J Dilla

Slum Village, the group which once counted the late J Dilla as a member, are set to to release a new album, Evolution, this June, and they'll be kicking off an international tour this week in support of it. That tour hits NYC on April 30 at Santos Party House. The show is looking pretty solid, with music by Mick Boogie and DJ Martin, and performances by Tanya Morgan and Skyzoo, in addition to The Action Figures, Citi Lightz, and Singapore Kane. Tickets for that show are on sale now. All dates are listed below.

In related news, two previously unreleased J Dilla songs have surfaced on a new 12": "Trucks" (which prominently samples Gary Numan's "Cars") and "Anthem." Both feature Dilla rapping, in addition to producing. Stream them below.

J.Dilla

Attention eBay-ers, prepare to get busy. J.Dilla's record collection has been returned from the record store to the Yancey family and now is available to the entire world for purchase...:

Now with the verification from Ma Dukes, a limited amount of J Dilla's personal record collection is being offered for sale with a signed and numbered certificate from Ma Dukes!

These records come from the storage unit that Dilla and Ma Dukes moved his records and personal recordings in after his Detroit basement flooded. Then shortly thereafter he moved to Los Angeles. The storage unit was left by Dilla and taken care of by Ma Dukes but lost once Dilla fell ill and priorities changed. After 5 years it was recently found again. The back payments and fees were paid and Ma Dukes was reunited with the contents she last saw just before leaving to L.A. to take care of Dilla. A planned 2 week trip that turned into years.

All the J Dilla (Slum Village...etc.) test pressings, personal recordings, personal items, tapes, along with a large portion of the record collection are being held by Ma Dukes for inclusion in a possible future Hip Hop museum and upcoming record release projects.

$29.99 gets you a record, Ma Dukes choice (no requests), from James Yancey's personal collection. Buy it now at eBay, it comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.

Evidence of Dilated Peoples. One of the illest rollercoaster MCs of all time
Evidence

Evidence is prepping his second solo disc away from Dilated Peoples. Cats & Dogs will be released via Rhymesayers on 9/27. The LP will see him team with names like Slug of Atmosphere, Raekwon, Aloe Blacc (who plays NYC soon), Prodigy, Aesop Rock, Roc Marciano, and others, and features "To Be Continued..." which appears in (awesome) video form below. That's a still of it above, shot almost entirely DIY on a rollercoaster. Evidence will also hit the road for a string of US dates, hitting Rock The Bells in NYC on September 3rd. Tickets are still available. All dates are below.

Check out a new Roc Marciano track with Oh No (aka Gangrene) and Alchemist called "Jet Luggage" below. Roc Marciano will also appear at Rock The Bells 2011.

After many long years in label limbo, it was starting to seem like Saigon would be best known as "that rapper from Entourage". The MC's long-shelved LP The Greatest Story Never Told was a step away from being a fairy tale with the almost incredulous guests and producers reportedly making appearances. After four years of anticipation and frankly almost as much doubt that the project would ever come out, The Greatest Story Never Told FINALLY dropped earlier this year with appearances from Jay-Z, Q-Tip, Lee Fields & The Expressions, Bun B and others, and production from Just Blaze, Kanye West, or Buckwild on virtually every track. FreeOnSmash will release his follow-up this month, War Music. Stream a track from that below.

Catch Saigon on August 5th at Knitting Factory in Brooklyn, tickets are on sale.

Knitting Factory will also host Slum Village on July 21st. Tickets are on sale. Slum Village are down to one original member, T3, who released the 3ILLER EP yesterday (7/5). Stream a sampler from that EP below.

D12 is scheduled to play BB King's on July 19th, and though the bio/and picture shows the contrary, I am guessing that Proof won't be on hand for the show. No word on if Eminem will make an appearance either. Tickets are on sale for the show which includes appearances fron King Gordy and Lethillweapon.

Pharoahe Monch has multiple appearances coming up over the next week. He was recently spotted backstage at Best Buy Theater's Salute to Hip Hop. Pictures from that HERE.

All streams/videos and Evidence tour dates are below. While you're there, check out a video of Michael Rapaport and Peanut Butter Wolf shopping at Amoeba.

Black Milk at SXSW (more by Samantha Marble)
Black Milk

BrooklynVegan is proud to announce the release party for one of 2010's most highly anticipated underground hip hop albums, Black Milk's Album of The Year. Brooklyn's Southpaw will be the venue and September 14th is the date (also the album's release date). The show will feature appearances from the man himself along with Sean Price, Elzhi of Slum Village, and Guilty Simpson among other special guests still to be announced. Tickets are on sale.

UPDATE: DJ Spinna, who is also spinning the Michael Jackson birthday party in Prospect Park this Sunday, has been added to the Southpaw show.

Individually, Sean Price, Black Milk, and Guilty Simpson is an incredible lineup, but in addition, the threesome combine to form Random Axe. Ramdom Axe have completed an LP that, according to a recent interview, will see a release in "October/November". Keep on the look out for that one.

Elzhi is 1/2 of the current Slum Village, who recently released their new album Villa Manifesto via E1 Music, the first since the passing of Slum Village founding member Baatin and ex-SV member J.Dilla. Elzhi released his (almost entirely) Black Milk-produced solo album The Preface in 2008.

The rest of Random Axe has been busy with their own projects, as well. Sean Price released the Kimbo Price mixtape in the tail end of last year, and is prepping to release Mic Tyson on Duck Down. Guilty Simpson's new LP, um, OJ Simpson hit stores in middle May via Stones Throw. The LP features production by Madlib on all tracks.

Some video, including the recently released Black Milk clip "Deadly Medley" is below...

Organized Konfusion @ APW
OK

"Hip-hop gets odd treatment at festivals like All Points West, where most of the lineup leans toward indie-rock. The rock acts, beyond the name-brand headliners, are current: darlings of the club and college circuit and the blogs that support it. But the hip-hop is retro: representatives of past eras alongside younger acts who have chosen old-school styles." [NY Times]
Now that APW and it's associated parties are in the rear view, we're beginning to get a picture of hip hop this fall as those artists lay out shows of their own!
"Forget about whether Brooklyn was in the house; "Where all my trigonometry majors at?" Pharoahe Monch asked the audience. O.C., a rapper associated on and off with Organized Konfusion, also showed up during the [APW] set. Prince Po took pains to deny Internet reports of dissension between group members. And true to the luck that ran through Organized Konfusion's career, the set took place during the afternoon's rain squall; there were only a handful of listeners." [NY Times]
First up, Organized Konfusion, with APW behind them, is back on the train having scheduled a new date in NYC at BB King's on 9/25 with Poor Righteous Teachers. Rock dis funky joint! Tickets are on sale.

Secondly, The Wallabee Champ was recently in NYC to kick off APW at Nokia Theatre with Red & Meth. Video from the Michael Jackson tribute portion of the night below. And Ghostface will be in the building AGAIN on 11/11, as he gets set to tear down BB King's! Tickets are on sale.

Ghostface's partner in rhyme, Raekwon is FINALLY going to release Only Built For Cuban Linx II (9/8!!!) and the cover features Tony Starks, much like the first Cuban Linx. Dig on that below too.

Also coming up at BB King's is the previously mentioned Slum Village show with Reflection Eternal on 8/28. After the shocking passing of Slum Village's Baatin settled in, I wondered if the crew would carry on? Slum Village (which also counted J Dilla as a member) was T3 and Elzhi until Baatin recently rejoined the crew, and now it looks more and more like that is how they will be again:

Slum Village will remain on the bill despite the July 31 death of group member Titus "Baatin" Glover.... A cause of death has not been determined pending the results of toxicology reports, according to local authorities.

"Baatin will be missed," Slum Village's T3 said in a press statement. "I'm glad we got a chance to work together before he passed. We lost another Slum soldier, a dear friend and a brother. He touched many lives." [livedaily]

Slum Village 2009, now exactly the same as Slum Village 2007. Tickets are still available for BB Kings, and more dates have been announced (below).

Full Raekwon, Ghostface, and Reflection Eternal tour details, cover art, videos, and all pictures of Organized Konfusion at All Points West (including some that weren't posted before), below...

Sad news to report from the Detroit hip hop scene....

Slum Village

Titus (Baatin) Glover, the Detroit rapper who co-founded the much-acclaimed Slum Village, has died.

The circumstances of his death remain unknown, [but] ...Baatin's body was found [Saturday] morning in the 14000 block of Anglin Street, said family friend Ty Townson, who was at the scene as Baatin's body was taken to the Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office.

Glover's mother, Alberta Glover, said she didn't know anything about how her son died. She said she's waiting for the medical examiner to tell the family something either Sunday or Monday.... Funeral arrangements are not yet set.

Baatin, who turned 35 in March, left Slum Village in 2002, later telling the Free Press he had been diagnosed with schizophrenia. He continued to record and play occasional solo dates before returning to the Slum fold for the group's upcoming album, Villa Manifesto, due Sept. 22. -[Detroit Free Press]

Baatin recently performed with Slum Village in NY at Rock The Bells and was scheduled to perform at BB Kings with the reunited Reflection Eternal.

A memorial tribute was held Sunday night at 5 Elements Gallery in Detroit.

Talib Kweli + Hi-Tek = Reflection Eternal
Refelction Eternal

Rock The Bells 2009 is SUNDAY (7/19, tix still avail). Reflection Eternal is among those scheduled to play the NY date @ Jones Beach, and they are scheduled to make their NYC return on August 28th at BB King's with three others on the Rock The Bells bill: the reunion of Slum Village (sans J.Dilla of course), Slaughterhouse (aka Joe Budden, Royce Da 5'9, Joell Ortiz & Crooked I), and freestyle kingpin Supernatural. No word on whether the show, billed as "The Rock The Bells Club Tour" is part of a larger tour (sure f'n sounds like it) or when tickets go on sale.

Reflection Eternal recently dropped a new single via iTunes, "Back Again", accompanied with a video that is viewable below. No word on the status of their new LP, tentatively titled Trainspotting, or if "Back Again" will appear on it.

Meanwhile, Rock The Bells 2009 has posted the set times for Jones Beach, with one suspicious hole slotted for "Special Guest" at 5:20 on the main stage. Hmmmm..... Set times for the show are below.

Slaughterhouse recently dropped a video for "The One" from their upcoming self-titled LP due on 8/11 via E1. Check that out below.

The other half of Black Star with Talib Kweli, aka Mos Def, has released the absolutely sick new record The Ecstatic. Mighty Mos is scheduled to play Governor's Island on 9/12. Tickets are on sale.

Videos and Rock The Bells set times below...

Nas @ Rock The Bells 2008 in Jones Beach (more by villageslum.com)
Nas

OK, so it's not as much a big bang as last year (A Tribe Called Quest reunion) or the one before (Rage Against The Machine reunion), but Rock The Bells 2009 does have some interesting artists on the lineup. Besides a welcome reunion (Reflection Eternal) (Talib Kweli & Hi-Tek), one suspect one (House of Pain) and some great repeat offenders (Nas, RZA, Raekwon, MOP, Sage Francis, Slum Village), this year's Rock The Bells also boasts an Outkast (Big Boi), a windy city fave (Common), and a true sicko (Necro). The full lineup is:
