Gehenna at Acheron, Aug 2012 (more by Fred Pessaro // BBG)
Good news/bad news situation here. Bad news? Radiation Blackbody has dropped off the previously discussed Catharsis show at Acheron on January 19. The good news? They've been replaced...... by GEHENNA. That's right, the infamous ones will team with their old split-mates to bring their nihilistic black-metal-induced hardcore back to NYC. The band will join Deathcycle (reunion) and Withdrawal for a whopper of a show that will follow ANOTHER whopper of a show the same day, the previously-mentioned late matinee with Vile Gash, Society Nurse, Slices (who released one of my favorite LPs of last year, this is their final NYC appearance!) and Believer/Law. Tickets are on sale for Catharsis/Gehenna, Vile Gash, or both together.
Of course Gehenna is on the East Coast to play A389 in Baltimore that weekend. Though advance tickets for the shows are sold-out, most of the bands will ALSO play pre-shows/matinees that have tickets at the door.
Catharsis's dates have grown since we last spoke, blossoming into an East Coast tour. All Catharsis dates and Gehenna video are listed below.

One Tail One Head at Inferno Festival, April 2012 (more by Fred Pessaro // BBG)
2012 was a year of considerable personal growth for me, as a person, a photographer and a music fan. As I recounted in my favorite photos of 2012, I got to shoot some of my favorite bands of all time and travel the globe in search of new ones. The beginning of the year was spent dealing with personal drama, and if it werent for key records in my life I shudder to think at where I would be right now. To every band on this list and many who aren't, I cant thank you enough.
First order of business, my musical pallette is much much larger than just a series of metal records. This is NOT a list of my favorite records of the year, because that would surely include other entries from across many different genres. This is, however, a list of some of my favorite heavier records.
To me, the term "heavy" can be defined in many ways, from the elongated riff on a doom record to a noise squall to a particularly punishing punk-rock beatdown. While most of the following records are "heavy" in the traditional "distortion and loud guitars" sense, a few are not. You'll see metal, you'll see deathrock, you'll see raw punk, you'll see hardcore, and many spots in between in the numbered list below. And to answer your question, yes you'll see Swans... right beside D-Clone and Asphyx.
My favorite records of 2012 are below. Hopefully you'll see a connection in favorites or maybe discover something new. Regardless, I hope you found your own favorites of the year whether in this list or outside of it.
Christopher Hansell of Warthog (ex-The Men) has dropped off his top 10 releases of 2012, as well as other thoughts on the passing year. Check out those below.
Warthog (which also features members of Nude Beach) is scheduled to play Worcester, MA at The Beacon on 12/15 with Who Killed Spikey Jacket, in addition to their previously discussed show with Inmates at Acheron on 1/12.
Hansell is also involved in power electronics crew Foreplay who will play the West Coast later this month with the great Pharmakon and Soren (of Rosenkopf). Dates are below. Soren will also play NYC at Saint Vitus on 1/5 as part of the Dysrhythmia/Wreck & Reference show (tickets).
Hansell's 2012 Top 10 list is below, along with video and a list of all tour dates.

Vile Gash at Chaos in Tejas 2011 (more by Fred Pessaro // BBG)
Who doesn't love an afternoon of killer punk and hardcore? Negative hardcore brutality from Vile Gash will headline a matinee, with Society Nurse, Slices (who released their Still Cruising earlier this year) and Believer/Law at Acheron on January 19. Show is at 5PM and ticketing info is on the way. The show is part of a larger set of dates for the final three bands on the bill, with NYC's Believer /Law also set to play WIERD soon.
Check out live video and audio below.
Pittsburgh's Slices returns with another wrecking ball of noise-infested nihilism on Still Cruising, the band's latest offering via Iron Lung Records, follow-up to last year's Kemado-released Modern Bride / Chump Change 7", and sequel to their 2010 debut LP Cruising on Iron Lung. For the unfamiliar, Slices utilize a mix of razor-sharp hardcore and noise-punk that recalls favorites like Brainbombs or Pissed Jeans. Clocking in at a taut 20-minutes, Slices' compelling new offering never outwears its welcome and cements the band's vitriolic virtuosity.
Look for the record soon via Iron Lung Records, and stream five tracks from the LP and a song from their Kemado 7", below...

Unearthly Trance at Saint Vitus (more by Greg Cristman)
Unearthly Trance shows are few and far between nowadays, but the band will awaken from their live slumber to play Acheron on March 1st as part of a bill that includes The Communion, Water Torture, and Syphilitic Lust. $8 gets you in the door. Check out the flyer below.
Horseback has completed their new LP Half Blood due via Relapse this Spring. Details are limited so far, but Roadburn has more details about the record and its "amalgamation of drone, doom, black-metal, psychedelia, post-rock, noise, and ambience recorded with a wide array of instruments including guitar, bass, drums, keys, piano, bells, contact mics, field recordings, drum programming, noise and various signal processors." Yep, sounds like a Horseback record!
Check out a new Noisear track from their upcoming three-way split with Antigama and The Kill above. The track features vocals by Mitchell Luna of ex-Maruta fame.
Perdition will join Varix, Murderer and Sad Boys at Heaven Street Records TONIGHT (2/3). Door entry will cost you zilch and beers will cost you a dollar. Sounds like a winning night of furious, crusty punk to me.
Drainland will share a split 7" with Crows due on Suburban Mayhem Records. Stream the material from that release below.
One interesting and important footnote to the upcoming Behold the Arctopus show at Saint Vitus on Feb 24th... Support will come from Mindless Blasting and Geryon, two bands which feature Mick Barr with Nondor Nevai and Nick McMaster with Lev Weinstein respectively. Basically, a night of Krallice-related projects... should be interesting. Tickets are on sale.
No NYC dates, but Ringworm, Cancer Bats & Primitive are touring from Ohio to SXSW and then back to Ohio together. OFF! were also recently announced on the SXSW lineup.
Mastodon/Opeth/Ghost tickets went on sale earlier today.
Saturday's Ceremony, Pissed Jeans, The Rival Mob, Hoax, Kim Phuc, Gods and Queens show @ Le Poisson Rouge is now sold out.
Converge announced a tour.
YOB recently visited NJ with Tool. Right before that, they headlined their own show in Chicago with Anatomy of Habit and an opening set by YOB's Mike Scheidt who is going to release a solo album this year on Thrill Jockey. BV Chicago has pics from the Chicago show.
A list of suggested NYC shows with song streams, the "Beaten & Left Blind" video by Landmine Marathon, and a set of European SUNN O))) tour dates, below...
Pittsburgh's Slices caused a bit of a stir with 2010's Cruising, a barrage of hardcore and noise rock that hit on Iron Lung Records last year (yes, the label for the band Iron Lung who recently dropped the new Dead Language). Now the band, which features members of Brain Handle, Warzone Womyn, and others will release a new 7" this week via Kemado (the label that also just out Futur Skullz). The two song monster features the Pissed Jeans-y opening track "Modern Bride" (streaming below) and the flip "Chump Change". Fans of negative and nihilistic hardcore take note.
Stream "Modern Bride" below and check out some live video
