In the shadow of the famous and brooding Kentile Floors sign in the burgeoning and classic neighborhood of Gowanus, The Bell House, a gorgeous new and unique music venue and lounge, will open its doors on September 18 at 6pm with free admission to the public. The Bell House is a magnificent two-room music and events venue located at 149 7th Street between 2nd & 3rd Avenues. It was crafted out of an old 1920's warehouse once used as a printing press, but more recently used as a fly-by-night shipping company.Press release continued, and an updated initial lineup, below...
Conceived and created by the friends behind Union Hall (Park Slope) and Floyd (Brooklyn Heights), The Bell House are thrilled to be pioneers of sorts adding a prominent performance space to Brownstone Brooklyn. The main space boasts 25 foot wooden arched ceilings, a 450 square foot stage, and unobstructed views from any part of the room. "Brownstone Brooklyn needed a major music venue and event space, and we found a beautiful old building near the Gowanus that was seemingly designed for live music," said co-owner, Jim Carden. "We'll be able to graduate the bands we've championed at Union Hall to a space like no other in New York City and be able to host acts that were simply too big for the stage there", adds co-owner and talent buyer Jack McFadden

(Dean and) Britta
Nada Surf (acoustic), Dean & Britta, Richard Buckner, Sam Champion, Scott Matthew, Tara Angell & David Poe, Simone White and Frank Bango himself performed at the Bowery Ballroom in NYC on Tuesday night in order to raise money for Frank Bango.
Bango, who has just completed nearly two years of cancer treatments, is incredibly grateful for the generosity of The Bowery and his friends. The Bowery Ballroom has been Frank's home as a bartender, bar manager, musician and fan for almost ten years. The show started at 8 and ran until around 1 am, More pictures below....
"In 1993, Williams' life took a dramatic turn when she learned that she was suffering from multiple sclerosis. In 1993, an array of artists from different genres, including Pearl Jam, Lou Reed, Maria McKee, Soul Asylum, Lucinda Williams and others, joined together to record some of Williams' songs for a tribute/benefit project called Sweet Relief: A Benefit for Victoria Williams. This led to the creation of the Sweet Relief Fund, a charity that aids professional musicians (of any stature) in need of health care. That year, Williams also released a new album herself, entitled Loose. Pearl Jam had covered her song "Crazy Mary" for Sweet Relief, however, Williams performed her own version of the song, and made a video that brought her closer to public notice and gained her more of a following after it ran on MTV and VH1 in 1994, and is still played on both cable channels." [Wikipedia]Tonight (August 26) Victoria helps another musician in need of money to pay hospital bills. Nada Surf (acoustic), Dean & Britta, Richard Buckner, Sam Champion, Scott Matthew, Tara Angell & David Poe and Simone White are also on the bill. Tickets are still on sale. The music starts at 8:00. Expect short sets leading up to Nada Surf who are headlining.
Friends & Family,
We have set up a benefit show for our dear friend Frank Bango @ The Bowery Ballroom for Tuesday August 26th. As some of you may or may not know Frank is sick and we're going to raise some money so he can get better and pay his American doctors. If we lived in France or Cuba or Canada there would be no need for this kind of thing.
Tickets are going on sale tomorrow (7/17 at noon) and we hope you all go buy yours in advance as it will probably sell out. Frank has a million friends and we were able to nail down some impressive talent.
The Frank Bango Bone Marrowthon / Stem Cellebration Benefit with music from:

You may have heard about the fire at Pizza Plus on 7th Avenue in Park Slope (Brooklyn, NY) the other day. Those living above the pizza place have been displaced, and two of those currently-homeless people just so happen to be members of the NYC band Sam Champion (who may or may not have started the fire to gain publicity for their new album - JUST KIDDING!). I contacted their singer (and man about town) Noah Chernin, and this is what he had to say:
I live there with two other roommates, ryan, who plays drums in our band and luke schurman, an actor/musician. our bathroom and back of the apartment including luke's room are completely destroyed. ryan's room and my room were pretty much untouched, except my windows were smashed out and some smoke damage.Want to see them rock house (with TigerCity, Stylofone, the Affair, and DJ Justin Carter)? Noah is giving away TW0 PAIRS OF TICKETS to BV readers. Want them? E-mail BVCONTESTS@HOTMAIL.COM (Subject: SAM). Include your first and last name as you would like it to appear on the guestlist. Contest ends at 1pm on Tuesday (TODAY) May 15, 2007. Two winners will be picked at random and contacted.
it's still a crime scene, i think. we are slowly going back and getting our things. no instruments or gear really got damage. luke lost a bunch of writing and journals that obviously have a lot of sentimental value and can't be replaced.
we are couch surfing and living with girlfriends right now and don't think we'll be back there (if we go back) for another few months.
at this point we don't really know what our next move is...
except to ROCK HOUSE on tuesday at bowery.
MERCURY LOUNGE, NYC | MAY 28, 2006 (cred)
The schedule for this past Sunday night (May 28, 2006) at Mercury Lounge reads "CLOSED FOR PRIVATE EVENT". The event in question was Mercury Lounge talent buyer Johnny Beach's annual birthday party. Magneta Lane came all the way from Canada to play the list-only show curated by Johnny himself. Set and Setting, Love as Laughter, Sam Champion, and one of Johnny's favorite New York bands Dirty on Purpose were also on the bill.
SAID ONE ANONYMOUS ATTENDEE
Real fun night involving numerous Beach shout outs, a cake in his face, a pinata filled with candy and glass mini-bottles of tequila that (duh) mostly shattered on the ground. The show closed with a set of covers by Noah and Ryan from Sam Champion, Matt from Rana/King of France, and a guy from Love as Laughter. No Sam Champion set.
