Thao / Cults / Richard Reed Parry & Sam Amidon / Jake Shears, Lonnie Holley & more
Master Mix: Red Hot + Arthur Russell
Master Mix: Red Hot + Arthur Russell
Master Mix: Red Hot + Arthur Russell
Master Mix: Red Hot + Arthur Russell

Mr. Russell's eerie, solitary side was assigned to Lonnie Holley, singing in a bluesy, abstracted tone (and sometimes whistling) over clusters sustained on an electric keyboard; to Sam Amidon, who played terse banjo parts and sang with quizzical innocence; and to Richard Reed Parry, playing bass and singing just above a whisper. Devonté Hynes played guitar and sang the lean, meter-shifting indie rock that Mr. Russell recorded as a member of the Necessaries.

The band Cults expanded the distorted cello of Mr. Russell's "Being It" into a rock-guitar roar; "You Can Make Me Feel Bad" turned from a taunt into a cozy group-sing. And Mr. Bogie's house band, complete with a precise horn section, Latin percussion and lead singers including Jake Shears of Scissor Sisters and Kalmia Traver of Rubblebucket, reveled in disco tracks that Mr. Russell recorded as Loose Joints and Dinosaur L. - [New York Times]

Much like last year's William Onyeabor tribute, this year's Red Bull Music Academy closed out at BAM with a two-day tribute (May 29 & 30) -- this time to '80s NYC downtown scene icon Arthur Russell -- featuring a host of talented performers, including Dev Hynes, Sam Amidon with Richard Reed Perry, Thao Nguyen, Lonnie Holley, Cults, Jake Shears of Scissor Sisters and more artists from the Red Hot + Arthur Russell tribute album. Did you check out either night of the tribute shows? Pictures from the first night are in this post.

This year's RBMA officially wrapped with another Russell tribute, a dance party late Saturday night (5/30) at Greenpoint's Good Room that spun tracks from Sleeping Bag Records, the hip hop/dance label Russell co-founded with Will Socolov and Juggy Gales in 1981. Anyone go to that?

In related news, the posthumous Arthur Russell album, Corn comes out next week (6/9) via Audika Records and is now streaming in full on NPR. The album features music recorded in 1982 and 1983.

Like last year, the 2015 Red Bull Music Academy will host a two-night tribute concert at BAM. Last year was William Onyeabor, and this year they'll be paying tribute to the late, great Arthur Russell whose music spanned folk, classical, dance and areas in between. The tribute concerts happen May 29 & 30 at BAM featuring Sam Amidon, Cults, Redding Hunter, Dev Hynes, Thao Nguyen, Richard Reed Parry (Arcade Fire), Rubblebucket, Little Scream and more to be announced. (Originally listed as part of this, Phosphorescent is not currently on this lineup.) The show is co-presented by Red Hot, who released the Arthur Russell tribute album last year that all of these artists are featured on.

Tickets will be on sale soon. A little more info from RBMA:

The epitome of a postmodern musician, Arthur Russell changed the rules in his much-too-brief lifetime. The Iowa-born composer, cellist and singer entered the Downtown NYC scene in the 1970s - and by the time he passed away in 1992, his influence had permeated virtually every aspect of it. Be it as the musical director of experimental art space The Kitchen; collaborator to Allen Ginsberg, David Byrne, and Ali Akbar Khan; disco innovator with his Loose Joints and Dinosaur L projects; or extraordinary solo musician - Arthur Russell was a master of many trades. To honor his legacy, the Red Hot Organization released the compilation Master Mix: Red Hot + Arthur Russell, featuring more than 20 artists paying musical tribute. Over the course of two special evenings at BAM, the Red Bull Music Academy teams up with Red Hot to bring together an all-star cast of musicians to bring the compilation to life.
RBMA will wrap up its 2015 slate with another Arthur Russell-related show at Good Room on May 31, this one paying tribute to Sleeping Bag Records, the hip hop/dance label he co-founded with Will Socolov and Juggy Gales in 1981 that released records by Mantronix, Just-Ice, T La Rock and EPMD to Nocera, Joyce Sims, and Kariya. Kurtis Mantronik, onetime Studio 54 DJ Nicky Siano and Morgan Geist (Metro Area) will play Sleeping Bag sets. Tickets will be on sale soon.

If you're unfamiliar with Arthur Russell's music, you can stream a few of his records (via Rdio) below, and acclaimed documentary, Wild Combination: A Portrait of Arthur Russell is available via iTunes, Amazon and other streaming services.

Squarepusher
Squarepusher

Back in May, drill & bass master Squarepusher announced a North American tour which included a TBA NYC show set to happen on October 30. Well it turns out the NYC show will actually be on November 1 and it happens at Terminal 5 with a great list of openers; Bonobo (DJ), Holy Fuck, and Mount Kimbie. Tickets for that show go on sale Friday (6/29) at noon with an AmEx presale starting today (6/27) at noon. All Squarepusher dates are listed below.

Squarepusher released his new album, Ufabulum, in May and it's a pretty solid one. It opens with "4001," which is just about the only song that sounds like classic Squarepusher, and is then followed by, "Unreal Square," which brings in a bit of brostep bass wobble. The rest of the album sees Squarepusher diving into nutty jazz fusion and unstoppable breakbeats. You can stream three of its tracks below.

Speaking of Mount Kimbie, they've signed to Warp, the label which Squarepusher also calls home, and currently at work on their second album which will be released on the label. The Terminal 5 show appears to be their only announced North American date at the moment.

Holy Fuck and Bonobo will be in NY even sooner for Camp Bisco, which goes down from July 12-14 at Indian Lookout Country Club in Mariaville, NY. They'll be joining a lineup which includes Tycho, Simian Mobile Disco, Skrillex, Amon Tobin ISAM, Big Boi, Crystal Castles, Yacht, Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire, Shigeto, FaltyDL, Thundercat, and more. Tickets for the festival are still available. The full lineup is listed below.

In related news, You can also catch Holy Fuck frontman Brian Borcherdt in NYC right after Bisco with his new project, Dusted, who play Glasslands on July 15. Tickets for that show are still available.

A list of all dates and song streams below...
