Black God

Some may see Louisville punk band Black God as a continuation of the mighty Black Cross, but with songs like these, they definitely should stand on their own. Black God, made up of BC members Ryan Patterson (also Coliseum) and Rob Pennington (also Endpoint/By The Grace of God) as well as Nick Thieneman (Young Widows/Breather Resist), and Ben Sears (Mountain Asleep), is welcoming their second seven-inch via No Idea TODAY and are streaming that in full for the first time below.

We asked Rob Pennington and Ryan Patterson a few questions about the Black God project, the comparisons to Black Cross, the current status of Coliseum and Endpoint, and more in an interview that you can read, along with the 7" stream and a full live show video, below...

Coliseum

After an awesome show the night before at Public Assembly, Coliseum played a second show in Brooklyn at Union Pool last night/Sunday (5/15), this time with The Austerity Program, The Year is One, and Masakari who was added to the bill late on Saturday night, and ended up playing four shows during their two-night NYC stay (Public Assembly, ABC No Rio, and C-Squat as well).

If you missed Coliseum last night or Saturday, it may be some time before you catch them again. Guitarist/vocalist Ryan Patterson announced that this tour would be their last for a while, as the band is taking some time to focus on their follow-up to their well-crafted LP House With A Curse.

Seeing Coliseum twice this past weekend confirmed what I already knew, that this Louisville band has a deep and varied catalog that not only destroys, but also challenges. Coliseum could easily churn out record after record of well-crafted by-the-books d-beat, but they want more. And with their excellent songwriting, I think they'll get it. It'll be interesting to see where Patterson & the boys take it next.

"In the course of talking about the reissue I brought up the idea of playing some shows because I was like well look, if we were ever going to do this, if we were ever going to play again, you know, now would be the time to do it." - J Robbins

J Robbins

Jawbox was one of a few who defined the sound of the 90's underground. After releasing records on respected uber-indie Dischord, the band dropped their masterpiece For Your Own Special Sweetheart as their major label debut for Atlantic. Razor sharp post-hardcore riffage collided with tense emotional songwriting to create one of the greatest, yet most unsung LPs of the era. The band followed up Sweetheart with a self-titled LP before calling it quits in 1997.

Recently Jawbox celebrated reissued Sweetheart and celebrated with a performance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. We cornered vocalist/guitarist J Robbins before that performance to talk about the band, their future, his production work, and the Baltimore/DC music scene...
