"Break Dance", Coney Island, Brooklyn, NY (bok bok)
I have been totally slacking on the going out front. Luckily this week there is plenty of really exciting dancing to be done (both when I'm here and when I'm going to be away - more on that later). On to this week:
You probably heard that starting today NYC will have four waterfalls to look at
(through October 13th).
The waterfalls were designed by Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson. I probably read that the first time I heard about the waterfalls, but it wasn't until re-reading that fact today that I recognized his name as the guy who currently has 'thirty-eight works installed at both MoMA and P.S.1' ("Take Your Time") and whose exhibition party Sigur Ros recently played.
BONUS: you can see all four waterfalls while seeing a concert on any of this summer's Rocks Off Cruises (that start/run before 10pm which is when the waterfalls turn off) .

Japanther @ Europa, Brooklyn, NY - May 7, 2008 (Vito Fun)
Video (not the best sound, but you can see that people were moving) from the Europa show below...
If you've never been on one, you definitely go at least once if you have the cash. Some people complain about the poor sitelines and high prices (drinks especially), but I think the overall experience makes it worth it, especially if it's one of your favorite bands. The views of the skyline and Statue of Liberty are great. It looks like THIS and THIS and THIS.

"Reunion Tour is the title of the fourth studio album by The Weakerthans, scheduled for release on September 25th, 2007 in the USA and a day earlier in Canada." [Wikipedia]
As I started to say the other day, the view from the Rocks Off boat cruises is great - you're really sailing on a boat around Manhattan. The Temptress - the larger of the two concert boats - sails from 41 St and West Side, and goes down all the way to the Statue of Liberty. The cruises are about 3-hours long. The band usually plays for about half that time. The rest of the time (or the whole time if you want to) you can be outside or looking out a window, or drinking (expensive drinks), or whatever.
As a big fan of the Weakerthans, I thought the Weakerthans show was super-duper. The set list was full of all the old hits and a bunch of new stuff off the new album (see above). I have a terrible memory when it comes to song names, set lists - even album titles...so I would love to list out all the songs, and especially name the one that I love and everyone sang along to at the end of the three-turned-four-song encore, but I'm too dumb, so.... The above MP3 is off the brand new Bad Brains album "Build a Nation" out June 26, 2007 on Megaforce, and produced by Adam Yauch of the Beastie Boys ("It also represents the first studio album, outside Beastie Boys albums, to be recorded at the Beastie Boys’ Oscilloscope Laboratories and Studio compound in New York City.") You can listen to the whole new Bad Brains album at MySpace. You can listen to the whole new Beastie Boys album on BrooklynVegan.
Bad Brains are playing The School of Rock Festival in Asbury Park, NJ today (June 24). Tomorrow is their sold out NYC concert cruise aboard The Temptress. I rode the Temptress just this past Friday for the also-sold-out Weakerthans show which also the first show of the Rocks Off season. Not only were the Weakerthans great - so was the weather and the view. Here are two pictures I took off the side of the boat:
More, and larger, photos @ my Flickr.
Do you want to see Bad Brains on the boat on Monday (June 25), but don't have tickets? Now you have one more chance. I have one pair of tickets to give away, and I'm going to split that pair in half - so instead of one prize, I now have two. To win one of these two tickets Email BVCONTESTS@HOTMAIL.COM (subject: Bad Brains), and let me know your favorite album of 2007 so far. Include your first and last name for guestlist. Two winners will be picked at random, and contacted. Contest ends Monday at noon - seven hours before the voyage starts boarding.
BB tour dates & stuff below....
Back when the Rocks Off "School of Rock" festival in NJ was announced, I definitely wondered if, and hoped that, the Weakerthans would play their own NYC show as well. The Bad Brains are doing it - also for Rocks Off - on a boat (now sold out). Ends up - so are the Weakerthans, and it's this Friday June 22nd (NOT SOLD OUT).
