Miguel on 'SNL' / Daft Punk w/ Pharrell & Nile Rogers
IMAGE
IMAGE

Another new SNL, another new Daft Punk commercial. This one -- a slightly shorter version of the one shown to Coachella audiences -- gives us the first substantial taste of Random Access Memories' "Get Lucky," that's been teased in previous ads, and features both Pharrel Williams and and some chic guitarwork from Nile Rodgers, not to mention the men/robots themselves. This is, we assume, a snippet of the "Get Lucky" video? You can watch it below.

Meanwhile, Daft Punk have released the third in their "Collaborators" series of promotional videos with the folks who worked on Random Access Memories. This one is with Nile Rodgers who very humbly talks about his contribution to dance music over the years and you can watch that below too.

Meanwhile, on the actual show (4/13), Miguel performed his Grammy-winning hit "Adorn" and then a rocked-out version of "How Many Drinks," with that magnetism (that we saw at our BV CMJ day party last year) on full display. The next new SNL is May 4 with Of Monsters and Men performing, while Zach Galifianakis hosts. Miguel videos from last night are below.

Justin Timberlake

It was probably the most-anticipated episode of Saturday Night Live of the season, with Justin Timberlake on double duty as host and musical guest. The writers love JT and they show usually pulls out all the stops for him. Last night (3/9) was no different. Jay-Z showed up for "Suit and Tie," giving us a preview of what to expect this summer (like at Yankee Stadium on 7/19). He also performed "Mirrors."

Jay-Z was only one of what was one of the most guest-star-filled episodes ever. This was JT's fifth time hosting which put him in the Five Timers Club, where Paul Simon, Tom Hanks, Steve Martin, Alec Baldwin, Candice Bergen, and Chevy Chase were to greet him. (Dan Ackroyd tended bar and Martin Short was there too.) Ackroyd and Martin reprised their wild-and-crazy Festrunk Brothers characters for a dating gameshow sketch that also featured JT and Andy Samberg as the "Dick in a Box" roles. Timberlake also put back on the "bring it on to ____ville" costume, this time as a block of tofu for a vegan restaurant.

The next new SNL is April 6 with Melissa McCarthy hosting and Phoenix as musical guests. Clips from last night's SNL are below.

For those who were watching live or don't DVR fast-forward through commercials, there was a 15-second Daft Punk ad last night during an otherwise lackluster episode of Saturday Night Live. It was just the band's logo with the two robot masks (the ones currently on the band's nomepage) coming together, with a bit of music. But seems like things are in the works! Watch it below.

Alabama Shakes

Alabama Shakes (or "Alabama Shake" as SNL host Christoph Waltz accidentally called them the first of three times he said their name last night), who played a Valentine's Day show on a boat while they were in town, were the musical guest on Saturday Night Live last night. Not a bad week for the quickly rising young band who also just showed up on the Grammys. My favorite part of SNL is hearing what my parents thought of the musical guest every Sunday. Mom loved them. Dad could only keep asking why they seemed so angry. What did you think? Watch the SNL performances below...

"had a blast on the Rocks off cruise on the hudson river with Alabama shakes they were unbelievable" - Felix Joshua

Alabama Shakes

Alabama Shakes, who didn't win a Grammy but whose powerful frontwoman Brittany Howard performed during the Levon Helm tribute, stopped by NYC for a last-minute Valentine's Day show on a boat last night (2/14). The show, which was presented by Rocks Off, was in a crazy crowded dark room filled with fans, and the band played most of their 2012 debut, Boys & Girls, including a couple of the bonus tracks. They also included the new-ish song, "Making Me Itch" non-album cut, "Heat Lightning," and ended with a cover of Led Zeppelin's "How Many More Times."

Of course Alabama Shakes are in NYC to play Saturday Night Live this weekend (2/16) with host Christolph Waltz. They spent part of Thursday afternoon rehearsing at the 30 Rock studios. Let's hope this week's SNL is better than recent episodes with Adam Levine and Justin Bieber.

More pictures from Alabama Shakes' Rocks Off show (as well as pics of openers Daddy Long Legs) and the setlist are below.

Alabama Shakes @ T5, Oct. 2013 (more by Tracy Allison)
Alabama Shakes

What a run Alabama Shakes have had, going from playing tiny clubs in NYC to headlining Terminal 5 in less than a year. (And it couldn't have happened to a nicer band.) What's next for them? Being the musical guests on Saturday Night Live which will happen on February 16 with host Christolph Waltz (so good in Inglorious Basterds and Django Unchained).

Their tour schedule is open for a bit, maybe they'll fit in a NYC show while here? From March on, though, Alabama Shakes will stay busy on the road and updated dates are below.

No new SNL this week but Justin Bieber pulls double duty as host and musical guest on February 9.

Kendrick Lamar

Kendrick Lamar appeared on Saturday Night Live last night (1/26) to perform two tracks off of good kid, m.A.A.d city, "Swimming Pools (Drank)" and "Poetic Justice" with a killer live band in TDE shirts. He also appeared in a digital short with The Lonely Island to do a track called "YOLO." You can watch videos of all three songs below.

Kendrick will return to NYC in June for Governors Ball. 3-day passes for that festival are on general sale now.

Fred meditates on his top ten...
IMAGE

In my tenure as BV's tallest and prettiest contributor, I've noticed that one of the most polarizing figures we mention on here is the great Fred Armisen. It's like, any time we mention this dude all the negative-Nancys crawl out of the wood work. Oh well... You know what they say ('they' being people who use terrible quips to express themselves); "Haters gonna hate." The reality is, Fred Armisen rules. He's one of my most favorite, funny, uber-talented oddballs in the biz. He's consistently funny on SNL, no matter how abysmal the sketch may be. His show Portlandia (which returns January 4th 2013 on IFC) is one of the funniest shows to hit the gogglebox in recent memory. And he keeps it real with small-venue residencies and club shows. Fred recently hipped us to the top 10 records of 2012 that floated his boat.

In addition to Portlandia's imminent return (many guest stars included), and the Portlandia book which is currently available, don't forget the Fred is hosting the Snow Ball Ball at the Bell (Ball) House on Sunday December 16. The show also features guest DJs Tunde Adebimpe (from TV On the Radio), Peter Hale (from Here We Go Magic) and more!

Check out Fred's 'Best of' list, below...

Portlandia

Fred Armisen and Eleanor Friedberger are appearing this Thursday (11/15) at Barnes & Noble Union Square in NYC for the bookstore's "Upstairs at the Square" series which is hosted by NPR's Katherine Lanpher. Fred will be talking about his and Carrie Brownstein's new book, PORTLANDIA: A Guide for Visitors and other subjects, with Eleanor Friedberger performing live. Fred's a drummer (among other things), so maybe he'll play along too.

Eleanor just wrapped up recording her new solo album for Merge which she recorded at DFA studios. Maybe you heard her preview new material at the Merge CMJ showcase last month? While you wait for that to come out, Eleanor appears on the new Christmas album Holidays Rule where she contributes a cover of Elvis' "Santa Please Bring My Baby (Back to Me)." Other artists on the compilation include Tame Impala, The Shins, Andrew Bird, Rufus Wainwright with Sharon Van Etten, Paul McCartney and more. You can stream the whole thing via Rdio below.

Meanwhile, Eleanor's brother (and Fiery Furnaces bandmate) Matthew Friedberger is currently on tour with The Sea & Cake which stops in spookily-lit Marfa, TX tonight. All tour dates are listed below.

When not promo-ing his new book (you preview it here and watch the video trailer for it below), Fred Armisen is staying busy on SNL where he recently played Mayor Bloomberg giving one of his post-Sandy NYC addresses, shoutout to "Homeland" included, below...

Lincoln CK

As anyone could have guessed, comedic genius Louis CK's appearance on Saturday Night Live on Saturday night (11/3) was a success. If you missed it, make sure and check out some clips from the show below.

As you may have heard, Louis CK recently released a live set by Tig Notaro, and we're happy to report that you can catch Tig live in Brooklyn soon. Catch a live taping of her weekly podcast Professor Blastoff on November 17th at the Bell House in Brooklyn. The rare live taping promises "special guests" in addition to Notaro's co-hosts/regulars Kyle Dunnigan and David Huntsberger, and tickets are still available (though reportedly selling fast). The agoraphobic can catch up with previous episodes via the interweb.

Swing below for some great SNL videos..

Louis CK

Louis CK starts his run of NYC shows at the New York City Center tonight (10/22) that goes through Sunday (10/28). He's then got a week off from his massive, self-ticketed tour which he'll spend preparing for his first-ever SNL hosting gig on November 3 with musical guest fun.

This should be interesting. Given the ammount of control the Emmy-winning comedian demands of everything he's involved in these days, it doesn't seem likely CK (who wrote for Robert Smigel's "TV Funhouse" bits) will just be thrown into another "What's Up with That?" sketch. But we shall see.

This past weekend's SNL with Bruno Mars was pretty forgettable but did include a nice short film, "Sad Mouse," which you can watch below.

Armed with backup singers, Passion Pit played Saturday Night Live last night (10/13), performing "Take a Walk" and "Carried Away" both from the band's Gossamer LP. SNL has notoriously wonky sound, but PP did a pretty good job. Christina Applegate hosted, her first time doing so since Married with Children was still on the air.

Passion Pit are currently on tour and while they won't be hitting NYC this time around, their tourmates Hollerado will play Mercury Lounge on November 7.

Next week (10/20), set your DVRs (or, y'know, don't) as Bruno Mars will not only perform but also host SNL. Video of both Passion Pit performances are below, along with the "Tech Talk" sketch, probably the funniest bit of last night's show.

Muse w/ The Dap-Kings horns & Michael Leonhart backstage (via)
Muse Dapkings

Muse came to NYC this weekend to play Saturday Night Live, and during their set they were joined by The Dap-Kings' horn section and multi-instrumentalist Michael Leonhart. They performed "Madness" and "Panic Station" off Muse's new album, The 2nd Law (available at iTunes). You can watch videos of those performances below.

As mentioned, Muse will return to the NYC area when their 2013 tour hits MSG (4/15) and Izod Center (4/19). That tour also just grew bigger. All dates, and on sale times, are listed under the videos below...

NY Mag

Grizzly Bear are on the cover of the new issue of NY Magazine, which makes two weeks in a row that Brooklyn was prominently featured.

Despite making it into Billboard's Top 10 with their new album, Shields, the band still aren't making a lot of money.

Check out pictures from the show they just played in Chicago with Lower Dens.

And speaking of Brooklyn, get ready for Brooklyn Bowl Las Vegas.

"The Artwork of Robert Pollard & Tobin Sprout" is opening in Brooklyn soon. Meanwhile check out our recent Guided by Voices pictures from both Austin and the Deluna Fest in Florida.

Crystal Castles and HEALTH play Roseland on Wednesday (10/3). We're giving away tickets here and on our Facebook too.

Also on Wednesday, M83 plays Hammerstein Ballroom and we're giving away tickets to that on Facebook too. Tickets are also still on sale.

Another Facebook contest: win tickets to see Raveonettes and Melody's Echo Chamber at Webster Hall on Friday (10/5).

The Compact Disc turns 30 years old today. The first CD pressed in America was Bruce Springsteen's Born in the USA (though Billy Joe's 52nd Street came out in Japan before that). What was the first CD you bought?

Speaking of Bruce Springsteen, Kenny's Castaways, where he used to play is hosting their final show tonight.

Producer and TV On the Radio member Dave Sitek has launched Federal Prism, "a new record label where Sitek will personally record, mix, produce, and release a series of limited edition 12-inch vinyl picture discs with a uniquely curator-driven perspective. The vinyl will be limited to 500 numbered copies each with a jacket personally hand silkscreened by Sitek."

Federal Prism's first release is "Destroyer" by Telepathe. "The b-side of the vinyl will feature a remix by Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor with Alessandro Cortini and Atticus Ross. Sitek adds, "I told Trent I was starting my own label and would love to have him remix something on the first release. I sent him the session and before he actually said 'YES', he sent back this mighty dark space that he, Alessandro and Atticus had built for me! I was shocked and am certain I will have to keep ripping them off for years!"" It's on sale now.

Speaking of Trent Reznor, he says his his band How To Destroy Angels, have "formally partnered with Columbia Records for our next series of releases. The first of these will be available in November and it's called An Omen EP."

Scary: Ryan Adams revealed via Twitter: "Recording a track with my new pal @deadmau5 today. Sounds like BladeRunner starring Don Henley."

More scary: As if it wasn't bad enough that Bruno Mars has been announced as the host of the 10/20 episode of SNL, they're letting him be the musical performer for that episode too!

But here's some good news: Now That's What I Call Music 83 will reportedly be the last in the series.

Frank Ocean, Seth MacFarlane & Fred Armisen (who is no longer Obama) @ SNL
Frank Ocean

We actually already posted this in WGO Sunday, but in case you missed the awesomeness:

Frank Ocean appeared on Saturday Night Live last night (9/16) to perform "Thinking About You" and "Pyramids," and was joined by John Mayer on guitar. He also just revealed the music video for "Pyramids," which also features an appearance from John Mayer.
Frank Ocean plays live at ATP NY on Friday night. Watch the videos of his SNL performance and the "Pyramids" music video below.

Frank Ocean at Lollapalooza 2012 (more by James Richards IV)
Frank Ocean

As mentioned, Frank Ocean who now has a much emptier September schedule after canceling a bunch of European dates will be in NYC to play the Afghan Whigs-curated ATP NY, which goes down on Pier 36 from September 21-23. Frank plays on the Friday (9/21). Tickets for ATP NY are still available.

He'll be heading to NYC a bit sooner than though, because as Entertainment Weekly points out, Frank Ocean will be the musical guest on the 38th seaosn premiere of Saturday Night Live on September 15. That episode will be hosted by Seth MacFarlane, who will be plugging new seasons of Family Guy, American Dad, and The Cleveland Show, along the DVD release of his new movie, Ted.

Frank Ocean will also perform at the MTV VMAs, which airs on September 6. He's going up against Carly Rae Jepsen, fun., One Direction, and The Wanted for Best New Artist and his song "Swim Good" is nominated for Best Male Video against videos by Chris Brown, Drake, Justin Bieber, and Usher. It was also nominated for Best Direction.

The "Swim Good" video is below.

Joanna Newsom

Speaking of Andy Samberg, well actually that isn't his tattoo, but now the pressure is on for him to outdo this fan whose body art "is based on the Joanna Newsom Ys album and was done by the wonderful Rachel Baldwin at Modern Body Art Birmingham." More pictures of the tat, and a recent video entitled "7 Minutes in Heaven with Joanna Newsom" by Saturday Night Live writer Mike O'Brien, along with a couple of dates, below...

The Office

The NY Times says:

It's time to take a last nostalgic look at Jim, Pam and Dwight and their quotidian struggles and successes at the Scranton branch of the Dunder Mifflin paper company as they've been documented on "The Office." When that NBC comedy begins its ninth season on Sept. 20, it will be the final season of the series, its executive producer Greg Daniels said on Tuesday.
Speaking of things on NBC ending, it was recently announced that Abby Elliot is not returning to SNL which also recently lost Andy Samberg and Kristen Wiig. The NY Times says:
Producers at "Saturday Night Live" are continuing to audition new cast members for the show, which begins its 38th season on Sept. 15. NBC will also broadcast two prime-time "Weekend Update" specials on Sept. 20 and Sept. 27.
The article implies Jason Sudeikis may ready to leave as well. The musical guest for September 15 is still TBA.

Celeste and Jesse Forever

In director Lee Toland Krieger's comedic drama Celeste and Jesse Forever, Celeste (Rashida Jones) and Jesse (Andy Samberg) met in high school, married young and are growing apart. Now thirty, Celeste is the driven owner of her own media consulting firm, while Jesse is once again unemployed and in no particular rush to do anything with his life. Celeste is convinced that divorcing Jesse is the right thing to do--she is on her way up, he is on his way nowhere, and if they do it now instead of later, they can remain supportive friends. Jesse passively accepts this transition into friendship, even though he is still in love with her. As the reality of their separation sets in, Celeste slowly and painfully realizes she has been cavalier about their relationship. While navigating the turbulent changes in their lives and in their hearts, these two learn that in order to truly love someone, you may have to let them go.
As you you might have been able to tell from the flyer above, BrooklynVegan is presenting a free preview screening of Celeste and Jesse Forever on Monday, July 30 at 7PM at Landmark Sunshine Cinema (143 E. Houston St., NYC). To get a pair of screening passes, you need to RSVP to to BVCONTESTS@HOTMAIL.COM with the subject line "Celeste and Jesse Forever." Include your first and last name in the email and your phone number. Your contact info will not be shared with anyone else, and only used to confirm your reservation. BUT, as usual with these sort of things, you need to RSVP, but the screening (capacity 166) is first-come, first-served for those on the RSVP list (aka RSVP does not guarantee entry so arrive early to claim your spot).

The day after our screening, 92YTribeca will show the film as well, with a post-screening Q&A with actors Rashida Jones (who co-wrote the screenplay) and Will McCormack as well as director Lee Toland Krieger. This one's not free ($18) and you can buy tickets here. The film opens at Sunshine Cinema and elsewhere in NYC & LA in limited release on August 3. You can watch the trailer below.

Mick Jagger

The 37th season of Saturday Night Live comes to a close next weekend (May 19) where Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger will pull double duty as both host and musical guest. Before you plan your bathroom breaks you might be interested to learn that Mick's backing band will include both Foo Fighters and Arcade Fire. Though we're still eight days from the live telecast, Jann Wenner has already give the SNL season finale five stars.

Meanwhile, this week's SNL has Will Ferrell and Usher.

What songs Mick will do is anyone's guess, but Will (brother of Win) Butler and other members of the Arcade Fire (as Phi Slamma Jamma) may have been getting some practice with a cover of the Stones' "The Last Time" at last weekend's Crossing Brooklyn Ferry festival.

Last year, Mick released the debut album by his new group SuperHeavy that also includes Joss Stone, Damian Marley and the Eurythmics' Dave Stewart. The video for SuperHeavy's single "Miracle Worker" is below.

Gotye / Kimbra @ Webster Hall - 3/27/2012
Gotye
Kimbra

New huge stars from Down Under, Gotye & Kimbra brought their sold out tour to Webster Hall in NYC last night (3/27), two nights after they did it at the bigger Terminal 5, and one night after Kimbra played her own small show at Mercury Lounge. Here are some pictures from the Webster show.

The tour, which is currently on its way north towards Canada, will continue west towards Coachella where Gotye will play the two-weekend festival on both April 15 & 22. Right before that, he'll head back to NYC (maybe with Kimbra) to be the musical guest on Saturday Night Live on Saturday, April 14th (Josh Brolin is the host). But west coasters take note:

This special TV appearance has caused two changes to the original tour dates. Firstly, the show at The Independent in San Francisco, CA on April 12 has been moved to a bigger venue and rescheduled. You can now see Gotye at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium on Wednesday, April 18. Tickets for the original date will be honored at the door. The general public can buy tickets on Friday, March 30. Please note that Kimbra will now not be performing at this show due to pre-existing European commitments however joining Gotye as special guest for this date will be fellow Australian singer/songwriter, Missy Higgins.

Also Gotye's show at The Crystal Ballroom in Portland, OR on April 11 has been rescheduled to Monday, April 9. Tickets for the original date will be honored at the door. Kimbra will still appear at this show. Full refunds will be available for those unable to attend the rescheduled shows.

Last but not least, one extra show has just been added to Gotye's North American tour. On April 19, he will perform in Los Angeles at the Nokia Theatre - L.A Live. Missy Higgins will be special guest on this date - previewing material from a new album she's planning to release over summer. Tickets for this L.A. show will go onsale to the general public on Friday, March 30.
Updated tour dates and more pictures from the Webster Hall show, below...
