Ron Reyes and Greg Ginn at Grand Victory in 2013 (more by PSquared)
Black Flag

As discussed, Black Flag's Greg Ginn is being accused of child abuse by his ex-wife Marina, who filed an affidavit in October which expressed that their 7 and 10 year old daughters don't feel safe around their father. It accused Greg of abusing alcohol and drugs in front of them, engaging in physical violence with others in front of them, telling his daughters "you're hot" and whistling at them, telling them that they are fat and denying them food, and other abusive behaviors.

Now it has come to our attention, via an associate of Marina, that Greg's former Black Flag bandmate Ron Reyes appeared in court the other day to detail what he experienced regarding Ginn's children, their home life and what he saw at Black Flag rehearsals. We were sent Ron's statement as a notarized affidavit which you can read in full as a PDF HERE. It is also excerpted below.

We reached out to Ron to let him know we received this. He was surprised, but did confirm it is real, and gave us this additional statement...

STATEMENT FROM RON REYES (to BrooklynVegan)

When you hear things that trouble your heart, especially the heart of a parent... well lets just say that it is hard to stay silent and wash your hands and somehow walk away hoping to remain safe and unaffected. I am very troubled by what I have heard over the last couple months. And all I can hope for is that somehow things will work out in favour of two very precious children so they can live a life that is safe and full of love, support and guidance they deserve. Whenever a woman speaks out about abuse people want to second guess her and cast shame and doubt over her claims. This infuriates me to no end as I have two daughters and a wife of 27 years that I love to death. It is just not right to immediately doubt and somehow pour shame onto a woman for speaking out based on gender. I have no love of lawyers and do not look forward to the backlash I will receive for lending a voice of support to those who have reached out to me. But called i have been and I just can't ignore that. People please consider the source of all accusations carefully and pray for an outcome of peace and love and safety for children who cannot speak for themselves in court.
Peace
Ron Reyes

Ron Reyes w/ Black Flag in 2013 (more by PSquared)
Ron Reyes

Today in Black Flag: Following vocalist Ron Reyes being fired, bassist Dave Klein quitting, and the band apologizing for "falling short in 2013" and replacing Ron with Mike Vallely on vocals, Ron has recently made more comments on the whole thing. A recent article on Beatroute reads:

"When I found out about Flag, one of the first things I said to Greg was, 'We must take the high road on this. Do not disrespect those guys in public. They have the public's support. People LOVE Keith Morris, people LOVE Chuck Dukowski, people LOVE Bill Stevenson. If we come against those guys we are going to look like bitter old men. Greg said, 'Fuck it. I am bitter.' He did it and it completely backfired. I didn't even know about Greg's lawsuit until the day it went public. Mike V told me. Once the lawsuit came out (August 2013) we were the Evil Flag. There was the Good Flag and the Evil Flag...it was really hard. When I started I was on good terms with those guys. All of a sudden they stopped responding to my emails. Relationships were severed and I was guilty by association.""

Until Greg Ginn allegedly threatened Ron Reyes' family, Reyes was committed to the band. He says he deserves an Academy Award for what he had to put up with in 2013. He admits Mike V was right when he told Rolling Stone "Ron became combative and argumentative," emphasizing, "That did happen only after Greg threatened my family." The reasons for the alleged threat are not known.

On November 24, 2013 Ron Reyes was fired from Black Flag after working in collaboration with Greg Ginn for one year. He had an album contract, but nothing for the tour or partnership in the band. He now admits without the paperwork, he doesn't have a leg to stand on for the money he is owed from the tour. He has made amends with his FLAG friends and is back at work with local band PIGGY.

Black Flag

The Black Flag saga continues: After playing some sold out shows, and digitally releasing an album, vocalist Ron Reyes has left the band. In a note on Facebook, he writes:

The writing was on the wall since before we played our first show. So many things went wrong from the start. I was into things like having a good drummer, rehearsing and spending time on things like beginnings and endings of songs, being a little less distracted with tour life and a little more on the ball. You know things that would make our efforts worthy of the name Black Flag... Yes it is my opinion that we fell very short indeed and the diminishing ticket sales and crowds are a testament to that. However It was made clear to me that raising these issues was tantamount to a blasphemous stab in the back to Greg. How could I question him, his efforts and hard work? How could I dare be a fan of OFF! And or be friends and a fan of Flag? I was told that I had to chose sides. But I refuse to treat someone like an infallible Pope figure. No guitarist deserves such unquestioning blind devotion.
You can read Ron's full note below.

In case you're not caught up, Black Flag "reunited" with main songwriter/guitarist Greg Ginn and Jealous Again vocalist Ron Reyes. Then, a second Black Flag reunited as FLAG which included Nervous Breakdown vocalist Keith Morris, Chuck Dukowski, Bill Stevenson, and others. Black Flag toured. FLAG did too. Then Black Flag sued FLAG, but lost. Black Flag showed us their new album artwork. They called it What The... We wondered the same thing. Then they let us hear the whole record (though it's still not technically out until 12/13). And now just like that, Black Flag are without a vocalist again.

It was fun while it lasted, right?

Meanwhile, the other Black Flag band, FLAG (aka Keith Morris, Chuck Dukowski, Dez Cadena, Bill Stevenson, and Stephen Egerton) just played Punk Rock Bowling in Las Vegas and also have upcoming dates, including a NYC show on September 19 at Irving Plaza. Tickets for that show are still available.

Black Flag

The impossible has happened. Black Flag will reunite with their second vocalist Ron Reyes (Keith Morris was the first) for a show at Hevy Fest in the UK, roping in Greg Ginn as part of the lineup. The show will be the first official Black Flag show in many years, and the first outside of the US in more than 30.

UPDATE:Neither Chuck Dukowski nor Robo are part of this lineup. Enter FLAG.

So far the remainder of the Hevy Fest lineup, which goes down on August 2-4 at Port Lympne Wild Animal Park in Kent, has yet to be announced. Expect an additional 80 bands to round out the lineup.

Head below for some Black Flag videos featuring Ron on vocals, including a video from Ron Reyes's 50th birthday party, where he joined Greg Ginn on stage for Black Flag covers.
