FADER

The FADER always has some year-end coverage, but for the past 15 years they didn't publish a ranked year-end list. This year however, they ranked their 116 favorite songs of 2014 (find out why) and it's a diverse list that manages to sing the praises of iLoveMakonnen, Tinashe, Alex G, Florida Georgia Line, Enrique Iglesias, Bleachers, Ricky Eat Acid, YG, Toni Braxton & Babyface, Nothing, Grimes, Parquet Courts, Run the Jewels and Grouper all in the same damn list.

Read more about each choice here and check out the full list below...

Big Krit

Mississippi rapper Big K.R.I.T. is planning to release his new album, Cadillactica, later this year and he recently put out its single "Pay Attention." It's got a crooning airy R&B hook from Rico Love and minimal production from Jim Jonsin, but don't let that make you think K.R.I.T.'s gone soft on us. His rhymes still steal the show. You can stream that below.

K.R.I.T.'s now announced a fall North American tour with rising Atlanta crew Two-9, dubbed the "Pay Attention Tour." That hits NYC on October 7 at Highline Ballroom. Tickets for that show go on sale today (8/15) at noon. All dates are listed below.

Drake as Lil Wayne as Steve Urkel
Drake

The first Saturday Night Live episode of 2014 aired last night (1/18) with Drake as the host and musical guest. He acted in most of the sketches, including "Hip Hop Classics Before They Were Stars" where he impersonated Lil Wayne as Steve Urkel on "Family Matters" and Jay Z on "Mr. Wizard." That same sketch also had Kenan Thompson playing Rick Ross as the red Teletubby. Drake also did a sketch re-enacting his Bar Mitzvah and "Resolution Revolution" where he rapped about (and then broke) new year's resolutions to stop drinking and smoking, and then did Cosplay dressed as a wizard for the "no more Cosplay" resolution. He was in a few other sketches too, including impersonations of A-Rod and Katt Williams, all of which can be watched in the full episode video below.

For Drake's musical performance, he did "Started From the Bottom" into "Trophies" and a stripped down version of "Hold On We're Going Home" into "From Time," the latter of which featured an appearance by Jhene Aiko who also sings on the album version of the song and sang with him at his recent Barclays Center show. Videos of those performances are below too.

In addition to all the Drake stuff, the episode also marked the debut of new cast member Sasheer Zamata, SNL's first African American female cast member since 2007, when Maya Rudolph left the show. It was also the first episode that SNL's two new female African American writers, LaKendra Tookes and Leslie Jones, contributed to.

Nas and Rick Ross
Rick Ross

Legendary Queens rapper Nas has been making some live appearances this year like Bonnaroo, Governors Ball, and Citi Field, and now he's got what appears to be a one-off happening on November 1 at the MGM Grand Theater at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, CT. Tickets for this rap show in a casino go on sale Friday (9/20) at 9 AM, and are currently on presale.

Another rapper playing that venue is Rick Ross (who also played Gramercy last night [9/17]) on November 16 (tix go on AEG presale Thursday [9/19] at 10 AM). It's part of his tour which also includes a NYC happening at another slightly unconventional venue for hip hop, Beacon Theatre on November 15. This isn't the first rap show to happen at Beacon Theatre but it's nevertheless a left turn from Beacon's usual bookings. TIckets for that show go on sale Friday (9/20) at 11 AM and Internet/VIP Experience presales begin Thursday (9/19) at 11 AM (password: "HUSTLIN"). All tour dates are listed below.

The previously discussed Kid Cudi/Big Sean tour also hits the MGM Grand Theater at Foxwoods Resort Casino on 9/29 (tickets).

Both Nas and Rick Ross appear on the new Jay Z album Magna Carta Holy Grail, which he's supporting on a tour that hits NYC in January at Barclays Center, which Jay Z is selling his stake in.

All Rick Ross dates are listed below...

Cassie

Though the attention being paid to futuristic R&B has been more prevalent than ever in the past two years, it's also been interesting to look back on the ways the sound did exist in years prior. And even more exciting to see some of those artists making comebacks. Miguel's Kaleidoscope Dream was one of last year's better albums, but I'd be lying if I said it didn't tempt me to dust off my copy of FutureSex/LoveSounds. And only a few months after doing that? Boom: The 20/20 Experience. Another thing I went back to last year was Cassie's only album -- her 2006 self titled debut -- specifically it's opening track/huge hit, "Me & U." The thick bass and airy vocals of that track are way more similar to the post-Weeknd world of R&B than I remembered, and it more than holds up.

Cassie had been dropping some singles here and there since her '06 album, but almost seven years later, there was still no sign of another full length release. However, like JT did in March, Cassie ended her lengthy absence last week with the release of her free mixtape, RockaByeBaby. It might be "just a mixtape" (whatever that really means at this point anyway), but RockaByeBaby serves as a worthy followup to Cassie, and as a whole release, it might even be better. The album is stacked with guest appearances (Jeremih, Pusha T, Fabolous, Meek Mill, Too $hort, and others) and the producers are no slackers here either (Mike Will Made It, Young Chop, and more), but it's not over-saturated with guests. Even the verses from some of the weaker rappers (Wiz Khalifa) work pretty well here. And some of the samples used are noticeably big songs (Kendrick Lamar's "m.A.A.d City," Tyga's "Do My Dance"), which can be a turnoff, but she uses them well.

Overall, the thing really feels like an album. Too often with mixtapes I find myself filtering through 20-something songs for the 10 good ones, but RockaByeBaby has no fat to trim. Its 13 tracks (12, not including the intro) clock in at 37 minutes, and they're all strong. The collaboration with Jeremih, "Sound of Love," is an early standout, with both singers bouncing off of each other really nicely. A little surprisingly, Fabolous' guest verse on "I Love It" is actually one of the most memorable moments of the album. And the chorus of "Paradise" (with its "pair of dice" pun) is one you'll find yourself humming after the album ends.

Download RockaByeBaby for free over at DatPiff and stream it in its entirety below...

Former Corrections Officer turned Drug Rapper Rick Ross
Rick Ross

If there was a prize for the creepiest lyrics of 2013, hip hop mega-star Rick Ross may be the winner. His rhyme on Rocko's "U.O.E.N.O." goes like this:

Put molly all in her champagne
She ain't even know it
I took her home and I enjoyed that
She ain't even know it
Predictably, Ross is in damage control mode, issuing the following statement to Funkmaster Flex (copied verbatim):
I know I'm a man, but I respect Women to the utmost, And Things like Date Rape shouldn't be glorified...with that being said, I don't think taking Rap lyrics as straight facts is ever the way to go. I mean that is really setting a president we do NOT want to set, then every rapper could be indicted for Drug dealing, Murder, etc, etc. Hip Hop is Art, and we have to look at it as art. Yes We want to see these artists as the realest people ever, but they are the Voice we want to hear when we want to know what's going on out there, and in reality some people Do these things, And Shouldn't it be brought to light so young Women can protect themselves?!?! This Is actually really good the conversation is going...Ross has actually helped to protect Our Women from the Creeps that would hurt them!!!!

Head below to hear the lyrics in question, and skip ahead to 2:10 if you prefer.

Pitchfork Albums

Today Pitchfork posted the first half (well, first 30 albums) of their Top 50 Albums of 2012 list. There are some surprises on it, like Peaking Lights and Sharon Van Etten, who seemed more likely to end up on their Honorable Mentions list due to their relatively lower scores and the fact that most of the albums on this list were awarded Best New Music throughout the year. Cat Power and Hot Chip also make it, both of whose new albums seemed to have received less love from Pitchfork than previous releases by those artists. A Rustie Essential Mix also makes the list even though his actual album which came out last year didn't make their 2011 list. And of course the expected ones end up there too like Purity Ring, Julia Holter, Schoolboy Q, Miguel, and more. The remaining 20 will be revealed tomorrow (Friday, 12/21).

Check out their 50-30 picks below...

Pitchfork Top Tracks

Pitchfork just posted their much anticipated list of the top 100 tracks of 2012. The #1 slot went to... Grimes! Whether you thought the whole of her album Visions was good or not, it was hard to deny the charms of "Oblivion." (Having that great video didn't hurt either.) Do you think it deserved to top the list? If not then what song should've?

You can check out P4K's entire hot 100 of 2012 below.

Bruce

More of the big 2012 year-end lists have been rolling in, with NPR and SPIN recently revealing theirs, and now Rolling Stone have unleashed theirs. Similarly to Uncut, the expected albums from older artists are there, including Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Leonard Cohen, Dr. John, and the number one slot going to Bruuuuuuuuuuuce. It's got huge albums like Mumford and Sons, Taylor Swift, and fun., as well as the token high ranking indie album (Japandroids at #9), the token washed up band who was once classic (Green Day), things you knew you'd see on Rolling Stone's list like Jack White and Alabama Shakes, and... Grimes!

You can read the whole list below...

Joe's Pub is celebrating John's birthday tomorrow. Symphony Space honors the man in November. Glasslands gets down in December.

Rick Ross at Fader Fort, Austin 2012 (more by Angelina Castillo)
Rick Ross

Tension exploded between Rick Ross' MMG crew, Young Jeezy's camp and G-unit in Atlanta this weekend.

During Saturday's (September 29) taping for BET's 2012 Hip-Hop Awards in Atlanta, Rozay and the Snowman reportedly got into a shoving match backstage before the scuffle spilled outside into the parking lot. Shots were fired and at least one man was said to be arrested.

That's not all. Multiple sources who witnessed the fray confirmed to MTV News that Ross' protégé Gunplay was also involved in fisticuffs with members of 50 Cent's G-Unit camp. Gun was seen with visible wounds and a witness told us that the Miami MC was put into handcuffs and detained, but a separate source close to Gunplay told us that he was not arrested. -[MTV News]

The BET Awards took place at the Atlanta Civic Center where, in front of the cameras, both Rick Ross and Young Jeezy's individual sets went off without a hitch, along with a tribute to the revered Chris Lighty (RIP) that featured A Tribe Called Quest, Missy Elliott, Busta Rhymes, Fat Joe and 50 Cent (the latter two have well documented beef). Check out some video of the Rick Ross/Young Jeezy scuffle (including a broken mirror... bad luck, guys!) courtesy of TMZ below.

In related news, Rick Ross and his Maybach Music associates Wale and Meek Mill have announced a fall tour, and those dates are also listed below...

Jay-Z & Kanye / Passion Pit / D'Angelo at Made in America 9/2/2012
Made in America Festival - 2012 - Day 1 in Pictures
Made in America Festival - 2012 - Day 1 in Pictures
Made in America Festival - 2012 - Day 1 in Pictures

Closing out the first day of Made in America was rap legend and festival organizer Jay-Z's behemoth set. "Allow me to re-introduce myself," Jay rapped as he entered the stage, a screaming crowd of thousands joining him in every word and making clear that no introductions were necessary. Breaking the day's tradition of rappers surrounded by hype men, Jay-Z struck a dramatic pose alone on stage.

His set's first surprise was a video from President Obama, who voiced his support of Made in America's patriotic vision and urged concertgoers to register to vote, a call to action greeted with cheers.

Backed by a live band and celebrating his recent NBA partnership by sporting a Brooklyn Nets hat, Jay-Z flew through a sampler of his most beloved hits, from early hit Izzo (H.O.V.A.) to crowd favorite Big Pimpin. He gave plenty of love to his new material as well, performing an ode to his hometown of New York City with a euphoric rendition of Empire State of Mind and leading the crowd in singing Run This Town, before playing the hard-driving On to the Next One...

...Jay-Z's turn at Made In America wasn't complete without a few high-profile guests. As the show neared its end, Kanye West and his G.O.O.D. Music posse stormed the stage. West, joined by Pusha T, Big Sean, 2 Chainz and Common, showcased new tracks Mercy and New God Flow with his crew before splitting off to perform several songs solo. With the crowd in near pandemonium, Jay and Ye closed the night with collaboration N----- in Paris.- [USA Today]

Jay-Z's inaugural Made in America Festival happened Labor Day Weekend in Philadelphia and the first day (9/2) featured a wide variety of acts, including Janelle Monae, Passion Pit, Rick Ross, Dirty Projectors (who have a show coming up at Carnegie Hall) and J himself (and a few of his friends). More pictures from Sunday are below, along with Jay-Z's setlist...

Gary Clark Jr. at Coachella 2012 (more by David Andrako)
Gary Clark Jr

As mentioned, Philly's Made In America Festival goes down this weekend (9/1 - 9/2) on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. Since we last spoke, the lineup was expanded and now includes Drake (who was rumored but not on the initial lineup announcement), Jill Scott, Chris Cornell, The Hives, and Run DMC, who are all playing the second day (9/2), in addition to blues guitarist Gary Clark Jr., who will be on the only performer on the bill playing both days, and others. Day 1 (9/1) will be headlined by festival head Jay-Z, and also includes Skrillex, Passion Pit, D'Angelo, Dirty Projectors, Janelle Monae, and others, and day 2 (9/2) will be headlined by Pearl Jam and also includes Odd Future, X, Santigold, and others. Tickets for the festival are still available.

If you're going to the fest, Philly is only about a two hour drive from NYC and this FAQ should help you find your way over (for directions use the address of Ben Franklin Parkway at Eakins Oval in Philadelphia or the Philadelphia Museum of Art). Once you're there, that FAQ will also help you find your way around, parking tips, and more. There will be a free filtered water service at the festival site, but you can't bring glowsticks (sorry Skrillex fans).

A #MadeInAmerica video for Gary Clark Jr. and the lineup for the festival are below.

Azealia Banks at Coachella 2012 (more by David Andrako)
Azealia Banks

Azealia Banks, who recently canceled a bunch of summer shows due to "recording commitments," has now added more shows to her summer schedule. Most of those are in Europe, but she was just added to the Hot 97 Summer Jam lineup which goes down in East Rutherford, NJ at MetLife Stadium on June 3. The rest of the lineup includes Nicki MInaj, Rick Ross, 2 Chainz, Waka Flocka Flame, Young Jeezy, J. Cole, Wale, and more. Tickets for the fest are available. The full lineup is listed below.

UPDATE: She actually plays the Summer Jam pre-show in the parking lot with the even more impressive lineup of Pusha T, Big K.R.I.T., A$AP Rocky, Schoolboy Q, Kendrick Lamar, and Fred the Godson. Your Summer Jam ticket gets you into the pre-show.

In addition to her fickle live schedule, Azealia Banks continues to move around her schedule of releases as well. As of right now, she's planning to get her delayed 1991 EP out on May 29 digitally and June 12 physically via Interscope. The cover art for that EP is below. She'll follow it with the Fantastic mixtape, which is due out on July 4, and includes her recently dropped track, "Jumanji," which was produced by Hudson Mohawke and Nick Hook. Grab that track above or stream it below. Finally, her debut full length, Broke With Expensive Taste, which is presumably the album she's been working on with Paul Epworth, is due out in September.

In other news, fresh off her feud with Iggy Azalea (who plays SOBs TONIGHT [5/17]), she's taken a stab at Lil Kim, who refused to collaborate with Azealia because Lil Kim wanted to write her own verse. Azealia had written it for her and insisted, "Everybody knows Lil Kim doesn't write her own raps." We already know that Kim's got beef with Nicki Minaj. Azealia, however, seems down with Nicki and would possibly collaborate with her, but thinks she should ditch the "ugly wigs and ugly costumes." Maybe they'll meet up when they both play Summer Jam next month. On the other hand, Azealia Banks has collaborated with Missy Elliot and Rye Rye on a remix of M.I.A.'s "Bad Girls." Look for that soon.

A list of all dates, Hot 97 Summer Jam lineup, 1991 cover art, and the "Jumanji" stream are below...

Rick Ross / DFA1979

DFA 1979

One Hanson Place, the cavernous ground-floor space of the Williamsburgh Savings Bank Tower, served as the venue for a free-if-you-could-get-in Vice-sponsored concert on Thursday. As expected, the Weeknd didn't appear (he canceled the week before). Instead, the main attractions were Rick Ross, Death From Above 1979, a half dozen other bands, free beer and liquor and the Art Deco interior itself. A second stage in the basement--located inside a room-sized vault, with giant metallic doors at its entrance--featured acts like Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Anamanaguchi, Hanni El Khatib, Total Slacker and the Men. A-Trak was supposed to play, but cancelled after the sudden passing of his friend DJ Mehdi.

Tanlines kicked off the upstairs with songs that were aided by the high-vaulted ceilings and the reverb-heavy acoustics. Death from Above 1979 didn't fare as well; their songs already sound blown out and distorted on record, and the live show sacrifices any remaining fidelity for raw power. That said, both Sebastien Grainger and Jesse Keeler--one in white, one in black--put on spirited performances, thrashing around, with Sebastien at one point crawling along the bank teller windows into the crowd.

Rick Ross took the stage around 1am, after a brief intro set from Maybach Music Group rapper Stalley. The boss's set of about 35 minutes sped through songs that included "John," "9 Piece," "Hustin", "BMF", "MC Hammer," DJ Khaled's "All I Do Is Win" and "I'm On One," Waka's "O Let's Do It," and "Tupac Back" and "Ima Boss" (both Meek Mill's songs I think technically), at least for a chorus or two. Directly in front of the stage, where Ross' verses and exhortations were crystal clear, you could really get a sense of his imposing presence (DJ seemed genuinely afraid after starting one song too soon) and his ability to queue up any tune and make it totally his.

The amount of people upstairs was comfortable and not-overpacked; the downstairs, then, could be described as sadly under-attended. Unknown Mortal Orchestra had the benefit of playing before the main-stage acts started and sounded great. Hanni El Khatib, who played as a two-piece, shuffled out grungy, Americana-influenced rock, but to an audience of only about 50. One of the most pleasant surprise for me was Anamanaguchi, who I haven't seen in a few years. The quartet has molded themselves into an impressive instrumental outfit--with their NES as a less-dominant member--as they navigated their songs' post-rock-inspired swoops and climaxes with skill.

The Men closed the night with a post-2am set for the stragglers that hadn't yet succumbed to the hazards of the open bar. On my way downstairs I passed a handful of people doubled over, getting carried out by the EMTs. Downstairs wasn't much safer: at one point, a mic stand went flying into the crowd landing squarely on someone's head (hope you're alright dude).

More pictures from most of the night below...
