Ghost BC / The Three O'Clock / Thee Oh Sees fans

After two weekends, Coachella 2013 officially came to a close this past Sunday (4/21) with sets from Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Wu-Tang Clan, Grimes, Vampire Weekend, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jessie Ware, Tame Impala, and more. Pictures of those artists, and some of the comparatively smaller but not less exciting artists that we missed at Weekend 1, like Ghost B.C., The Three O'Clock, DIIV, and Thee Oh Sees, are in this post.
We didn't catch James Blake this time like we did the first time, but he brought out RZA (who was there with Wu-Tang Clan) to perform their song, "Take A Fall For Me," which appears on James' new album, Overgrown. You can watch a video of that below.
In case you haven't been keeping up with our coverage, pictures of Weekend 2 Day 1 are HERE and Weekend 2 Day 2 are HERE. For Weekend 1 pictures, check out day 1 (HERE and HERE), day 2 (HERE) and day 3 (HERE).

Wu-Tang Clan / Father John Misty / Grimes / the crowd @ Coachella, 4/14/2013

As the wind whipped through the final day of Coachella's first weekend, it became clear to those at the front of the stage that the techs getting the stage set up for the Red Hot Chili Peppers' festival-closing headlining set had a choice: take down the video screens that clearly were a part of the Peppers' production, or leave them up, risking them blowing uncontrollably around the stage. So they chose the former, leaving behind grandiose production elements in favor of solid -- but not-quite-revelatory -- musicianship. The first weekend of Coachella wrapped up last night (4/14). with sets from The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Dead Can Dance, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, and Staten Island hiphop legends the Wu-Tang Clan who performed much of their classic 1993 album, Enter The 36 Chambers, as well as solo hits from the different members. Earlier Sunday also saw Grimes' energetic set, noisemakers JEFF the Brotherhood and Dinosaur Jr, the mellow gold of Kurt Vile, Australian psych purveyors Tame Impala, crowd-pleasers Vampire Weekend, Gaslight Anthem, and Father John Misty. Pictures of those acts' sets are in this post. It's a sort of metaphor for this year's edition of the festival, which never quite hit the watercooler moment. On the final day of the first weekend (the lineup repeats next week), there were no superstar surprises, no Daft Punk appearance and, during the Chili Peppers' set, not even a new song: just a major band, playing through their major hits, for a major audience.
It's been the story of this Coachella from the start, when the two-weekend blowout nearly sold out before the lineup was even announced, but on the field it became immediately obvious: This festival, at least this year, no longer was about "music fans" but about "Coachella fans" -- that is to say, the tens of thousands of revelers who packed the field had no specific allegiance to a band, a genre or an affiliation. - [Hollywood Reporter]
Other acts that played Sunday: Cloud Nothings as a three-piece, Ghost BC (who played too early for our photographer to catch), Jessie Ware (who also made an appearance during Disclosure's set) and San Francisco psych-garage kings Thee Oh Sees, who we also missed but were joined on sleigh bells by fellow Bay Area resident Ty Segall.
Pictures from day 1 are HERE and HERE, pictures from day 2 are HERE. More day 3 Coachella pictures below...

Eugene Robinson (Oxbow) lists his "Top 10 Things in 2012 To Which I Will Say 'Don't Get Me Started'"
Eugene Robinson of Oxbow, September 2011 (more by Fred Pessaro // BBG)

Unlike most of the year-end lists we've seen, which are of albums, songs, or memorable moments from live shows, Eugene Robinson, frontman of long-running noise rockers Oxbow, always caps his year off with something way weirder (and awesome). Last year it was his Top Revenge Themes for 2011 and this year he's listed his Top 10 Things in 2012 To Which I Will Say "Don't Get Me Started." The list is just as amazing as you'd hope, and you can read the entire thing below.
Morrissey @ Terminal 5 10/13/2012

We've already published Amanda Hatfield and Fred Pessaro // BBG's favorite photos that they took in 2012 and here's the list from BV photographer Dana [distortion] Yavin. While she's still got a month worth of shooting to do, here's her current favorite photos from this year that she herself shot, #1 being Moz at Terminal 5. (And if you're in Miami for Art Basel, you can check out her photo show.) The rest of her picks are below.
wet fans watching the Shins (more by Dominick Mastrangelo)

If you actually will be there in person, you can also catch many of the bands at one of the many official late night shows (including the Shins)

Frank Ocean/Bloc Party at Lollapalooza - 8/4/12

Lollapalooza continued in Chicago's Grant Park yesterday (8/4) after beginning one day earlier (8/3). Day 2 gave us sets from Frank Ocean, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Bloc Party, Franz Ferdinand, tUnE-yArDs, The Tallest Man on Earth, Neon Indian, Chief Keef, Bear in Heaven, Washed Out, The Weeknd, and more. Unfortunately, during Neon Indian's set (which was cut short), the festival was shut down due to "dangerous weather," causing the tens of thousands of fans to flood the streets of Chicago in evacuation. But the fest reopened at 6 PM CST with an updated schedule. A number of performances were cancelled, including Alabama Shakes, B.O.B., Chairlift, and the Temper Trap, but others, like tUnE-yArDs, were rescheduled and took place at later times after the gates reopened.
If you aren't at the fest, have you been streaming it online? Today's stream begins at 1:30 CST.
Pics of day 1 are HERE. More pics of day 2 are below...

Das Racist / Battles... get a leg up

While Bonnaroo's roots come from the jamband scene, the festival's outlook has grown each year. The Red Hot Chili Peppers set provided a nod from the festival's past without losing the band's foothold in the present day. In various combinations, members Flea, Chad Smith and Josh Klinghoffer along with touring percussionist Mauro Refosco improvised their way before returning to the next number on the setlist... Earlier in the day, HR of Bad Brains looked and acted nowhere near the part of a hardcore hero. His bandmates kept the music's mix of powerful, fast numbers with an occasional reggae cooldown. The latter style was necessary after a dust cloud erupted from the crowd moshing and bodysurfing. A pleased Flea of the Chili Peppers watched from the side of the stage. -[Jambands]Bonnaroo 2012's third day (on June 9th) featured a trio of headline performances including Alice Cooper, Spectrum Road (which featured John Medeski, Jack Bruce, Vernon Reid and Cindy Blackman Santana), and a "Superjam" put on by Questlove of The Roots that featured Mr. Brown Sugar himself, D'Angelo, in his first US appearance in over ten years. The "Superjam" also featured appearances from members of The Time and Parliament-Funkadelic, who covered somgs by Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Hendrix and more across the 90 minute set. Setlist and video from that set is below.
More photos from Day 3, including Bad Brains, Das Racist, Battles, Santigold (who plays a free show in Chicago Thursday), Gary Clarke Jr., Mogwai (who performs in NYC twice this week), Red Hot Chili Peppers, Alice Cooper, Skrillex, Danzig Legacy (who went on an anti-photo tirade), GZA with Grupo Fantasma (who perform together in Brooklyn twice this week) and more are below. If you missed it, check out photos from Bonnaroo's first day HERE and second day HERE.

Lollapalooza (more by Grant MacAllister)

Chicago Sun Times reports:
Lollapalooza has revealed its official 2012 list of performers -- a typically wide-ranging smorgasbord of genres and styles topped by nearly a dozen mainstage headliners: the Red Hot Chili Peppers, freshly reunited bands Black Sabbath and At the Drive-In, the Black Keys, Jack White, Florence + The Machine, the Shins and Passion Pit, plus spotlighted electronic music including Swedish house titan Avicii, French dance duo Justice and DJ-producer Bassnectar.Check out the full list below...The annual music festival is scheduled for Aug. 3-5 in Chicago's Grant Park.
Rumored lineups have circulated widely, as they usually do, and Lollapalooza itself stoked the speculation in recent weeks via a series of CTA and online advertisements that seemed to hint at who would be playing.
The ads featured lyrics from such acts as Sigur Ros, Santigold, Jack White, Kimbra, Twin Shadow, the Weeknd, Bloc Party and more -- all bands that wound up on the bill.

If you think that the ascendance of Kreayshawn is a bit of enigma, you aren't alone. After posting a video for the now banned "Gucci Gucci" to Youtube (due to terms violation) on 5/18, within five days the video had logged 600k hits. Soon after, it started to get surreal:
Though she has only performed live six times and has one official mix tape out, she recently signed a $1 million contract with Columbia Records and is making famous friends quickly. "Snoop hit me up on Twitter," she explained. "He was like, 'Yo, DM [direct message] me. I really love your song.' So we met up, hung out and recorded a song with my sister, V-Nasty." Other fans include Diddy and, puzzlingly, MTV comedian Andy Milonakis...Kreayshawn and her creatively-named crew the White Girl Mob (DJ L1l D3bb and V-Nasty), may also be benefitting from their own liberal use of the n-bomb:A recent LA Weekly article described Kreayshawn's style: "If [Lady] Gaga is the coolly elegant Madonna from 'Vogue,' Kreayshawn is the gritty downtown Madonna with a girl posse from 'Borderline.' " -[The Daily]
OCWeekly: A lot of people have been criticizing your girl and White Girl Mob crew member Lil Debbie for her use of the N-word. How do you feel abut that word and the use of it in music?Regardless of the why, Kreayshawn is currently moving toward the interweb MC celebri-status of Lil B (who she knows and has shot videos for) . Though:Personally in my songs I don't use it at all. If I'm freestyling and I said it, that's just for that point in time. Any songs I'm writing I don't use it. But like I said in Oakland, Asian people will call Mexicans that. A Mexican will call a black dude that. A white person will call an Asian that. Everyone calls each other that. I feel like that word is used in the low income community more than anything. I can see if I was some rich crazy trick and I was just saying this because it's hip-hop. No, I was raised around this. Me and my sisters were all raised around this. People call me that. But personally I'm not flaunting it around. I don't say it in my music because of how, if I'm putting myself out there to the world there are going to be a lot of people who don't like it.
Lil B took time to speak to Billboard.com's The Juice on Kreayshawn and her success. "When you're an artist you get what you deserve," Lil B says. "I'm happy that she's working for her dreams and following the world I have created. She's definitely talented and we will see what's in store for the future. But it's all about Lil B and the Based God."Her upcoming projects include filming a video for Red Hot Chili Peppers, and taking her live performance count into the double digits with a few new US dates in major cities including a NYC show on August 18th at Highline Ballroom. Tickets are still available (the Lil B and Odd Future shows at the same venue sold out a bit quicker) (yes, she's associated with Odd Future too).
She'll also be back east in September to play Philadelphia's POPPPED Music Festival that the Shins, Girl Talk, Panda Bear, The Hold Steady, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Titus Andronicus, Cults, The Vaccines, Foster the People, Rakim and many others are also playing. Tickets are on sale.
All tour dates, and the infamous "Gucci Gucci" video are below. Snag another new song, "Rich Whores" at her website.

"As we got going, people started coming through to be on it." To Zach Condon?Anthony Kiedis: For some reason, this is the summer of bands getting married. I ran into that twice. I'm very keen on M.I.A., I think she's a rocking live performer. She wanted to play, she was very into it and it seemed like a great deal and suddenly she's getting married. Same with Hot Chip. They have a real groove; they write good songs and have an interesting personality. Except for the fact that they're getting married. Undone by matrimony, but not really undone. [Rolling Stone]

Butch Walker @ Maxwell's, Hoboken, NJ - Nov 23, 2007 (CRED)

Butch Walker and his family have fallen victim to the wildfires spread by the Santa Ana winds across Malibu, CA. On November 24th a family friend was forced to evacuate the singer, songwriter and producer's Malibu home, which was being rented from Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist Flea, due to the rapidly spreading fire. Walker was in New York City at the time on tour. Many pets have also been displaced by the wildfires which are now near full containment. Butch played sold-out shows at Maxwell's on the 23rd & 24th.Says Walker "I had just consolidated my entire recording studio and house from Atlanta into the one house In Malibu. I lost everything I've ever owned. Every master of every song I've ever recorded, every piece of recording equipment, guitars, drums and things I've collected over the years, cars, motorcycles, every family memorial, heirloom, picture, and document we ever had.... Gone. I feel like I finally know the difference between 'going back' and 'going home'."
Foo Fighters are playing Madison Square Garden on February 19, 2008. Tickets go on sale Friday at 10am ($49.50 / $43 / $29.50). Their new album Echoes Silence Patience & Grace is currently #49 on the list of best selling music at Amazon (Feist is 42). I haven't heard the whole thing, but I don't like the few songs I heard from it streaming on their MySpace.
Flea's Malibu home burned down. He's also suing Showtime. Flea is not a Foo Fighter, but his band has toured with them. All Foo Fighters tour dates below...

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band will play Nassau Colliseum in Uniondale, NY on March 10, 2008. Add that on to the other recently announced tour dates. Tickets go on sale January 19th @ 10am.
Red Hot Chili Peppers are suing Showtime which kind of makes sense since I always just assumed that Showtime must have paid them already to name their show "Californication". The Times of South Africa says that, like Bruce Springsteen's Magic, Californication was the Chili Peppers' big comeback album. Are they still back? I don't know.
Velvet Revolver were denied visas by Japan because "Japanese immigration officials appear to have taken exception to the backgrounds of various band members...." In related news, Scott Weiland is going to write a book just like Slash did. And speaking of Slash, he's holding a competition for guitar players.
