Still from Radio Unnamable

As previously mentioned, the 2012 BAMcinemaFEST kicks off tonight (6/20) with a screening of Mike Birbiglia's Sleepwalk with Me. This year's fest includes 22 features with 20 of those being New York premieres and, as usual, there are a few music-related films as well. On June 26 they'll screen Radio Unnamable, a documentary about WBAI DJ Bob Fass, "the father of freeform radio." There will be a Q&A after the screening with Fass and directors Paul Lovelace, Jessica Wolfson. Immediately after that will be a performance in the BAMcinemaFest lounge with Simeon Coxe of Silver Apples which is free with your screening ticket.
Screening on June 28 is Tim Sutton's debut feature Pavillion, which "follows laconic teenager Max, who moves from an idyllic lakeside town in New York to his father's home in arid suburban Arizona." The score is by the Sea & Cake's Sam Prekop and Archer Prewitt, and the two will perform immediately after the screeening in the BAMcinemaFest lounge. Again, the performance is free with the ticket to the screening. This explains why Sam and Archer are performing at Mercury Lounge on June 30 too.
And the closing night (7/1) is a screening of Lotte Reiniger's dreamlike 1926 animated film The Adventures of Prince Achmed with live accompaniment by by Dublin collective 3epkano and Erik Friedlander.
The same night is a screening of documentary Rock 'N' Roll Exposed: The Photography of Bob Gruen about the legendary rock photographer which was directed by Big Audio Dynamite's Don Letts (The Punk Rock Movie, Strummerville). The screening is followed by BAMcinemaFest's closing night party.

DOWNLOAD: Laetitia Sadier - Find Me the Pulse of the Universe (MP3)

When mentioned a while back that former Stereolab member Laetitia Sadier will release her second solo album, Silencio, on July 24 via Drag City. The album features guest appearances from Sam Prekop and her former bandmate Tim Gane. That's the cover art to the album above. Laetitia just released the first track from Silencio, "Find Me the Pulse of the Universe" and you can download it at the top of this post. It's still within her sonic wheelhouse but with a tropical rhythm that gives it new flair.
No tour dates yet, but word is Sadier will tour North America this fall.

The Sea & Cake at Summerstage 2010 (more by Matthew Eisman)

It's not a full Sea & Cake show, but main men Sam Prekop and Archer Prewitt are playing together at Mercury Lounge on June 30 (tickets on sale Friday at noon). It's an early show (doors 7:30) and their only live date apart from a Sea & Cake show in the band's Chicago hometown on May 8. The Sea & Cake's most recent album was last year's The Moonlight Butterfly.
In related news, Sam Prekop guests on Laetitia Sadier's new solo album Silencio, which is out July 24 on Drag City. Also on the album is her former Stereolab cohort Tim Gane and former Zincs man James Elkington. No preview tracks or even cover art yet, but we do have a tracklisting for the album which you'll find below, along with those two Sea & Cake dates.

The Sea & Cake

The Sea & Cake will support Broken Social Scene on their upcoming trek that will see them at Rumsey Playfield in Central Park on 9/18 (tickets). The tour pairing makes perfect sense considering Sam Prekop's (The Sea & Cake) contributions on the recent BSS record, and his new LP Old Punch Card due on 9/7 via Thrill Jockey. A recent press release also states that there is a "rumored to be a split 7" between the two bands in the works". Hmm, rumors in a press release? Look for more details on that 7" soon.
In other BSS news, the band is releasing a series of remixes for their song "All To All". So far contributions from Sebastian Grainger, DJ Mom Jeans, Jojoflores, and Skeet Skeet have emerged, with more due every week. Download one contribution above, and the rest at the remix site. The video for "All To All" (the original) is viewable below.
NYC is looking like Arts & Crafts showcasing ground for the next few days, as TONIGHT (9/1) the previously discussed The Wooden Birds / Dan Mangan tour will hit The Rock Shop (the shows was moved from Union Hall), tagging Mercury Lounge two days later (tickets).
Thursday (9/2) will see recent Mexican A&C signees Chikita Violenta play Mercury Lounge with A Great Big Pile of Leaves (tickets) as part of a larger tour that includes non-NYC dates with A&C-in-Canada labelmates Ra Ra Riot (who play NYCx4 in Sept) and Built To Spill (who play NYC Thursday).
Chikita Violenta is prepping to release their forthcoming LP for A&C, TRE3S, due in early 2011. The album was recorded in Canada with former Broken Social Scene producer Dave Newfeld. An MP3 is being given away at their site.
Last but not least, Chilly Gonzales (who will be in NYC soon with Peaches) is busy helping Feist with her new album. Feist and Gonzales both appear on Jamie Lidell's new album. Chilly's new album, Ivory Tower, is out September 14th.
