The Shins are set to perform on SNL on March 10, ten days before the release of their new album, Port of Morrow, due out on March 20 via Aural Apothecary/Columbia Records. It will be the band's second SNL performance (they first performed in 2007).
While they're in town they'll be playing a streaming show too:
The Shins are back! NPR invites you to experience the anticipated new album Port Of Morrow in an exclusive live concert stream via the new NPR Music iPad app. Download the free NPR Music app to watch the live show on March 7 at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT.The show will take place at a club in NYC.
They just released a video for the album's single, "Simple Song," which you can watch below, along with a lyric video for that song's b-side, "September," and all dates...

Sleigh Bells' Reign of Terror has begun, first with a show at Terminal 5 on February 17th with Black Bananas and Wet Witch (that was streamed online) and then with a Saturday Night Live appearance the next night. Pictures and videos from both NYC events are in this post.
Reign of Terror is the band's latest LP which hit store shelves this week (2/21). You can check out some live videos of some of the tracks below along with video from their Saturday Night Live appearance, which the Washington Post called "lousy". Judge their tunes for yourself at the New York Times.
Pictures from T5, live videos from the stream & SNL, and more tour dates are below.
As mentioned, Jack White will release his first solo album, Blunderbuss, on April 24 via Third Man/Columbia. You've already heard the first single, "Love Interruption," which is out now digitally. You can watch the video for that track below. Its b-side, "Machine Gun Silhouette," allegedly surfaced on soundcloud earlier this month and has since been removed but you can try your luck with some of the streams on tumblr.
Jack White has a few tour dates coming up (none in NYC) but he will be here as the musical guest on SNL on March 3. That episode is being hosted by Lindsay Lohan. Sleigh Bells were the last SNL guest, and The Shins play the week after Jack White (with host Jonah Hill).
All Jack White dates (which do not include SXSW, though there is a rumor) and video below...

M.I.A. was there to discuss her Superbowl Halftime incident from the week before. You can watch that, and "Bein' Quirky with Zooey Deschanel" from the same episode (Bjork guest appearance included), below.

Brooklyn Bowl is probalby a great place to watch the Superbowl (if you like football and don't mind lots of people).
Madonna, Nicki Minaj, and most interestingly, M.I.A. are performing during the Superbowl's Halftime show.
Fred Armisen, who like Bon Iver, performed on Saturday Night Live last night, and like St. Vincent, appeared on a new episode of Portlandia one night before that, plays his first residency show at Union Pool tonight.
Lana Del Rey was on SNL last night too.
Papermag shows us "Downton Abbey Stars On-Screen Vs. Off-Screen." The Guardian has an article about how they got the World War I trenches. A new (for the US) episode of Downton Abbey premieres tonight on PBS. A new commercial for Downton (or is it Downtown) Abbey on Spike TV premiered on Saturday Night Live last night. Watch that commercial below.

"Rolling Stone asked me to speak about Lana Del Rey. I wanted to know how big my participation in the piece would be-was it substantial or just a quote? Just a quote, they said, to which I replied that I wasn't super interested. Which was a lie. I have a lot to say about her, but no sound bites. You see, Lana Del Rey is exactly what I was hoping to inspire when I took on the male rock establishment almost twenty years ago with my debut record, "Exile In Guyville.""... [Liz Phair]Read the rest of Liz Phair's piece at the Wall Street Journal.
And speaking of LDR, who recently performed on Letterman, Bon Iver wasn't the only musical guest on Saturday Night Live last night. Lana Del Rey, who was on two weeks earlier, came back to discuss her famous performance on Weekend Update with Seth Meyers. Check out the video below...
a handsome-looking Justin Vernon on Saturday Night Live
Though we won't see him/them performing at the Grammys ("We wanted to play our music, but were told that we couldn't play. We had to do a collaboration with someone else," Justin said), Bon Iver played two songs off their latest album on Saturday Night Live last night (2/4). Watch both songs below.
Earlier the same day, Wisconsin's WEAU profiled the Grammy-nominated artist on the evening news, interviews with Justin's parents and his co-manager Kyle Frenette included.
"Music was always around the house, we made all the kids take piano lessons," says Justine. "With Justin, he didn't really like the piano all that much, especially when I was teaching him for a while. That did not work out, but he asked if he could quit piano if he went to guitar. From that point on it was him and his guitar always."Watch "At Home With the Vernons" and and both performances from Saturday Night Live, below...
Gil says he did what he can to make sure Justin had a place to practice.
"We actually partitioned a room in the basement right below us with sound proof in the wall, so we could actually sit in the room where we're speaking now and watch TV and have a full conversation in spite of the fact that we had nine kids down there with trombones, trumpet, two saxophones, three guitars and a keyboard all plugged in," he says.
Today, Bon Iver is also made up of nine musicians, but the Vernons didn't always know their now 30-year-old son and his band would make is this far.
"We always thought that he had talent but we're his parents, you have to take that with a grain of salt," says Justine.
Just saw that tweet for the first time via Hot Chip while looking for info on Hot Chip's new album. As you know, Lana Del Rey played SNL this past weekend (Hipster Runoff has since renamed his website in her honor). Bon Iver will hopefully do better on February 4th. Maybe LCD Soundsystem will get to play SNL if they ever reunite. For now we can make due by watching them in the documentary about their last show ever.
Bon Iver at The Long Center in TX in 2011 (more by Tim Griffin)
Justin Vernon is currently in NYC, possibly just to "curse the Giants" (who won), or maybe he came to check out SNL musical guest Lana Del Rey (who lost) so that he he can become familiar with the SNL setup because Justin will return to NY next month when Bon Iver is the musical guest on SNL on February 4. They'll be playing songs off of the Grammy-nominated Bon Iver, Bon Iver (which was one of our favorites of 2011).
In related news, Bon Iver were recently confirmed as one of the collaborators on The Flaming Lips' Record Store Day release, which also includes collaborations with Neon Indian, Lightning Bolt, and Prefuse 73, who they put out collaborative EPs with in 2011, in addition to Nick Cave, Death Cab for Cutie, Yoko Ono, Ghostland Observatory, Cloudland Canyon, and more TBA.
Bon Iver's most recent track from Bon Iver, Bon Iver to be chosen as a single is "Towers" and the single b/w "Bruise Orange (Chain of Sorrow)" (John Prine cover) comes out March 6 via Jagjaguwar. You can listen to both of those songs below.
All dates and streams below...
Move over Golden Globes, Lana Del Rey's horrible performance on Saturday Night Live (watch below) is the hot topic of the weekend. We know what Juliette Lewis, Brian Williams, and Bob Lefsetz (most random list ever) think. What's on your mind?

There are many things that have taken up residency at Williamsburg's Union Pool over the years. Jonny Corndawg. Midnight Masses. Reverend Vince Anderson. Delicious tacos. A photo booth. Coke bumps. A convenient ATM. Long restroom lines. Throw up. Sexual desperation. Regret. And most recently, a January residency by the great Endless Boogie. Anyone catch their show on January 5th? How were Complete Faggots? Did they suck?
I am beside myself to report that the next superstar to participate in Union Pool's grand tradition of residencies will be the one, the only, FRED ARMISEN (!) whose second season of Portlandia is currently underway on IFC (It airs Friday at 10/9C). HOLY!
Fred, who also has sold out live Portlandia shows coming up even sooner, will bring his show Fred Armisen's Playlist LIVE to the intimate backroom of Union Pool on three Sundays in February; February 5, February 12, and February 26 (on sale at the link).
Fred Armisen of Saturday Night Live and Portlandia will be performing a special "Fred Armisen's Playlist Live" Residency at Union Pool in Brooklyn on Sundays, February 5, 12 and 26. He recently performed the show at Other Music in New York, performing a selection of covers of his favorite bands like the Clash, Devo, the Stranglers, the Damned, Husker Du and more. During this residency, Fred will also be inviting special guests to join the bill for each show.Special Guests. It's going to be so great. SO haters... go ahead and hate. More Fred for us! And don't forget, it's easy to be a hater when nobody likes you. Hummus AHOY!
A Nicholas Fehn video, more Portlandia live dates (announced today), and other stuff, below...
Joe's final tweet...
He also appears to have posted a suicide note on his blog, titled, "If This Was Your Last Day Alive What Would You Do?" The post includes a list of things he regrets ("my inability to conquer my alcoholism"), things he would have liked to have seen happen in his life ("living in Paris or New York again"), predictions for 2012 ("sales of Mayan Calendars up for 2012, drop for 2013"), and the things he is proud of (his time at SNL and "writing the first draft of Wayne’s World with Mike Myers"). At 3 a.m. on December 24th, he Tweeted a link to the post, adding, "Godbye." He then Tweeted a link to this video, and lastly, at 3:53 a.m., he wrote: "When people tell you to "dream" to make my life better I'd say 99.9% of them have never been beaten and robbed."RIP Joe
Lana Del Rey @ Bowery Ballroom (more by Chris La Putt)
In case you had any doubt that Lana Del Ray is on her way to super-stardom, she "will make her U.S. TV debut on Saturday Night Live January 14 in advance of her new album 'Born To Die' (January 31 / Interscope)," Pitchfork says "Video Games" is the 19th best song of 2011, and her new video for "Born To Die" already has 2.5 million views on YouTube (and that's not even where it first showed up). You can up its view count below...
Robyn @ Way Out West in Sweden
Robyn was one of the highlights of the Way Out West Festival in Gothenburg, Sweden over the summer. I took a whole bunch of pictures of her performance in her home country, but never got to post them, so here they are along with videos of her performance on Saturday Night Live over the weekend (Katy Perry who she opened some shows for in the past was the host). Check them out below...

The band played Saturday Night Live on Saturday night. Videos below...
The Black Keys are releasing their new album El Camino via Nonesuch on 12/5 and will play a NYC show at a TBA venue on that same day. Stay tuned for more details and for the chance to win a pair of guaranteed entry tickets to the show (it might be free) right here on BrooklynVegan.
Meanwhile you can catch The Black Keys on Saturday Night Live this weekend (12/3) along with host Steve Buscemi, and you can stream five new songs at the band's site. They're also hitting Colbert (12/6) and Letterman (12/7) while in town.
YouTube's KidATiki wrote on Friday:
After catching the Descendents at Roseland on Friday (9/23), I walked a couple blocks to NBC Studio to see if there were any people waiting to get stand-by tickets (which doesn't guarantee entry) for tomorrow's SNL season premier with Alex Baldwin/Radiohead......first couple people started camping on Thursday. Some dedication for these hardcore fans! And you thought getting tickets from your desk at 10am today was hard. Check out the video of the campers below...
Like he did at Glastonbury and in the Basement, and like he probably will twice this week at Roseland Ballroom in NYC (and on Colbert), drummer Clive Deamer joined Radiohead during their performance on Saturday Night Live last night (9/24). Said Radiohead drummer Phil Selway back in June, "no, you're not seeing double. The doppelganger drummers are myself and Clive Deamer. Clive has long been one of my favourite drummers and so I was really excited when he agreed to perform with us. Hope you like what we've all done." Clive's credits include recording with Portishead and Roni Size, and touring with Robert Plant. Check out the two SNL videos, and some clearer screencaps, below...
"Alec Baldwin will be in some rockin' good company when he hosts Saturday Night Live for a record-breaking 16th time on Sept. 24. Grammy-winners Radiohead, who last stopped by Studio 8H in 2000 with host Kate Hudson, will help Baldwin kick off the 37th season of SNL as musical guests. Radiohead's latest record, The King of Limbs, was released back in February." [EW]Radiohead releases TKOL RMX 1234567, a double CD of all the commisioned remixes for The King of Limbs via tbd Records on October 11. Full tracklist below.
The remixes all come from the series of twelve-inch singles the band has been releasing since July. The next one, pictured above, is out August 15th.
More importantly.... Radiohead in NYC on Sept 24? A US release on Oct 11? Let's hope that means live shows too!
The Strokes played SNL. Videos below...
That's the cover art for the new Strokes record, Angles, which is being released on March 22nd via RCA records in the US, and March 21st via Rough Trade Records in the UK. The first single, "Under Cover of Darkness," which you can easily find for free if you don't have it already, is now on sale at iTunes.
On March 5th the Strokes are playing Saturday Night Live. The band is also rumored to be playing SXSW in mid-March (not long after they hit Vegas), and they are definitely playing Madison Square Garden in NYC on April 1st, and Coachella that same month, and then the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. In June they'll hit Bonnaroo.
Tickets for the MSG show go on AmEx presale via Ticketmaster on 2/18 at 9am. After fees they will set you back $68.25 each. As mentioned in the initial announcement, they go "on sale to public" on February 25th. Whether there are any other fan presales remains to be seen.
No official announcement yet on when the LCD Soundsystem Terminal 5 shows are going on sale, though they did mention it would be this week and Friday seems to make sense, but stay tuned. Bonnaroo goes on sale Saturday.
UPDATE: at around 12:30pm. the Strokes' manager tweeted a picture of the Loew's Theater in Jersey City where the band apparently is right now filming the video for "Under Cover of Darkness."
The Strokes are the cover of a new issue of NME. Check that out below...
Tonight, Friday, 1/28, Iron & Wine are playing a free show at the Apple Store in SoHo. On Monday (January 31 at 7pm), Carrie Brownstein & Fred Armisen will discuss their IFC TV show Portlandia, live, at the same location. Meanwhile you can catch Portlandia three times today on IFC, including at 10:30pm.
Carrie Brownstein's band Wild Flag is playing two now-sold-out shows in Brooklyn in March (and other dates). Catch Fred Armisen on SNL this Saturday, 1/29, with musical guest Nicki Minaj (who recently announced a tour with Lil Wayne who was on SNL not that long ago)
That picture above shows Portland band the Thermals (who play a show in Portland tonight) arriving at the Portlandia premiere party in NYC last week. The band performed at the event, though unlike some members of the Decemberists, I'm not sure if the Thermals actually get any screen time in one of the upcoming shows. Carrie Brownstein however, as you might remember, gets some screen time in the recent Thermals video for "I Don't Believe You" which is the same song the Thermals will be performing on February 1st on 'Lopez Tonight'. The song comes from the band's 5th LP Personal Life, as does the song "Never Listen to Me" which now also has a video, which you can watch with other stuff, below...
"People on the subway are staring at my scabs"
Fred Armisen, Kristen Wiig, and Jim Carrey performed as "A Taste of New York" on Saturday Night Live this past weekend (on 1/8). A Taste of New York is an "authentic" band from "an area between Avenue B & Avenue C" in New York City. And though Holy Sons are from the West Coast, we have learned that the sketch/song was inspired by new Holy Sons song "A Chapter Must Be Closed" from the recent Survivalist Tales. Fred Armisen watched the video for the song and the rest is history. Compare/contrast the videos below.
Musical duo The Black Keys also played Saturday Night Live on 1/8, a few days before they appeared on the Colbert Report with Ezra. Video of both songs they played are below too.
Musical duo Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein (ex Sleater-Kinney, current Wild Flag) go way back. Their Thunderant series of videos have been making the rounds online for years, and so it's pretty awesome that they've landed a "6-part IFC Original short-based comedy series" called Portlandia which premieres on Friday, January 21, 2011 at 10:30 PM ET/PT on IFC. "Each episode's character-based shorts draw viewers into "Portlandia," the creators' dreamy and absurd rendering of Portland, Oregon."
An assortment of guest stars inhabit PORTLANDIA, including Kyle MacLachlan (Twin Peaks, Sex & The City), Aubrey Plaza (Parks and Recreation), Selma Blair (Legally Blonde, Hellboy), Heather Graham (The Hangover), Edie McClurg (Ferris Bueller's Day Off), Kumail Nanjiani (Michael & Michael Have Issues), Jason Sudeikis (SNL, The Cleveland Show), and Gus Van Sant (Milk). Singer/songwriter Aimee Mann also guest stars, alongside James Mercer (The Shins), and local Portland musicians Jenny Conlee and Colin Meloy (The Decemberists) and Corin Tucker (Sleater-Kinney).Wild Flag is touring in March. Some very funny "Portlandia" videos, and everything else mentioned above, below...
