Where has crowd-funding led us? Perhaps the direction of Real Estate's new video for "Crime" (from this year's Atlas). In it, director Tom Scharpling (as played by Andy Daly of Comedy Central's The Review) explains that the video was paid for by different people in exchange for product placements and video concepts. So it becomes a cinematic edsel with undead skateboarders, ceramic figurines, a tribute to yesteryear, celebrity cameos and...maybe the Westboro Baptist Church. You can watch it below.
Having wrapped up their North American tour, Real Estate will be in Europe starting next month before returning for North American festival dates and then their biggest NYC show yet at Terminal 5 on October 2. Tickets are still available.

In addition to Real Estate, there will be performances from Woods, Angel Olsen, White Fence, Foxygen, Skygreen Leopards and more. Tickets go on sale April 15 at noon PST via Woodsist and Folk Yeah.

Austin's Pure X have signed with Fat Possum who will release their new album, Angel, on April 1. That's the groovy cover art above, and that motif seems to be evident in the music as well. The band just released the song "Starlight" and it's as smooth as the ride in a custom Chevy van. You can stream it below.
Pure X will be in Monterrey, Mexico for Festival NRML next month and will then hook up with Real Estate for the East Coast leg of their North American tour, including Webster Hall on April 4. Tickets to Webster Hall are still available.

One of the coolest festivals in the world, Barcelona's Primavera Sound will hold its 2014 edition from May 29 - 31. We mentioned earlier that Real Estate would be playing the 2014 Noise Pop Festival in San Francisco, where they've actually got two shows at The Independent: February 28 with Dream Boys, and March 1 with Dominant Legs. What we haven't done is run down this year's fest which happens at venues all over San Francisco from February 25 - March 2.
In addition to Real Estate, this year's Noise Pop (now in its 21st year) features such acts as Throwing Muses, Cold Cave, Mark Mulcahy, Mikal Cronin, Bob Mould, No Age, The Fresh & Onlys, Dr. Dog, Courtney Barnett, Cheatahs, and lots more. Badges that get you into all events are on sale now.

Real Estate just let fly the first song from their new album, Atlas, which is due March 4 via Domino. (Pre-orders are available now.) If you haven't heard "Talking Backwards" yet, it's a good one, light, tight, and poppy -- you can stream it below.
The band will heading out on tour around the release of the album, beginning with the Noise Pop Festival in San Francisco, and the trek wraps up in NYC with a show at Webster Hall on April 5. Tickets are on sale now.
No SXSW dates announced, but there is a gap in their schedule during that time. All dates are listed, along with the video for the new song, below...
Real Estate just announced details of their third album -- it's called Atlas and will be out March 4 via Domino. That's the cover art above. The first-released song from the LP, "Talking Backwards," is a nice bit of strummy pop and you can watch the video for it in this post.
While no live dates have been announced yet, NYC can catch bassist Alex Bleeker with his band & the Freaks at Death by Audio on Saturday (1/18) with Each Other, Nurse and Soldier, Tonstartssbandht, and Baked.
Video for "Talking Backwards," and Atlas' tracklist, is below.
It's the first snowfall of 2014, and not only a pretty big one, but we've also been given such freezing temperatures that it's probably not going anywhere anytime soon. New York actually got it pretty easy in comparison to nearby cities, but there's still a bunch of school closings, road closings, and flight cancellations in the area. (Nothing stops the cronut line, though.) So there's a good chance you're staying in today (maybe you're shoveling, like new Mayor Bill de Blasio), and if you are, we've put together 14 snow-related songs for your first snowfall of 2014 that you can spend the day inside listening to.
Have at it below...
Real Estate at Treasure Island 2013 (more by Autumn Andel)
Real Estate have been relatively quiet lately, though they do have a third album in the works, but they will play a last-minute NYC one-off happening on Saturday (12/7) at Baby's All Right with Chicago's Bare Mutants (who are touring), Free Time, and Turnip King. Tickets for that show go on sale today (12/6) at 11 AM. Their only other announced date at the moment is San Francisco's Noise Pop Festival in 2014.
And you can also see Turnip King tonight at Emet (75 Stewart Ave in Brooklyn) for the Showpaper benefit that also includes Painted Zeros, No One and the Somebodies, Hippy and Gingerlys.

Beck / James Blake / Japandroids
Being an "I told you so" person is never a good look, but seeing everyone freak the fuck out over the sisters Haim at Treasure Island was kind of like, "well, yeah." They excel as performers, and everything about the way Haim presents itself to the world is somehow both impeccably rehearsed and completely natural and off-the-cuff. It's a wonder that it took the three sisters until their mid-twenties, even, to shred together for an elated, packed festival crowd, screaming while San Francisco sparkled in the background. I saw them play maybe six or seven years ago, to a handful of people at the Knitting Factory in Hollywood, and even then it was a no-brainer: Haim was a name we'd all be hearing. But don't necessarily expect Days Are Gone, their new successful new solo debut, to paint this whole picture; If anything the LP is just a roadmap for Haim's live show, which thrives on a shared musical chemistry that's better than anything that can be planned in advance. [SF Weekly]The 2013 Treasure Island Music Festival wrapped up on Sunday (10/20) after beginning a day earlier. Unlike day 1's mostly-electronic lineup, day 2 sold its turntables and bought guitars for sets from Beck, Sleigh Bells, Japandroids, Real Estate, Haim, Lord Huron, Palma Violets and more. Alright, James Blake and Animal Collective played too, but you get the picture. You can check out a set of pictures of day 2 in this post.
If you missed them, day 1 pics are here. More of day 2 below...

We've mentioned that UK band Hookworms, who we profiled back in April, are one of our "30 Artists Worth Seeing at CMJ." One of the places you can see them is at the free Friday BrooklynVegan day party (details soon we swear!). It's one of five appearances for the Leeds quintet:
Thursday 10/17 - Bowery Ballroom 9 PMAs I wrote before, Hookworms "practice a visceral blend of noise, drone, motorik rhythms and impassioned vocals that basically demands to be listened to at top volume" which will hopefully be the level they'll be playing at for their CMJ shows. The band's terrific debut album, Pearl Mystic, was released by Domino imprint Weird World in September. Maybe even better is the band's non-LP single "Radio Tokyo / On Returning." You can stream that single and a few LP tracks in this post. The band are currently finishing up their second full-length. Catch them this week if you can.
Friday 10/18 - BV day party (time TBA)
Friday 10/18 - Fader Fort 7:30 PM
Saturday 10/19 - Knitting Factory 2 PM
Saturday 10/19 Death by Audio - 11:30 PM
Streams and more details on their CMJ shows below...
