826NYC is a nonprofit tutoring center dedicated to helping students, ages 6-18, develop their writing skills in the realm of creative writing, expository writing and English as a Second Language. The 826NYC writing center provides free, daily, one-on-one tutoring sessions for students in need of after-school help. It also offers a free publishing resource to students, where volunteers are available to assist them in creating their own story collections, zines and other extracurricular student publications. In order for 826NYC to keep their vast array of programming free, they often throw insane comedy/music fundraisers in Brooklyn. 100% of the time the shows are more than worth the price of admission; but knowing your money is going to help childhood literacy makes dropping some coin on the event that much easier.

True to form, 826NYC has a fundraiser coming up on Wednesday July 10 at the Bell House featuring a pretty unbelievable line-up. The evening will be hosted by Sarah Vowell and Eugene Mirman and will feature sets by BV fave Reggie Watts, another BV fave Daniel Kitson(!), and more special guests (UPDATE: Mike Birbiglia and John Oliver added). If you haven't seen Daniel Kitson... my Cod... dude, he's the greatest. Quite simply, one of the most brilliant and talented comedians to come out of the UK ever. Not kidding. Tickets are a reasonable $40 and on sale NOW. Get em while they're hot, because this bad boy is going to sell right the F out.

Meanwhile Reggie Watts will perform at another benefit at the Bell House on Thursday (6/20) that's also with Wyatt Cenac, Todd Barry, Max Silvestri, Sara Schaefer and Crappy Cinema Council duo Jim Vanblaricum & Jim Crocamo. This one benefits New York City Coalition Against Hunger's Craig Murphey Fellowship Fund. Tickets are $15 and still available.

Bjork / Empire of the Sun @ Bonnaroo, 6/15/2013
Bonnaroo 2013, Day 3
Bonnaroo 2013, Day 3

There's no shortage of kooky costumed folk at Bonnaroo, but it's usually the antendees who are eccentrically attired. On Saturday (6/15), though, the main stage gave them a run for their money. Ever fashion forward, Bjork wore a headdress that either made her look like a dandelion or an extra from Hellraiser. (She wore it at the Hollywood Bowl too.) Australia's Empire of the Sun was a close runner up with their over-the-top headlining set that could've been from Flash Gordon. Mumford & Sons had to cancel (replaced by shoe-phobic folkie Jack Johnson), but Saturday also main stage sets from Billy Idol, R. Kelly, Nas, Cat Power, Matt & Kim, Portugal. The Man, The Lumineers and more. Pictures from those sets are in this post.

Elsewhere at Bonnaroo on Saturday, Mac DeMarco, JEFF the Brotherhood, Lord Huron and others on the smaller stages, a live episode of Scott Aukerman's Comedy Bang Bang, and in the Cinema Tent, Police Academy's sound effects wiz Michael Winslow (who played with Animal Collective the night before) did a one man show.

Pictures from Thursday are HERE and Friday are HERE, with Sunday still to come. More pictures from Saturday below...

Festival Supreme

I have got a WICKED soft-spot in my soul for the great Tenacious D. Back in the day when I was still a young pup exploring the world of comedy at large, a friend of mine gave me a VHS tape (recorded in EP mode) that featured David Cross' special The Pride is Back as well as every single episode of the HBO Tenacious D television series. I was familiar with Jack Black from other things, but this series blew my mind apart into about eighteen different piles of pinkish green sludge. To this day (and I have been and will continue to be raked over the coals for this analogy) I think Jack Black is a phenomenal singer who brings to mind someone like the great Mike Patton. Their zeal for the majesty of rock and the hilarious adventures he and the cherubic Kyle Gass got into made the series an instant fave of yours truly.

Over the years, The D has given us great music, great videos, great tours, and great laughs. But now, they are giving us the mother of all gifts: FESTIVAL SUPREME! Curated by (and featuring) Tenacious D, Festival Supreme is a one day comedy/music fest taking place on the Santa Monica Pier in California on Saturday October 19, 2013. This rain-or-shine, nearly seven-hour event features a line-up that is so incredible that I had to read it like 7 times. Attendees will thrill to the comedy and music of Tim and Eric, The Mr. Show Experience(!), The Mighty Boosh, Sarah Silverman, Zach Galifianakis, Adam Sandler, The Gregory Brothers (aka the Autotune the News guys), Tig Notaro, Hannibal Buress, Eric Idle, Fred Armisen, Princess (Maya Rudolph and Gretchen Lieberum), Will Forte, Demetri Martin, Dynasty Handbag, Reggie Watts, Beardyman, Craig Robinson and the Nasty Delicious, Garfunkel & Oates, Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, Neil Hamburger Band, The Abe Lincoln Story, Nancy and Beth (Megan Mullally and Stephanie Hunt), and, of-fuckin-course, Tenacious D. I've included the list below for those of you who see things better visually as a list.

Pre-sale tickets will be available on Wednesday, June 12 at 10 AM PST (password is SUPREME). Tickets will go on sale to the general public at 10am PST on Friday, June 14 at 10 AM PST. General admission tickets are $99 (plus fees), and VIP tickets are $250 (plus fees). VIP tickets include a VIP viewing platform of the main stage, VIP bar, access to golden toilets and special merchandise. Also, sorry kiddos, this is a 21+ event. HA! Grow up.

Preview video and line-up in list form is below.

Sarah Silverman at The Apollo in 2008 (more by Chris La Putt)
Sarah Silverman

Sarah Silverman has teamed up with Michael Cera, Tim Heidecker, Eric Warehaim, and Reggie Watts for a new YouTube comedy channel, JASH. Rolling Stone reports:

"We each have pages within JASH and we each can curate those pages," Silverman said. "This is what we think is funny. It may not be your cup of tea, but there's no testing involved, there's no second-guessing of what a 14-year-old boy would like. It's just a place to do stuff and fail or not fail."

The new channel, which officially launched yesterday at SXSW Interactive, is still a work in progress, though the creators say Silverman is working on a "French film-noir trailer," Cera has a 25-minute short film on the way and Wareheim . . . well, he's busy, too.

You can watch the introduction video below, which includes the head of Google saying he commissioned the five comedians to destroy all existing YouTube videos and start over, interviews with each member, and finally, a new song written just for JASH.

Sarah Silverman will be in the NYC area to perform at Wellmont Theatre on April 26. Tickets for that show go on sale Friday (3/15) at noon.

Video below...

As we've said before, Reggie Watts is a busy beaver and and true performer who'll loves to get on stages big or small. Tonight NYC has two chances to catch him.  First he'll be performing at The Blind Barber on E. 10th St. at 7:30 as part of an event titled "An Evening of Original Sin" that is a fundraiser for Genesis, a new aerial play by Julia Kaminsky. Also performing is onetime Das Racist cohort Lakutis. More info on the show is here.

Then, Reggie will hop on the L Train (or take a cab) to head to Cameo's weekly free comedy show, "Big Terrific." It's host Max Silvestri's 30th birthday tonight and he's also got Hannibal Buress and Greg Johnson on board for the celebration. Big Terrific starts at 8 PM and is FREE.

Reggie Watts

As mentioned before, Reggie Watts really loves to perform and will do so just about anywhere if he's got the time. He's headlined Webster Hall and yet still plays shows like the one he did at Glasslands over the weekend (1/13), a night that also featured bands Baby Alpaca and Shining Mirrors. Pictures from that show are in this post as is a video of Reggie performing.

Brooklyn has another chance to catch Watts do his thing tonight (1/15) at Union Pool as part of the monthly variety show The Moon that he has performed at before. Tonight's show is The Moon's fifth season premiere and also features Marina Franklin, Rob Cantrell, Chris Rozzi and musical guest The People vs. Larsen. $5 at the door and the show starts at 8 PM.

More pictures and that video from Glasslands below...

I get the feeling Reggie Watts just loves performing and will play anywhere. He's headlined Webster Hall but will show up at Cameo and do a whole set too. He's got a few tour dates this month including an NYC show at Glasslands on 1/13 with with Shining Mirrors and Baby Alpaca. Tickets for that show are on sale now.

Later in the month, he'll be hosting a "Reggidency" at SF Sketchfest from Jan. 27 - 29, which includes an evening where his unique musical skills will be paired with dancer/choreographer Amy O'Neal; one that's a collaborative effort with Grammy-nominated Robert Glasper; and, perhaps, most excitingly, a "Sound Effects Summit" with Michael Winslow (of the Police Academy films). That would be something to witness.

All Reggie Watts tour dates are listed below...

Foxygen @ BVCMJ 2012 (more by Dominick Mastrangelo)

Crafty social commerce site Etsy has a holiday pop-up shop at 113 Greene St. in SoHo that runs through Saturday (12/8). In addition to selling various wares there are also free craft demonstrations and musical performances. Tonight (12/5) at 8:30 the musical guest is listed as "Secret Performer" but we have it on good authority that it's Foxygen (for whom we just premiered a video, and open up for Of Montreal at Webster Hall next week).

Other musical performances this week include Izzy & the Catastrophics today at 4 PM; Eric Harvey of Spoon performs on Thursday night (12/8); Gem Club play Friday afternoon (12/7, 4 PM); and Reggie Watts (who is one of the holiday shop's curators) will perform Saturday (12/8) at 7 PM. Again, all shows are free and open to the public (but subject to capacity, obviously). The full list of the Etsy Holiday Shop's musical performance schedule is below, and you can see the entire list of upcoming events here.

Teebs and The Mast were supposed to play Glasslands tonight (11/2), but that show, we just realized, was cancelled last month and instead Glasslands will host Cultfever and Kenji Urada (not Blonds, as originally listed) tonight and a late night Hurricane Sandy benefit with DJ sets from Bear In Heaven and Small Black.

Intead, Teebs and The Mast will play NYC on Saturday (11/3) with comedian/musician Reggie Watts, Hara Katsiki, Francine Leclercq, Jason Peters, and Laetitia Soulier. The show is for the launch of See | Me, "a website, mobile app, and exhibition space." Sign up HERE to request an invite to the event, which takes place at the See | Me (formerly Artists Wanted) event space (25-25 44th Drive). Let us know if the RSVP works out, and if you hear anything about this show being cancelled (note: we confirmed it was still happening before posting).

Teebs was also supposed to play Moogfest in Asheville, NC last week with Prefuse 73, but he had to cancel last minute due to troubles with American Airlines. As you may already know, the fest did otherwise go on as planned and you can check out our pictures from it HERE.

A list of all Teebs dates and song stream below...

Reggie Watts on Late Night last night (video below)

As a longtime fan of the great Mike Birbiglia, I always do my best to spread the word whenever I hear of an upcoming NYC Birbigs happening. The other day someone forwarded me a Ticketweb link to a show happening at the Highline Ballroom on Sunday December 2nd called 'Inside Jokes': a benefit for NYWC's Justice Writing Program featuring Mike Birbiglia. "Sweet. Article time," thought I. So I go to get started on a quick write-up for BV, head over to the ticketweb link and, KABOOMsky... no more Birbiglia. Turns out, he is no longer on the bill but other Klaus favorites Janeane Garafolo, Dave Hill, Eugene Mirman ARE on the bill as are Special Guests. Could Birbiglia be a special guest? One wonders. Either way, it's a great line-up regardless, and the charity NYWC is more than worth some of your time and money.

NYWC stands for New York Writers Coalition (not New York Water Closets, as I initially ass-umed).

NYWC creates opportunities for formerly voiceless members of society to be heard through the art of writing. We provide free, unique and powerful creative writing workshops throughout New York City for people from groups that have been historically deprived of voice in our society, including at-risk and disconnected youth, the homeless and formerly homeless, the incarcerated and formerly incarcerated, war veterans, people with disabilities, cancer and major illness, immigrants, seniors and others.
Your man Klaus is a big proponent of literacy and of allowing the voices of the "historically deprived" to be heard, one way or another. Standard GA and VIP tickets are currently onsale, and there a field for an optional "access code" (anyone know what it is?). Great show for a great cause. Get on it!

Meanwhile, you can catch Janeane Garafolo (and Reggie Watts and others) on 11/1 at Todd Barry's 25th Anniversary in Comedy show at the Bell House, if you have a ticket because it's now sold out. Tickets are still available however for the Tell Your Friends! The Halloween Spooktacular with Gilbert Gottfried, Myq Kaplan, Liam McEneaney, Rena Zager, and more at the Bell House on 10/30.

Tickets go on sale at noon today for the live Jon Stewart/Stephen Colbert show happening in NJ.

Louis CK, who recently released a live Tig Notaro album, hosts SNL soon and is meanwhile in the midst of his NYC run of live shows.

Speaking of Reggie Watts, he was on Conan last night. Watch below...

Reggie Watts at loft show 10/7/2012

Reggie Watts made a surprise appearance at a tiny loft show in Williamsburg on Sunday (10/7) bringing a dose of his particular anarchic genius to an otherwise gentle evening of acoustic music from Lady Lamb the BeeKeeper (who played our BV SXSW 2011 showcase), Brandon Terzic (Oud) & Matt Kilmer, Gelsey Bell, Xylos, and cellist Brent Arnold with Alexandra Duvekot.

Like Andrew WK, Watts also spent part of last weekend playing music through the electrified body of David Blaine (who seemed to enjoy it.) There's video of that below, along with more pictures from the loft party.

Continue reading "we stopped by this loft party, and so did (secret guest) Reggie Watts, who also played David Blaine's #Electrified (pics) "

Sarah Silverman @ the EMCF recently (more by David Andrako)
Sarah Silverman

In addition to her upcoming appearances at the New Yorker Festival and roasting Anthony Bourdain, not to mention the zillion shows she seems to be adding lately, Sarah Silverman has scheduled ANOTHER NYC show, but this one is much sooner. Silverman and Webster Hall headliner Reggie Watts will team up for a surprise show at The Bell House in Brooklyn TOMORROW (Monday, 9/24). Tickets are on sale (grab em before they sell out like the October 8th 826NYC benefit with almost the same lineup very quickly did).

Janelle Monáe / TV on the Radio / Pharrell at Afro-Punk Fest 8/26/2012
AfroPunk 2012
AfroPunk 2012
AfroPunk 2012

Slamming together categories -- and, when appropriate, bodies -- is the ever-expanding mission of the annual Afro-Punk Festival, which returned last weekend to Commodore Barry Park in Fort Greene, Brooklyn.

It was an event summed up in action by one of its returning headliners, Janelle Monáe. She's an indefatigable song-and-dance bandleader who gleefully draws on African-American showmen like Michael Jackson, Jimi Hendrix, James Brown and even Cab Calloway as her lyrics dip into science fiction. Her finale, "Come Alive (War of the Roses)," had a jitterbug-ready beat while Ms. Monáe crowd-surfed like a punk-rocker: off the stage, into the audience and back onstage for a few more snappy steps. - [NY Times]

Day 2 (8/26) of the 2012 Afro-Punk Fest was an incredibly stacked line-up, with TV on the Radio, Janelle Monáe (who was introduced by Pharrell Williams), Reggie Watts and Toro Y Moi just to name a few. Pictures from Sunday are in this post. Pictures of Day 1 (8/25) are here and here.

Quicksand at MHOW 8/25/2012

Quicksand completed their pair of NYC dates with a Saturday night show at Music Hall of Williamsburg (8/25), joined by Bowery Ballroom opener Italian Horn and special surprise guest Reggie Watts. The show, which sold-out almost instantaneously, reportedly saw the band much more relaxed as they tore through the identical set from the Bowery show (pictures/review) with an addition of the instrumental track "Baphomet" from their classic Slip. Setlist is below.

In a conversation with Walter Schreifels following the Music Hall show, he indicated that Quicksand were open to future dates depending on scheduling. But more importantly, he and the band enjoyed themselves and that the currently scheduled dates are far from the end of the road. Fingers crossed.

Until more dates surface, your last shot to catch Quicksand goes down at FYF in Los Angeles this weekend.

Pictures and video from MHoW are below.

Rain Machine at BAM in 2010 (more by Vincent Cornelli)
Rain Machine

As mentioned, the free Afropunk Festival returns to Brooklyn's Commodore Barry Park on August 25-26. You can check out the full schedule for the fest at the bottom of this post. On the Saturday (8/25), the Green Stage will be headlined by Erykah Badu and the Red Stage by Das Racist. On the Sunday (8/26), the Green Stage will be headlined by TV on the Radio following sets by Toro y Moi and Reggie Watts and the Red Stage will be headlined by Janelle Monae.

Speaking of TV on the Radio, Kyp Malone's solo project Rain Machine has a NYC show coming up, that will take place soon after Afropunk at Union Pool on September 1 with Soft Location and Slowdance. No other Rain Machine dates to report at the moment.

Sinkane, who also plays Afropunk Fest, continues his residency at Zebulon tonight (8/20).

Outside Lands 2012 - Day 1 in Photos
Outside Lands 2012 - Day 1 in Photos

Who needs to travel to Southern California for Coachella or to Texas for Austin City Limits? Certainly not music fans living in the Bay Area.

They can just stay right at home and enjoy the increasingly popular Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. That is, if they can get a ticket. This year's gathering of the musical tribes, which runs through Sunday, completely sold out in advance -- 65,000 tickets snatched up for each of the three days.

That's quite an accomplishment for the still-young event, which, in its fifth year, has certainly become one of the nation's premiere music festivals.
This success story is no mystery. Berkeley-based concert promoter Another Planet Entertainment always lines up terrific acts for the festival -- and that's certainly the case in 2012.

The large-scale production, which features six performance stages as well as great food and drink offerings (mostly from local providers), kicked off in triumphant fashion on Friday with sets by hometown hero Neil Young (with Crazy Horse), the Foo Fighters, Beck, Of Monsters and Men, Die Antwoord and many other talents. - [Oakland Tribune]

San Francisco's Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival kicked off Friday night (8/10) with sets from Beck, The Foo Fighters, Andrew Bird, Reggie Watts, Two Gallants, Futurebirds, Washed Out and more. More pictures from Day 1 are below.

TV on the Radio

As mentioned, the free Afro-Punk Festival is returning to Brooklyn's Commodore Barry Park on August 25-26. Since then, the lineup has been expanded, and now joining the initial announcement of Erykah Badu, Janelle Monae, Toro y Moi, Das Racist, Reggie Watts, and more is TV on the Radio (who will be headlining), Sinkane, Alice Smith, Flatbush Zombies, Radkey, Joe Jordan Experiment (JJX), and Purple Ferdinand.. Plus, the following DJs have been added: The Supasonics, Grits and Biscuits, DJ Pete Smoke Les, Stack-Aly, Roofeeo and VENUS X GHE20GOTH1K.

There will also be a Bites & Beats Food Truck Festival, an Afro-Punk Spinthrift Market, a motorcycle show, and a Nike Battle For the Streets Skate Competition, hosted by Alex Corporan and Billy Rohan. More details on these are below.

The updated lineup, flier and an Afro-Punk exclusive film, I Am Other, are below.

Continue reading "Afro-Punk Festival expands lineup (TV on the Radio, Sinkane, Alice Smith, food trucks, art vendors, bike show & more)"

The 2012 Afro-Punk Festival is returning to Brooklyn's Commodore Barry Park on August 25-26 at Commodore Berry Park in Brooklyn. The initial line-up includes Erykah Badu, Gym Class Heroes, Janelle Monae, Das Racist, Skindred, Toro Y Moi, Reggie Watts, Spank Rock, Ninjasonik, The Memorials, Bad Rabbits, Gordon Voidwell, The London Souls, Cerebral Ballzy, Phony People, and Body Language, with more to be announced. The Afropunk Festival is free and open to the public.

Additionally, the fest, now in its eighth year, will also feature "the largest street skate and BMX competition in NYC will return this year with the nation's top amateur skaters and BMX riders in a competition to be judged by top professionals in both sports." Last year's Afro-Punk Fest was cancelled due to Hurricane Irene. Let's hope for better weather this year.

Reggie Watts @ @ the Vic last week (more by Ben Rodig)
Reggie Watts

Reggie Watts, who played the Vic in Chicago last week and is now on a tour that hits Austin for two shows this weekend, recently played a sold out show at Webster Hall in NYC and was just announced on the lineup of the upcoming multi-venue CBGB Festival in NYC. Well, Reggie's venue has been revealed and it is The Bell House in Brooklyn on July 6th with a reunited Radio 4 and The Jigglers. if you don't want to mess with a CBGB Fest badge, tickets are on sale.

A list of all Reggie Watts tour dates, and the new Hot Chip video that he stars in, below...

Continue reading "Reggie Watts touring, playing NYC show w/ reformed Radio 4 "

Now we really know what's going on. The CBGB Festival is happening July 5 - 8 at some 30 venues across the city, with over 300 bands participating, including the previously mentioned free Guided by Voices, Pains of Being Pure at Heart, and Cloud Nothings show at Summerstage (which now also includes The War on Drugs), the The Baseball Project and Craig Finn at City Winery, L.A. Guns at Highline, the Cro Mags, Sick of it All, Vision of Disorder, Absolution, and Sal Naim show at Webster Hall, and D Generation's Bowery Electric show. Newly added artists include Rocket from the Tombs, MEN, PS I Love You, Reggie Watts, Gary Lucas, Weekend, and more TBA. The full list of currently confirmed artists is below.

It's also a film festival with both new and classic rock films/docs, including the world premiere of The Rise and Fall of The Clash, plus American Hardcore, Color Me Obsessed: A Film About The Replacements, The Dead Boys - Live at CBGB/OMFUG 1977, I Am Trying to Break Your Heart, Kurt Cobain About a Son, The Sacred Triangle: Bowie, Iggy & Lou 1971-1973 and more.

In addition, they've added a CMJ/SXSW-like music industry conference with panels/workshops concerning the music industry, independent artists, and a CBGB "Tales from the Club" panel each day. All conferences take place at the Sunshine Cinema and East Village Cinema. The festival also closes with the "distilled spirits fest" at Beekman Beer Garden on July 8.

There are variety of badges available too, from music and film showcase badges to one that get you into everything (or potentially at least...badges don't guarantee admission). The press release we got claims badges have been on sale since May 7 but this is the first we've heard about it. Regardless, early bird prices on music showcase badges is $69 and runs through May 31. It jumps to $79 if you buy before July 4 and walk-up badges once the fest starts are $89. Film fest badges are $99/$159/$219 for earlybird/regular/walk-up. You can also get a music conference badge which gains you entry to the showcases, workshops, and panels, and a music/film combo badge which gains you entry to all of that plus the film screenings. Full details on the vast array of CBGB Festival badge options are at their website. What this means to people who already bought tickets to individual shows already but want a badge too, we're not sure.

A list of all confirmed bands, films, conferences, and participating venues is below.

Rahzel & Kenny Muhammad @ BAM
Shuffle Culture

The Questlove-curated "Shuffle Culture" debuted at the BAM Howard Gilman Opera House last night (4/19). As promised, a rotating cast of performers including Deerhoof, the Metropolis Ensemble, DJ Jeremy Ellis, D.D. Jackson and Sasha Grey (not to be confused with Gray) graced the stage at different times, performing in 5 to 10 minute bursts before transitioning into the next act. I had little idea what to expect going in and I think the show benefits from the blind approach (aka don't click below if you're going tonight).

The two-show run concludes tonight with Willis Earl Beal and Gray (not to be confused with Grey) replacing Reggie Watts. Both should fit well into the atmosphere of the gig. Tickets are still on sale.

More about the show and pictures are below...
