The Blow @ MHOW, November 2013 (more by Amanda Hatfield)
While not as unexpected as My Bloody Valentine or Mazzy Star, The Blow released their first new full-length in seven years, which NPR's Bob Boilen just named his #1 album of 2013. One of the songs off The Blow, ""You're My Light," just got a remix by Vampire Weekend's Rostam Batmanglij and you can stream that below.
Meanwhile, singer Khaela Maricich just gave us her Top 10 of 2013. Most of it is music related, but there are art and TV choices in there too, and she provides commentary as well. You can check out that list below.
In other news, The Blow wrapped up their tour not too long ago and are already looking towards the next record:
We are in the west, taking a bit of a break. Soon, we will be even farther west, as far as one can go, and recording a new album. We won't stay west forever, the east will pull us back, we will just be here long enough to pretend that we are living in the seventies with a sailboat and a hammock and a lot of good parties in the hills.Let's hope we don't have to wait seven years for the next one.
Check out Khaela's Top 10 list and that remix below...

Grimes at ACL 2013 (more by Tim Griffin)
Whether it's to criticize her or praise her, it's hard to deny that people like talking about Grimes' musical opinions. Her top 10 albums of 2012 list included the most pop (Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber) AND the least pop (Swans), and she totally meant it too. She's defended Beyonce, Mariah Carey, and pop music in general, and denied accusations of trolling when her Boiler Room set included Taylor Swift, Maria Carey, Ramones, Skrillex, and others.
Grimes has now published a list to her tumblr of her favorite songs of all time. It continues her trend of pulling from pop and experimental music with songs from Burial, Mariah Carey, Joanna Newsom, Beyonce, Mazzy Star, Skrillex, Animal Collective, Butthole Surfers, Paramore and more. It's not only newer stuff though, she's also got Patsy Cline, Prince, and Enya, among others.
Check out her whole list (subject to change), via Exclaim, below...
A Harlem woman claims in a lawsuit that she got herpes at a Rihanna concert in Brooklyn from lipstick the singer endorsed. The alleged incident went down May 7 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn (the 2nd of two shows Rihanna played there and the one that was rescheduled).
Starkeema Greenidge, 28, alleges she contracted the virus when a representative of MAC Cosmetics applied a used tube of RiRi Woo to her smackers.
"I wasn't able to work for two weeks. It cost me a lot of money," Greenidge, a waitress, told the Daily News on Wednesday.
She said she slapped MAC with the suit in Manhattan Supreme Court in hopes of forcing the company to be more sanitary in the future. Greenidge also said the company should train its employees to use disposable tubes or swabs to apply the lipstick. [Daily News]
A$AP Rocky at FFF Fest 2012 (more by Tim Griffin)
As mentioned, Rihanna is on a tour with A$AP Rocky which was set to hit NYC this weekend on May 4 and 5 at Barclays Center. The May 5 show is still on, but the May 4 show has been rescheduled to May 7 due to Game 7 of the Brooklyn Nets-Chicago Bulls NBA Playoffs series. Barclays center CEO Brett Yormark stated, "We are looking forward to a special concert and I hope Rihanna will be our guest at Game 7."
Tickets for the May 4 show will be honored on May 7, and refunds will be available at the original point of purchase. Both shows are currently sold out.
As just mentioned, A$AP Rocky has been announced (along with Kendrick Lamar, Miguel, Wu-Tang, and others) for this year's Hot 97 Summer Jam at MetLife Stadium on June 2 (tickets). He also plays more NYC-area dates in August on his tour with Wiz Khalifa, Joey Bada$$, Rockie Fresh, Smoke DZA and others.
Updated dates are listed below...
A$AP Rocky at Public Assembly in February (more by Dylan Johnson)
As mentioned, the Jay-Z curated Budweiser Made In America festival is returning to Philly from August 31 - September 1 at Benjamin Franklin Parkway with a lineup of Beyonce, Queens of the Stone Age, Nine Inch Nails, Black Hippy (aka Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q, Ab-Soul, and Jay Rock), Miguel, Solange, Phoenix, A$AP Rocky, The Gaslight Anthem, AlunaGeorge, Public Enemy, and more. Tickets for the festival are on Facebook Presale now. Password is "AMERICA."
Meanwhile, A$AP Rocky, who plays that festival, is on a tour with Rihanna now which hits the NYC area on April 28 at Prudential Center (tickets) and May 4 and 5 at Barclays Center (sold out). As mentioned, he was supposed to stop in NYC for his own late show at Highline Ballroom after the Prudential Center show, but his Highline show has been cancelled. No word yet on how to obtain refunds if you've purchased tickets.
UPDATE: A$AP Rocky & Rihanna's show in Houston tonight is also cancelled, though that is probably a coincidence.
Updated A$AP Rocky dates are listed, along with the Made In America flyer, below...

Jay-Z's bid for a festival, known as Made in America, will return to Philadelphia in 2013, setting aside August 31- September 1 at Benjamin Franklin Parkway for the second edition. Check out a teaser trailer below, and line-up is forthcoming.
In other Jigga news, the man who REALLY started from the bottom (sorry, Drake- lol) has moved his Roc Nation venture away from Columbia Records and back to Universal:
News comes today from Jay & Roc Nation themselves that they've decided on Universal Music Group as their parent label, departing from multi-year deals that had Roc Nation records, including the most successful release from the company thus far, J. Cole's 2011 debut Cole World: The Sideline Story, releasing on Columbia Records.... Roc Nation's next release, which appears to be J. Cole's oft-delayed, but highly-anticipated sophomore effort Born Sinner, will be released on Roc Nation/Universal Music Group. -[The Source]Roc Nation currently houses J. Cole, Jay Electronica and others, while managing such names as Rihanna, Meek Mill, Wale, Timbaland, and No I.D.

Chris Brown, clearly a fan of The Exploited
As you can see above, Municipal Waste reacts to the "fashionable punk jacket" worn by R&B vocalist Chris Brown which, as Tony from Municipal Waste points out, is eerily similar to one worn by ex-girlfriend Rihanna on the back cover of her brand new album, Unapologetic, which was released today (11/20).
Its definitely jacket weather out there, so it wouldnt be too farfetched to expect Rihanna to wear hers to Webster Hall tonight (11/20), a last minute promo show for her record release today that is also the close of her "777" tour. Her tour with A$AP Rocky is in 2013 and hits two nights at the Barclays Center.
Check out the back of Chris's jacket below...
This letter, signed by a ton of artists and pictured above, is set to appear in an ad in Billboard:
We are big fans of Pandora. That's why we helped give the company a discount on rates for the past decade.Pink Floyd, Down, Primus, Dead Kennedys (with our without Jello?), Nas, Alabama, Sheryl Crow and many more big major label names signed this (or someone signed it on their behalf). Check out the full list below, and head to fairpayforartists.com for more information on their point of view..
Pandora is now enjoying phenomenal success as a Wall Street company. Skyrocketing growth in revenues and users. We celebrate that. At the same time, the music community is just now beginning to gain its footing in the new digital world.
Pandora's principal asset is the music.
Why is the company asking Congress once again to step in and gut the royalties that thousands of musicians rely upon? That's not fair, and that's not how partners work together.
Congress has many pressing issues to consider, but this is not one of them. Let's work this out as partners and continue to bring fans the great musical experience they rightly expect.
The issue is that Pandora is supporting the Internet Radio Fairness Act which they say will "help end the long-standing discrimination against internet radio". Artists are mad because that possibly means less money for them, but Pandora and other Internet radio providers argue they can't stay in business the way things are now.

A$AP Rocky @ Fun Fun Fun Fest - 11/03/2012
If A$AP Rocky has anything going for him besides a few internet rap hits and some memorable moments dropping in on his friends' shows, it's that he's already got some pretty far out stories to tell. He recently revealed an interview with Hard Knock TV that he smoked weed with Daft Punk on his tour bus (hopefully in Colorado). Now he just needs to get them to play at his house!
He also declared himself a factor in evolving society's views on homosexuality. "I kicked down the door for kids that's my age, older and younger, to be able to wear Jeremy Scott sneakers, rips in their jeans and not feel gay," Rocky says. Because of him, kids can wear whatever they want and not have to worry about being mistaken for being gay. Yeah, that doesn't sound homophobic at all (it's a start though) (watch the whole thing in the video below - he means well).
In 2013, he'll be able to add another epic story to his resumé, when he heads out on tour with Rihanna. That tour comes to NYC for the previously discussed show at Barclays Center on May 4, which is sold out, and also hits the same venue one day later (5/5), which tickets are on sale for now. Hopefully Rocky will have his new album, LongLiveA$AP, out by then which he has kept delaying. He's now hoping to get it out during the first quarter of 2013.
As mentioned, you can also catch A$AP Mob with A-Trak at Best Buy Theater on November 29 and A$AP Twelvy at Highline Ballroom on November 22.
A$AP Rocky also just played Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin this past weekend (as did Run DMC). You can check out more pictures from his set (like the one above), the video of that Hard Knock TV interview, and a list of all upcoming tour dates, below....

Drake at Jones Beach - 6/16/12 (via Draii Rynell)
Drake brought his tour with J. Cole, 2 Chainz, Waka Flocka, Meek Mill and French Montana to the NYC area last week for shows at PNC Bank Arts Center (6/12) and Jones Beach (6/16) (and Saratoga, NY show in between - hope you didn't try to get in with your fake ID). The openers on that tour were all in the NYC area earlier this month for Summer Jam, where Drake's Young Money labelmate Nicki Minaj cancelled her headlining performance.
In between the PNC Bank Arts Center and Jones Beach shows, Drake stopped by NYC club W.i.P. at Greenhouse on Wednesday (6/13), where he allegedly got in a fight with Chris Brown over Rihanna, who both singers/rappers have dated. TMZ reports that bottles were thrown, at least 5 people were injured, and the club was left severely damaged. When the NYPD arrived, Chris and Drake had both already left the scene. You may have noticed cover stories the other day on papers like the NY Post. New "victims" are still coming forward (ready to sue).
Meek Mill, who was on tour with Drake, was there too and spoke to XXL about the incident. He said, "Things just happen in the club. I seen girls in there throwing bottles, all types of shit. All types of people. I never seen Chris Brown or Drake throw a bottle and I was there." And when asked if he himself threw a bottle, he responded, "Fuck no."
Game was not there for the fight, but he has collaborated with both Drake and Chris Brown on his 2011 album, The R.E.D. Album, and commented on the fight in an interview with BET:
"That's not a cool beef. They both can stop it now and go about they way, go they separate ways and get they money," he said, adding "If them niggas is rappers, I'm encouraging that shit. But if one of those niggas is an R&B nigga, then y'all need to cut that out. We need some songs to fuck to."NY Post reports that Drake's reps are insisting he did nothing wrong and Drake is refusing to speak to the NYPD. Wall Street Journal also now reports that the club has been shut down by the police.
Meanwhile, at Drake's Jones Beach show on Saturday (6/16), he brought out a number of guests including a Dipset reunion, The Weeknd, A$AP Rocky, Busta Rhymes, and more. Regarding the Dipset reunion, FADER writes, "The evening's biggest surprise was a four-song Dipset reunion, with Jim Jones, Juelz Santana and Cam'ron emerging one track at a time to join forces on "' Really Mean It' and 'Salute.'" Check out videos of Drake and his guests below.
While on the subject of venues, might as well catch up and post this...
Madison Square Garden, the world's most famous arena, is going dark for the summer -- and top acts like Sade, Britney Spears and Taylor Swift are having to perform on the outskirts of the Big Apple as the renowned venue prepares for a long-term makeover.Joe's Pub is also currently closed for renovations, as is Sidewalk Cafe. That Rihanna Cee Lo show is at Nassau Coliseum tonight (7/19) and the Izod Center Thursday.
MSG will spend the next three summers reconstructing its arena. That's good news for New Jersey venues like the Prudential Center and IZOD Center, which are experiencing an increase in high-profile performers as a result. Even Long Island's Nassau Coliseum is getting a small boost.
"MSG is the busiest arena and has been the busiest arena that I've seen in the States ... and anytime you take out that supply, especially if you have an increase in demand, it's going benefit the Prudential Center, and certainly we expect that to be the case," said Jeff Vanderbeek, who owns the Prudential Center in Newark.
It's a busy summer for top musical acts: Backstreet Boys and New Kids on the Block are on the road together, the cast of "American Idol" and "Glee" are performing live and hitmakers like Katy Perry and Rihanna -- accompanied by Cee Lo Green -- have tours. [AP]
To quote Gothamist:
Following the Arcade Fire's win at the Grammys, it seemed like half the nation was asking: Who Is Arcade Fire? What started off as a post on BrooklynVegan, grew into its own Tumblr account, and by last night the band themselves caught wind of the meme. At the Brit Awards--while accepting one of their awards (they took home trophies for Best International Album and Best International Group)--Win Butler said, "We're called Arcade Fire--check it out on Google."Full Brit winner list (Bieber and Mumford & Sons included) and some videos below...
And the nominees for "Album of the Year" are:
* The Suburbs by Arcade FireCrazy.
* Recovery by Eminem
* Need You Now by Lady Antebellum
* The Fame Monster by Lady Gaga
* Teenage Dream by Katy Perry
Also funny: Mumford & Sons are up for Best New Artist against Justin Bieber (and Drake, Florence & The Machine, and Esperanza Spalding)
Robyn is up for Best Dance Recording against Lady Gaga (and Goldfrapp, La Roux, and Rihanna).
Arcade Fire are also nominated for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals against Muse, Kings of Leon, The Black Keys, and... Jeff Beck & Joss Stone.
The Black Keys also landed in the "Best Rock Instrumental Performance" along with... Dave Matthews.
The Black Keys and Mumford & Sons and Kings of Leon and Muse are also all in the "Best Rock Song" category.
"Best Alternative Album" category:
* The Suburbs by Arcade FireSo they give that to Arcade Fire, since Lady Gaga will probably get Album of the Year, or maybe Arcade Fire will just get screwed and they'll give it to someone on a major.
* Infinite Arms by Band Of Horses
* Brothers by The Black Keys
* Broken Bells by Broken Bells
* Contra by Vampire Weekend
Other names that got nominated: Cee-Lo, Janelle Monae, Big Boi, John Legend & The Roots, Jay-Z, Darcy James Argue's Secret Society, Flight of the Conchords, Devendra Banhart (for "Best Recording Package"), Oh No Ono (ditto), Anais Mitchell (ditto), Danger Mouse, Gorillaz, and Carol Burnett. Full list at the Grammys site.
Kanye West at The Box last night
Kanye West popped into the 200 capacity club The Box on the LES last night for a 1:30 AM surprise set:
An e-mail went out to a select group late Thursday evening, alerting recipients that West and John Legend would be holding a function. If not quite a black-tie affair, the invite asked guests to be suited and booted. No exceptions. Also noted in the message was a phone number to call to learn the address of the venue, which was Manhattan's Chrystie Street club, the Box. The stage set-up was pretty simple: a baby grand piano at which Legend sat, two microphones (one just for Auto-Tune), an 808 beat machine and a keyboard. -[MTV]The fully-suited Mr. West crooned through favorites like "Homecoming", "Flashing Lights", "Heard 'Em Say", "Love Lockdown", "Power," "Good Life", and "Can't Tell Me Nothing" and even ventured into new territory like "Moma's Boyfriend", an unheard Billy-Joel's-"Moving Out"-sampling track viewable in the video below. Besides John Legend, who contributed with his hit "Ordinary People", Estelle was in the house (and joined him for a rendition of "American Boy") as well as A-Trak, Consequence, and his "latest signing to G.O.O.D. Music" Pusha T (of Clipse).

Kanye @ SXSW 2009 (more by Faith-Ann Young)
Critics may have hated it, but Monday's premiere of "The Jay Leno Show" got a warm reception from viewers. That widespread scorn even reached President Obama who was taped calling Kanye West a jackass.
Thanks in part to a newsworthy appearance from rapper Kanye West -- who drew widespread scorn for his behavior during the MTV Video Music Awards the previous night -- the former "Tonight Show" host's 10 p.m. comedy-variety show drew a surprisingly large crowd of 18.4 million total viewers, according to data from Nielsen Media Research. That's more than three times what he averaged on "The Tonight Show."
Among the key demographic of viewers aged 18 to 49, "Leno" scored a 5.3 rating/14 share, easily the night's top-rated program. It was NBC's most-watched program in the time period since last year's Summer Olympics. [LA Times]
Meanwhile, as Kanye promised a few weeks ago, he's going out on tour with Lady Gaga who was also a big star at the VMAs. The'Fame Kills' tour runs from November into January 2010, and includes two (for now?) NYC-area shows: December 22 at the Izod Center and January 3 at Nassau Coliseum. Ticket info TBA. All tour dates, and videos from the Leno show, are below...

TMZ can confirm that Chris Brown just entered an LAPD station, where he turned himself in to police.Radiohead did show up the Grammys, as did an even MORE pregnant M.I.A.. Robert Plant and Alison Krauss took best album (for an album that came out on indie label Rounder Records). Video of Radiohead and M.I.A.'s performances, and a list of all winners (including Daft Punk) below...
Chris is being investigated by the LAPD for an alleged domestic violence felony battery that occurred early this morning near Hancock Park in L.A. Police officials said earlier today they may arrest Brown when they found him. Well, now they know where he is.
According to the female victim -- who cops refuse to identify -- she and Chris got into an argument which turned violent. Cops say when they arrived to the scene, Brown had split, but the woman had "visible injuries and identified Brown as her attacker."
Brown and his girlfriend Rihanna were together earlier last night, attending Clive Davis' pre-Grammy party -- and both canceled their scheduled performances at tonight's event.
Brown is currently being interviewed by detectives. [TMZ]
