Balance & Composure / Spill
B&C have been pretty quiet lately -- it was their first show in a while and their first NYC show since headlining the larger Irving Plaza over a year ago. They also said it would be their last show for a while again -- but they told the crowd on stage that they have a new album in the works. They stuck to fan favorites for this show though, including an older one that they said they hadn't played live in a very long time.
B&C has been around for a while, but for fellow Pennsylvania band and openers Spill, this was their first NYC show. The members are familiar faces though; they're fronted by former Placeholder singer Brandon Gepfer and ex-We Were Skeletons member Rafael Diaz is on bass. Like Balance & Composure, Spill brought a ton of '90s nostalgia to the show, but while B&C has the Deftones/Hum vibes, Spill provided the Superchunk/Dinosaur Jr.
Thanks to all the bands, Union Pool, Shiner, and everyone who came out. Sorry we couldn't get even more people in to what was a rare night of live Balance & Composure music. More pictures below...
Balance & Composure
We're thrilled to announce that BrooklynVegan and Shiner Beers are teaming up to present a show with two guitar-bashing rock bands in Brooklyn on October 2 at Union Pool. Headlining will be Balance & Composure (whose last show here was over a year ago and at the much larger Irving Plaza). Opening is the newer band Spill, who recently formed out of the ashes of Placeholder and We Were Skeletons. FIVE DOLLAR Tickets (which include a free Shiner beer) (you'll get a ticket when you enter) go on sale Friday (9/18) at noon. Hope to see you there.
B&C's last releases were 2013's split with Braid and their The Things We Think We're Missing LP (both on No Sleep). Spill just put out their debut EP on Broken World this summer, and this week they made a video for its song "Sucks Either Way." Watch that, with a stream of the B&C LP, below.

Royal Headache / Sheer Mag / The Gotobeds @ Saint Vitus 8/30/2015
Watching Australian band Royal Headache is kinda like being courtside at a tennis match, with frontman Shogun being the ball. The guy is a constant blur, and was bouncing from one side of the stage to the other at Saint Vitus on Sunday night (8/30). He is most definitely the lifeblood of the band, an absolute maniac who was shirtless and drenched in sweat just a few songs into their set. He also reminded me a bit of The Fall's Mark E Smith in that, even though he doesn't play an instrument onstage, he seems to be the architect of their sound, correcting the substitute bassist when he played a bum note, and guiding the drummer at one point. All while singing his heart out in a soulful croon that is somewhere between Steve Marriott and Feargal Sharkey. They are a total blast.
This was the final of three NYC shows for Royal Headache, all in Brooklyn and all with Philadelphia's Sheer Mag. That band's tough sound draws most of its influence from late-'70s riff rock like Cheap Trick and Thin Lizzy, while most of its energy comes from singer Tina Halladay who is also a belter. I don't quite get all the ultra-hype surrounding them in some circles, but they were good.
Opening the night were Pittsburgh's The Gotobeds who came up just for this show. They were in a good mood and frontman Eli Kasan, who was later singing along to pretty much every Royal Headache song, was cracking jokes and throwing kicks throughout the set. And an interesting set it was. In addition to three songs from their first album for Sub Pop which is due out early next year, they also covered the entirety of Redd Kross debut 12", and invited Kevin Pedersen, who runs Royal Headache's label What's Your Rupture and whose birthday it was, onstage to sing vocals on a "Annette's Got the Hits." There was also a big skeleton/witch model/costume that guitarist Tom Payne decided to wear at the end of the set. "Can you believe we found this in the trash just a couple hours ago," cracked Kasan.
The Noisey-presented show was just $5.00 to get in, and that included a free Shiner beer, much like you'll get at the Speedy Ortiz show happening at the same venue tonight (8/31).

Long-running, but more popular than ever, Baltimore's dancing synth-pop act Future Islands came to NYC last night (8/7) for a free show at the House of Vans. The bill was filled out by a trio of excellent pop-minded acts: Syrian pop singer Omar Souleyman, Dan Boeckner's (Wolf Parade, Divine Fits) new act Operators and local indie pop act Mas Ysa. Not surprisingly, the show was already near capacity by the time the first opener went on around 7pm. Those who RSVP'd but didn't get there early enough were being turned away all night.
Omar is a great opener for Future Islands because Omar doesn't do much. It's hard to tell if the deadpan thing is his shtick, if he's just phoning it in, or if he's just reacting to a crowd full of non-dancers. He walks around the stage in sunglasses, sometimes staring at the not-dancing crowd as he croons. His signature moves are moving his outreached arms up and down and clapping to get the crowd energized and moving. Backed only by a keyboard player and/or track, his music is booming, loud and sounds great. And It would be a great dance party if people danced, or maybe if Omar did.
Future Islands frontman Samuel T. Herring on the other hand is a dancing machine, a living meme, a sex machine. Smiling, chatting, crooning and dancing while backed by a very able and seasoned band. The crowd goes nuts and rightfully so (even with the muddy, poorly-mixed sound in the House of Vans warehouse that kind of ruined it for me, as I stood towards the back). The large, enthusiastic crowd, drunk on free Shiner beer, cheered before and after every song, and even more when Sam showed off his special moves, and even more when hit single "Seasons" came up in the Singles-heavy set list.
House of Vans is a spacious, corporate-funded, skate park and event venue in warehouse located in the heart of hip Greenpoint/Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Future Islands know the neighborhood well, or at least certain places in the neighborhood like the small, long-running DIY venue called Death By Audio that they've played many times, and that Sam gave a shoutout to from the stage (It was hard to understand but he said, but it was something about going there the night before because it's the only place he knows).
For Operators, it was their 2nd-ever NYC show. Their first was the BrooklynVegan Northside showcase. House of Vans ended up being the first show of a Future Islands and Operators tour together. They'll hit Millvale, PA tonight. Post-hardcore vets Shiner briefly reunited in 2012, but now that that's in the past, singer Allen Epley is back fronting The Life and Times, the band he formed after Shiner's initial breakup. The Life and Times are set to release their fourth album, Lost Bees, next week (8/5) via SlimStyle Records. They've already put out one of its singles called "Passion Pit" (seriously), and they've now got a second, "Animal Collective." Just kidding. It's called "Bored to Death" and it's more of the spacey post-hardcore/alternative rock we've come to expect from Epley and his bands. Or if you're unfamiliar, from other '90s bands who reunited in recent memory like Failure and Hum. Listen below.
The band are also going on a tour with support from DC post-punks Deleted Scenes which is a pretty cool double bill. That tour hits NYC on September 13 at Knitting Factory. Tickets for that show are on sale now.

Pains / Hold Steady
After Friday, which came after Thursday, which came after a night show on Wednesday, we said hello and goodbye to both of Red 7's stages one last time with our third and final BrooklynVegan SXSW day party at the 7th & Red River venue in Austin on Saturday (3/15).
Outside, despite the rain that plagued us that day, Palehound kicked things off with their noisy indie rock, and they were followed by the high-energy poppy punk of Cincinnati's Tweens. More poppy punk came from Northampton's Potty Mouth, and then came Mary Timony's (Autoclave, Helium, Wild Flag) riff-rockin' new band Ex Hex, who were one of the most fun bands of the day to watch. They were followed by Potty Mouth's Northampton neighbors Speedy Ortiz, who were great as always, and whose new stuff (like "American Horror") sounded great next to their older songs (like "Taylor Swift"). Wye Oak followed and previewed stuff from their upcoming guitar-less album (they did have their guitar on Saturday though), and the show closed with a super fun set from The Hold Steady.
The indoor stage got off to a great start with Saintseneca, who had a tight blend of Fleet Foxes/Arcade Fire-isms, then it got weird for the UK's Fat White Family, who brought filth and fury not unlike The Stooges or The Birthday Party. (They're in NYC this weekend.) Quilt kept things trippy (but cleaner) after that, and Connan Mockasin was his eccentric self too (though he admitted he was recovering from the night before where he told everyone at Swan Dive to take their clothes off). Then came the art pop of Hundred Waters, a mostly-solo set from Braid frontman Bob Nanna which included Braid songs and some Jack and Ace action with his wife Lauren LoPiccolo, sneering Detroit post-punks Protomartyr, and finally a headlining set from the new lineup of The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, which is easily their most powerful and fun to watch yet.

Shiner beer was on special and we gave away free Jameson. Veri organic soda was free, plentiful and was there to help you rehydrate. We let in 20 people each day who were taking advantage of Esurance's SXSW-wide #EsuranceAccess program.

Trust / OFF!
Like the one the day before, the second of our three BrooklynVegan SXSW day parties happened on both stages of Red 7 on Friday (3/14). Outside, the show opened nicely with Columbus, OH indie rockers Connections, followed by intense garage rock trio The Blind Shake, whose members were all decked out in uniform with tight black zip-up jackets and shaved heads. Then came together PANGEA with more garage rock but more on the melodic/accessible side, and they were followed by the punky pop of Upset, who count ex-Vivian Girl Ali Koehler and ex-Hole drummer Patty Schemel as members. After them came a wild set from more veteran musicians in the Keith Morris-fronted hardcore supergroup OFF!, and they were followed by ex-members of Women making shouty, jammy post-punk in their new band Viet Cong. Then came more (but darker and backed by a drum machine) post-punk from Beth Israel, and finally the show wrapped up with a headlining set from Parquet Courts...
"I can't remember a better show in the last five years--maybe 10--than the one Parquet Courts put on at the Brooklyn Vegan day party. It all depends on the show, right? Sometimes you can be transformed by an arena show or knocked over by some random punk band in a shoebox. But this was seeing a band that is RIGHT NOW! They have 1.5 albums under their belt, they have no fat, they have no gimmicks, they just flat-out torched the landscape. This was it, this is what seeing live music is about, this show--THIS BAND--is why I love music so much. A jaw dropping show." [The Portland Mercury]

Meanwhile, inside things got off to an eccentric danceable start with Parisian band La Femme, who were part new wave, part surf rock, part ye-ye, and highly entertaining. (NYC: We're presenting their show this weekend at Glasslands.) It stayed in upbeat mode for psych rock trio The Entrance Band, but then calmed down a lot for the orchestral indie pop of Mutual Benefit. Tomas Barfod was supposed to go on next but had to cancel at the last minute, unfortunately, though once Classixx took the stage it returned to dance mode. Super Furry Animals frontman Gruff Rhys followed with a set that was partially solo, partially with accompaniment and fully entertaining, and then we got downtempo electronic pop from Jessy Lanza before inside stage closed with the gothy house pop of Toronto's Trust.

Though everyone was shaken up from the previous night's tragic events (which happened not far from and during the official BrooklynVegan showcase on Wednesday night), SXSW moved forward on Thursday morning, when we began our first of three day parties at Red 7.
Our day shows took place on the indoor and outdoor stages of Red 7, with the indoor stage on Thursday staying (mostly) on the folkier/quieter side with San Fermin, Sylvan Esso, Rhett Miller of the Old 97s, Torres, Nicole Atkins, Cate Le Bon and Basia Bulat. Meanwhile, the outside that day was crazier and a little more random with Little Dragon, Roosevelt, BadBadNotGood (joined by Odd Future's Tyler, the Creator), Nothing, Trash Talk, Overdoz, Cities Aviv and Calvin Love.
Basia Bulat was a nice start to the day where she performed solo with an autoharp, ukulele, and keyboard. Cate Le Bon did a fine job following with her full band who got pretty intense at the end. Then it was singer/songwriter Nicole Atkins who played songs from her new Slow Phaser (catch her on tour with Nick Cave), followed by the grungy folk of Torres (who previewed some new material), followed by Old 97's frontman Rhett Miller who had a ton of fun with the show and did a bunch of covers like Tom Petty's "American Girl" and Pixies' "Wave of Mutilation." After Rhett, Sylvan Esso, the duo of Mountain Man's Amelia Meath and Megafaun's Nick Sanborn, had the indoor crowd moving more than anyone else that day with their synthy pop and Amelia's dance moves. And San Fermin wrapped things up with their orchestral pop.

Outside, Calvin Love and his band woke everyone up with their indie rock, which was followed by the noise rap of Cities Aviv and the weed-obsessed rap of Overdoz. Then things got kicked up ten notches for Trash Talk, who opened up the entire floor outside at Red 7 for a circle pit and kept egging on the crowd, Damian of Fucked Up included, the whole set. Nothing followed, keeping the heavy vibe in tact, but in more atmospheric ways. Then the vibe totally changed as jazz hop trio BadBadNotGood played (including a Flying Lotus cover). Their set was instrumental... until the last two songs when they were joined by Odd Future's Tyler, the Creator (who's collaborated with them before). Tyler and BBNG really got the crowd going, and though many filtered out after their set, a new batch of people quickly filled it back up for Roosevelt and the Swedish electro party that was Little Dragon.

Nokia MixRadio was on site educating us about their free music service and playing the BrooklynVegan MixRadio SXSW playlist between bands. Indiegogo was there with free earplugs and conversation. Songboard, a new "music destination that offers artists and bands essential services and unique capabilities to maximize potential" was there too and with free thumb drives and education. We let in 20 people each day who were taking advantage of Esurance's SXSW-wide #EsuranceAccess program.

Shiner Beers, who we recently teamed up with for a free show in NYC and who will join us at our upcoming Austin day parties, were also a sponsor of Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin this year. At that fest that they asked musicians to play one song in front of their parked van. They dubbed the high quality results "Shiner Van Sessions", and today we premiere two of them, and another over at BV Austin.
The Dismemberment Plan's Travis Morrison sounds just perfect in the outdoor setting with nothing but an electric guitar and a microphone as he plays "No One's Saying Nothing" off his DC band's 2013 reunion album Uncanney Valley. California's Cayucas don't sound so shabby themselves stripped down and harmonizing a rendition of "Will The Thrill" from their 2013 Secretly Canadian release Bigfoot. Watch and listen below...

Hop Along / Swearin' @ Saint Vitus - 2/24/14
Hop Along, Swearin' and Great Thunder took over Saint Vitus in NYC last night (2/24) as part of a free show presented by Shiner in conjunction with Transmission in Austin, and us at BrooklynVegan. It was a great show and the second time in three days that I saw the Crutchfield sisters sharing a stage in Brooklyn.
Great Thunder, the side project of Katie Crutchfield (who currently fronts Waxahatchee) and Keith Spencer (of Swearin' and the current drummer of Waxahatchee's live band), kicked off the night with Katie and Keith trading songs, switching between acoustic guitars, electric guitars, and keyboard. Especially since both members have such active bands, Great Thunder can come off like a "just for fun" kind of project, but the songs they played last night were too strong for that. Some rivaled the best moments of the members' main bands.
Great as they were, there's no denying when Keith took the stage again for the Swearin' set that followed, the energy in the packed room drastically increased. Swearin' have put in many solid NYC appearances over the last few years, but this had to be the best I've seen them. With their great new album, Surfing Strange, which is bigger, heavier, and more collaborative than their still-great debut, Swearin' have developed into a serious live force. The interplay between co-lead singers Allison Crutchfield and Kyle Gilbride is spot on, and it increasingly diversifies the set. They've got the passionate slow(er) burners ("Movie Star"), the rockers ("Unwanted Place"), and the in between ("Dust in the Gold Sack").
The show wrapped up with the great as always Hop Along. They're finally getting around to following up 2012's excellent Get Disowned, and they used the show to try out some new material, which was sounding pretty great. The new album is definitely one to look forward to. The crowd seemed into it too, but of course it was the older stuff that really got them going. New-ish single "Sister Cities" didn't feel new-ish anymore, as it's now a live staple and most of the crowd seemed familiar, and on closing song "Tibetan Pop Stars," from just about anywhere in the room you could hear the crowd shouting along over Frances Quinlan's own voice. Hop Along return to NYC to open for Paint It Black at Brooklyn Night Bazaar on March 8 with Night Birds and Bad Canoes (fronted by Screaming Females' Marissa Paternoster). Free. Hop Along are also planning to tour with Title Fight and Waxahatchee on the west coast surrounding those two bands' appearances at Coachella. Tour flyer (with all dates) below.

The previously discussed Shiner show with Errortype:11, that was set to happen at Irving Plaza, has been moved to the Gramercy Theater (8/11). Tickets for the show are still available or you can roll the dice and try to win a pair, AND with a vinyl copy of the recently reissued Shiner LP The Egg! Details on how to enter are below.
The lineup for the Gramercy Theater show has since been expanded, and now includes Brooklyn's Census. Census wade in the waters spilled by shoegazey 4AD forefathers and the pre-shaven head Billy Corgan on recent demo tracks. The band, which shares a member but not an aesthetic with Cults, has spent a few nights supporting names like The Growlers and The Young in the recent past. Art for Shiner's The Egg
Shiner was a band from Kansas City, Missouri that was active from 1992 to 2003. The group formed in 1992, and quickly found wide exposure, releasing a vinyl EP in 1993 and touring with acts such as Sunny Day Real Estate, Chore, Jawbox, Season to Risk, The Jesus Lizard, and Girls Against Boys. The group released their first LP, Splay (recorded at Steve Albini's Chicago studio) in 1996, and a second album, Lula Divinia the next year. Sub Pop took notice, and released a 7" single of the group's songs "Sleep it Off" and "Half Empty". Following this the band toured with Hum in 1998. A third full-length, Starless, was released on a label run by members of The Descendents, Owned and Operated, in 2000. A fourth LP, The Egg, would follow before the group broke up in 2002.Shiner called it quits with a show in their native Kansas City in January of 2003, with its members taking to projects like Every Time I Die, The Damned Things, The Life & Times, With Knives, and many others.
Close to ten years later, the band is back for a quintet of reunion shows in the US in celebrate of The Egg's reissue, due on August 7th. The dates include stops in Lawrence, Kansas, Chicago, LA and NYC at Irving Plaza on August 11th with Errortype:11. Tickets are on sale.
In related news, Errortype:11 shares members of Primitive Weapons, who will team with Whores, Family, and Tiger Flowers at Saint Vitus on June 13th. Tickets are on sale. As previously mentioned, Whores will also play Union Pool on June 15th with Harkonen, The Atlas Moth, and Fight Amp as part of a Brutal Panda/BV-BBG Northside event.
