You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight's shows, but here are some highlights...

Action Bronson @ Terminal 5
Chef-turned-rapper Action Bronson releases his new album, Mr Wonderful, this week and is celebrating with two big shows at Terminal 5. Tonight's sold out but you can still get tickets to Wednesday's show.

Jon Spencer Blues Explosion @ Cake Shop
The JSBX release their cracking new album Freedom Tower: No Wave Dance Party 2015 this week and are celebrating by playing shows in every borough. Tonight brings them to NYC's Cake Shop and to get tickets you need to buy the album at Other Music.

Taking Back Sunday, The Menzingers @ The Paramount
Long Island emo vets TBS released Happiness Is in 2014 which was made with the same lineup that produced 2002's Tell All Your Friends. Philly punks The Menzingers and LA's Letlive open.

A Winged Victory for the Sullen, Loscil @ Le Poisson Rouge
Ambient duo A Winged Victory for the Sullen (aka Stars of the Lid's Adam Wiltzie and pianist/composer Dustin O'Halloran) released their sophomore album, Atomos, to much acclaim last year via Kranky. They'll get LPR nice and chill tonight.

Kate Tempest, Jack Garratt @ Mercury Lounge
She's an award-winning poet and just-published novelist, but Kate Tempest is at her most immediate as a rapper, as heard on last year's very good, gritty Everybody Down. This is her first of two sold-out NYC shows this week.

Hess is More, HITS, Lily McQueen @ Mercury Lounge
The eight-piece lineup of Hess Is More bring their jazzy/krauty/funky sound to Nublu as part of a four-night residency. If you like DFA style dancerock, they're worth checking out.

Gingerlys, Baby Acid, Physical Media, Acid Dad @ Pianos
Falling somewhere between indiepop and shoegaze are Brooklyn's Gingerlys, whose debut EP is brimming with charming pop hooks.

Not Suitable For Television: An Evening of Material Rejected from Television @ Littlefield
This series brings to life TV pilot scripts that never made to filming. Tonight's reading features Janeane Garofalo, "TV's Frank" Conniff, Jena Friedman, Brandon Scott Wolf, Andrew Law, Andy Blitz, Sabrina Jalees, and Aaron Glaser.

Radiator Hospital, Nice Try, The Meltaways, Trace Mountains @ Silent Barn
Radiator Hospital -- the band fronted by former Waxahatchee member Sam Cook-Parrott and including current Swearin' drummer Jeff Bolt -- make hyper punky/strummy pop, as heard on last year's Torch Song.

Tsu Shi Ma Mi Re, Quorum, The Fin., Zarigani$, Bo-Peep, Samurai Dynamites @ Knitting Factory
This show is being billed as "Japan Night" featuring a whole bunch of groups from that country fresh from performances at SXSW.

San Cisco @ Rough Trade
Australian band San Cisco released their bright and poppy new album, Gracetown, last week and play a free record release show tonight. No wristband required.

The Wharton Tiers Ensemble, Martin Bisi, Tenterhooks, Secret Numbers @ The Rock Shop
Between the two of them, audio engineers Wharton Tiers, and Martin Bisi have worked on records by some of the biggest names in the '80s no-wave scene. They are both musicians as well, and are on the same bill this evening.

Dune Rats

Speaking of Australia, Brisbane fuzz rock duo Dune Rats (aka Danny Beus and BC Michaels), who were one of Andy from Cake Shop's "21 Amazing Experience of 2012", surfaced with two EPs in 2011, Sexy Beach and Social Atoms, and they're planning to follow that with another EP, titled Smile, and eventually a debut full length at some point this year. No exact details on those releases exist, but the band recently released a single, "Red Light, Green Light," which you can download for free at the top of this post. It's of the Wavves-y stoner/beach rock variety and you can watch the video below, which consists entirely of both members smoking a variety of bongs (and I'm pretty sure they're actually doing it).

Dune Rats will be coming to the US for a tour surrounding SXSW this March which hits NYC on March 20 at Cake Shop (other bands TBA), March 21 at Shea Stadium with The Beets, Hard Nips, Juniper Rising, and Heeney, and March 24 at Sons of Essex. A list of all dates and the tour flyer below.

Their SXSW shows include the annual Aussie BBQ, and Dune Rats are only one of many Aussie bands coming over to Austin for SXSW, including Alpine, Flume, Kirin J Callinan, WIM, and others. The full list of Australian bands that will be at SXSW is below.

Twerps / The Orwells
Twerps
The Orwells

Before BV photographer Tracy Allison made her way to the Panache showcase at Public Assembly on Friday night (10/19) during CMJ, she stopped by Pianos for the Planetary Group day party where she caught Twerps, The Orwells, and San Cisco. Twerps were over from Australia for a number of shows before and during CMJ, and they're continuing to tour North America this month and next. That show was one of a few that we caught The Orwells bringing their high-spirited young punk 'n roll (including our Saturday day party). More pictures from the Planetary party are below.

Savages

If there's any band who universally lived up to their hype at this year's CMJ, it had to be London's Savages. Everyone at BV loved them, we caught their sets at the Stereogum showcase and at our own day party. We also went over to Mercury Lounge after our Friday party (10/19) to catch them again, where they were headlining a sold out show with Choir of Young Believers, Daughter, San Cisco, and Emma Louise (who recently signed to Frenchkiss). J. Thoven was on that bill too but we missed their set. Pictures from the rest are in this post.

Meanwhile, Choir of Young Believers (who were also great at our Saturday day party) and Daughter are on a tour that hits Chicago tonight. Daughter also played the Glassnote CMJ showcase while they were in NYC.

Videos of Savages tearing it up during "Flying to Berlin" and "Husbands" at Mercury Lounge, and more pics from the show are below.

DOWNLOAD: Blessed Feathers - "Winter Sister" (MP3)

Blessed Feathers

Wisconsin folk duo Blessed Feathers released their debut EP, Ocean of Weeds, earlier this month, and you can stream the entire thing below. The EP was produced by Kevin McMahon (Titus Andronicus, Real Estate) and also features Thor Harris of Swans. You can also grab a free MP3 of one of its tracks, "Winter Sister," at the top of this post, and check out the video for another, "Holyoke/Springfield," below.

The band just landed in NYC for CMJ, and you'll have a number of chances to see them, including the free BrooklynVegan day party on Friday (10/19), where they'll play an opening set in the back room at noon.

In addition to that, they'll play the SESAC showcase at Cake Shop tonight (10/17); the Popular/MCT day party at Bowery Electric on Thursday (10/18) with GHXST, Savoir Adore, Ambassadors, Santah, and Royal Canoe; the Fred Perry Artist Lounge at Stratosphere Sound Recording Studios on Thursday with The Luyas, Poor Moon, Foxygen, Ape School, So So Glos, Slug Guts, and Bleeding Rainbow; the Planetary Group day party at Pianos on Friday (10/19) with The Orwells, The Intelligence, San Cisco, Turbo Fruits, Rah Rah, Twerps, The Trouble with Templeton, Tim Chaisson, Skipping Girl Vinegar, Elephant Stone, and Ditka; and the Bowery Presents day party at Pianos on Saturday (10/20).

A list of all Blessed Feathers dates, a flyer for their CMJ shows, EP stream, and video are below...

Local Natives

And the "special surprise guest" playing Bowery Ballroom WEDNESDAY NIGHT is.... Local Natives! The band, who are flying in from California just for this Champion-sponsored show, will be previewing material from their new album which is due in early 2013. According to their label, this is their first show of 2012. Advanced tickets are now sold out, but not many were sold to make room for CMJ badgeholders. Did you buy one before you knew who the headliner was? If so, are you satisfied now that you know? SKATERS, San Cisco, Pacific Air, and Solid Gold open the show.

Question Mark

Not a lot of big acts at CMJ this year. Bowery Ballroom still has one night empty, and their Saturday night was just filled with the announcement that Wild Nothing is playing there twice (Saturday with Braids and Sunday with Merchandise). But now comes a last minute announcement that the Wednesday night of CMJ will be headlined by "Special Surprise Guest". SKATERS, San Cisco, Pacific Air, and Solid Gold open the show which goes on sale Wednesday at noon. Would you buy a ticket to a show if you didn't know who was playing?

Action Bronson at MHOW in August (more by Ryan Muir)
Action Bronson
Paul Banks at FYF Fest 2012 (more by Debi Del Grande)
Paul Banks

Complex is throwing a big, free, multi-genre, non-CMJ party during CMJ at Brooklyn's House of Vans on October 18. The show's got two stages -- a rap and a rock stage -- with the rap stage being headlined by Action Bronson and the rock stage by Interpol frontman Paul Banks. The rest of the lineup includes The Alchemist, Ratking, Ka, Spaceghostpurrp, Savages, Savoir Adore, and a surprise special guest. RSVP is required for the free show and you must be 21+. The flier is below.

Meanwhile, you can catch Action Bronson in NYC even sooner when he plays a free show at Public Assembly on October 10, and he'll also be back for a show at Highline Ballroom on October 30 with Cypress Hill.

Paul Banks, whose tour brings him to NYC for a headlining show on November 13 at Webster Hall, will also play one of the just mentioned KEXP shows in Union Square during CMJ.

We also just mentioned that Hot Charity signees Ratking have CMJ shows scheduled including free shows at Glasslands and Mercury Lounge on October 19 and a not-free show at Glasslands on October 20.

Savages have a number of CMJ shows scheduled too. They're playing Mercury Lounge on October 19 with Choir of Young Believers, Daughter, San Cisco, Emma Louise, and J. Thoven. Advance tickets for that show are sold out but you can still try to get in with your CMJ badge. They also play the Stereogum showcase with Dum Dum Girls, Guards, Port. St Willow, IO ECHO, and Icona Pop (DJ) (tickets), and it was just announced that they'll play the free Bowery Presents day party on October 20 at Pianos with The Orwells, Foxygen, Born Ruffians, Little Green Cars, Ava Luna, J. Thoven, San Cisco, Sky Ferreira, Opossom, Murals, Zulu Pearls, and Blessed Feathers.

The flier for the Complex show and an updated list of Action Bronson and Paul Banks dates are below.
