The Drums at Surf Lodge during Memorial Day Weekend (via)
The Drums

Montauk's Surf Lodge, a restaurant, hotel and sometimes concert venue booked by C3 (Lollapalooza, ACL), have partnered with SPIN for two shows this summer. Dirty Projectors will play the venue on June 30 and Real Estate on July 7. It's about a three-hour drive from NYC, but is a great vacation spot, so if you're hoping to see these bands and want an excuse to go to the Hamptons, this would be a good time. Hopefully you won't have any memory-erasing experiences while you're there.

In related news, the Surf Lodge is no longer owned by Edgemere Montauk, LLC. Curbed Hamptons reports that it was recently sold to Michael Walrath's investmenet company, Montauk Properties, LLC. The lodge has also got a new team to help revitalize their guestrooms, landscaping, menu, juices, music, workout and more. The Summer 2012 Concert Series is being overseen by GrandLife's Tommy Saleh and Mandy Brooks. That series kicked off over Memorial Day Weekend with a show by The Drums. The photo above is from that show. No word on what other shows will go down this summer yet (besides Dirty Projectors and Real Estate).

The War on Drugs and Dean & Britta also have a show coming up in Long Island.

Dirty Projectors also have other upcoming shows including two in NYC: MHOW on 7/9 and Prospect Park on 7/10, the latter of which you can win tickets to.

Real Estate have other shows too, including a NYC show at Webster hall on August 11 with R. Stevie Moore and Andrew Cedermark. Tickets for that show are still available.

Updated lists of dates for both bands are below...

Real Estate at Coachella 2012 (more by Dana (distortion) Yavin)
Real Estate

As mentioned, Real Estate are set to kick off a North American tour this summer, not long after they play Pitchfork Festival in Chicago. That tour includes the previously discussed NYC show at Webster Hall on August 11, to which tickets are still on sale.

You'll be able to catch Real Estate in the NYC-area even sooner than that when they play a hometown (before they moved to Brooklyn) show in Ridgewood, NJ at the Kasschau Memorial Shell on June 24 with fellow Ridgewood bands Toasted Plastic and Spook Houses. The show is a benefit for the Nick Currey Fund and it is free but donations are appreciated. Advance $15 donations will gain you VIP access and enter you into a drawing for autographed Real Estate merchandise.

Updated dates are listed below, along with a Real Estate song stream.

Coachella 2012 - Day 3
Coachella 2012 - Day 3
Coachella 2012 - Day 3

"Weekend one of Coachella 2012 not only confirmed rock fans' rabid appetite for live music but reminded the music industry that the past is a lot closer than it used to be. There were no rock acts from the 1960s or early '70s on the bill. The look back was dedicated to Coachella's continuing affection for reuniting British bands from the late '70s and early '80s--this year, it was Buzzcocks, James, Madness, Pulp and Squeeze. Other reuniting bands on the bill included American alt-rock bands Firehose, Mazzy Star and At the Drive-In; and Refused, a punk group from Sweden that hadn't been heard from since 1998. One could argue that the "appearance" by the late Shakur was an admission that to become a musical force again, West Coast rap needs a resurrection. Though the beats conceived and developed by Dr. Dre, Shakur, Snoop Dogg and others are now woven into rock and pop's vocabulary, rap had little presence at Coachella 2012, save for the ingenuity of the late Sunday-night oldies show.

And if there was any doubt that electronic dance music is a dominating force, even if it's still underappreciated by the mainstream, Swedish House Mafia and Justice played the main stage. The big tent dedicated to dance music was rarely less than filled to a boisterous overflow." [Wall Street Journal]

It's actually hard to believe that after all that went on over the weekend THE EXACT SAME COACHELLA IS ABOUT TO HAPPEN AGAIN. But back to last weekend for a second...

You already saw pictures from Friday and Saturday, video of an idiot falling off a wooden structure, watched Frank Ocean's set, and Azealia Banks's. The Weeknd's too. You saw Refused's setlist and some videos. You already know what At The Drive-In played on Sunday, and streamed their set in full after you were done watching Real Estate's and M83's, not to mention parts of Bon Iver's and Andrew Bird's. You're already well aware that Dr. Dre & Snoop Dogg and many special guests headlined on Sunday, and you even saw the pictures of them and watched the Tupac hologram video. Now here are the rest of the Sunday pictures, and they continue, below....

The Shins

As mentioned, The Shins (who are part of the just-announced Lollapalooza lineup) are heading out on tour in support of their recently released LP, Port of Morrow. That tour hits NYC at Terminal 5 for three shows. The openers for those shows have been announced and it's St. Lucia on 4/29, Chairlift on 4/30, and Real Estate on 5/1. The show with St. Lucia is sold out but tickets for the other two shows are available. We're also giving away a pair of tickets to the 4/30 show with Chairlift. Details on how to enter to win tix are with all tour dates below.

Meanwhile, Chairlift has other dates coming up including a headlining show at Webster Hall on May 8. Tickets for that show are still on sale. Like The Shins, Chairlift are also playing Lollapalooza this year.

Bonfire Nights
Bonfire Nights

The annual post-SXSW Aussie BBQ is happening March 25 at the Bell House in Brooklyn, with a whopping 14 performers throughout the all-day event: Big Scary, Bonfire Nights, Busby Marou, Jonti, Jordie Lane, Oh Mercy, The Jefferson, Teeth & Tongue, Voltaire Twins, Wazu, Luluc, Pets with Pets, Traveller & Fortune, and Saskia Sansom.

Oh Mercy
Oh Mercy

With the only determining factor being country of origin, it's a disparate lineup, ranging from gentle folk (Jordie Lane, Luluc, Traveller & Fortune and Saskia Sansom), wide appeal pop (Big Scary, The Jefferson), psych rock (Bonfire Nights, Pets with Pets), synth/glitch/electro (Voltaire Twins, Jonti, Wazu), indiepop (Oh Mercy) and Teeth & Tongue, who is a little like Anna Calvi. Literally something for everyone. Unless all you like is jazz or metal or some other genre not listed above.

At the bottom of this post there's videos and music streams for every artist on the bill. Tickets are $12 -- that's less than a dollar per band. Pretty good deal and a fun way to spend a Sunday.

In addition to playing SXSW and the Aussie BBQ, Big Scary and Teeth & Tongue are going on more extensive North American dates (though not together) and those dates can be found at the bottom of this post. For Big Scary they included gigs at Mercury Lounge and Glasslands.

You can also grab a Big Scary tracks as part of a free mixtape they're giving away on Bandcamp, and as part of a free Family Records SXSW 2012 mixtape. The mixtape also contains songs by Savoir Adore, We Are Augustines and 10 others.

Twerps
The Twerps

While not part of the BBQ, Australia's Twerps (who made one of my favorite albums of 2012) will be over for SXSW too. After Austin, they're coming to New York for two shows:  March 29 at 285 Kent with Ducktails and March 30 at Mercury Lounge with The Mad Scene. After playing here, Twerps hit the road with Real Estate for an extensive North American tour and those dates are at the bottom of this post, along with a new video for album track "Through the Day."

Speaking of Hamish Kilgour (who is in the The Mad Scene), The Clean also just announced dates that bring them to Le Poisson Rouge this year.

Click through for videos and streams by all the Aussie BBQ bands, plus tour dates for Big Scary, Teeth & Tongue, and Twerps.

Nada Surf
Nada Surf

The column comes early as it's a busy week and there are lots of shows to talk about. First up, venerable NYC trio Nada Surf's new album, The Stars Are Indifferent to Astronomy, is out today and the band play Bowery Ballroom this evening to celebrate. Tonight's show is sold out but Nada Surf will be streaming the show live via their YouTube channel starting at 10PM. The band then head out for a good two months of touring and all dates are at the bottom of this post.

The band's seventh album, The Stars Are Indifferent to Astronomy, is another fine record in Nada Surf's catalog of positive-vibe guitar pop, bolstered this time out by Doug Gillard who provides a lot of great lead work. This kind of music may not be in fashion right now, but it also never really goes out of style. And they do it really well You can stream or download the ebullient first single "Waiting for Something" at the bottom of this post and Spotify users can listen to the album here.

Cloud Nothings - 'Attack on Memory'
Cloud Nothings - Attack on Memory

Also out today: Cloud Nothings' Attack on Memory which, as Andrew noted a couple weeks ago, is much more sophisticated and agressive than the tuneful pop-punk the band have released in the past. They're still writing catchy songs -- check out "Stay Useless at the top of this post -- but the shift is fairly radical, so much so that main man Dylan Baldi briefly considered changing the name of the band. (It's not that radical.) It's a very good album, and you can listen to it on Spotify and watch the brand-new video for "No Future/No Past" at the bottom of this post.

The album, you may have seen, got Best New Music on the 'Fork yesterday, and despite this there are still tickets to be had for Cloud Nothings' show this Thursday (1/26) at The Studio @ Webster Hall though I imagine not for long. Knowing how good the band are live (what a drummer!) I'm really anxious to hear these songs live. It's a one-off show, but the band will tour starting mid-February including, need I say it, time in Austin for SXSW. All dates are at the bottom of this post.

The Hundred in the Hands - Bowery Ballroom Feb. 2011 (more)
Hundred in the Hands

The Hundred in the Hands are playing their first show in a long time this Friday (1/27) at Glasslands, which will give us the first taste of the duo's second album which will be out on Warp at some point this year. While they haven't released any tracks from it yet, they are still updating the THITH Zine, the band's culture zine that most recently interview artist Zander Blom. There's a lot of interesting stuff in the archives that's worth checking out.

My Best Fiend
My Best Fiend

A lot of people will be at Glasslands on Friday just to check out THITH's Warp labelmates My Best Fiend whose album In Ghostlike Fading is out February 21. My Best Fiend are not your typical Warp act, closer to the space blues of Spiritualized or My Morning Jacket (or Neil Young) than the electronic music that fills most of the label's roster. The band have been plugging away in the Brooklyn scene for upwards of seven years and its good to see it pay off for them. You can download album-opener "Higher Palms" at the top of this post and you can stream "Cracking Eggs" (which features Light Asylum's Shannon Fuchness) further down.

The Glasslands show also features duo Bikini who make unapologetic four-on-the-floor dancefloor fodder, and Bear in Heaven will be DJing between sets, hopefully not playing all the records at 400,000% slower than normal.

Guy Harvey
Guy Harvey

And finally we have Florida's Guy Harvey, which is a band and not a solo artist and should not to be confused with Elbow frontman Guy Garvey which I did for half a second. The band are on tour with Gainsville residents Averkiou and hit NYC this weekend for two shows: Friday (1/27) at Cake Shop and Saturday (1/28) at Death by Audio. All GH/Averkiou dates are at the bottom of this post.

You may recognize Guy Harvey frontman Adam Perry from his moonlighting gig as an auxiliary member of Surfer Blood. There's not a lot of Guy Harvey music out there to listen to, but both sides of a 2010 7" (streamable below) are ace, with a strong Flying Nun influence. If you liked the Twerps album from last year, give Guy Harvey a listen. Averkiou, meanwhile, make fuzzy, shoegazy pop not too far from early Teenage Fanclub. Check out a few streaming tracks at the bottom of this post.

Friday's Cake Shop show is with Byrdsy locals Slow Country whose new album is a name-your-price download at their Bandcamp and is quite nice. Saturday's show at Death by Audio also has underrated Brooklyn bands I'm Turning Into and Bright Lights. Either show is worth checking out. Or go to both!

That's the main stuff for this week. Below are a few more picks, day-by-day, of shows not covered otherwise.

The Hairs
The Hairs

TUESDAY, JANUARY 24

There's a TWII-approved line-up at East Village mainstay Lit Lounge -- that is now booking bands I've heard of again -- with The Hairs (new single out next month), Pigeons, and Gross Relations.

Friends have shown up on most of the "Bands to Watch in 2012" lists. Go watch them in 2012, tonight, at Cameo as part of a very solid bill with Phonetag and Spanish Prisoners.

Girls @ Terminal 5
Girls

Girls played their largest NYC show yet (an understatement) on Saturday (1/14) when they headlined the sold out Terminal 5 with Real Estate and King Krule. Girls, with their flowers and trio of female backup singers in tow (like they had at their Bowery Ballroom shows), played almost the entire Father, Son, Holy Ghost, in addition to cuts from Album and the Broken Dreams Club EP.

Real Estate only played material from the recently released Days, save for "Fake Blues," from their debut album, and a cover of jangly post-punkers Felt's "Sunlight Bathed the Golden Glow," which if you didn't know was a cover, could have easily passed as a b-side off Days.

With their new albums, Girls and Real Estate are becoming some of the fastest growing bands in indie, but opener King Krule (and Girls' True Panther labelmate) doesn't seem too far behind them. His set at the T5 show was just after he had played sold out shows at Glasslands and Mercury Lounge earlier that week. His feedback seems pretty positive but the twitterverse seems to agree that his set was suffering from bad sound at Terminal 5. Review and pics of the Mercury Lounge show HERE and Glasslands pics HERE.

Real Estate and Girls both DJ'd at the show's afterparty at Tribeca Grand. How was that? Real Estate have more dates coming up including one for only $5.00 in Queens.

More pictures and setlists from the Terminal 5 show, and a new set of west coast Girls tour dates, below...

Girls @ Fun Fun Fun Fest 2011 (more by Tim Griffin)
Girls

Girls, who are playing the sold out Coachellas this year, play their big sold out headlining show at Terminal 5 tonight (1/14) along with support from Real Estate and King Krule (who also played Glasslands and Mercury Lounge this past week).

Tonight's afterparty goes down at the Tribeca Grand hotel, upstairs in the Club Room, where Girls, Real Estate, Sky Ferreria, Ilirjana, and Dean from True Panther are all DJing. Expensive Looks is performing live. Like all "Live From Tribeca" events, it's free with rsvp: events@grandlifenyc.com.
Update: Action Bronson was also added to the bill.

In related news, tickets are still on sale for Real Estate's upcoming show at K&K Super Buffet.

Black Dice at PS1 in 2011 (more by Erez Avissar)
Black Dice

Brooklyn experimentalists Black Dice will release their new album, Mr. Impossible on April 10 via the Domino-related Ribbon Music. It's the followup to Repo which was released almost exactly three years prior via Paw Tracks. Grab the single, "Pigs," above and watch the video for it below. The album artwork and tracklist is also below.

Black Dice were added to the Real Estate show at K&K Super Buffet on January 28 in Queens, which is part of Real Estate's tour with The Babies. Dogleather is also on the bill and Oneohtrix Point Never and Ducktails will DJ. $5.00 tickets are on sale NOW.

In related news, Real Estate member Alex Bleeker and the Freaks have two NYC shows coming up. They play Mercury Lounge on February 4 with La Big Vic and Family Portrait. Tickets are on sale now. They also play Glasslands on March 5 with Young Prisms, Boy Friend, and Tanks Amigo. Tickets for that show are on sale now too. The Glasslands show is part of a tour that Young Prisms will be heading out on. All dates for that tour are listed below.

Real Estate at Williamsburg Waterfront (more by Dana (distortion) Yavin)
Real Estate

Tom Scharpling of "The Best Show on WFMU" directed a new video for Real Estate's "Easy". Check that out below.

The band begins a string of East Coast dates this weekend bookended by a pair of NYC shows. As discussed, look for the band to hit the sold-out Terminal 5 on Saturday (1/14) with Girls and King Krule (who also plays two OTHER sold-out shows this week), but ALSO look for Real Estate to team with The Babies and Dogleather to play K&K Super Buffet in Queens on January 28th. Not familiar with K&K?

K&K SUPER BUFFET is a transformer. Family-style Chinese steam-table buffet restaurant by day... soaring ceiling-ed, opulently decorated, decadent party palace and cheap-assed bar by night. Lots of rooms and zones, great sight lines and terrific vibes. Just off the Myrtle/Wyckoff L train, just over the Queens border in Bushwick Heights, aka Ridgewood, with ample parking for anyone driving in.
Todd P says, "ONLINE ADVANCED TICKETS GO ON SALE SOON". All tour dates are listed below.

Real Estate will also play Coachella 2012, alongside names like Radiohead, Pulp, At The Drive In, Justice, fIREHOSE, Refused, Bon Iver, and many many more.

All tour dates and that "Easy" video is below.

Coachella

Coachella which is taking place over the course of two weekends this year (April 13-15 and 20-22) revealed their 2012 lineup. Last week, Azealia Banks was the first artist confirmed, and earlier today they confirmed The Weeknd (maybe he found a band?), and before that, Jimmy Cliff, Breakbot, and Housse De Racket. The reunited Pulp then announced itself. The full lineup also includes headliners The Black Keys, Radiohead, Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg, not to mention, as predicted, the reunited At the Drive In and the reunited Mazzy Star (!), and Madness and Refused (!) and Jeff Mangum and many, many more that you can see below...

Real Estate

New Jersey's Real Estate just celebrated the month anniversary of their new LP Days recently. The Domino-released record features "Green Aisles" (downloadable above/streaming below) and "It's Real" which has a video you can watch below. Real Estate have a sold-out Bowery Ballroom to contend with on 11/23 (tomorrow) with Big Troubles and Liquor Store as part of their US tour, but if you missed the boat on tickets you can also catch them supporting Girls at Terminal 5 on 1/14. Tickets are still available for that one. As far as headlining shows go, I don't think they've reached the same status as Girls yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if their next NYC show is at Webster Hall.

All Real Estate dates, those streams and a recent take-away show featuring a perfromance of "Green Aisles" is below.

Real Estate's North American tour got underway this week -- they're in Salt Lake tonight and will hit Bowery Ballroom the night before Thanksgiving (11/23). Their New Jersey/Bushwick neighbors Big Troubles open all dates, which are helpfully listed at the bottom of this post. After then the band head to Europe for a few dates in December.

In the meantime, the band just debuted the video to their undeniably catchy single "It's Real."  If you love dogs and the band Real Estate, you will probably also enjoy this video. Watch it below.

Real Estate @ Astoria Bohemian Hall - 10/15/2011 (photo by nadkisson)
Real Estate

Real Estate played a free record release show at Astoria Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden on Saturday (10/15). It was supposed to be their "ONLY NYC performance until their headlining show at Bowery Ballroom in November." They lied! I don't think they're playing the Domino CMJ show (like John Maus is), but you can catch them at Other Music in NYC tonight...

Real Estate have a new full-length dropping on Domino next week, and you can be the first on your block to grab a copy of this much-anticipated album, get it signed, and help the band celebrate their record release this Sunday night at 8 p.m. Real Estate will be performing live at Other Music and autographing copies of Days, so come by, buy and wave bye-bye before they take off on their world tour.

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 16 @ 8:00 P.M.

Free admission | Limited Capacity

Their tour starts 10/20 in Germany.

He hasn't listed any acts yet, but Domino just announced that both Twin Sister and Deradoorian will be on the bill in addition to DJ sets from Animal Collective members Geologist & Deakin. Full lineup TBA.

It would seem like one of the bands they're not listing yet is Real Estate, who are signed to Domino, though Real Estate do need to be in Germany to start a tour just one day later, and they are playing a a free NYC show right before CMJ (their "only NYC performance" until November according to the invite)...

Real Estate will perform LIVE at the historic Astoria Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden.

Stroked

New album STROKED: A Tribute to Is This It, as the title hints, is a tribute to The Strokes' massively influential debut Is This It. The album was released for free on Stereogum today (7/26). They write:

Is This It was recorded in NYC at Transporterraum with Gordon Raphael. When it was finally released in the States in the Fall of 2001, a decade after Nevermind, it helped not only put contemporary New York City in the forefront of music lovers' minds, it offered an easy reference for people to dig backwards into the Big Apple's rock 'n' roll past. For certain younger fans, it was maybe the first time they carefully considered Television (the late '70s), the Velvet Underground (mid '60s to early '70s), and other lesser known garage and rock and whatever bands that inhabited a dirtier, grubbier Manhattan. The title's pure Richard Hell. The original sexy album cover a minimalist echo of New York Dolls (via Roxy Music). It's no coincidence that 2001 NYC -- eventually, especially Brooklyn -- ended up being known for its post-punk revival. (See, for instance, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Liars, Black Dice, Vice Records' No New York nodding collection Yes New York, etc.) Is This It was a history lesson, but one with enough new ideas to also offer a roadmap.
Chelsea Wolfe, Austra, Owen Pallet, The Morning Benders, Real Estate, Peter Bjorn & John and others offer their takes on album tracks as well. Full tracklist below.

Cities Aviv
Cities Aviv

Wise Blood contributed "Someday" to "Stroked". He and fellow weirdo rapper Cities Aviv share a bill on September 1 at Glasslands in Brooklyn. The show is one of many scheduled around the world for Wise Blood, but is Cities Aviv's only date we see scheduled at the moment. Tickets for the Brooklyn show are on sale now.

Wise Blood's tour includes another NYC show two days later. He plays a Jelly RockBeach show on September 3 with Pictureplane and others TBA. More dates are listed below.

Cities Aviv, the self-proclaimed "Post-Death" rapper, is also on the Glasslands bill with Wise Blood. The Memphis native released his debut full length Digital Lows on May 2. The album's production credits go to a number of virtually unknown producers, Muted Drone, RPLD GHOSTS, Danny Dee, Upgrayde, and Royal'T. The beats are dreamy, reverb-soaked headknockers that sound about as woozy as that album art (below) looks. Cities Aviv takes the beats, which on their own would make up a pretty solid chillwave album, and spits biting lines with a classic southern drawl. Fille Catatonique provides sung vocals which blend quite nicely with the album's vibes. The final track, "Float On," features Cities Aviv rapping over chillwaver Blackbird Blackbird's cover of the Modest Mouse song, that he recorded for 2010's Happy High EP. It's a fun way to end the album, and is far better than Lupe Fiasco's "The Show Must Go On," which sampled the Modest Mouse song earlier this year.

Cities Aviv isn't exactly the only rapper crossing into lo-fi/indie-approved territory lately, but he's certainly approaching the crossover from a unique angle. Digital Lows isn't nearly as blown out as, say, Shabazz Palaces, but he's still got way more experimentation going on than guys like Wiz Khalifa or Theophilus London. Grab the album for free at his bandcamp and check out some songs below.
