Tombs at BV-Rocks Off Official CMJ Showcase 2011 (more by Jonathan McPhail)

Decibel released their list of the best LPs of 2011. The list features a few repeat offenders and not too many surprises. One record listed technically came out in 2010 (and made my list of favorites that year). You can check out the full thing below. What record do you think they left off?

Kvelertak on the Jewel (photo by Greg Cristman)

A hearty thank you goes out to Rocks Off crew and the audience who baorded the Jewel on Saturday to set sail on the East River for the BrooklynVegan/Rocks Off official CMJ showcase. The show, headlined by Kvelertak and featuring Skeletonwitch, Tombs and Psychic Limb, was the second of three NYC shows for the Norwegian band, who played a surprise show at Saint Vitus directly following their Europa gig the night before. Europa was with Skeletonwitch, Turbid North, Battlecross, and Barn Burner.
As the boat pulled away from the dock, Psychic Limb took to the stage with their nihilistic hard-grind. Vocalist Brian Montouri's stage antics were as negative and wild as usual, at one point grabbing a case of beer set aside for the bands and throwing it into the crowd and screaming "free beer" into the microphone. The crowd swarmed the case and after the sound man headed to the front to move the case behind the band (its original spot), Montouri found it again and threw it back to the frothing alcohol-hungry wolves. They won't be asked back on the boat any time soon.
Tombs followed. The cold late fall air whipped through the top tier of the boat and the Brooklyn band managed make it even a little bit more icy. Another well-executed set of black metal-tinged with hardcore from Brooklyn's finest, who performed part of their set with the Statue of Liberty as a backdrop. Surreal and awesome.
Skeletonwitch's uber-fun and tongue-in-cheek blackened thrash kicked the party into overdrive, and was followed by Nowegian party-metal crew Kvelertak. Crowd-surfing, moshpits and general dancing insanity were the center-piece of both sets, which mirrored Kvelertak's set at Europa (but differed from Saint Vitus) (I went to all three). Kelertak literally brought the boat's ceiling down with them during their set, with the bands and audience members ripping the drop ceiling and tiles out of place and leaving a huge mess by the end of the night.
Lots more pictures and video from the Rocks Off Boat Cruise, below...

Kvelertak at Parkside in SF (more by Taylor Keahey)

While we couldn't be more excited about our own official showcase with Kvelertak, Skeletowitch, Tombs and Psychic Limb aboard the Jewel on 10/22 (tickets, the only boat show during CMJ and Tombs's only appearance), there are plenty of other noteworthy heavy events that go down this week.
CMJ isn't exactly thick with heavy music events, so we've taken the liberty of expanding a bit to accomodate for punk, hardcore, dark, and anything that experiments with the darker ends of the spectrum. Our guide is below. It encompasses all of the night shows (there are no day events for heavy music, sigh). Check it out....

CMJ takes over NYC venues from October 18-22, and they just announced another round of bands that are playing. They are:
J Mascis, Shonen Knife, Gang Gang Dance, Boy & Bear, Cloud Nothings, Free Energy, T. Mills, Kendrick Lamar, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Casiokids, Oberhofer, Smif-N-Wessun, Pujol, Zomby, Joker, Painted Palms, Flatliners, Robbers on High Street, Bag Raiders, Young Buffalo, Skeletonwitch, Gary Clark, Jr. and 1, 2, 3.if you click the links above, you'll see where some of those shows are happening. The previous CMJ announcement is HERE, though collectively that's still not a lot of bands announced by CMJ yet (many more have been announced by venues). Badge info here, but remember if all you want to do is go to shows, you can also just buy tickets to those shows.

The full slate of bands for both shows will be announced soon, but meanwhile Europa has added Turbid North.
Skeletonwitch are preparing to release their new LP Forever Abomination via Prosthetic Records on 10/11. Stream two new tracks from that LP below. Show No Mercy returns with an interview and a new song from Leviathan. The interview is short and Whitehead doesn't exactly delve deep, but it and the song are both definitely worth a listen.
Cannabis Corpse will support The Black Dahlia Murder and All Shall Perish at Knitting Factory on 10/11 as part of a larger tour together. Tickets are on sale, and their full tour schedule is below.
Vanishing Leper is Justin Detore (Mind Eraser/Rival Mob/Righteous Jams etc) and Jordan Darby (Dry-Rot), and the band is currently streaming a new EP and are preparing it for a limited release on Cold Vomit. Listen below.

Ryan of Trap Them at The Studio at Webster Hall (more by Greg Cristman)

"Those of you that planned on coming this week: very sorry. Another week in the van in freezing conditions would have really done me in. And I'd rather not compromise our live show. We'll make it up to you tenfold when the new record comes out. We plan to annihilate." -[Ryan McKenney of Trap Them]
Trap Them have cancelled their remaining dates on their tour with Job For A Cowboy/Skeletonwitch/Misery Index, including Thursday's show at Santos (12/16, tickets). The band will be back in NYC in the new year to play Cake Shop with All Pigs Must Die, Black Anvil, and Psychic Limb on January 15th though. Tickets are still available.

Clinging To The Trees of A Forest Fire at SXSW (more here)

A bunch of killer shows are on the way in the coming weeks, CMJ aside. Clinging To The Trees of A Forest Fire's Songs of Ill Hope and Desperation is a pretty killer slab of blackened sludgy grind, and the band impressed with their live show at SXSW this year. The band will hit the East Coast for a string of dates including The Acheron on 10/29 with Flourishing, The Communion, and Deep in Vein. Get out to see them. Full CTTTOAFF dates are below.

Goatwhore classes up Ozzfest

Die, die, die already! After 2008's Ozzfest featured just a single date and 2009 was non-existent, I figured that maybe, just maybe, Ozzfest had finally been put to bed. I was sadly mistaken. Over six dates across the US, 2010's Ozzfest will feature appearances from (I think) an almost completely missable main stage of Ozzy Osbourne, Motley Crue, Halford, Devildriver, and Nonpoint along with a semi-respectable second stage featuring Black Label Society, Drowning Pool, Kingdom of Sorrow, Goatwhore, Skeletonwitch, Saviours, and Kataklysm. Ozzfest hits Hartford, CT on 8/21 and Camden, NJ on 8/22. Tickets go on sale 5/22. All dates and some videos are below.

Metal bar Lucky 13 owner Melody Henry is offering a reward for any tips that lead to the return of the above-pictured, life-size Exorcist prop. Red Sparowes w/ Brendan Tobin of Made Out of Babies (more here)

Red Sparowes and Doomriders will team up for a pair of NYC dates at Mercury Lounge on April 13th (tix) and 14th (tix). Tickets go on sale at noon on Friday (2/5).
Red Sparowes will be another species of bird entirely, Mockingbirds, when the band support Imaad Wasif at LA's Spaceland on 2/4. Confused? Let the band explain:
For those of you in the Los Angeles area, we are playing a mostly-improvised set of songs this Thursday night, February 4th at Spaceland under the name Mockingbirds. This is not a set of Red Sparowes songs. There will be no visuals. It's just a chance for us to play around with some musical ideas. We'll have a special guest doing vocals on one song.Red Sparowes are prepping to release their new LP The Fear is Excruciating, But Therein Lies The Answer via Sargent House on 4/6. Check out a video trailer for that LP below.
Doomriders have a few dates on their calendar as well, including a few with Skeletonwitch. All Doomriders dates are below. Meanwhile Nate Newton of Doomriders' other band, Converge, was recently mentioned in an interesting tweet/twitpic by Coalesce...
If this is a real tour, please someone kindly remove my jaw from the floor...
As pictured in the Fun Fun Fun fest pic on top, Brendan Tobin of Made Out of Babies occasionally fills in for Bryant Clifford Meyer (Isis) on guitar in Red Sparowes. MOoB will be at Union Pool with Unsane, United Nations, and Dark Vibe on 2/12 (a BV Presents prodiction). Tickets are still available, but get 'em now, this show WILL sell out.

Iron Age at The Charleston in Oct '09 (more by Chloe Rice)

If you've ever raised a can of suds to the sound of blackened-thrash, then most likely the soundtrack was Skeletonwitch. The Ohio party animals are hitting the road in February, tagging the great Iron Age, Howl, Black Tusk, Doomriders, and even Ringworm for select dates in (continued) support of their thrash-terpiece, Breathing The Fire.
While the 'witch isn't scheduled to crash land in NYC, Iron Age IS, having nailed down a date at The Charleston on Feb 16. Here's to hoping it goes better than the last time they played The Charleston. All dates below.
Also a reminder: Mammoth Grinder, which features Alex from Iron Age (on occasion), will be at The Charleston on Jan 12th.
Meanwhile, Ringworm is preparing to reissue The Promise on wax via A389 and record their new album, Scars, this spring. The Cleveland band is one of many greats scheduled for a show in Baltimore in celebration of the sixth anniversary of A389 Records and the owner's (Dom from Pulling Teeth) birthday. The two day event (Jan 8th & 9th, 2010) will feature appearances from Canadian badasses Thor (backed by Pulling Teeth), Integrity, Gehenna, Pulling Teeth, Slumlords, No Redeeming Social Value, Deathammer (members of Oak), Seraphim, and many others. Holy Terror fans are officially stoked. Tickets are still available for both the first and second nights, in addition to a two day pass. Starkweather was originally scheduled to play the show, but were forced to drop out:
If you look at your hand and feel the tender center of your palm...well a few days ago, the drummer tore that at his day job. We waited a few days to find out what's going on before making an official announcement, and unfortunately it's going to put him out of commission for a while. [Vocalist] Rennie said his hand looked like a catcher's mitt. So regrettably to their disappointment, mine, and yours they had to bail out of the show.Gray Ghost has been added as Starkweather's not-to-shabby replacement. The band released their Deep In The Shallow End on Chainsaw Safety Records and are offering a taste of said release for download above.
Integrity and Seraphim have a combo pack due this week on A389 which includes the To Die For 10" (first time on wax), as well as a Seraphim 7". The pre-order is currently sold out. Though To Die For isn't available, you can download virtually all of Integrity's other releases for FREE, including Those Who Fear Tomorrow available above.

Skeletonwitch

Metal Underground: You've toured with some great bands already. Like you said, you just got off the Children of Bodom tour, Danzig, which had to be really cool, and many other people. Who's been your favorite to tour with?Metallica, schmetallica. The biggest metal band EVAR was filling MSG at that moment, but metalheads rejoiced for a different reason in Brooklyn, as Skeletonwitch and Black Anvil destroyed Union Pool on Saturday night (11/14). It was the second night in a row of the three-night Blackened Music Series weekend which ended Sunday at Le Poisson Rouge with Shrinebuilder. It started Friday at Union Pool with Krallice - a mayhem-filled show. I didn't think it could get any crazier on Saturday, but once Skeletonwitch demanded a circle pit, and GOT ONE, I knew I was wrong.Scott (of Skeletonwitch): I don't think I could pick a favorite. We haven't had a bad experience. Especially, the bigger tours; definitely not. Maybe some smaller, earlier tours when we were in the pick-up truck which just sucked sometimes on our own account. But, everybody's been cool to us; Glen Danzig was fucking awesome. One of the coolest guys ever, took care of us and everything. Same thing with Amon Amarth and same thing with Bodom.
Chance (of Skeletonwitch): Yeah, we would run out of beer, Bodom would [say]," Take some of ours, we have too much." I have negative [to say] about the large tours. I'm glad to be a part of it.
Scott: A lot of bands won't tell you if it was bad. But, really, it wasn't. Like, I got nothing; don't have any dirt on anybody. Everybody was cool.
There are many that do blackened thrash, thrash, or some variant thereof, but what separates the 'witch (and Municipal Waste, DRI, and a select few others for that matter) from the pack is that the boys don't take themselves too seriously. Every song was introduced by a tongue in cheek intro ("This one's about Satannnnnnnnn!") by vocalist Chance, and followed by the nail-cuffed Ohioan zig-zagging across the stage, pointing at audience members and crowdsurfers while screeching out lyrics. Many PBRs went into the wildman's perfomrnace/theatricality, and all I could do was beam from ear to ear. Skeletonwitch is a very fun live band.
The show was the last US date in 2009 for the hard-touring Skeletonwitch. They're prepping to hit Europe in the tail end of November and December. All dates and more pictures from Union Pool, below...

Skeletonwitch at Scion Rock Fest (more by Steven Brown)

Skeletonwitch must pretty much live in their van. Luckily that means that NYC has another SW date to look forward to, 11/14 at Union Pool with the incredamazing Black Anvil! Tickets are only $10 and currently on sale.
The Skeletonwitch show is one day of a "Blackened Weekend" from The Blackened Music Series, which also features the highly anticipated return of Krallice with Malkuth, Liturgy, and Orphan at Union Pool on 11/13, and the BV-sponsored Shrinebuilder/Rwake/Liturgy jawdropper at Le Poisson Rouge on 11/15 (tickets).
Liturgy is also playing with Malkuth at the previously discussed Mt Eerie / No Kids / Tara Jane O'Neil throwdown at Market Hotel on Halloween. Want to go? I HAVE A PAIR OF TICKETS AND A COPY OF Mt. Eerie's Wind Poems on LP for giveaway. Learn more at the bottom of this post.
Skeletonwitch recently dropped their new LP, Breathing The Fire and are currently on tour with Trap Them, Toxic Holocaust and The Black Dahlia Murder. That tour stirred up some controversy down south when they tried to play a Christian venue. Check out the news videos below along with a statement from Joel Grind of Toxic Holocaust, and all Skeletonwitch and Orphan tour dates, below....

"How about this fuckin' lineup man? Whoever put this thing together, I'd like to shake their hand" - CT of Rwake
Boris (Steven Brown)

I'd like to think it was the jawdropping lineup decreed by the gods upon Mt Scion that brought people out in droves to The Masquerade in Atlanta on February 28th, but I would imagine that some of it was also due to "free show" factor. Either way, there is something ridiculawesome about bands as great as Harvey Milk, Wolves In The Throne Room, and Coalesce having to turn people away due to reaching capacity. That is my idea of sweet metal justice... some of my current favorite bands in front of the audiences they deserve.
The Masquerade is a 2+ level club. The biggest stage, dubbed "Heaven", is located on the second floor and houses somewhere in the neighborhood of 1000 people. Two adjacent clubs on the main level, "Hell" & "Purgatory", house considerably less: "Hell" is primarily a dance floor, so there were some obstructed sightlines. "Purgatory" had multiple tiers, no elevated stage and very little room in front of the band. Behind the venue in a grassy area which was muddy due to the prior night's rain, a 4,000 person capacity tent was constructed for the main stage.

As we sit idly with Static Tensions awaiting the release of the new Kylesa LP, the band have dropped off a few new tour dates and are streaming the new track "Said & Done" at their myspace.
Skeletonwitch (who recently played Public Assembly as part of Show No Mercy) and Black Tusk will team up with Kylesa for a few dates sandwiched between Kylesa's appearance at the Scion Rock Fest and their upcoming tour with The Haunted, Nachtmystium, and Intronaut (that hits BB Kings on 4/19 and tickets are still on sale).
The new dates include a stop at SXSW in Austin, with Skeletonwitch & Black Tusk, but also with Rwake, Warship, and Dixie Witch as part of the Tone Deaf Touring Showcase on March 20th @ Red 7.
If for some god-forsaken reason you have forgotten about the Kylesa show TONIGHT (1/28) at The Charleston with Tombs, Tournament, Black Anvil, and The Brass, let this serve as a reminder. Lots of heavy riffing and bowel-shaking pleasure lies ahead.... but get there early... doors at 8PM. New (less secretive) flyer below.
Kylesa will also be at the equally earth-moving show tommorrow (1/29) at the Bowery Ballroom with crust legends Amebix, Thought Crime, & Atakke.... but unfortunately, that show is now sold-out.
Skeletonwitch played the last edition of Show No Mercy. The Feb 15th edition at Public Assembly will feature Ocean, Salome, Riff Cannon & Batillus.

Kylesa @ Music Hall Of Williamsburg (More By Tim Griffin)
Do you enjoy the hard rockin sounds of southern metal but have an un-natural fear of crust punk legends? Want to see a certifiably badass band tear you a new one in a room the size of someone's basement? Well friends, you are in luck! It looks like Kylesa have scheduled a show at The Charleston (!!!) with Tombs (!!), Tournament, and Black Anvil(!) as part of Hardcore Night on Jan 28th, the day before they take the stage opening for Amebix (tickets for that show here). Charleston flyer and Kylesa's full tour schedule below. That includes the previously mentioned dates with The Haunted.
In other Kylesa news, the band recently announced their new album Static Tensions, due in March on Prosthetic with 20 Buck Spin doing the honors on the vinyl tip. Look for the vinyl to be released in two versions: a regular edition with a single LP with an eight-page LP-size booklet and a "deluxe", a limited-to-500 gatefold 2xLP on colored vinyl mastered at 45 RPM! Fellow Savannah madman John Dyer Baizley of Baroness will do the
artwork honors. That's it to the right.
Kylesa also announced they are on board for the holy shit fest, I mean, the Scion Rock Fest at The Masquerade in Atlanta, GA on Feb 28th with Mastodon, Neurosis, High on Fire, Boris, 1349, Cryptopsy, Torche, Nachtmystium, Wolves in the Throne Room, Baroness, Harvey Milk, Zoroaster, Withered, Krallice, Toxic Holocaust, Skeletonwitch, Rwake, A Storm of Light, Warbringer, Salome, Suidakra, Tyr, and Alestorm. That shit is FREE. More info forthcoming.
Kylesa, as well as Rwake, Zoroaster, and many other luminaries, will be featured in Slow Southern Steel, a documentary profiling the southern metal scene. Details about screenings up north are sketch, but we'll let you know if anything arises. Slow Southern Steel is directed by CT, aka the razorblade throat behind Rwake.
Tip o' the hat to Invisible Oranges, who recently spotted a flickr page belonging to Laura Pleasants of Kylesa.
Skeletonwitch will be here on Sunday 1/11 with Cannabis Corpse and Attake. Attake is also playing the Amebix/Kylesa show.
A Storm of Light will headline Europa on 2/15 with Amenra and Scion-ers Zoroaster. Tickets are still on sale.

Cannabis Corpse (featuring members of Municipal Waste) are currently working hard at a follow-up EP to this year's Tube of The Resinated (get it?). Look for that on the mighty Tank Crimes in the coming year.
