Mastodon at Roseland Ballroom in 2012 (more by Rebecca Reed)
Mastodon

Georgia sludge bashers Mastodon have announced that they'll follow 2011's hard rock-oriented The Hunter with their sixth full length at some point this year. It's being produced by Nick Raskulinecz, who also did the upcoming Hold Steady LP, and has worked with Ghost, Foo Fighters, and others. Release date and title still TBA, but stay tuned.

They're also going on a US tour this spring, and they've got some pretty great support coming from French death metal greats Gojira and Norwegian rock 'n' roll devils Kvelertak. The tour hits NYC on May 15 at Terminal 5. Tickets for that show are not on sale yet, but you can check Ticketmaster for updates.

The tour also brings all three bands to Columbus, OH's Rock on the Range festival (5/16 - 5/18), which also includes Guns N Roses, Motorhead, Slayer, Wolfmother, Suicidal Tendencies, Down, Exodus and lots of bands that may steer you away from going like Avenged Sevenfold, Kid Rock, Stained, Seether, Chevelle, Fuel and more.

Full Rock on the Range lineup, along with the list of Mastodon's tour dates, below...

The Cure / Matt & Kim & a colorful fan
Voodoo
Voodoo
Voodoo

Like they did at ACL and Osheaga and Lollapalooza, The Cure co-headlined Voodoo Fest this year. To be more specific, they helped helped close out the final day of the 2013 New Orleans 'Experience' on Sunday night....

"Smith opened with the tight rockers "Shake Dog Shake" and "Fascination Street," and took the crowd through a winding tour of the band's catalog, playing breathless, ecstatic classics such as "Just Like Heaven," "Friday I'm In Love," "Lovesong" and "Pictures of You," as well as deeper cuts. Notably, he also delivered a red-letter day for the Cure-fan timeline: Sunday night, apparently, was the first time the band performed "Burn," popularized by the 1994 film (and icon of goth culture) "The Crow."" [NOLA.com]
Matt & Kim, Dr. John, Bassnectar, Kid Rock and others also played on Sunday which was also the final day of 'Soundwave' this 2013 festival season. Compared to other festivals we went to this summer, Voodoo was definitely a bit light on the number of bands we're fans of, but it's still a great time.

Like SPIN and sometimes Pure Volume and sometimes Hype Machine, BrooklynVegan was responsible for two hours of entertainment a day inside the Toyota Soundwave tent at each festival it appeared. We did at Firefly, at Lollapalooza, at Outside Lands, at Bumbershoot, and finally at Voodoo Day 1, Voodoo Day 2 and Voodoo Day 3 where we closed out the BrooklynVegan portion with a special set by the Jingle Punks Hipster Orchestra who also played 90 minutes earlier on the Carnival Stage. Rusty Lazer, instead of DJing with Big Freedia in Brooklyn, closed out SPIN's Soundwave portion with a multiple hour DJ set.

Pictures from the day are in this post and continue below....

"Voodoo festival-goers came from far and wide to see some of the best talent music has to offer.

Big names like Kid Rock and legendary rock group Nine Inch Nails brought Tyler Livings to the event.

"It is my first time out here. I have heard a lot of good things about it and seemed like a good event to go to with a lot of good music. I wanted to see what it was all about," he said.

One curveball, some hoped to get one-day passes, but that option sold out on Halloween, leaving the more expensive weekend pass as the only option.
It wasn't a dealer breaker for some, just an inconvenience." [WWLTV]

Nine Inch Nails, who recently announced they're appearing on ACL TV and who visited Barclays Center in Brooklyn earlier on the tour, were the big headliners of the the second day of Voodoo Fest 2013. Pearl Jam played the night before, and The Cure close things out on Sunday.

Other sets on Saturday included Cults, Reignwolf, The Gaslight Anthem, Alkaline Trio, Paramore and rapper F. Stokes who also stopped by the Soundwave tent to play a set for us right after Cults did the same. Pictures from the whole day are in this post. More below...

The second weekend of Austin's 2013 ACL Festival went down this past Friday (10/11) and Saturday (10/12) (Sunday was cancelled) with the second day giving us sets from The Cure, Passion Pit, Kendrick Lamar, Shouting Matches (Justin Vernon's blues band), Wilco, Grimes, Junip, Haim, Autre Ne Veut, Parquet Courts and more. Pictures of those artists (except none of Kendrick), and others from weekend 2 day 2 are in this post.

ACL Music Festival 2013 - Day 2 - 10/5/2013

Opening with a sluggish "Plainsong," the band - led, as always, by founder Robert Smith - scanned tentative, with a chunky and worn-looking Smith seeming particularly unhappy. Yet the Cure founder emoted the follow-up "Pictures of You," and by the time the band hit "Lullaby," the entire group was more animated. Momentum established, the Cure could do no wrong.

Loosely dividing the concert into thirds, the band spent the first part on hits both massive and missed, from the jangly "High" and moody "Lovesong" to the funky "The Walk" and brooding "Fascination Street." A buoyant "Just Like Heaven" indicated the band isn't burned out on its biggest hit yet. [Austin Chronicle]

Austin's 2013 ACL Festival kicked off on Friday (10/4), its first day of two consecutive weekends, and continued on Saturday (10/5). Day 2 gave us sets from The Cure, Kendrick Lamar, Wilco, Passion Pit, Haim and more. Pictures from the second day of the fest are in this post, and there's another set at BV Austin.

The festival's first weekend wraps up today (10/6) with sets from Atoms for Peace, The National, Phoenix, and more. Then it all happens again next week (10/11-10/13). If you haven't been keeping up with our coverage, check out pics of day 1 here and more here.

Pixies
Pixies

The Kim Deal-less Pixies began their four-night run in NYC on Tuesday (9/17) at Bowery Ballroom, and they continued at the same venue Wednesday night (9/18). Wednesday's show was heavier on the Surfer Rosa and Doolittle material than the first night, and it included three songs from Bossanova, unlike night one which included none. Like the first night, Reignwolf opened. Pictures of that show, plus videos of the Pixies playing "Velouria" and "Here Comes Your Man," and their setlist, are in this post.

The run continued at Music Hall of Williamsburg last night (9/19) with Meg Myers opening. You can check out a video, a picture of the setlist, and the flyer for that show below.

The final of the four shows is tonight (9/20) at Bowery Ballroom with Parquet Courts (who headline MHOW soon after). The poster for tonight's show is also below. Sold out.

Lollapalooza Day 2 - 8/3/2013
Lollapalooza Day 2 - 8/3/2013

When last seen, at the Pitchfork Music Festival in Union Park last year, Kendrick Lamar was still a relative unknown except to hip-hop connoisseurs. His set came off as hazy and introspective, with a curious Lady Gaga hanging on every word from the wings. But now he emerges with newfound swagger -- even without Gaga in the house -- smoke machines at his feet and a full band at his back. His 2012 album, "good kid, m.A.A.d. city," puts a new and brilliantly introspective take on West Coast gangsta rap, a look at its tropes and pressures from the inside out. So even as he leads the crowd in some explicit choruses, he throws out questions and lays out his conflicts in the verses. "This will be on the Internet," he announces. Ya think? The audience cheers him like a rock star, even when he stands on stage with arms folded. But he doesn't just bask in the glow. He tries to put it in context, much in the way his rhymes try to make sense of hip-hop and the culture that birthed it. "You can't classify what we got going on," he says to the fans. "This is life." [Chicago Tribune]
Lollapalooza 2013 continued yesterday (8/3) in Chicago's Grant Park, with nicer weather than day 1, and sets from eight stages worth of artists, including The Postal Service, Kendrick Lamar, Haim, Foals, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Local Natives and more. Pictures of those (and other) artists are in this post, and we've got a second set of Saturday pics HERE on the way with more artists. But not any of Death Grips.

We at BrooklynVegan are also at the festival, hosting a portion of the Soundwave Tent.

The festival wraps up today (8/4) (check out our Sunday preview) with sets from Cat Power, Phoenix, The Cure, Beach House, Grizzly Bear, Alt-J, Baroness, Angel Haze, and more. If you're not at the festival, you can stream it live at Lollapalooza.com.

Pixies at Wellmont Theatre in 2011 (more by Dana (distortion) Yavin)
Pixies

The Kim Deal-less Pixies announced the European leg of a world tour earlier this month, so it was only a matter of time before North American dates were announced. First, they were announced for Chicago's totally killer Riot Fest (with Replacements, Dinosaur Jr., Rancid, Blondie, Violent Femmes, Bad Religion, Rocket From the Crypt, etc), and now four small NYC shows have been announced!

The NYC shows happen on September 17, 18, and 20 at Bowery Ballroom and September 19 at Music Hall of Williamsburg. Brooklyn's great indie rockers Parquet Courts open the 9/20 show, Reignwolf (who recently opened for Dinosaur Jr.) open the 9/17 and 9/18 shows, and Meg Myers opens the 9/19 show. Tickets for night 1, night 2, night 3, and night 4 are on Band Presale now (password: "bagboy") and they go on sale to the general public on Saturday (7/27) at 10 AM.

Taking Kim Deal's place on this tour is another indie rock Kim, Kim Shattuck of The Muffs, who play their first of two NYC-area shows tonight (7/25).

Pixies also just released a second music video for their new song, "Bagboy," because "who says you can't have two videos for a song?" Check out the new video (via Rolling Stone), along with the list of all tour dates, below.

Dinosaur Jr. @ Irving Plaza 6/7/2013
Dinosaur Jr

After a thoroughly rained-on and mud-soaked Friday, Governor's Ball headed to Irving Plaza for an after party with Dinosaur Jr. and Reignwolf. "WE ARE THE KINGS OF LEON," proclaimed Lou Barlow, "AND THIS IS SEX ON FIRE," apparently tickled that the platinum-selling band had to move their Governor's Ball performance to Saturday because of the inclement weather. Dinosaur Jr., who took the stage at Irving around 1:15 AM, tore through a 17-song set at their usual preposterous volume.

The band, approaching the thirtieth anniversary of their formation, still rocks--harder than most. Legendary guitarist (and possible wizard) J. Mascis has had a busy few days. The band played two sets on Friday, one in the rain, and on Saturday, one of Mascis' other bands, Heavy Blanket, played a free afternoon Summer Thunder show at Union Pool that BV presented and got shut down after 15 minutes for being too damn loud.

Hopefully, Dinosaur Jr. will be coming around again soon. They've already played both Bug (1988) and You're Living All Over Me (1987) in their entirety. I'm holding out for a tour on Green Mind. Until then, more pictures from Irving Plaza, including one of Dinosaur Jr's setlist, are below.

Governors Ball

Thanks to the storm that hit us on Friday (6/7), day 1 of Governors Ball got off to a pretty messy start. It wasn't so bad at first, and early sets from Polica and Dinosaur Jr. (who had a bunch of fans there in J.Mascis-style grey wigs) were still enjoyable despite the weather, but later in the day, the rain severely picked up and Feist's set was shut down after one song. Other artists, like Beach House, were cut off early too, and some, like Pretty Lights and Kings of Leon (who ended up playing Saturday instead), had to cancel completely. Still, before then there was much to enjoy, and the Skyy Vodka Tent made for a great place to take shelter and dry off. Plus huge afternoon dance parties from Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs and Crystal Castles didn't hurt either.

Stay tuned for our continued coverage of Governors Ball, and follow BrooklynVegan on twitter and instagram for live updates (as much as cell phone service permits at least, it gets pretty rough around mid-day). More pictures of day 1 below...

Sasquatch Festival 2012 - Day 2
Sasquatch Festival 2012 - Day 2

Experiencing live music at The Gorge is a powerful and emotional experience. It may seem unlikely, however, that The Gorge has the power to break even the most emotionally strong person down to tears. When Bon Iver performed "Skinny Love" on Sunday night, tears were not a rare sight. In fact, they were pretty common. Sasquatch! fosters an environment that will change the way you listen to music. Your favorite songs will never sound the same. New songs will become life-changing memories. [Oregon Daily Emerald]
