FYF Fest 2012 - Day 1 in Pictures

...Next came the great Warpaint / Hot Snakes / Chromatics dilemma of 2012. We love Hot Snakes, but with not-to-be missed hardcore Refused closing the evening, we needed something cerebral.

We picked Warpaint, and it made all the difference. The Angeleno quartet packed the main stage area to an earnestly mind-blowing set. No joke. Stella Mozgawa's metronomically perfect drumming is infused with the right amount of personality and swagger. To say nothing of the occasionally ethereal vocals and sonically interdimensional floating guitar licks. On top of the brain high, the all-lady act Warpaint drives a bit of a body-moving groove. If it weren't for the, er, gopher pockmarked ground, we might have just laid down and vibed out or whatever. Enough people did anyways... -[LA Weekly]

The ninth annual FYF Fest happened in Los Angeles with an incredibly stacked line-up that included M83, Warpaint, The Vaselines, Sleigh Bells, Fucked Up, The Men, Redd Kross, Refused, Chromatics, Cloud Nothings and loads more. And that was just the first day. Pictures of those bands and more from Saturday (9/1) are below.

Baroness at Terminal 5 in May (more by Joe McCabe)
Baroness

Earlier this week, we posted an update from Baroness showing that things were looking upwards for the band. Unfortunately though, with two members having broken vertebrae and frontman John Baizely having a broken arm and leg, it doesn't come as much of a surprise that Baroness have in fact cancelled some of their upcoming North American tour dates, including their NYC show at House of Vans and LA's FYF Fest. They will not be replaced on the House of Vans lineup, which happens on August 29 and now just includes Turbonegro, Doomriders, and Nightbirds. This is a bummer but it makes sense that the band takes the time they need to recover, and we wish them a speedy and successful recovery!

Meanwhile, FYF Fest, which Wild Flag also dropped off of, recently expanded its lineup. It now features The Faint (who just announced they'll be reissuing Danse Macabre and touring the album), Glass Candy, King Tuff, and newcomers The Orwells. Tickets for FYF Fest are still available. The updated lineup and flier are below.

Sandro Perri
Sandro Perri

Toronto art pop musician Sandro Perri has a few dates scheduled to take place surrounding his appearance at this year's FYF Fest. They're a bit scattered at the moment so it looks like more might be revealed, but we know that one of them is a NYC show which happens on September 20 at Mercury Lounge. Tickets for that show are on sale now. All currently known dates are listed below.

Sandro Perri is also one of the many musicians being featured on the new Arthur Russell tribute album, This Is How We Walk on the Moon, that AIDS organization Red Hot (who are also responsible for Dark Was the Night, Red Hot + Rio and many other compilations) and Pitchfork are putting out. Sandro will join Robyn, Cut Copy, Hot Chip, Dan Boeckner, Twin Shadow, Washed Out, Laurel Halo, Sam Amidon, Devendra Banhart, Olof Arnalds, Jose Gonzalez, Thao with the Get Down Stay Down, Chad VanGaalen, Glen Hansard, and many others for the album. The project is being funded on kickstarter. The Kickstarter video and a list of all participating artists is below.

Earlier this year, DFA put out a remix 12" of material from Sandro's 2011 LP, Impossible Spaces. The stream of Eluvium's remix of "Changes," a list of all currently known Sandro Perri dates, and the Arthur Russell tribute info are below.

WOW.

Quicksand recently reunited at Revelation Records' 25th Anniversary on the West Coast, and I would't be surprised if they do the same at Irving Plaza in October.

Destroyer at Webster Hall in 2011 (more by Amanda Hatfield
Destroyer

As mentioned, Destroyer will hit the road next month for a North American tour which comes to NYC on June 18 at Brooklyn Masonic Temple and June 19 at Le Poisson Rouge. When we first discussed those shows, no openers had been announced yet, but openers for both shows have since been revealed.

Sandro Perri (who we we profiled HERE) will join Destroyer on most of the tour, including the Brooklyn Masonic Temple show. Tickets for that show are still available.

Meanwhile, the LPR show will be opened by Drag City-signed Sophia Knapp. Tickets for that show are still available. That show is one of a few Sophia will be playing this June, including another NYC show which happens at Knitting Factory on June 28. Tickets for that show are on sale now.

Sandro Perri
Sandro Perri

Toronto art popper Sandro Perri spent the first half of the last decade recording under the moniker Polmo Polpo and the second half under his own name. He's also been a member/collaborator of Great Lake Swimmers (who recently announced an album and tour), Detective Kalita, Barzin, Dot Wiggin, Glissandro 70, Double Suicide, and Continuous Dick. He's been getting increased attention lately after the release of his 2011 LP, Impossible Spaces, which ended up on Pitchfork's top 50 albums of the year. The album brings together sunny art pop, folk, and touches of world music. You can stream the entire thing below.

Sandro Perri has a few shows coming up including the MusicNOW Festival in Cincinnati (3/29) and a NYC show happening two days later at Mercury Lounge on March 31 with Bhi Bhiman before he hooks up with Metronomy for a few dates on their upcoming tour. Tickets for the Mercury Lounge show go on sale Friday (2/17) at noon with an AmEx presale starting today (2/15) at noon.

He's not currently listed on Metronomy's NYC show which happens on March 30 at Irving Plaza (Friends are though) but it looks like he'll open Metronomy's Chicago show which currently lists a "guest" but it falls right in between Perri opening their Toronto show and their Minneapolis show. Tickets for the Irving Plaza show are still on sale.

All dates and album stream below...
