As always, there's a ton of metal and hardcore stuff happening in the NYC area. Here's a roundup of some of the latest.
As we get ready for the annual giant Decibel tour that this year features Abbath, High On Fire, Tribulation and Skeletonwitch, we recently found out that, following the sad departure of longtime Skeletonwitch frontman Chance Garnette, the new vocalist on this tour and beyond will be Adam Clemans of the great Wolvhammer. As we wait to see whether he can fill those shoes, here are some recently-announced shows you might be interested in.
'80s dudes Anvil are touring a ton in in 2016, including a show in NYC at Black Bear on May 14 and in Long Branch, NJ at Brighton Bar on May 13. Tickets for Black Bear are on sale now, while you can get the NJ tickets at the door.
Local punks Crazy Spirit and Warthog have a show coming up at Palisades on March 12 with Sadist, Savageheads, Mommy, Nandas, Murderer and Spitehouse. Tickets are on sale now.
Also at Palisades, hardcore band La Misma will be playing with Sadist, Green Beret, Pure Disgust and Blood Pressure on April 15, and tickets for that are on sale now. La Misma are also opening for Framtid when they play the Acheron on March 25.
LA powerviolence legends Despise You are playing a NYC show right before they hit Maryland Deathfest. They'll be playing a show at Saint Vitus on May 26 with Yacoepsae, Sanitys Dawn, Whoresnation, Six Brew Bantha and Backslider. Tickets for that are on sale now.
Over at the Acheron on March 14, you'll have a chance to see the killer double-bill of LA blackened thrashers Witchaven and like-minded Dallas rippers Steel-Bearing Hand. Tickets for that are on sale now.
You can always do well to scope out what's going on with our metal experts over at Invisible Oranges. Like this week they've plumbed the depths of bandcamp to find some great stuff that you probably have never heard of. And they reviewed the excellent new Ghostlimb album, which you can stream below.
Now on to some reminders. Since we last spoke, much has been announced, like Black Dahlia Murder, Nails, Magic Circle/Ecstatic Vision, Krieg, Lamb of God/Corrosion of Conformity/Clutch, Graves at Sea, and Royal Thunder.
There's also five Killswitch Engage shows, Amon Amarth/Entombed A.D., The Sword/Purson, Dylan Carlson, Weekend Nachos, Kvelertak/Torche/Wild Throne, Grim Reaper, Magrudergrind/Mutilation Rites, Cauldron, Tau Cross, Unearth/Ringworm, Dragged Into Sunlight/Primitive Man/Cult Leader/Churchburn, UXO/Primitive Weapons, Behemoth/Myrkur, Ghost, Cannabis Corpse and Pig Destroyer/Dropdead/Full of Hell.
Not to mention Dysrhthmia/Artificial Brain, Poison Idea/Child Bite/Iron Reagan AND Poison Idea/Child Bite/Sheer Terror, Rivers of Nihil Krallice/Sabbath Assembly/Gnaw, Coffins/Noisem/Ilsa, Bell Witch/Wrekmeister Harmonies, Black Tusk, Taake, Young and In the Way, Vattnet Viskar, and Bongzilla/Black Cobra.
Thought there wasn't more? Think again. Abbath/High on Fire/Skeletonwitch/Tribulation, Abigail Williams/Fleshgod Apocalypse, Melvins/Napalm Death/Melt Banana, Cannibal Corpse/Obituary/Cryptopsy, Megadeth/Suicidal Tendencies, Black Sabbath, Slayer/Testament/Carcass, AC/DC, and Iron Maiden.
That about does it. Check out music from Steel-Bearing Hand, Witchaven, Warthog, Rotten Sound, Ghostlimb, and tour dates for Anvil, below...

When Nasum were active, they were at the forefront of Swedish grindcore. They took the best from their peers in Sweden's fertile death metal and punk/dbeat scenes and viewed it through the lens of grindcore. As the new millennium approached, the work they began in 1992 was beginning to pay off, releasing acclaimed records Shift, Helvete, and (personal favorite) Human 2.0. The band came to an end, tragically, when vocalist/guitarist Mieszko Talarczyk was killed in Thailand from the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami that also devastated Indonesia, India, and Sri Lanka. His death brought the disaster home for Nasum and their fans, as the group had lost the man largely behind the group's furious assault.
It was all but assumed Nasum would never return in any incarnation when the band broke up for good in May 2005, three months after Talarczyk's body was identified. They never gave their fans a proper goodbye, so they're doing just that starting later this month with a limited amount of live dates, including this Thursday's show (5/24) at Europa, and appearances at Maryland Deathfest and Chaos in Tejas later this month. Rotten Sound's Keijo Niinimaa will step in on vocals. Even though Talarczyk is irreplaceable, this may be the only time that some fans get to see the band in any form.
In anticipation of their upcoming BV-sponsored trek, I spoke with drummer Anders Jakobson, who also had tenures on guitar and bass in the band, on the details behind the reunion and Nasum's legacy. That conversation is below.
Nasum's final farewell lineup
wow. From a press release:
"You thought NASUM was dead? We are. This is not resurrection. It's farewell, for good."No word on any specific dates, but we'll keep you informed.
"If things were different, if Mieszko hadn't died, NASUM would have celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2012. Therefore, after long deliberation and scrutiny, we have decided that it's now or never: We will do a handful of shows around the world in 2012 - to celebrate our anniversary, say a final goodbye to the fans and Mieszko. No cheesy reunion, no new albums, no epitaph for Mieszko. We will play only a few places in a limited number of disruptive, unruly concerts. It will be a total blast, and we aim to go out hard. Just you wait.
...In the years that passed, the feeling that everything had been left unfinished lingered with the rest of us. Suddenly seven years had passed, and we realized it was time for closure; for us, the band and for the fans. With our anniversary coming up it felt like a perfect time to end the band the way it was supposed to - exploding in a ferocious, blasting frenzy, not wither away at the mercy of tragedy. And finally we are ready, able, and totally fucking charged, so expect something over the top.
To handle vocal duties on the upcoming shows we have asked Keijo Niinimaa, vocalist in grind favorites Rotten Sound, to join us. They were always close friends of ours, and while Keijo's plagued screams won't replace Mieszko, they will add a certain viciousness to the shows. On a few occasions, we might ask a few other close friends of the band to do some vocal sessions. Who? Wait and see! If you ever wanted to see NASUM blast shit to bits, this is your last and only chance."
Vocalist/guitarist and co-founder Mieszko Talarczyk died in the December 2004 tsunami disaster that followed the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake. Members went on to focus on projects like Regurgitate, Coldworker, Victims, and Sayyadina.
With all of the love floating around for the new Trap Them LP (totally warranted), I'm a bit puzzled that their future European tour mates Rotten Sound hasn't rattled as many cages. Rotten Sound's Cycles was a burner, and similarly the band's new LP Cursed pulls from grimy Swedish death metal and combines it with Nasum's grind annihilation. Cursed is due on Relapse Records on March 15th and features "Hollow" and "Self" (both in video form below), as well as "Plan" which you can download above (for the first time) and stream below. Preorder a copy, it rules. Rotten Sound recently played Gramercy Theater and will hit the road of Europe with Trap Them/Gaza in early April.
One grind band that is getting its fair share of attention is Florida's Maruta, whose new LP Forward Into Regression is currently streaming in full at MetalSucks (you can also grab three of those songs for download above). Preorder that LP via Willowtip.
In other news, Holy Grail will team up with Cauldron for a North American tour that will include May 4th at Union Pool. All tour dates are below. Holy Grail released their latest LP Crisis in Utopia via Prosthetic this past fall.
Malignancy will team up with Humanity Falls, Andromorphus Rexalia, Respawn The Ancients, Ambient Death and Legionary to play Manhattan's Bowery Electric on 3/20. Humanity Falls is also scheduled to take on Party Xpo in Brooklyn on 3/26 with Backslider.
After a successful show supporting Eyehategod, Misery Index will return to NYC to support the tongue-wagging NYDM team Suffocation. Look for the pair plus more TBA at Santos Party House on May 15th. Tickets are on sale.

The oh-so-Brutal Truth
Pummeling, fist-pumping, extreme grindcore was the order of the day at Europa in Brooklyn on Sunday (5/17). It was day two of the Auditory Assault Festival, and the godfathers of modern grind, Brutal Truth, met up with the mighty Misery Index, Rotten Sound (who released one of my fave records of 2008), Crowpath (them too), Total Fucking Destruction (with Richard Hoak of BT), Pigsty, Jig-ai, Sulaco, and others. Many bands on the AAF roster were making their first pit stop towards their eventual destination, Maryland Death Fest, which goes down this weekend in Baltimore with Bolt Thrower, Mayhem, Pestilence, Napalm Death, and about 50 of their closest friends.
The cavalcade of NYC shows surrounding MDF continues as Antigama / Complete Failure impacts Europa TONIGHT (5/20), Mayhem / Marduk / Cephalic Carnage /
Cattle Decapitation Lair Of The Minotaur / Withered hit Irving TOMORROW (5/21, tickets here), Wolves In The Throne Room hit Europa on FRIDAY (5/22, tickets here) and then again on TUESDAY (5/26, tickets), Trap Them at Lit Lounge on MONDAY (5/25), and last, but certainly not least, Unearthly Trance / The Endless Blockade / Magrudergrind at The Charleston on 5/28.
Brutal Truth will be back in Brooklyn on July 31st with Pig Destroyer and Repulsion, who are playing ALL of the influential Horrified, as part of The Blackened Music Series at Brooklyn Masonic Temple. Tickets are now on sale.

Welcome to this week in Metal! This week we'll start with the pedal to the floor with Harpoon of Chicago, who will release their new LP Double Gnarly / Triple Suicide on Interloper Records. Featuring members of 7000 Dying Rats, the band recorded the LP in August 2008 with Andy Nelson (Weekend Nachos), sending it off to metal-mastering go-to Scott Hull (Pig Destroyer, Agoraphobic Nosebleed) for the finishing touches. The trio takes advantage of the drum machine gun to create a relentless grind assault reminiscent of Plague Bringer, Agoraphobic Nosebleed, or Genghis Tron (sans keys). Check out "Frogs, Boils, Locusts..." available for download above, and cop it on limited LP (400 in black, 100 in white & blue marbled vinyl) when it drops on Feb 10th! Harpoon recently added bassist DJ Baracca (ex-Lair of The Minotaur) to their ranks and have added a few live dates in and around the Chi (dates below).
Absu have announced a new self-titled album, posting the ripping new track "Girra's Temple" to their myspace. Due on Feb 24th on Candlelight Records, the band have also lined up a few dates including SXSW on Mar 20th at Spiros and at... you guessed it... Maryland Deathfest. Meanwhile, Absu is garnering alot of media attention lately... check out features in Metal Maniacs, Terrorizer, and Zero Tolerance.
Hot off of the release of his first solo album Punctuated Equilibrium, Wino will play his first show with his solo band (featuring skinsman extraordinaire Jean-Paul Gaster of Clutch) at the 9:30 club in Washington, DC on Sat Feb 7th! Wino will be joined by King Giant and the mighty Salome, who will be in NYC with Ocean on Feb 15th. In related news, Clutch have released their first digital single "King Of Arizona" (iTunes users, buy it here), from the upcoming remastered Slow Hole to China, Rare & Unreleased. The band have lined up a few dates with their alter ego (most of 'em anyway), The Bakerton Group including Feb 27 at The Chance in Poughkeepsie and Feb 28 at The Crazy Donkey in Farmingdale. Full tour dates below.
As much theorized and finally realized, The Auditory Assault Festival will take place at Club Europa on May 16 & 17.
Complete Failure announced a short tour of the east coast and the midwest with Polish grinders Antigama including an NYC date at Europa on May 20th. Details are forthcoming, full tour dates are below. The Pittsburghers (CF) have posted a trio of demo tracks at their website, check them out above. Antigama is prepping for March 3rd, when Relapse will drop their new album Warning.
Mastodon's Crack The Skye artwork
Mastodon is currently streaming "Divinations" from the upcoming Crack The Skye. Check it out kids... it's a burner! The single is also available for sale with a limited edition tee. Mastodon and Genghis Tron are playing the Coachella festival this year.
Rise Above dropped the new album by Belgians Serpentcult, a doomy hybrid of Electric Wizard and High on Fire fronted by Michelle Nocon, a female with some SERIOUS pipes. The Weight of Light was produced by Billy Anderson (Sleep, Neurosis, Melvins) and the band is streaming three of those tracks at their myspace, with the title track available for download above. So far the band haven't added any North American dates, but if they do, we'll let you know (european tour dates below). Meanwhile, dig on an interview that Serpentcult did with Hellride Music here.
Coliseum have announced a slew of tourdates (below) as well as a new seven-inch entitled "True Quiet / Last Wave" on Deathwish! Full tour dates are below. Coliseum with join Converge, Genghis Tron (who was recently added), Ceremony, Pulling Teeth, and Rise & Fall at Europa on March 27th.
Blut Aus Nord have posted "The Formless Sphere (Beyond The Reason)" to their myspace page, the first new song from the upcoming Memoria Vetusta II - Dialogue With The Stars. Look for in Feb 23rd on Candlelight.
Valient Thorr have added a February 6th show at The Shank in Greenpoint (98 Bayard @ Leonard) with Acid Tiger, Golden Error, with Tournament. This show makes it TWO NYC dates.... don't forget about their upcoming show with Anthrax and a half pipe.

Ya hear that rumble? Thats the sound of great records perched in the distance waiting to descend on 2009 (more on that later). While this year will bring about great music and another set of "next big things", let's take the time to be thankful for 2008 and all of it's memorable records and shows. Here are my favorite records of 2008:
by Black Bubblegum
Michael Amott & Jeff Walker (Carcass) @ Gods Of Metal, June 28, 2008 (shadowgate)
Remember that rumored Carcass show line-up? The one with 1349, Suffocation, Necrophagist, Aborted, AND Rotten Sound? Confirmed, for at least some of the shows anyway (NYC being one of 'em). Let me explain....
The "Exhume To Consume Tour"(Carcass) will intersect with the "Pillage The Village Tour" which sees Necrophagist teaming up with Dying Fetus, Veil Of Maya and Beneath The Massacre. According to the band's individual myspaces and Blabbermouth's reporting on "Pillage" and the Carcass shows, that means that the date at the Palladium in Worcester, MA will get BOTH tours on a single bill and NYC will have Dying Fetus added to the already stupid-ridiculous lineup. So based on those sources, we have the whole thing all Encyclopedia-Brown-ed out for you, down below.
So NYC now gets a mini-festival of sorts..... as we can expect Carcass, 1349, Suffocation, Necrophagist, Aborted, Rotten Sound, AND Dying Fetus. Doors at 11AM (not really).
Dig on the ill flyer (STILL loving that Re-animator theme), and all tour dates, below.....
