Fargo soundtrack

The first season of FX series Fargo, loosely based on the Coen Brothers 1996 film of the same name, defied expectations by being really good. The second season continues to defy, by actually being possibly better than the first -- something True Detective could not pull off. (Final judgement withheld till Monday's season finale.) Season 2 also cleverly draws from the rest of the Coen Brothers universe, incorporating flashes from their other films into Fargo's world, this season set in 1979. It's got a great cast (Patrick Wilson, Ted Danson, Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons, Nick Offerman to name a few), balances humor, tension and very human moments deftly, and is one of the best-looking shows on TV.

The second season also ups the ante with an amazing soundtrack filled with brilliantly chosen, sometimes surprising, songs from the era, but also cover versions of songs used in various Coen Brothers films. The fourth episode uses The Chieftains & Bon Iver's version of "Down in the Willow Garden" (which is woven throughout Raising Arizona), but they've commissioned a number of covers just for the show, including: Blitzen Trapper's great, '70s southern-fried boogie take on "Man of Constant Sorrow" (from O Brother Where Art Thou?); Tweedy doing Jose Felciano's "Let's Find Each Other Tonight" (originally in Fargo); White Denim turn Kenny Rodgers' "Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)" (used in The Big Lebowski) into cheesy disco; and Spoon's Britt Daniel delivers a fine solo acoustic version of Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Run Through the Jungle" (also Lebowski). It comes off like a Coen Brothers tribute album (for that matter Fargo is at times like a Coen Brothers tribute series).

None of the original recordings of these have been released yet in any official way, and there's been no word on a soundtrack yet, apart from there will be one. But people have been ripping them and putting them on YouTube. Listen to rips of Blitzen Trapper, Britt Daniel, and White Denim's contributions (and that Cheiftains/Bon Iver cover), and check out the soundtrack listing of each episode (courtesy show music supervisor Maggie Phillips' blog), below.

Drake and Future

Is Drake the new Kanye?

Explosive pyrotechnics. Mad energy. The "6 God" backdrop and the whole field on his team. Drake hit the stage like he owned the world. When the backdrop flashed "If You're Reading This We Made It" I felt it in my body the way I do when I see 'Ye live. I seriously thought, "Wow, Drake has done it." Kanye is tabloid fodder and bad fashion and Drake is totally running the game. Drake's the new Kanye. And in that moment I really wanted it for him. That feeling stuck for a good portion of the set. Weirdly, the thing that undid it was when he brought out Future. We knew it was going to happen next week but tonight was a surprise. With the new collab album out it was an obvious choice and the crowd went wild and I actually liked the tracks they did. But Yeezy would never have done that and, more importantly, he'd never have to. He'd keep his 90 minutes all to himself and be completely riveting the whole time. [Deborah Sengupta Stith for Austin 360]

The 2015 Austin City Limits Festival kicked off on Friday and continued on Saturday (10/3) with Drake, TV on the Radio, A$AP Rocky, Alabama Shakes, Jose Gonzalez, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Sturgill Simpson, Shakey Graves, Father John Misty, Vince Staples and plenty more. Pictures of the second day of ACL are in this post.

As the above review points out, Drake brought out Future during his set to play three songs off DS2 including the Drake collab "Where Ya At," and then the duo made the live debut of "Jumpman" and "Big Rings" off their collaborative album What A Time To Be Alive. Videos below. Drake also released another Beyonce collab over the weekend, "Can I." He debuted on his Apple Music Beats 1 show, OVO Sound Radio, and you can listen below.

ACL fest's first weekend wraps up Sunday (10/4) and if you're not there you can stream it live (via Red Bull TV) below. ACL does it again this coming weekend (10/9 - 10/11) too. UPDATE: Day 3 happened and pics are up.

Hurrray for the Riff Raff & Giraffage playing bonus sets in the tent
Outside Lands 2015
Outside Lands 2015

Like we did a week earlier at Lollapalooza, BrooklynVegan co-hosted/presented/curated the Toyota Tent inside the Outside Lands festival in San Francisco this past weekend. We already posted some pictures which included the Friday sets by Speedy Ortiz and Natalie Prass. Here are more from both of those sets and from Saturday and Sunday too.

Saturday included live set by Waters, The Drums, Classixx and Hurray for The Riff Raff whose upcoming tour includes a show at Carnegie Hall. There was also live Q&A with Django Django whose live set was a major highlight for one paper:

The London art-rock quartet came in a close second to [Kendrick] Lamar, turning in a sensational set that surely earned them hundreds (thousands?) of new fans. The group isn't all that well known in the U.S., but that will change if they keep rocking the house like they did at Outside Lands. Indeed, just plan on being head over heels for this band in, say, about a week. Grab a copy of the group's new album, "Born Under Saturn," and the transformation could happen even sooner.
On Sunday DJ Rezound (aka Jamie Granato who was also our BrooklynVegan host for the weekend) started warming up the crowd at 1pm to get the crowd ready for a Q & A with Dan Deacon at 2:00. One of the last songs he played was off the new Tame Impala record, which felt good when an audience member later asked Dan which records he had been impressed by recently and he mentioned their new one. Dan felt immediate comfort on the stage, telling the crowd he and Jamie were an improv group and asking for suggestions. Dan waxed poetic about everything from human perspective (being trapped inside a painting) to hoarding (he is self-proclaimed). Lastly, he reminded everyone to not litter on the beautiful festival grounds. Giraffage drew a crowd that spilled out of the tent and had people dancing wildly to his brand of house, trap and mash-up. Shakey Graves left everything on stage with their performance, an emotive show that had girls running past security for selfies the minute he stepped down the stairs.

Hot Chip DJing the tent
Outside Lands 2015

With 15 years and six albums behind them, Hot Chip took to the main stage with an army of synths prepared to get the audience moving with their fusion of disco, pop and hip-hop. Tracks like "I Feel Better," "One Life Stand" and "Over and Over" had the audience dancing along to the band's makeshift choreographed moves. [Billboard]
METZ stopped by the Toyota Tent for a picture, and Rezound DJ'd more while Hot Chip finished their main stage performance and walked over to our tent for their own DJ set. After a fun set of old and new classics, Alex Bleeker and The Freaks took the stage to play a set of all new material that sounded great. They were jazzed up from their performance earlier that day of Grateful Dead covers where original Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann took the stage with them on the 20th anniversary of Jerry Garcia's death (Bill has two shows coming up at MSG with actual Grateful Dead members).

More pictures from the whole weekend continue below...

Roger Waters

photo: My Morning Jacket @ GovBall (more by PSquared Photography)

Rumors are starting to spread that Pink Floyd's Roger Waters is going to be backed by My Morning Jacket at Newport Folk Fest tonight!

My Morning Jacket and its members are Newport Folk Fest regulars, but they weren't on the schedule this year, despite being in the area to play Lewiston two days ago, and Xponential Music Festival in Camden on Saturday. Waters, who has promised a "very special" set, was a huge and surprising addition to the sold out Newport Folk Fest back in May. Jim James and crew on stage with Roger would definitely be very special (especially for My Morning Jacket!).

Stay tuned, and tune in to TuneIn.com to stream select sets from the fest live today, Saturday and Sunday. Actually Roger's set isn't listed on the streaming schedule, but Calexico, The Tallest Man on Earth, Heartless Bastards, Langhorne Slim, Courtney Barnett, Laura Marling and many more are on there. The full list of included artists and the embedded player are below.

On Sunday, My Morning Jacket play a show in Maryland with Jason Isbell who plays Newport on Saturday after playing a big free show in Prospect Park tonight (7/24).

Pink Floyd's other singer, David Gilmour, just announced a bunch of huge shows of his own, two nights at MSG included.

My Morning Jacket also just announced four Beacon Theater shows. Two are already sold out. Two are on pre-sale. All MMJ dates HERE.
