High on Fire at Fun Fun Fun Fest (more by BBG)
High on Fire

March 16th, March 16th, March 16th! If you're going to be in Austin, save the date on your calendar folks! On Friday March 16th, 2012 at Scoot Inn (1308 e4th St), BrooklynVegan, The Power of The Riff, and Southern Lord will combine forces for a MARATHON of events that kickoff at noon and end waaaaay after the sun goes down.

The FREE daytime portion, in conjunction with the four-day Thrasher/Converse "Death Match" event at the venue, is an all-ages shindig that will kick off at noon and feature a skateramp with skaters and bands all day long. Shortly after doors open, expect to see eleven bands across two stages including sets from the following:

March 16, 2012 @ Scoot Inn, Austin, TX (noon-6pm)
* High on Fire
* Off!
* Trash Talk
* Black Cobra
* Ceremony
* Deafheaven
* Full of Hell
* Heartless
* Balaclava
* Dead in The Dirt
* DNF (members of Trash Talk, Touche Amore)
That's right... High on Fire AND Off! AND Trash Talk (playing their FOURTH year of SXSW shows with us) AND Black Cobra AND Ceremony all in the same space, not to mention the awesome undercard of bands like Deafheaven (playing their second year of SXSW shows with BV), new favorites Full of Hell, Balaclava, Heartless and Dead in The Dirt. It is going to be insane, so bring a hard hat.

As the day show comes to a close, we'll get ready for our night show at the same venue... amounting to a total of FOURTEEN HOURS of destruction! Not to mention the food trucks, a full bar, and so much more to keep you fed and hydrated (or buzzed, depending on your poison) during the onslaught. Stay tuned to BrooklynVegan for details regarding the official night showcase, and for more about the day show, including set times. In the meantime, head below for video of some of the bands playing our MEGA-show at Scoot Inn on March 16th!

Butthole Surfers @ The Scoot Inn
Butthole

"The idea of Butthole Surfers performing Locust Abortion Technician in its entirety was a curious one, I thought, when I first saw the announcement. I listened to the album carefully and wondered how they were going to pull it off with all that electronica and distortion and sampling and mixing, without it seeming like they were just playing a recording. Few of the songs are melodic tunes that are probably easier to recreate in a live show. It's a great album, but I just had trouble picturing it. It could have been a disaster if they hadn't prepared so well. And prepare they did. It was clear how hard they were working up there to pull off the performance, professionally and technically, and I for one truly appreciated the effort they made.

Turns out that playing this album was a genius idea, executed perfectly. It was clear that not only had they been rehearsing, but they orchestrated the songs with a fresh spin. They played the entire album in one long, continuous exhale that gave a shape to the over-arching themes of the music in a way that isn't immediately apparent when you listen to the album." [Gibby n Me]

Butthole Surfers played two shows at The Scoot Inn in their official hometown in late October. October 29th's Austin show was advertised as "1st set - Locust Abortion Technician; 2nd set - everything else", and then they played on Halloween with Meat Puppets.

Now it's NYC's turn. And though there's no word on whether they'll perform an album, Butthole Surfers will play two holiday shows at one Brooklyn venue. Tickets go on sale Tuesday, 11/23, at noon for December 30th at Music Hall of Williamsburg ($35), and December 31st (New Years Eve) ($55). Openers TBA.

Meanwhile go check out some art by Brooklyn resident Gibby Haynes at Kidd Yellin in Red Hook (not far from where he currently resides).

Much like looking at the schedule of free stuff going on today for "Make Music New York", I totally procrastinated posting these pictures of Best Fwends playing my show at the Red Scoot Inn during SXSW (March 15, 2007)....

Best Fwends

I can't say exactly why, but I loved them. They hit play on an iPod or something, and then jump around like maniacs singing to the songs they wrote. They look and act nuts, and they're really a lot of fun unless you don't think they're fun like my own best fwend who was standing next to me at the show and thought they were like Beavis & Butthead (in a bad way), and was pretty much embarrassed for herself to even be standing there in front of them at all. I wished they kept playing after they stopped.

VICE also had some not-nice stuff to say about them, but Gorilla Vs. Bear has been known to say nice things on their behalf.

So, maybe you'll love them, or maybe you'll hate them, but either way you can find out for free if you happen to be in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn today (June 21, 2007) when they play an incredible free show w/ the incredible Oxford Collapse (also BV show veterans), and Cheeseburger - who I'll even admit to liking sometimes.
