Corrections House at Saint Vitus in January (more by Caroline Harrison)
Corrections House

Corrections House, featuring an all-star lineup of Scott Kelly (Neurosis), Mike IX Williams (Eyehategod), Sanford Parker (no longer Nachtmystium) and Bruce Lamont (Yakuza, Bloodiest), have a new video for "Grin With a Purpose" the A-Side of a 7" that includes the previously discussed "Hoax the System" track which also spawned a video. The 7" is currently available via War Crime Recordings, and will be a taste for what's to come... a planned full length due at the end of the year.

So far touring is light for Corrections House in 2013, but the band is planning a trip to the EU in December, with North American dates to follow in the new year. The tour will be their second trek, following their recent jaunt in January.

Check out both Corrections House videos below.

Steve Von Till with Neurosis at Maryland Deathfest 2011 (more by BBG)
Steve Von Till

As discussed previously, three titans of metal have combined forces for the unlikely cause of a tribute album. Wino (Saint Vitus, The Obsessed, many more), Scott Kelly and Steve Von Till (both of Neurosis) all tackle Songs of Townes Van Zandt, a collection of covers available via Neurot Recordings now. Stream Scott Kelly's rendition of "St. John, the Gambler" as well as Steve Von Till's "Black Crow Blues" below, the latter of which is making its first public appearance here.

Eugene Robinson at Europa (more by BBG)
Oxbow

Scott Kelly (Neurosis) is currently touring the West Coast, but will make his way East for a string of dates with the great Eugene Robinson (Oxbow) that will include a stop at Knitting Factory on March 4th. Tickets go on sale at 10AM on 12/10 (Saturday).

In related news, Relapse Records will reissue Neurosis' classic Souls At Zero and Enemy Of The Sun LPs on 180 2LP sets (color and black). Pre-order yours.

Scott Kelly

The Aquarian: What do you have coming out this year?

Wino: ...Premonition, this band I've been working with for... Well, I've known the one guy for 20 years and we never did anything, finally decided to make a record. And they liked the demos, so they said they'd put it out. We did a single, and we're right in the process right now of mixing a full-length.

Are Shrinebuilder going to do another record this year?

Wino: Yeah, we are. We're starting to get the songs ready. The songs are written. That's one good thing that came out of that volcano, actually. We couldn't get over to Europe, and it's the only time we all had together, so we all went to L.A., to the rehearsal room, and basically fleshed out the record. We played one part of it on this last tour we did, but yeah. It's gonna be cool. It's gonna be heavy as hell.

Actually, it's fucking really fucking heavy. Kelly's writing some amazing stuff, and we're all collaborating. He's a great guitar player. He won't tell you that he is, but he's a great guitar player. He may not be Yngwie Malmsteen but he knows the power of a song and delivery for sure.

Scott Kelly, Wino (and Scott Kelly with Wino) were the main attractions at Saturday's Mercury Lounge show (2/12), as the Neurosis/Saint Vitus frontmen each played respective sets before collaborating on stage together. The pair of underground legends were joined by NYC folk faves Man's Gin (who covered Cobalt's "Dry Body"!), and Hunter Hunt-Hendrix of Liturgy who started the show.

Both Man's Gin and Liturgy have shows next week: Man's Gin plays Union Pool on 2/23 with Religious To Damn, Greg Peterson (Batillus), and Oscar Albis Rodriguez (GHOST ROBOT NINJA BEAR, ex-Nakatomi Plaza) and Liturgy plays 285 Kent Ave on 2/25 with Talk Normal.

More pictures from Mercury Lounge are below, including some video of Scott Kelly, Wino, the collaboration, and Man's Gin's cover of "Dry Body"...

Scott Kelly @ Viper Room
Scott Kelly

Two greats of the heavy underground kicked off their unplugged tour together at The Viper Room in Los Angeles on Feb 5th (pictures from that show adorn this post). The trek is a short one. Wino and Scott Kelly (Neurosis) will play Baltimore's Sonar tonight (2/11) before closing up shop in NYC at Mercury Lounge on 2/12 with Man's Gin and Hunter of Liturgy. Tickets are still available or you can try your luck at winning a pair below.

If you're looking for something with a little bit more crunch, dont forget that Doomriders will team up with Sweet Cobra and Unearthly Trance to play Union Pool that same night. Though advanced tickets are no longer available, the show is not sold out. Doors are at 9PM and will cost you $12, or you can try to win one of two pairs below.

More pictures from the Viper Room in LA, which clearly show that the two greats collaborated on stage, and details on how to win tickets, below...

2 of these men will share a stage in the New Year (more)
Shrinebuilder

Before you really do the math, the idea is staggering: one member of Neurosis, one member of Saint Vitus, half of Shrinebuilder, one member of The Hidden Hand, and one member of Place of Skulls will all bless one stage. Of course the above lineup is really just projects associated with two men, Scott Kelly & Scott "Wino" Weinrich, and they will hit the road for a string of acoustic dates in the new year including Mercury Lounge in NYC on February 10th with Man's Gin. Tickets go on AMEX presale on Wednesday, 12/8 at noon, with regular sale hitting at noon on Friday.

Besides these acoustic-only dates, Wino has only one show on his calendar and that's with Scott Kelly at Roadburn 2011 as part of Shrinebulder. Scott Kelly has plenty of other dates though, as Neurosis will play shows on the West Coast around the New Year and are also scheduled to play Maryland Deathfest 2011. All tour dates are below.

Neurosis played ATP's The Nightmare before Christmas over the weekend along with the reunited Godspeed You! Black Emperor. It was Godspeed's first reunion show and it went on despite concerns about the weather. NYC has to wait until March, but we get five shows. Updated dates below.

Video from ATP (of both bands) and all tour dates below.

Om in Brooklyn 9/23/08
om

On September 8th, Drag City will proclaim that God is Good. The duo of Al Cisneros (who recently played his final show in Sleep) and Emil Amos (also of Grails/Holy Sons) will release their new four track LP of that name, their first LP together and the first Om LP since 2007's Pilgrimage. More details on the Steve Albini-produced album to come.

Transmissions in SinaiIn addition to the new Om album, Al Cisneros has also helmed a new compilation for Arthur Magazine. Entitled Transmissions from Sinai and featuring art from the legendary Arik Roper, the disc contains contributions from some of the usual Cisneros suspects (Current 93, Scott Kelly, Holy Sons, Grails, Wino) as well as previously unreleased tracks from J. Mascis, Six Organs of Admittance, Lichens, and Sir Richard Bishop. The full tracklisting is below. For more information and to order that disc, head to Arthur.

A few contributors to Transmissions From Sinai will be in NYC in the VERY near future! Lichens has a show at Cake Shop on June 15th with New Zealand's Bachelorette and Pikelet.

     Sir Richard Bishop
Sir Richard Bishop

Arthur CD contributor, Sun City Girl, and Om's Drag City label-mate, Sir Richard Bishop double teams NYC in the coming days, with a show on June 13th at The Studio @ Webster Hall with Zaimph, and then two nights later with Bill Callahan (and a BV photo show) at MHOW. Sir Richard Bishop's new album THE FREAK OF ARABY was released by Drag City in May. All of his tour dates are below.

Om's previously mentioned live document, Live Conference, will be released (vinyl only!) via Important Records in the coming weeks.

Current 93 recently dropped Aleph at Hallucinatory Mountain, as well as Monohallucinatory Mountain, the mono version of said record. Pick that up at David Michael Tibet's site. Spanning eight tracks over it's 53+ minutes, the LP features contributions from James Blackshaw, William Breeze (ex-Coil), Ossian Breeze (Coil), Rickie Lee Jones, Matt Sweeney, Andrew WK, Sasha Grey, and many many others.

Holy Sons (aka Emil Amos of Om / Grails) recently dropped Drifter's Symphony

Grouper recently toured with Animal Collective, and has a few additional tour dates in the Northwest laid out through the summer.

All tour dates and stuff below...

"So I have to be guarded in a way and kinda prepare myself for what's gonna happen, because when it happens, I don't even know."

Scott Kelly

From their crust punk origins of more than twenty years ago, Scott Kelly and Neurosis have forged their own path with searing imperial riffery and singular artistic vision. Over the course of nine LPs including 2007's critically acclaimed Given To The Rising, Neurosis's firebrand mix of hardcore, metal, psychedelia, and all-of-the-above has inspired fans and musicians alike, giving way to sub-genres and sub-sub-genres based on their compelling, emotive songwriting.

Outside of Neurosis, Scott Kelly has took on additional projects like Blood & Time, Tribes of Neurot, solo recordings, his online radio station Combat Music Radio, and Neurot Recordings. In addition, Kelly announced his involvement in Shrinebuilder, an underground metal supergroup featuring Scott "Wino" Weinrich, Al Cisneros (Om, Sleep), and Dale Crover (Melvins).

With Roadburn 2009 going down this weekend in Tilburg and Neurosis on board to curate Beyond The Pale, we sat down with Scott Kelly in March to discuss Neurosis, the making of Shrinebuilder's debut LP, and why children's mobiles should come installed with music box versions of Lunar Womb!

====

Where are you exactly in the process as far as Shrinebuilder is concerned? I know you provided recent updates on your blog, but since then, how's it coming along?

We are basically in the same spot we were... Not finished mixing yet, artwork's not done yet, but getting closer on both. Wino ended up doing an extra day of guitar in Baltimore about ten days after he did the initial recording and Dale's done a little bit of percussion overdubs and we've been kinda dialing in each song a little at a time. Its actually really close to a final mix. Al is recording the new Om album in Chicago, so when he gets done he'll be in there with those guys. I'd expect to have it all mixed probably within a couple weeks... it's really close.

Scott Kelly of Neurosis on stage with Mastodon
Mastodon

SCION ROCK FEST OUTDOOR STAGE (2/28)
1:00-1:40pm Kylesa
2:00-2:40pm Torche
3:00-3:40pm Baroness
4:00-4:50pm Boris
5:10-5:40pm Pig Destroyer
6:00-7:00pm High On Fire
7:30pm-9:00pm Neurosis
9:30pm-11:00pm Mastodon
Mastodon played the Scion Rock Fest in Atlanta on Saturday (2/28). Their set included three new jams including the single "Divinations" (which has a newly released video below) as well as some old favorites like "The Wolf Is Loose", "March of The Fire Ants", "Iron Tusk", and "Colony of Birchmen" (unconfirmed set list from 2/28 below). Unlike in Brooklyn last year, Mastodon went on after Neurosis who are a hard act to follow, so Mastodon followed the proverb "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" and invited Scott Kelly of Neurosis on stage to perform their last three songs with them.

Mastodon is scheduled to play two nights in NYC in May, as part of their tour where they'll be performing the entire Crack The Skye album. The NY dates are May 9th at Irving Plaza (on sale Saturday at noon) and May 10th at Music Hall of Williamsburg (on sale Saturday at noon).

Along for the ride is Kylesa and Intronaut, both of whom had to drop off the previously mentioned tour with The Haunted and Nachtmystium (tickets for that BB Kings show on April 19th are here - The Agonist and Merauder are the new openers)
(not sure what the deal on refunds is).

New video, and more Scion pics and the setlist, below...

Mastodon @ Scion Rock Fest - Feb 28, 2009 (by Michael Woodruff)
Mastodon

Less than 36 hours after Mastodon left the stage at Scion Rock Fest where they played a few tunes with Scott Kelly of Neurosis (!!!), the band announced a tour that includes a NYC date at Irving Plaza (May 9th, tickets on sale soon) and a Brooklyn show at Music Hall of Williamsburg (May 10th, presale starts Wedesday). All dates will include Kylesa (who was also at Scion) AND Intronaut. Both openers will be coming off of their tour with The Haunted and Nachtmystium.

MastodonDuring the April & May North American trek, the Atlanta crew will play all of their upcoming album Crack The Skye (out March 24):

The complete album performance is something new for the group, says guitarist Bill Kelliher, but "there's something about [the album] where it would be weird to leave a song out. We'll incorporate a whole stage show, which will hopefully make it even more exciting for kids to come see and more visually stimulating." The band is also hoping to make a short movie from all the songs, which Kelliher predicts will be Mastodon's version of "The Wall." -[Billboard]
Word is that the band have employed Josh Graham to incorporate visuals into their stage show, similar to Neurosis and A Storm of Light's projection show. Billboard also got more of a straight story on the record's concept
"It's about a crippled young man who experiments with astral travel. He goes up into outer space, goes too close to the sun, gets his golden umbilical cord burned off, flies into a wormhole, is thrust into the spirit real, has conversations with spirits about the fact that he's not really dead, and they decide to help him. They put him into a divination that's being performed by an early-20th-century Russian Orthodox sect called the Klisti, which Rasputin is part of.

"Knowing Rasputin is about to be murdered, they put the young boy's spirit inside of Rasputin. Rasputin goes to usurp the throne of the czar and is murdered by the Yusupovs, and the boy and Rasputin fly out of Rasputin's body up through the crack in the sky and head back. Rasputin gets him safely back into his body."

"That's the basic story," he [Brann Dailor] says, "but it's all metaphors for personal sh*t."

Oh word? See if you can decipher more at the Crack The Skye website.

Tickets are still available for the April 19th BB Kings show with The Haunted, Nachtmystium, Kylesa, & Intronaut.

A Storm Of Light recently played Europa with Amenra & Zoroaster.

All Mastodon shows go on pre-sale on Wednesday (password = CracktheSkye), and then regular sale Friday. All dates on this "intimate" tour are below...

Neurosis LIVE @ Fury Fest
Neurosis

Neurot Recordings have confirmed that Scott Kelly and Steve Von Till are working on new Neurosis material, the follow-up to 2007's mammoth Given To The Rising! No word on when that material will surface, but with a little luck, maybe we'll see it in Neurot's 10th anniversary year (2009).

Neurot have also announced plans for In a Dark Tongue by Harvestman (aka Steve Von Till), a new Skullflower (due in March or April), as well as a new record by The Chord featuring members of Pelican.

The Chord currently have a single date laid out in their native Chi-town, at the Empty Bottle on 1/27 with A Tundra and Bruce Lamont (Yakuza) & Michael Zerang (tix here).

In addition, Neurot dropped a wee bit of Shrinebuilder news....

The band will be in the studio with Toshi [Kasai, Big Business] from January 9th through January 11th. Shrinebuilder's debut full-length, currently self-titled, is set for a summer 2009 release on Neurot Recordings.

Scott Kelly has announced that he will report live from the studio via [his blog] beginning no later than Saturday, January 10th. Look for guest blogs by other members of Shrinebuilder as well as possible in-studio photos from the band.

Wino added:
Yesterday we visited the gear catacomb where we exhumed some vintage gear for the recording including: Two seventies silver{gray} label Sunn model T's (which I immediately set upon replacing the existing preamp tubes with secret ones), a vintage Matamp, an Orange OD IOO, Roland space echo, various cabinets etc.
In case we haven't beat it into your skull already over the past year, Shrinebuilder is Wino (St. Vitus, Hidden Hand, The Obsessed), Scott Kelly (Neurosis), Al Cisneros (Om, Sleep), and Dale Crover (Melvins).

Al Cisneros of Om/Shrinebuilder sat down for an interview with us during ATP and after Sleep announced their reformation.

Wino has a new record due next week entitled Punctuated Equilibrium.

Neurosis, Skullflower, Om, Harvestman, and a ridiculous amount of others will soon descend upon the sold-out Roadburn.

Neurosis, A Storm of Light, and many, many others will also be at the Scion Rock Fest in Atlanta on February 28th.

Scott Kelly, Live @ Roadburn

Neurosis's frontmen, Scott Kelly and Steve Von Till, both have new solo records on deck which have had their release dates pushed back to May 20th (The Wake and A Grave Is A Grim Horse respectively). As a consolation, Neurot dropped a little preview for us in the form of the MP3s above.

Scott Kelly is currently working on the new Blood & Time record, as well as Shrinebuilder with Wino (St. Vitus, Hidden Hand, etc), Dale Crover (Melvins), and Al Cisneros (who has a new drummer in Om) which is due in 2009 on Neurot. Combat Music Radio is also still going strong. Steve Von Till is working on a Limited Edition release of his Harvestman soundtrack to the film "Hate2O". Both are writing new music for Neurosis and Tribes of Neurot.

VBS.tv recently released video from the Neurosis show at Brooklyn Masonic Temple, and although it is nowhere near the majesty of their live show, check out Neurosis battling their way through "The Doorway"...

First up, a new solo album from the mighty Scott Kelly, who will release The Wake on May 5th, his first release in the seven years since his debut Spirit Bound Flesh. Two weeks later, the world's most intense elementary school teacher Steve Von Till drops A Grave is a Grim Horse, his first non-Harvestman release in six years (Harvestman recently collabo'd with Fear Falls Burning). More details on A Grave Is A Grim Horse can be found here. The third we knew about, but has now gone official: A Storm Of Light's debut And We Wept the Black Ocean Within will be released on June 2nd. Read our recent interview with Josh Graham here.
