Friday's Celebrate Brooklyn! concert in Prospect Part (6/27) was country-tinged, with South Carolina's Shovels and Rope headlining and also featuring sets from Valerie June and Shake Graves. Pictures from the whole evening are in this post.

Formerly a one-man band, Austin troubadour Shakey Graves brought in a drummer for a number of songs in his set adding a little more "oomph" and variety from his typical hollow-body strumming and suitcase drumming sound.

Dressed in a turquoise blue dress, Valerie June followed up with her Tennessee twang that reverberated throughout the summery evening, switching from a scorching red Gretsch (which she nicknamed matter-of-factly "Big Red") to a Martin dreadnought acoustic ("the Stranger"), a petite ukelele-banjo or banjolele ("the Baby"), and of course, a banjo ("the Mom"). Her voice was definitely reminiscent of another steadfast country relic of the past with a similar name -- Ms. Valerie June Carter Cash -- and comparisons to the Appallachian folks singers of the Lomax collection are apt descriptions of her sound. However, it's not all folky sound that comes out of this singer. At one point in the evening she got down and revved up Big Red for a show-stopping jam.

All the way from Johns Island, SC, Carrie Ann Heart and Michael Trent, the indie country couple that make up Shovels and Rope, stomped and hollered on stage to a packed crowd in Prospect Park and probably their largest headlining NYC show to date. Not bad for a band who's played at Arlene's Grocery just two years ago. The band played a number songs from their upcoming album Swimmin' Time, which is scheduled for release on August 26. While we wait for that, take a gander at more Prospect Park pics and videos below...

Sasquatch Festival 2014 - Day 1
Sasquatch Festival 2014 - Day 1

Playing essentially the same set they've begun taking across America, the version with "Hey Ya!" in the middle instead of left for desert, there were no hints of the awkwardness some saw in the hip-hop duo's Coachella performance in April: just urgency. While both men are no doubt happy to collect their headlining cheddar, on Saturday night, their performance was about legacy. They appeared within a cube with black-and-white projections of the American flag, evoking their "Stankonia" cover art, and their banter guided the crowd between songs as the set pivoted from hits to deep cuts, remembering the days they rehearsed rap verses around the kitchen table and crowing over OutKast's eternal coolness before "So Fresh, So Clean." [The Oregonian]
Washington state music festival Sasquatch went down this past weekend (its only weekend) for three days packed with loads of bands. We just posted pictures of Yelle from day 1 (5/23), and we've got way more pictures from the first day in this post, including shots of Outkast, Die Antwoord, Rudimental, Mogwai, Damien Jurado, Phantogram, Foals, Phosphorescent, Chance the Rapper, De La Soul, Eugene Mirman, Rhett Miller (of the Old 97's) and so many more.

White Sea (Morgan Kibby of M83) also played that day and just announced a NYC show.

Dawes @ T5 - 6/22/13
Dawes

LA folk rockers Dawes released a new album, Stories Don't End, this year and have been on a tour in support of it which rolled through NYC for a big show at Terminal 5 on Saturday (6/22) with Shovels and Rope. They played a bunch of stuff of their new album, a handful of oldies, and did some covers as well, including Traveling Wilburys' "End of the Line," which Shovels and Rope joined them for during the encore. Pictures, videos, and the setlist from that show are in this post.

Dawes hung around NYC, and last night (6/24) then three fourths of the band (minus Wylie Gelber) headed to the Housing Works Bookstore Cafe for a stripped down acoustic set. Regarding the missing member, Now I've Heard Everything explains:

Taylor [Goldsmith] explained that Wylie did not sing, and when some people in the audience said that they had seen him sing on stage during a Dawes show, Taylor joked that "we turn off his microphone; don't tell him." So Taylor played guitar and sang with Griffin and Tay adding harmonies for about 70 minutes.
After that show, the guys headed to a loft in Brooklyn for a late-night private Relix party. Videos from both of those shows are below.

Both the Housing Works show and the Relix party were opened by Sarah Lee Guthrie & Johnny Irion, whose new album, Wassaic Way, comes out on August 6 and was produced by Jeff Tweedy and Patrick Sansone of Wilco (who just played a guest-filled covers set over the weekend). Sarah & Johnny have more upcoming dates of their own including shows in Asbury Park on September 5 at The Saint and in NYC on September 17 at Mercury Lounge with The Melodic. Tickets for the Mercury Lounge show are on sale now. All dates are listed below.

Meanwhile, Dawes will be heading upstate for a Rochester show on July 4 for a show with Doug Paisley, and they'll be bringing their tour back to the NYC-area for another show with Shovels and Rope on July 24 at Capitol Theatre. Tickets for that show are still available. Soon after that Cap show, Dawes also play Camden, NJ's XPoNential Music Festival with a genre-appropriate lineup that also includes Phosphorescent, Lord Huron (who also just played NYC), and more. Tickets for that fest are still available.

Shovels & Rope @ T5 - 6/22/13
Shovels & Rope

Shovels and Rope have some shows of their own too. If you really want to, you can catch them at Jones Beach tonight (6/25) and Wednesday (6/26) opening for Dave Matthews Band, but you can also catch them on their headlining tour which goes down in late summer/early fall with support from Texas singer/songwriter Shakey Graves (who just played NYC on Sunday). That tour comes to NYC on September 12 at Webster Hall. Tickets for that show go on sale Friday (6/28) at noon with an AmEx presale starting Wednesday (6/26) at noon.

More pictures from the T5 show, videos, and all lists of tour dates, below...

BV Austin, in partnership with The Convoy Group, Regressive Records, Eye in the Sky Collective, Tito's Handmade Vodka, and Mercy hangover prevention, presented a CMJ showcase of Texas bands on Thursday night at Rebel NYC. Here are some pictures from the shindig. They continue below...

Shakey Graves

Alejandro Rose-Garcia is probably most recognized as "The Swede" responsible for luring Julie's heart on the second season of Friday Night Lights. This is convenient because his one-man band Shakey Graves is proudly, unarguably Texan. Texas forever, they say. His fingerpicking and stomps take on the grizzled weight of the Old West, but they can also expand into balladry aligned with (true Swede) The Tallest Man on Earth. In either scenario, he's a fierce contrast to all the digitally driven bands showing up at CMJ in spades. [The L Magazine]
Austin's Shakey Graves (aka Alejandro Rose-Garcia) is in NYC this week for CMJ and played a couple shows already, including one with Laura Stevenson and the Cans. His last show is tonight at our Texas Takeover Party, which happens at Rebel NYC (10/18) (5 PM doors) and is being presented by our BV Austin site. Admission is free with RSVP and drinks are free while they last too. The rest of the lineup features Robert Ellis, Grandfather Child, Wild Child, The Tontons, New York City Queens, Josiah Hall, and Technicolor Hearts.

Shakey Graves recently filmed a live video for "Roll The Bones," which you can watch below. The video sees Alejandro on stage by himself with guitar, kick drum, and vintage mic, giving some insight as to what you'll probably see at the party tonight.
