearance" in Austin.

Tickets supposedly went on sale today (5/24), but the ticket page on the Groovin' in the Park website still says "coming soon." (According to the site, it's all done through PayPal too.) Check that site for updates. According to the ticket page, you can also get them at a variety of Queens locations which are listed at the bottom of this post, along with a Groovin' in the Park flyer and promo video.

In related news, R. Kelly will released his eleventh studio album, Write Me Back, on June 26. The only guest artist reported to be on the album is Young Jeezy. Check out the video for "Share My Love," along with the album art and tracklist below.

Kelly, T.I., Drake, Snoop Dogg, Juicy J, and others. Check out videos of "Tony Montana" [Ft. Drake], "Magic (Remix)" [Ft. T.I.], and "Same Damn Time," below.

Future will be embarking on a two month long tour of the US in support of the album, which kicks off later this month with support from Pusha T. The tour hits NYC on June 4 at Irving Plaza. Tickets go on sale today, Friday (5/11) at 10 AM.

R.Kelly

R. Kelly needs funding -- AND QUICK -- because the singer tells TMZ he's ready to film THIRTY TWO new chapters of his legendary hip-hopera "Trapped in the Closet" ... but he needs financial backing first.

When we last saw "Trapped" ... the year was 2007 and Kelly had released 22 chapters, involving a little person who crapped his pants ... a neighbor with the spatula ... and a pimp with the stuttering problem.

Now, Kelly -- who was leaving an L.A. gym yesterday -- tells us he wants to continue the saga -- "but it costs a lot of money to do ... so we're actually looking for investors." -[TMZ]

Paging kickstarter... Video from TMZ is below.
