The Ruby Suns

The Ruby Suns' album "Sea Lion" came out on Sub Pop on March 4th, they played the Sub Pop showcase at SXSW on March 14th (photos in this post), and now they're in NYC just in time to celebrate Christ rising from the dead tonight (March 23) at Mercury Lounge. They also play Union Hall tomorrow (Monday). Both shows are with Le Loup who originally had Bodies of Water as their tour partner until Bodies of Water moved on to the Sons and Daughters tour instead. The Ruby Suns are also coming back to NYC in May - that time with their labemates Foals. All tour dates and more photos below....

I flew in to Austin on wednesday morning and the festival was already going strong. After picking up my credentials and looking out from the top of the convention center I started to get a feel for the scope and scale of the whole event.

on top of the Austin convention center
SXSW

My first stop was the Mohawk for a party sponsored by the familliar Gothamist/Austinist websites. While the first band i saw 'We Barbarians' didnt impress me much, their set allowed for ample time to catch my bearings and down a few complimentary beers. It wasn't too long before i realized Phosphorescent was playing inside downstairs to a packed house. Then Shearwater started their set outside. I tried to catch as much of each set without jumping back and forth - a strategy I would get better at as the days went on.....

Todd P Campus Show

Todd P comes up with some of the best show ideas at SXSW, and some of them happen really late. This one for instance: "MIDNIGHT UNAMPLIFIED ACOUSTIC BBQ (sans the BBQ'n)"...

:: a late late night unamplified acoustic party w/ lots 'o buds
:: who're in Austin for the fest - just 2 songs apiece, unamplified!

:: this is a bit of an experiment because we have no permit of any
:: kind - then again, why would we need one? it's unamplified!

:: WARNING: as this is @ a park on a college campus late at nite,
:: it is totally possible that the campus police will show up & write
:: ticket to folks for whatever reasons they can come up with.
:: BE WARNED!

:: NOTE: no open bottles or cans, so BYO & put it in a cup!

I would have liked to go to this, but I had two shows of my own on Wednesday (day and night), and then one immediately the next day on Thursday morning (maybe if I hadn't forgotten to pack my crystal meth). Instead I caught a few hours of sleep, but Ryan journeyed out there and snapped the pictures you see in this post.....

HF @ Emo's Annex (BV day party) - Mar 13, 2008 (Ryan Muir)
Holy Fuck @ SXSW

I heard that everywhere Holy Fuck played (during SXSW) was packed with people. My own party at the 600-capacity Emo's Annex on Thursday afternoon (March 13) was no exception. Holy Fuck were scheduled to play at 5:20. By 5:00 (around the time Phosphorescent was leaving the stage), we were completely 'sold out' and a line started to form down the street. I was honestly a little suprised (as surprised as I was when the opposite happened to Shearwater when they played their 1am set after Martha Wainwright at my official showcase the night before).

HF @ Emo's Annex (BV day party) - Mar 13, 2008 (Leia Jospe)
Holy Fuck @ SXSW

Anyway, the place was filled and HF proceeded to play a fantastic, dancetastic set that pretty much everyone I talked to was in turn talking about - especially the part where they loop that film through that thing and it makes that noise....(see above). I heard they also *killed it* at Rachael Ray's, and Matt YANP said "they're darn near perfect" after catching their Wednesday set at a Gorilla vs Bear day party.

Eduardo once compared them to Battles in the comments. I think that's a good one. They both have a similar mostly-instrumental-electronic sound and are both good, but Battles were able to headline Webster Hall already and Holy Fuck are just reaching the point where they're touring as the opener for one of their label-mates (Super Furry Animals) and co-headlining Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn (with A Place To Bury Strangers on March 22). I think that's because Battles had a really catchy hit song (relatively speaking) and a little more help, but if the buzz at SXSW is any indication, Holy Fuck will definitely be right there with them in no time - the more old fashioned way. Oh yeah, tickets for Saturday's show are still NOT YET SOLD OUT. All dates and more SXSW photos below......

Playboy party

Unlike last year's semi-swanky, semi-outdoors, semi-conventient location, this year's SXSW Playboy party (Thursday night, March 13, 2008) felt more like a rave in a big abandoned (yet conveniently located) warehouse (which ended up being the same location as the late night VICE party that happened later in the week). LIKE last year, there was a bunch of Playboy models running around in blue bunny outfits, and there was plenty of free alcohol available all night....well past Austin's 2am bar closing time.

Playboy party

I got there right before Moby started (around 1?), and left almost before Justice finished (around 4). I'm a big fan of classic techno, and especially classic Moby, so Moby's classic techo-heavy set kept me more than happy - especailly when he closed with "Thousand". Justice's DJ set was good too, and the visuals were definitely entertaining, but I was really just a zombie by that point. I was thinking, "this would be really fun if I could do more than just stand here". Up until then my SXSW went something like this.....

Tuesday: last minute preparation all day, fly to Texas, arrive at midnight, check into hotel, sleep.

Wednesday: wake up early --> change hotels & run errands --> my Wednesday day party ---> run more errands real quick --> my official showcase till 2am.

Thursday: wake up early ---> get to Emo's by 10:30 for Thursday day party ---> dinner & short break ---> see Jens Lekman @ the Mohawk (which was as good as always) ---> Playboy Party ---> collapse

Ryan was not only more awake than me, he got to the Playboy party earlier, stayed later, danced a lot, and thought it was pretty much the best party he went to all last week (unless you count the all day Mess With Texas festival on Saturday). More of Ryan's photos (which also include openers The Rub, MGMT and The Heavy), below.....

Leonard Cohen, RnR Hall of Fame induction - Mar 10, 2008 (Ryan Muir)
Leonard Cohen @ RNR Hall of FAme

Madonna spoke of being possessed by magic as she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Monday along with Leonard Cohen, rocker John Mellencamp, pop band The Dave Clark Five and instrumental group The Ventures.

"I felt like I had been possessed by some magic and luckily for me I have been miraculously and continuously possessed by some kind of magic," Madonna said at the annual Hall of Fame ceremony in New York.

"I have gone on to do so many things in my life, from writing children's books, to designing clothes, to directing a film. But for me it always does, and it always will, come back to the music, so thank you," she said.

Madonna, 49, was inducted by pop star Justin Timberlake, who has co-written and co-produced half the songs on her new album "Hard Candy," which is released next month. "Nobody has gotten into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame looking this damn fine," he said. "You're no old museum piece." [Reuters]

She and him @ Noise Pop

We're skipping ahead for a second. We already know what Ryan did on his first night in San Francisco. Here's how he spent his last.....

She and him @ Noise Pop

The 2008 Noise Pop Festival came to an end in San Francisco last night (March 2, 2008) with what was arguably the biggest (or at least most newsworthy) event of the four days: the live debut of She & Him which is also known as the new musical project of M Ward & actress Zooey DeschanelShe and Him.

Their set included what must be most of their originals, plus a few covers, like Smokey's "You Really got a Hold on Me" and Sam Cooke's "Bring it Back Home" (give those a listen). (Another really solid cover was I Put a Spell on You which closed out their encore.) Those, in fact, along with a gorgeous piano song (the first piano number they played; the title, I don't know) were the highlights of the set. The musicianship was good and Zooey's voice is great. The songwriting is pretty decent-some engaging lyrics and melodies. [ipickmynose]
Ryan liked it too. More on that and many more pictures below....

The Walkmen @ Noise Pop

The Walkmen @ Noise Pop

(Thursday, Feb 28, 2008) - After a few flight delays in getting to San Francisco for the 2008 Noise Pop Festival (though I don't know if I'd really consider it a "festival"), I ended up making my way into a sold out show at The Independent to catch performances by Nyles Lannon, The Broken West, and the band that everyone was there for: The Walkmen. I just missed openers A Modern Machine.

The Independent is a relatively small venue - on the scale of Studio B in Brooklyn, but the upper balcony makes it feel a bit like Bowery Ballroom or Music Hall of Williamsburg. More photos and reviews from the show below....

Phosphorescent (who played Union Hall last night w/ Bowerbirds & The Acorn) is playing NYU. I didn't research it, but he may not also be playing Glasslands. Or maybe he is. Who knows?

Daniel Johnston @ Highline Ballroom

Daniel Johnston @ Highline Ballroom

NYC band Spanish Prisoners opened the show at Highline Ballroom, AND played some songs as Daniel's backing band. I was curious to know how that all came about, so I asked Spanish Prisoner frontman Leo Maymind about it before the show. He said....

I've always been a big fan of Daniel's music- it has a very innocent quality to it that attracted me to it. I saw that he was coming to New York and I got in touch with the venue, and we arranged the show so that my band, Spanish Prisoners, could open and back Daniel up for his set as well. This is something he's done in the past with previous tours, so it just worked out really well.

...we're only backing Daniel at this one show (as of now). We're going to be doing 5 or 6 songs with him, and he may be doing some solo, and some with his own guitarist.

I actually chose the songs we're doing with him from a list of possible songs. We rehearsed them on our own and are going over them with Daniel quickly at soundcheck. It's definitely an off-the-cuff sort of thing, so it'll be interesting and loose.
