4Knots Fest

NYC's free, all-ages 4Knots Music Festival went down across two stages at the South Street Seaport. On the main stage (Pier 16), Radkey kicked things off with their classic-style punk, and (as you can see in the video below) at one point the PA cut out but they just kept rocking. Northampton indie rockers Speedy Ortiz followed with a set that stretched as far back as their early pre-Sports single "Taylor Swift" up through their brand new "Bigger Party" which came out the day before the festival. Ex-Women band Viet Cong followed with a set of their jammy post-punk.

Those Darlins were fun, peppering their set with covers (The Crystals' "Then He Kissed Me" and Dylan's "The Man In Me"). If anyone was going to fall into the river during 4Knots, it would've been during Mac DeMarco's set, but he kept things fairly shenanigan-free. Dinosaur Jr. capped off the evening with an enjoyable and hit-packed set (that is how you Festival, bands) that had a pit/crowdsurfers going the whole time (video of that below).

The other stage was the Front/Row stage over on Fulton St (not exactly where they set up for Seaport Music Festival but almost) with a handful of smaller acts, including day openers and '90s-loving Dead Stars, plus Crazy Pills, Juan Wauters, and heartland rockers Nude Beach. Pictures from their sets, and more of the rest of 2014 4Knots fest, below....

"We're going to be the money source and it's really scary. But you never get anywhere unless you put yourself out there, so we're really putting ourselves out there. My dad's going to be our manager--he's been on every tour so far. He's totally cool. He actually makes everything easier because he does all the talking, comes to business stuff, and we just get to not worry about it. For instance, I woke up an hour ago and I had forgotten I had the interview, so he wakes me up and tells me what I have to do. I just hang out and write music." [Radkey to Interview Magazine]
Young Missouri trio Radkey, who happen to also be brothers and who maybe you caught when they toured with Red Fang, played Santos with the Orwells, or at Afro Punk Fest, will bring their polished punk rock sound back to NYC in February before heading overseas for a tour of the UK, and ending up in Texas for the SXSW grind (again).

The NYC gigs are an early one at Mercury Lounge on 2/20 with Your Skull My Closet, and a more recently added show one day earlier (on 2/19) at a venue they are old enough to get into, Death By Audio with Netherlands, Eula, and Shark?.

All dates are listed with songs and videos below...

With about 20 albums under their belt, it was interesting to see what songs Guided By Voices would pick for their Riot Fest set. Keeping in mind that most audience members might not be familiar with everything in their vast discography, frontman Robert Pollard announced each song's name with a short introduction throughout the whole set. The band opened with "Xeno Pariah" and followed up with songs like "Island," "Shocker in Gloomtown," and "The Challenge Is Much More," only stopping to take a quick swig from a small bottle to oil up his voice. [BV Chicago]
Riot Fest Chicago (the second of three Riot Fests this year) continued on Saturday (9/14) for its second of three days. The second day had tons of multi-generational alternative music representation including punk's late '70s heyday (Blondie, X, FLAG -- the Keith Morris version of Black Flag), second wave ska (The Selecter), third wave ska (Rancid), classic indie rock (Dinosaur Jr., Violent Femmes, Guided by Voices), modern indie rock (Surfer Blood, Stars, The Sidekicks), classic hip hop (Public Enemy), and turn-of-the-millenium poppunk/emo/post-hardcore (blink-182, Taking Back Sunday, Glassjaw). Pictures from that day are in this post, and there's more pictures, plus a review, over at BV Chicago.

Update: Day 3 pictures are here and here.

If you missed them, check out day 1 pics and more day 1 pics. More of day 2, below...

Those recent additions join previously announced names like Torche, White Lung, Bouncing Souls, Ceremony, Braid, Paint It Black, Samiam, Knapsack (reunion), The Draft (reunion), The Menzingers, The Lawrence Arms, Hop Along, Code Orange Kids, Creative Adult, Pity Sex, Mean Jeans, Retox, Lemuria, Greys, Tenement, Tim Barry, Toys That Kill, The Night Marchers and more. Circle Takes The Square returned in December, 2012 with Decompositions Volume Number One, their first album of new material since reuniting and second overall. It's not the instant masterpiece that their 2004 debut, As the Roots Undo, is, but it's still damn good. Download it in its entirety at bandcamp (name your price) or stream it in its entirety, along with the updated The Fest lineup, below.
