Rachel Zeffira was to have played The Slipper Room tonight but that show is canceled. The venue's website says "Visa issues" but she performed on WNYC last week, so we're not sure what happened. Hopefully she'll come back soon.

Rachel Zeffira

As mentioned, Cats Eyes singer Rachel Zeffira's solo debut, The Deserters, got its North American release last week (3/12) via Toronto's Paper Bag Records. If you haven't heard it, it's a lovely baroque pop that was clearly made by a classically trained musician who loves girl groups and My Bloody Valentine in equal measure. (It is a nice snowy morning record like NYC is currently experiencing.) You can stream it via Spotify below and check out the video to "Here On In."

Rachel will be playing a couple North American shows this spring, including one in NYC at The Slipper Room on May 6. Tickets are on sale now, and all dates (there are only two) are listed below.

Rachel Zeffira

Rachel Zeffira is one half of Cat's Eyes (the other half being Faris of the Horrors) and, as mentioned briefly, she released her bewitching solo debut, The Deserters, in late 2012 in the UK via her and Faris' own RAF Records. Resplendent with oboes, melotrons, cellos and other classical instruments and made with help from members of Toy and S.C.U.M., it's haunting baroque pop and well worth checking out, very much a January record.

While it gets a North American physical release in March via Paper Bag (it's out digitally this week), you can stream the whole thing below now. Also below is the new video for The Deserters' official single, "Here On In," which was directed by fashion photographer Yuval Hen.

Streams and video are below...

Rachel Zeffira of Cat's Eyes released her first solo album, The Deserters, today in the UK. Like her band (with Farris of The Horrors), it's vaguely '60s-ish, but quite lovely and makes for nice mellow listening. You can stream the whole album below.

How to Dress Well made a video for "& It Was U." Check it out below.

Cats Eyes

Cat's Eyes were supposed to play Bowery Ballroom tonight -- their first-ever U.S. show -- but ended up canceling their first U.S. shows due to "unforeseen circumstances." Hopefully those dates will be rescheduled soon. Their album, however, is out today digitally (CD/LP lovers must wait two weeks) and well worth picking up. With '60s pop as a starting point, Faris Badwan (of The Horrors, who have a new album out this summer) and multi-instrumentalist Rachel Zeffira have crafted their own melancholic, lush and rather lovely take on '60s pop. You can download "Not a Friend" from their website and there are a couple videos below. Faris and Zeffira were over last month to discuss their roundabout recording process, obscure girl groups, and making their live debut at The Vatican.

We talked about how they met, recording the new album, Chris Cunningham, the Vatican, Joe Meek, Henry Mancini, the band name & more. Read our chat below...
