Sierra Ferrell announces new LP 'Trail of Flowers' & tour, shares song ft. Nikki Lane

Writing about Sierra Ferrell‘s 2021 album Long Time Coming, I referred to her as “a very old soul, whose music often sounds like it could’ve been written in the pre-Beatles era” and said that “her songs often blur the lines between traditional bluegrass and early jazz.” Those traits still exist, but Sierra’s just-announced album Trail of Flowers seems like something much less overtly retro than Long Time Coming, down to the album artwork and the vivid accompanying photography.

“With Trail of Flowers, I wanted to make a fuller sound with bigger drums, but still stay true to the stripped-down feel of old-time music whenever it felt right,” Sierra says. “I wanted to create something that makes people feel nostalgic for the past, but excited about the future of music. I’m just trying to put words and melodies together and build it into something people can pour their feelings into, all their happiness and sorrows, so that it changes their reality a little bit and gives them some comfort. To me music is like medicine. Whenever I write a song and it feels healing to me, I know it can heal other people too.”

The album was produced by Eddie Spear (Zach Bryan, Brandi Carlile), and the first single is “Dollar Bill Bar,” which features backing vocals from Nikki Lane and Kristen Rogers and has a timeless feel that would fit in anywhere from early ’70s folk rock to today’s alternative-leaning country. Sierra also has tons of tour dates lined up, including two in NYC. She headlines Webster Hall on May 16 with support from Jake Kohn, and opens for The Avett Brothers at Forest Hills Stadium on May 17. All dates are listed below.
