"Sasquatch was hot. H-O-T. Not Paris Hilton "hot," but temperature hot. For a mossed-over clutch of Northwesterners who have been shrouded under rain and clouds for the past eight months, the brutal sun at the Gorge this weekend was a shocking jolt into summer. Sure, it was generally nice to be out in the sun, but any shade cover at the 'Squatch was few and far between, and there was almost no chance of relief. A small row of spindly trees dotted the upper walkway, and overheated concertgoers crammed themselves underneath them. When the sun dipped behind a cloud during Animal Collective's generally unimpressive set, the crowd cheered louder than they had for any band. Clothing sweated clean through, energy was conserved, and water was at a premium. It was a weekend of dizzy sunburning and frizzled brain." [Portland Mercury]The 2009 Sasquatch Festival ran from May 23-25 (Memorial Day Weekend) in Gorge, Washington. More pictures from Day One, below...

Guests on that album include Vampire Weekend's Ezra Koenig and Dirty Projectors' Angel Deradoorian. Two songs are at MySpace. The cover art and tracklist are below along with more pictures of Ra Ra Riot taken at this year's Sasquatch Festival....

"[The Shins] launched off with 'Australia' which is one of my favorites and I couldn't help but get giddy. They then proceeded through the next two songs on Wincing the Night Away without stopping. After a song or two, they introduced a special guest joining them on violin, and when I saw her, I was visibly the only person flipping out: It was Rebecca Zeller, the violinist of Ra Ra Riot! That review is from the first (5/18) of two nights the Shins played NYC's Terminal 5. The second was last night (5/21), and there was also a NJ show at Wellmont Theater (5/17). Delta Spirit opened all of them, and at least on the second NYC night, they destroyed a guitar. More pictures from last night (destroyed guitar included), with a Shins video and the setlist from 5/18, below...
A few songs come and go, equipped with some new songs (that they didn't have the decency to tell us the titles of), and a cover from, and I quote "One of the best f*cking bands in the world", also known in James Mercer's mind as The Beach Boys, all leading up to the best performance of the night: 'Caring is Creepy'. Every one in the room was singing their lungs out to this song, so much so that even though I was very close to James Mercer I couldn't hear him! When everyone is that connected and 'into' a song like that, how can that not affect you? " [Danish Poet]
"Though promoters around the country report strong early ticket sales for festivals and summer tours, the recession is causing jitters. This year Coachella, which has the most glamorous reputation of all American festivals, began selling tickets on layaway, and 18 percent of its customers took that option, Mr. Tollett said. With all the leaks of bands playing Lollapalooza this year, there are almost no surprises in the official lineup announcement, except maybe the Animal Collective DJ set... The whole thing below...
The proliferation of big festivals, like Bonnaroo near Nashville and Lollapalooza in Chicago, has not been without casualties. This year Langerado in Miami shut down, citing the economy. The Pemberton Festival in British Columbia is on hiatus after only one year, although its promoter, Live Nation, said the problem was permit delays." [NY Times]

Cut Off Your Hands released their debut LP, You & I, via Frenchkiss Records on January 20th. Since then the New Zealand band has spent a lot of time touring North America, including a stop in Austin for SXSW, but they haven't reached NYC yet - not since CMJ 2008 at least. That changes this Saturday, April 4th, when they open for Ra Ra Riot at Webster Hall (Tickets here).
If you're looking for something more-intimate, and less-Ra-Ra-Riot, you can wait until May when COYH will be back again - this time to play a few east coast headlining dates including one at Mercury Lounge on Thursday, May 7th. Tickets are now on sale. All dates below.
No word if the April 4th or May 7th shows will feature drummer Brent Harris, who posted a March 29th message to the band's Myspace announcing his intention to leave the band because of hearing problems possibly related to drumming and live music.
That message, three videos, and all tour dates below...
Following last year's inaugural event, festival producers began work immediately on resolving concerns expressed by fans in attendance. They have worked closely with their partners at NJ Transit to improve light-rail service and capacity. As an added value for 2009, festival goers who choose to travel to the site utilizing the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail line can ride for free throughout the weekend with their ALL POINTS WEST festival ticket. Additionally, based on the popularity of the ferry as a mode of transportation from lower Manhattan to Liberty State Park, the frequency and size of the ferryboats will increase at a reduced price for festival attendees.... The producers have also worked with their partners at Liberty State Park to improve the fan experience in the beer gardens. This year's areas will be larger, have shorter lines, and feature shade tents, views of the stages and food concessions...The second annual ALL POINTS WEST MUSIC & ARTS FESTIVAL returns to Liberty State Park in Jersey City, New Jersey Friday, July 31, Saturday, August 1 and Sunday, August 2. Like last year, bands will play on three stages, except "the Queen of the Valley stage has been changed to a Coachella-like tent creating an environment that will showcase comedy, DJs, electronic acts and bands."
More details on the items above will be posted at the apwfestival.com. The entire lineup (it's good!) and ticket info, below...

In late January the guard post at the top of the stairs in the Kimmel Center was eliminated.Just a few weeks after the NYU students refused to get out of the Kimmel Center cafeteria, Marnie Stern, Ra Ra Riot, A Place To Bury Strangers and Apache Beat shared a bill at a concert in the same building. Here are pictures of two of the bands that played the show last night (3/5)....
But now, only a short month later, the guard is back because of the recent protest by Take Back NYU.
The NYU Department of Public Safety has reinstated the guard at Kimmel -- as well as an additional guard on the 12th floor of Bobst Library -- in order to increase security after the protests.
"These stop-gap measures were taken out of prudence and caution following ... [the] events at Kimmel," said Jules Martin, NYU's vice president of Public Safety. [NYU Washington Square News]

Recorded at Utopia Sound Studio in Kauai, Hawaii, the album features 11 original compositions and a new version of "Trash," which was on their 1973 debut album. "It was amazing working with Todd again, and I think we were able to evoke the special sound of our first album and drag it by the hair into the present," says frontman Johansen.
Prior to the album's release, the New York Dolls-David Johansen (vocals); Sylvain Sylvain (guitar); Steve Conte (guitar); Brian Delaney (drums); and Sami Yaffa (bass)-will appear at the South By Southwest (SXSW) music conference and festival in Austin, TX. [as outlined above]

Ra Ra Riot @ Bowery Ballroom recently (more by Tim Griffin)
Many were disappointed when Ra Ra Riot's recently announced tour only contained one NYC date and it was not only an expensive benefit, but already sold out (sort of) (pics). Then came a second announcement. This time they added many more tour dates, mostly with Death Cab For Cutie, but still no NYC show. Today that changed. Tickets go on sale at noon for an April 4th show at Webster Hall.

The Ra Ra Riot dates are in addition to Ra Ra's previously announced dates, but still no new NYC date. No Death Cab NYC date either, though I'm sure they all have something secretly planned - maybe for the summer.
Passion Pit is currently out on tour with Cale Parks and remixed the Ra Ra Riot track you can download for free above.
Death Cab cover the Cure on the new Sweetheart comp, out January 30th at Starbucks. Ra Ra Riot will be releasing a CD single of "Can You Tell" via Barsuk Records on March 3rd. Tracklist below.

Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) is the nation's leading sexual and reproductive health care advocate and provider. For more than 90 years, we've done more than any other organization in the United States to improve women's health and safety, prevent unintended pregnancies, and advance the right and ability of individuals and families to make informed and responsible choices.Regina Spektor, Ra Ra Riot and The Bloodsugars made up the bill at the Planned Parenthood benefit concert that took place at Bowery Ballroom in NYC last night (1/22). There was also a raffle. To quote Tim, they "gave away a lot of high end pampering ($300 haircuts etc), 1 day of recording studio time, a vintage guitar, ipod touches, and a bunch of cds autographed by the bands and a meet n greet with Regina."
Tim also said Regina was amazing, and that many in the crowd thought so even more than him ("they kept crying out I LOVE YOU! every 2 minutes"). At the beginning of her long set, she forgot some lyrics, but "it didn't take long for the audience to sing along in unison to prompt her along." As you can see in the pictures, she had a big piano there on the Bowery Ballroom stage.
Ra Ra Riot put on "their usual good show", and Tim said that The Bloodsugars were a good opener "and really earnest". You can catch the Bloodsugars next at the Guilt By Association Vol. 2 Release Party at the same NYC venue on February 5th. Francis and the Lights and Savoir Adore are also on that bill. Ra Ra Riot don't have any other scheduled NYC dates at the moment, but they do have plenty of other tour dates.
More pictures from the show below...
Regina Spektor and Ra Ra Riot are playing the benefit for Planned Parenthood at Bowery Ballroom in NYC tonight. It was sold out, but now tickets are back on sale. (thx Klaus).

"On April 7, 2009, Merge Records will release the debut album from Seattle's Telekinesis entitled Telekinesis!. Telekinesis is the project of Michael Benjamin Lerner. Michael recorded Telekinesis! at Two Sticks Audio in Seattle with producer Chris Walla (Death Cab for Cutie, The Decemberists, Tegan and Sara). Michael wrote and sang all of the songs and played nearly all of the instruments on the album, but tours with a full band that includes David Broecker (guitar), Jonie Broecker (bass, keyboards), and Chris Staples (guitar)."Telekenisis have a few shows lined up for the next few months - none in NYC yet, but they will be playing Noise Pop, SXSW, and a bunch of dates with Ra Ra Riot.
Ra Ra Riot also have a bunch of shows lined up without Telekenisis. For NYC, it's just January 22nd at Bowery Ballroom which is the Planned Parenthood Benefit with Regina Spektor that sold out before it was even announced that they were also playing the show. They're also playing Noise Pop, and SXSW, and a bunch of dates with both Passion Pit and Cut Off Your Hands.
Cut Off Your Hands officially release their debut LP, You & I, via Frenchkiss Records on January 20th. Download the first single for free above. They're also playing SXSW (as are their labelmates Passion Pit).

When it comes to licensing, Tom Waits has a strong reputation..
Waits has steadfastly refused to allow the use of his songs in commercials and has joked about other artists who do. ("If Michael Jackson wants to work for Pepsi, why doesn't he just get himself a suit and an office in their headquarters and be done with it?") He has filed several lawsuits against advertisers who used his material without permission. He has been quoted as saying, "Apparently, the highest compliment our culture grants artists nowadays is to be in an ad -- ideally, naked and purring on the hood of a new car," he said in a statement, referring to the Mercury Cougar. "I have adamantly and repeatedly refused this dubious honor....Speaking in an interview in 2005 to NPR's All Things Considered, Waits bluntly says "I'd rather have a hot lead enema" than have a song in a commercial. At the time he was referring to products like Doritos, cars and diapers. His stance isn't as strong when it comes to a good cause. His song "Never Let Go" is the soundtrack to a new PSA by the Ad Council for Feeding America.
...In 2005, Waits sued Adam Opel AG, claiming that, after having failed to sign him to sing in their Scandinavian commercials, they had hired a soundalike singer. In 2007, the suit was settled, and Waits gave the sum to charity." [Wikipedia]
The campaign, shot by American History X director Tony Kaye, launched November 25th and is intended to raise awareness and drive action to fight hunger in America.
Created pro bono by Ogilvy NY, the new TV, radio, print, and web advertising aims to change the way Americans look at this critical issue affecting our country and to understand the fact that many people they interact with on a daily basis may not know where their next meal will come from...Waits says of the project: "We all need to be reminded that the folks who need help getting back on their feet are all members of our family." Watch the two different PSAs below.
"We are thrilled to partner with Feeding America to educate Americans about just how close hunger is to each one of us," according to Peggy Conlon, President & CEO of The Advertising Council. "I believe that the 1 in 8 campaign will inspire Americans to become involved in this critical issue."
"This work uses simple visual imagery to demonstrate the reality of the fact that everyone today knows someone who is hungry," said Antonio Navas and Chris Bradley, creative directors at Ogilvy who developed the campaign. "We were very fortunate to get musician Tom Waits to contribute a beautiful piece of music - "Never Let Go" off of 2006's Orphans -- that helps bring the work to life and connect with the public in a tangible way. We believe it will have great impact on this important cause."
Per the Ad Council model, the PSAs will be distributed to media outlets nationwide this week and will run and air in advertising time and space that is donated by the media.
Other Notable Licensing News:
Another band that usually passes on licensing requests for its music is Arcade Fire. The Canadian band decided to let its song "My Body Is A Cage" be used in the trailer for the new Brad Pitt movie, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.
According to the Arcade Fire's management, "This is the first time the band have used their music in this way. David Fincher asked them to look at the trailer. They all thought it was a good use of the music. They have no issue with licensing music when it's used in a creative way. It rarely happens." [Pitchfork]Watch the trailer below.
The soundtrack to Juno continues to inspire advertising creatives. One of Barry Louis Polisar's songs from that soundtrack, "All I Want Is You", gives it a go in a spot for the National Lottery in the UK. The commercial can be seen below.
I've seen the commercial for Ubisoft's new Prince Of Persia game on air this past week. Just like the trailer (watch it below), the spot features the song "Saeglopur" by Sigur Ros. This is the second video game featuring Sigur Ros music - EA's trailer for Dead Space (released in October 2008) uses "Track 7" as the soundtrack.
The Shins' "Sleeping Lessons" provides a cool soundtrack to Statkraft Energy's new European commercial. Watch it at Boards Mag.
Sony has released quite a few new commercials recently for both the PS3 and PSP that have good musical soundtracks. The "Mural" spot features "Everybody Ona Move" by Michael Franti & Spearhead, "LA Plays PSP" has The Grouch featuring MURS' "The Bay To LA", and "NYC Plays PSP" uses Chromeo's "Fancy Footwork". Watch the last one below.

Gogol Bordello @ Irving Plaza (more by Jefferson)
The second edition of this controversial new feature is back. "It's Not Selling Out Anymore" (or is it?)...
Aggressive racing game, Motorstorm, was one of the most successful titles for the Playstation 3 in 2007 (selling over three million copies world wide). It was only natural then, that Sony Computer Entertainment would get a sequel out in 2008. Enter Motorstorm: Pacific Rift. The game recently hit shelves in the US at end of October and in the UK this past week. The TV spot announcing the new game brilliantly matched Motorstorm's crazy, edgy style of racing on tracks in exotic locations with the "authentic energy" of Gogol Bordello's "Wonderlust King." Watch the video of the commercial below. Gogol Bordello tour dates are HERE.
While Gogol did not make the in-game soundrack, David Bowie, Clutch, Megadeth, The Hives, Simian Mobile Disco, Death From Above 1979, and more all made the cut. Eight of the forty-five songs are exclusive to the game including a remix by Diplo of Nirvana's "Swap Meet" *.
Speaking of exclusives, The Ramones' classic jam "Sheena Is A Punk Rocker" was covered by Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore and singer Jemina Pearl (from the now defunct Be Your Own Pet). Their version exclusively premiered in this past week's episode of Gossip Girl. Love & Rockets made the episode too...though not as an exclusive.
Other Notable Licensing News:
On the tube, One Tree Hill had songs by Ra Ra Riot and Margot & the Nuclear So-So's; 90210 had Florence & The Machine, The Raconteurs, and The Bravery; Grey's Anatomy had The Bird And The Bee, Whitest Boy Alive, and Brett Dennon.
M83's "You, Appearing" provides a solemn background to a French commercial for Douleurs' "Pain Without Borders" commercial. Watch the video below. M83 is currently on a tour of the US (and in NYC this week).

Leia stopped by Ra Ra Riot's free Virgin Megastore show the other today to take some pictures. The show was the same day RRR's new album came out on Barsuk and that is also the occasion that motivated them to release four pro-shot live-in-an-attic videos to the Internet. The first was debuted at Pitchfork. You may have seen the second one on Stereogum and you'll find the third is at the bottom of this post (under the rest of the pictures)....
