Christmas is just four days away. That means very few people are working, there are a lot less people in the city, and that this long weekend should be full of holiday shows like A Twisted Christmas, Heeb Storytelling at Joe's Pub, and Heebonism @ Knitting Factory. What else can you recommend?

Saturday night was a big night for music in NYC. A few lucky people got to see Sigur Ros play a few songs, Arcade Fire headlined their biggest NYC show at (what must be) the biggest venue in NYC - their ninth NYC show this year (where they covered the Violent Femmes), and Miss Sharon Jones and her Dap Kings brought the soul back home to the legendary Apollo Theater.

“First, I feel kind of angry about it,” she said, but then added, “Well, if it took Amy to get the Dap-Kings heard, then it’s a good thing. I say it’s great. Thank you.” [says Sharon Jones to the NY Times]

Sharon Jones

Sharon Jones herself just completed filming the role of "Lila" in the upcoming film The Great Debaters. Denzel Washington both directed and stars in the film along with Forest Whitaker. Sharon plays a "Juke Joint" singer named "Lila" and has both a speaking part and is featured singing the Lucille Bogan classic "That's what my Baby Likes". She also recorded additional songs which will be included in the official soundtrack to the film. The movie is a Weinstein Co release and is due out on Christmas Day. Denzel Washington hand-picked Sharon from a quickly made DVDo of her live performances and applauded her on-screen talents.
Tickets for Sharon's next NYC show at the Apollo Theater (October 6) go on sale Friday. Her last NYC show was a free one at Castle Clinton. New song on MySpace. All tour dates below....

the Budos Band @ Citysol, NYC - July 14, 2007
Budos Band @ Citysol

Tonight (July 26, 2007) is the free Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings concert in Castle Clinton - a seated outdoor venue (where Drive by Truckers just played), but I doubt many people will be staying in their seats - well, actually I don't know. It will definitely be weird if security trys to keep it a truly seated concert. What do you think? Note: "Two free tickets per person will be distributed at the Castle on a first-come, first-served basis starting at 5:00pm on the day of the show."

And as I've said many times, Sharon's backing band The Dap Kings also now back Amy Winehouse, and share members (and a label) with The Budos Band. The Budos Band played the free BrooklynVegan/Solar One Citysol concert a few weekends ago - the one Les Savy Fav headlined. And as previously mentioned, despite not a ton of people showing up for their early set time (relatively speaking), the show was a funky good time. The Budos Band's next show is at Joe's Pub on August 9th - I hope they can all fit on the stage. More photos & tour dates, below...

Booker T & the MG’s were sooo awesome; when they started playing “Green Onions” and “Big Train” on stage, people were flippin’ out! There were a bunch of random women dancing all over the place… it was sort of amusing/funny/cute. And when you throw in Sharon Jones for a touch of soul (especially with a song like “Sitting on the Dock” by Otis) and lots of vocal improvs… it was damn near perfect. [cdnpio]
They do it again today at noon.

Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings

Speaking of the Dap Kings, Sharon Jones has a bunch of free NYC shows coming up - including one today, and one tomorrow with Booker T & the MG's. River to River's site describes tonight's (June 13 - 7pm) show like this:

This 1992 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, responsible for creating the spare and punchy “Memphis sound,” performs a soulful show with guest vocalist, “Queen of Funk,” Sharon Jones.
It's a perfect (and free) alternative to Franz and Paul. BAM's website says this about tomorrow's Brooklyn show:
Booker T. & The MG's with special guest Sharon Jones
June 14
As the studio band that backed Otis Redding and Sam and Dave, Booker T. and The MG's are true patriarchs of rock and roll—and the classic track "Green Onions" only furthered their fame in their own right. In a match made in soul heaven, Booker T. and band are joined by Sharon Jones of Dap-Kings fame, whose sound smolders like a hot night in her hometown of Augusta, Georgia.
The Brooklyn show starts at noon - timed to coincide with your lunch hour.

All tour dates, and new album info, below......

Unlike during the dance parade in Manhattan on Saturday, the sun was shining at the 5th Avenue Street Fair in Park Slope on Sunday (May 20, 2007). The annual Brooklyn festival runs down 5th Ave from Southpaw, past Union Hall, and ends right around the Lucky 13 Saloon. The bands playing in front of Southpaw this year were Miss Fairchild, The Real Live Show, and, the only one I saw - The Budos Band....

Right before SXSW, the Langerado Music Festival took place in South Florida (March 9-11). Performers included My Morning Jacket, The New Pornographers, Stephen Malkmus, Cat Power, Explosions in the Sky, The Hold Steady, and Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings...

"We had a blast down in Florida and have finally settled back into "normal life. I've been to numerous music festivals and extravaganzas, and this definitely has found a spot on the top of that list. Here's why…" [Live Music Blog]

From Florida, Sharon Jones headed to Austin, Texas to participate in SXSW.

Brooklyn soul-funk phenoms Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings entered the SXSW pantheon after conjuring the spirit of James Brown and casting a spell over a crowd of five hundred last Saturday night. After witnessing Jones' sassy command of her audience, the rock bands in town might as well just turn in their distortion pedals. "That show was ten times better than the second-best show I saw all week," one jaded attendee declared. Comments on our EarBud blog about Jones' live video got the same reaction: Super fly. [East Bay Express]
Sharon's next three shows are at the Jazz Cafe in London (March 30 - April 1), and her next NYC show is - like Bloc Party, Modest Mouse, The Stooges, Bjork and The Arcade Fire - at the United Palace Theatre on 175th Street. The date is April 13, 2007, and she's opening for Rock N Roll Hall of Fame inductees the Isley Brothers. Tickets are on sale. More Isley Brothers dates at Ticketmaster.
