"First came the rain on Friday, then the heat on Saturday. But Lollapalooza breeds a hearty stock, so with slip 'n slides, togas and giant Chinese peasant hats in tow, out came the 70,000-plus for another day of music that was capped by fill-in headliners the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and doomy metal icons Tool.

Taking the place of the Beastie Boys, who had to drop out several weeks ago due to MC Adam Yauch's bout with cancer of the salivary gland, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs brought their always-colorful A-game, led, as usual, by fashion-forward singer Karen O, who took the stage in a kaleidoscopic, towering bird costume. Down on the south end, things couldn't have looked and sounded any more different, as Tool singer Maynard James Keenan stripped down to a pair of black workout shorts and moaned the lyrics to his band's turgid D&D metal as giant H.R. Giger-like images of giant bugs and morphing aliens were projected on the big screens." [MTV]

No that isn't an All Points West review. More pictures from the second day of this year's Lollapalooza festival, below...

Major Lazer

"On Saturday, June 13th Major Lazer (featuring Diplo and Switch) starts its international Tour of Duty at SOBs.

Major Lazer features legendary DJs Diplo and Switch, both renowned for their ability to get crowds dancing in high-energy and original shows. Diplo, known for his forward-thinking productions for artists such as MIA and Bonde Do Role, incorporates such disparate influences as Miami Bass and Baile Funk into his high-tech, eclectic sound. Switch is loved by critics and dancers alike, and is a leader among DJs. He recently contributed to Santigolds self-titled album to rave reviews. Together they've produced the first LP from Major Lazer, Guns Dont Kill People Lazers Do, set to drop June 16th.

Major Lazer draws from the rich dancehall tradition of Jamaica, and the futuristic dance-floor-killing aesthetic of Diplo and Switch. The sound is the result of global pop culture run through the filter of Major Lazers particular brand of 80s-inspired digital dancehall; it is at once an homage to a bygone era and a look to the future of dance music.

The story of Major Lazer is an interesting one. He has been described as a Jamaican commando who lost his arm in the secret Zombie War of 1984. He fights vampires and various monsters, parties hard, and has a rocket powered skateboard. He has enlisted the help of long-time allies and uber-producers, Diplo and Switch, to produce his first LP.

Combining the worlds best dance music to create a mix of sounds like you've never heard before, Major Lazer will surely start the tour off right on Saturday, June 13th. The set at SOBs will represent the best of many different musical influences that all share one important feature: the ability to get the dance party started."

That's how SOB's describes the show. I think it covers all the major points. Tickets for the NYC show are on sale. MP3 above. All dates and videos (including live from SXSW) below...

Santigold is playing a benefit on Friday, May 1st at The Jane (113 Jane St). Her set is part of a fund-raiser for non-profit The Art of Elysium. According to the flyer (below), tickets run a $100 donation.

Today, Wednesday, April 29th at 2pm, Santigold will be appearing with Lou Reed and others at the WNYC's new Greene Space venue for a live broadcast of that station's Soundcheck program . That event, like the inaugural concert April 28th, is invitation-only. Both shows will be streaming live at the Greene Space's website though, and on WNYC 93.9 FM.

Santi has a whole slew of summer fest appearances coming up. Those include May 25th at Sasquatch! Festival, the Roots Picnic in Philly on June 6th, Bonnaroo on June 12th, a stretch of European fests & shows in July/August, and Lollapalooza on August 7th.

Her own headlining show at Terminal 5 with Amanda Blank and Trouble Andrew on Tuesday, June 9th appears to be sold out.

All updated Santigold tour dates, with Art of Elysium benefit flyer, below...

"Though promoters around the country report strong early ticket sales for festivals and summer tours, the recession is causing jitters. This year Coachella, which has the most glamorous reputation of all American festivals, began selling tickets on layaway, and 18 percent of its customers took that option, Mr. Tollett said.

The proliferation of big festivals, like Bonnaroo near Nashville and Lollapalooza in Chicago, has not been without casualties. This year Langerado in Miami shut down, citing the economy. The Pemberton Festival in British Columbia is on hiatus after only one year, although its promoter, Live Nation, said the problem was permit delays." [NY Times]

With all the leaks of bands playing Lollapalooza this year, there are almost no surprises in the official lineup announcement, except maybe the Animal Collective DJ set... The whole thing below...

Greene SpaceOn Tuesday, April 28th, NYC public radio station WNYC will open the Greene Space, a new street-level venue on the corner of Varick and Charlton Streets in lower Manhattan. The space's inaugural 10-day festival kicks off the same day."Information about ticketing is forthcoming."

As Variety points out, the ground-floor venue will be "something of a downtown version of Rockefeller Center's "Today" show setup (minus the Al Roker groupies)."

"The Greene Space perfectly expresses WNYC's impulse to continue to innovate public radio and inspire people in new ways," said Laura Walker, WNYC President and CEO. "As we produce live events and audio and video programming streetside on Varick Street, we love the fact New Yorkers will be able to see our hosts in action, participate in political dialogues, and enjoy cultural performances. We become a part of the New York City and Hudson Square community in a tangible, visible way. WNYC has tremendous assets: its people, its ethos, its technology, its listeners and the city itself. Finally we have a way to combine them all."
Scheduled programs for the opening week and a half include Lou Reed, Santigold, and string quartet ETHEL appearing on the station's Soundcheck program on Wednesday, April 29 (2-3pm).

The same day, WNYC will host an "audio theater" presentation of H.G. Wells's The Invisible Man from 7-9pm. In the production, "Michael Riesman, Director of the Philip Glass Ensemble, will give a rare live musical performance on piano, blending music from multiple Philip Glass compositions and live improvisation into a never-before-heard piece."

One regular program to be held in the space will be "Evening Music LIVE with Terrance McKnight and David Garland," whose scheduled guests include "Simone Dinnerstein, Renè Pape, Gabriella Montero, John Zorn, Nico Muhly, Elliott Sharp, Jason Moran, Don Byron and Ute Lemper, among others."

For the space's "First 'First Friday'" on Friday, May 1st, WNYC is partnering with neighbor Sounds of Brazil (SOBs) for a "Cinco de Mayo on El Primero de Mayo" fest with food, music and dancing.

Santigold show @ Irving Plaza (more by Kyle Dean Reinford)

"Santigold will take her endless dance party across the US one more time this spring before heading back into the studio to record the follow up to her smash self-titled debut. Santigold will be performing with a full band and dancers for the first time in North America to bring her genre-blending sound to life. Virgin Records artist Trouble Andrew, who can be heard on the Santigold track "I'm A Lady," along with Downtown Records' singer/mc Amanda Blank will be the openers." [PR]
As already mentioned, the NYC show will take place at Terminal 5 on June 9th. Tickets are now on sale.

Not part of the tour is Santigold's upcoming appearance at the new Topshop store opening in SoHo. According to NY Mag, Mark Ronson and Lady Gaga will also be there on April 1st, the day before the store on Broadway and Broome officially opens. And there will be deejays...

"It's always nice to have tunes while you're shopping your latest look. It's even nicer when they're played by LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy, Justine D, The Whip and other surprise acts. With DJs on hand throughout the opening week, tapping your toe is inevitable. Make sure you check out the instore schedule to see who is spinning the decks daily." [TOPSHOP]
One of the surprise acts is Kim of Matt & Kim who's spinning on Sunday, April 5th.

UPDATE: Here's the whole DJ (I think just DJ) schedule:

Top Shop

"Fashionable UK clothing stores Topshop and Topman are opening their first American outpost here in New York City, on Thursday, April 2, and EVR is the first to announce the lineup at their grand opening event. EVR's own Andrew Andrew and Cassie and Harley will be there along with The Rapture, Kid Sister, Misshapes, LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy and many more. Located at the corner of Broadway and Broome Street, Topshop and Topman are a celebration of downtown fashion, music, and culture, and East Village Radio is proud to be their radio partner."
The Whip will be in town as part of their tour with Late of the Pier (who are also on the DJ bill as you can now see above). All Santigold tour dates below...

Santigold (then known as Santogold) @ Irving Plaza (more by Kyle Dean Reinford)

"Conan O'Brien is being lured by University of South Carolina honor students to make an on-campus appearance to receive their "Cocky Award" (named after the school's Gamecock mascot) in honor of his Bud Light Super Bowl ad, in which the comedian sported bunny ears and spoke in a Swedish accent. Daniel Boulud enjoyed the oysters at The Four Seasons Bar Room, while Robert Morgenthau, Jack Rudin, and Edgar Bronfman Sr. lunched nearby. Kate Moss is expected to hit up NYC on April 1 for the opening of Topshop on Broadway and Broome, celebrating with performances by Mark Ronson, Santigold, and Lady Gaga. Wild child Katy Perry likes kissing boys too. She's dating decidedly un-wild singer Josh Groban." [NY Magazine]

Santigold, fresh off a Vermont appearance at the US Open, has a few big shows coming up - two of which are in NYC. The first happens next Wednesday at the new Topshop store (see above). The next is a headlining show at Terminal 5 on June 9th with openers Amanda Blank and Trouble Andrew. $25 tickets for that one go on sale Thursday at noon.

You can also catch Santigold at this year's Ultra Music Festival in Miami (this weekend), Sasquatch Festival, Roots Picnic, and Bonnaroo. All dates below...

Jane's Addiction

Live Nation and Adam Zacks are pleased to announce this year's line up for the Sasquatch! Music Festival at the legendary Gorge in Eastern Washington. The festival, now in its eighth and most ambitious year yet, has evolved from a unique, homegrown & low key fest into a full blown three day extravaganza. The tent will feature performances from comedians throughout the day, and then come dusk, will spotlight electronic and dance music artists.

What's My Muthafuckin Name?

Change the graffiti on the bathroom wall, get your tattoo fixed, get your t-shirt airbrushed and change the name on your year end list- Santogold is now Santigold. She's not telling you why, that's just how it is. No unpronounceable symbol, no numbers where they shouldn't be, no random capitalization, just plain ass Santigold so remember that.

Downtown/Lizard King released Santigold's self-titled breakthrough CD in April and it instantly became one of 2008's most acclaimed albums garnering international raves. Critics and radio have championed the record's standout tracks "L.E.S. Artistes", "Creator" and her latest single "Shove It".

I can guess why.
