Peaches / Converge / Antemasque / just a skeleton chillin'
Mostly inspired and occasionally inane, Antemasque carried that same agitated vigor and theatrics of prior projects into their set on the Orange stage Friday night, starting 15 minutes late with "In the Lurch" and walloping through. Almost immediately one thing was clear: There's no one true frontman.Austin's Fun Fun Fun Fest kicked off on Friday (11/6) and day 1 was loaded with great sets: Schoolboy Q, Converge, Drive Like Jehu, Babes In Toyland, The Dwarves, Cheap Trick, Hudson Mohawke, Rae Sremmurd, King Khan & BBQ, Mikal Cronin, Peaches, Parquet Courts, Cedric and Omar's Mars Volta/ATDI offshoot Antemasque with Travis Barker, and still plenty more. We already pictures of Shamir's set and one set of Drive Like Jehu, and we've got more DLJ shots, pics of everyone mentioned above, and more in this post.
Each member performed with violent energy, demanding attention. [Omar] Rodríguez-López flailed on his guitar wildly and somehow maintained precision in his often math-y riffs, while his bassist brother Marfred [Rodríguez-López] recklessly knocked around. Blink-182's Travis Barker held down the middle, pummeling the drum kit and continuously evoking drawn-out yells of "Traaaaaavis!" from the crowd.
[Cedric] Bixler-Zavala also hurled his body across the stage in ways that made it unclear whether he was possessed by the music or some sort of Satanic presence, inexplicably hiding under a white tarp at one point as he sang. [Austin Chronicle]
FFF Fest continued on Saturday (11/7) and it wraps up today (Sunday, 11/8). Stay tuned for more coverage.

As mentioned, Slow Magic is playing Glasslands tonight (4/24) with Beat Culture and Bright Future. Tickets are still available. While working on his debut LP, the enigmatic electronic artist made time to film a segment for IntoTheWoods.TV's "Carsick" video series. In it he performs his single "On Yr Side" while riding in a car through the Boise desert while he was in the area for the 2013 Treefort Fest. Mainly he plays a drum on his lap to a backing track, but like his similarly minimal live performances, it is strangely compelling. Watch it below.
Slow Magic wraps up his North American tour in Chicago on Saturday (4/27), and then heads to Europe. All tour dates are listed below.

Slow Magic @ Pianos, CMJ 2012 (more by Amanda Hatfield)
Enigmatic artist Slow Magic was one our pleasant discoveries at CMJ 2012. We caught him at a day party set at Pianos and his laptop-and-drum setup (while wearing a big mask) was more alluring that we expected. His recorded music is pretty enticing too, especially if you still have a place in your heart for the genre formerly known as chillwave, though if his most recent single, the slinky "On Yr Side," is any indication, he's moved past that as well. Slow Magic is working on a new album as we speak but you can stream "On Yr Side" and other previoulsy-released tracks below.
Slow Magic will be leaving his mysterious mountain home to tour this spring, which will kick off in Austin for SXSW and will eventually make its way to NYC for a show at Glasslands on April 24. Tickets for that show go on sale Friday (2/22) at 7 AM. So, um, set your alarm. All tour dates are listed below.

Slow Magic / Levek / TOPS @ Pianos 10/16/2012
It seems like forever ago (only last week) but the first day of CMJ (Tuesday, 10/16) back before we became covered in handstamps and wristbands, we headed to the Lower East for early day parties, like the one Portals thew at Pianos. There we caught Montreal's dreamy and danceable TOPS, Florida's breezy, jammy Levek, Delaware trio Mean Lady, plus Brooklynites Young Magic, and the similarly named but very different Slow Magic, whose laptop-and-drums style (while masked) was much more aluring than we thought it was going to be (definitely the pleasant surprise of the afternoon).
More pictures from the show are below.
