Robert Ellis / Technicolor Hearts/ Shakey Graves

BV Austin, in partnership with The Convoy Group, Regressive Records, Eye in the Sky Collective, Tito's Handmade Vodka, and Mercy hangover prevention, presented a CMJ showcase of Texas bands on Thursday night at Rebel NYC. Here are some pictures from the shindig. They continue below...

Alejandro Rose-Garcia is probably most recognized as "The Swede" responsible for luring Julie's heart on the second season of Friday Night Lights. This is convenient because his one-man band Shakey Graves is proudly, unarguably Texan. Texas forever, they say. His fingerpicking and stomps take on the grizzled weight of the Old West, but they can also expand into balladry aligned with (true Swede) The Tallest Man on Earth. In either scenario, he's a fierce contrast to all the digitally driven bands showing up at CMJ in spades. [The L Magazine]Austin's Shakey Graves (aka Alejandro Rose-Garcia) is in NYC this week for CMJ and played a couple shows already, including one with Laura Stevenson and the Cans. His last show is tonight at our Texas Takeover Party, which happens at Rebel NYC (10/18) (5 PM doors) and is being presented by our BV Austin site. Admission is free with RSVP and drinks are free while they last too. The rest of the lineup features Robert Ellis, Grandfather Child, Wild Child, The Tontons, New York City Queens, Josiah Hall, and Technicolor Hearts.
Shakey Graves recently filmed a live video for "Roll The Bones," which you can watch below. The video sees Alejandro on stage by himself with guitar, kick drum, and vintage mic, giving some insight as to what you'll probably see at the party tonight.

Technicolor Hearts at The Parish in Austin (more by Tim Griffin)

We're happy to report that there have been a couple additions to our previously-announced Texas Takeover Party which happens on Thursday (10/18) at Rebel NYC (251 W. 30th St.) as part of next week's CMJ Festival.
Headlining the night (1 AM) will be Houston's Grandfather Child. The band, who are signed to New West Records, count Robert Ellis as a member. He, who has appeared on BV many times, just happens to be playing a solo set right before them too. You can download both sides of Grandfather Child's "Waiting For You" single at the top of this post.
Grandfather Child are also playing a day party at Lulu's in Greenpoint on Friday (10/19) afternoon, and, later that night, the New West showcase at The Living Room (11:30 PM) with Sydney Wayser, Kalen Nash, White Violet, Ponderosa, and Wolf Ram Heart. All Grandfather Child dates, including a December run that brings them back to NYC, are listed below.
Additionally, Austin's Technicolor Hearts will now open the party at 6 PM (get ready for a long night!). The band will also play Pete's Candy Store later that same night (10 PM). You can stream their most recent EP below, and check out lots of live pictures of them on BV Austin.

Laura Stevenson @ MHOW in June (more by Amanda Hatfield)

Laura Stevenson and the Cans have a short run of dates this month which kicks off in NYC for CMJ and then makes its way south, culminating in Gainesville's The Fest. During CMJ the band will play the Deli showcase at The Delancey on October 16 with Blonds, Shakey Graves, XNY, Backwords, Swear and Shake, and more. Then after that, they'll play the Let's Get Messy showcase at The Rock Shop on October 17 with Roomrunner, Archie Powel & The Exports, Twin Tigers, Pretty & Nice, and more. Advance tickets for the Rock Shop show are available and you can also try to get into both of those shows with your CMJ badge.
As mentioned, when the band returns home after their October run, they'll play a local show in Brooklyn at Public Assembly on November 11 with The Shondes, Leda, and ADVAITA. Tickets for that show are still available.
