I've been announcing individual bands on this party before now. Finally we have the full exciting lineup!

You know M For Montreal as the Canadian festival we've visited for two years in a row. Their yearly festival showcases bands from their home city in their home city, and they take that show on the road each year to both CMJ in NYC and SXSW in Austin (we already announced their official 2010 night showcase).

Being that we are such huge fans of so many Montreal bands, I thought it would be a great idea see if they wanted do a party together... and here we are. The lineup mixes some of our favorite Montreal bands with some or our other favorite Canadian (like Jason Collett of Broken Social Scene) and non-Canadian bands (like Andrew WK).

We have 13 bands total, a DJ set by another band, free ice cream from the Ice Cream Man (some of which is vegan), free vegan food courtesy of Austin's own Daily Juice and other surprises (drink specials on this particular party are pending). We're also proud to announce that KEXP is the official radio sponsor of all BV day parties this year. You'll find them, video cameras in hand, at many of our day parties throughout the week including this one. Those in attendance at this show will also have a chance to check out and win a pair of Nudie Jeans (another one of our kind sponsors).

Also unlike any other BV day party, this one is officially part of SXSW. That does NOT mean you need a badge. NO BADGES REQUIRED for this free show, but you will find the party listed on SXSW.com (and you can add it to your schedule on there). Full lineup with set times below...

Brooklyn's Au Revoir Simone release their second full-length, Still Night, Still Light, next month and are about to head out on on a European tour (where their album comes out this month). As a warm up though, Annie, Erika and Heather are playing a "secret" show this Monday (4/13) at Union Pool. Tickets are also on sale now for two upcoming proper NYC shows: May 29 at Music Hall of Williamsburg, which will start their U.S. tour and then Bowery Ballroom on June 27 which comes at the end. Full dates are still pending.

Still Night, Still Light was produced by Thom Monahan who is a member of The Pernice Brothers and has recently twiddled knobs for Vetiver, Little Joy, and The Broken West. Au Revoir Simone played a really nice set last month as part of the Brooklynvegan day party during SXSW, and footage of them performing new song "All or Nothing" is at the bottom of this post. You can also check out early versions of three songs from the new album (which I like a lot) over at The Recess Sessions, which were filmed by Vincent Moon of La Blogothèque Take-a-Way show fame.

The Van Pelt played their first show in 10+ years at the Radio Room in Austin on March 21st as part of the Slip/Lovitt Day Party which also included sets by Young Widows (who are playing Brooklyn on April 1st), Pygmy Lush, Cursive (who played a BV party at the same venue two days earlier), and Frodus.

The Van Pelt occupied the slot before Frodus (which was before Cursive) on the main stage, and I was glad that I was able to catch all of their set before the rambunctiousness of Frodus. Talent obviously oozes out of the Leo clan (guitarist/vocalist Chris Leo is Ted's younger bro), as I found The Van Pelt's live show to be heartfelt, melodic, and just plain gorgeous. Here's to hoping that NYC gets a shot to see them again. For those unfamiliar with the band, there's a little history below the rest of the pictures, below...

Frodus @ The Slip/Lovitt Party @ Radio Room, 3/21

Beyond all the fucking clamor, hubbub, brouhaha... the "Guitar Hero Metallica" if you will, one band absolutely killed it with little to no "corporate sponsorshit". But maybe that's because the band in question is a corporate entity unto themselves... Frodus Conglomerate International.

Frodus's triumphant return to the stage at the Slip Productions / Lovitt Records party at SXSW on March 21st was amazing in a way that could only be topped by a second show at Red 7 about 8 hours later.... which they did (more on that show, pics included, to come).

The DC band ran through many of the numerous highlights of their catalog with their fill-in bassist, Liam of Dillinger Escape Plan, including the "explosive" (apologies) conclusion to the show... "Explosions" from Conglomerate International (out NOW on Ltd Ed 2LP, 45RPM). Stage dives, flying chairs, heaving and flailing bodies, random vocalists... Frodus was back. I'll let the pictures do the talking.

These Arms Are Snakes / Thao / Daniel Johnston & Hymns

Thirteen bands were scheduled to play the BrooklynVegan / Agency Group day party in Austin on Thursday, March 19, 2009. Twelve ended up playing - one of them twice. I think the story is that The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, who had a zillion other shows also scheduled during the SXSW week, got confused about what their set time was. For that reason (and traffic), they showed up too late to go on in their slot. Instead, The Wheel, who was our last-minute addition as opener on the inside stage, immediately went outside and played a second set on the larger outdoor stage in the late band's place. We got at least one "boo" when the "scheduling mixup" was announced, but what could we do? (sorry!) It was awesome of the Wheel to fill on a moment's notice. Hopefully the people outside enjoyed him after they got over the awkwardness. I didn't watch his second set, but he sounded amazing inside.

Due to overlap on the two stages, it was hard to see everyone that played the party. The most painful two decisions were Cursive or the Wrens, and These Arms or Snakes or Daniel Johnston. I think we originally had it worked out a little better in terms of that, but the main stage started to run late. I went back and forth and caught pieces of as much as I could (and all of Daniel).
