Chuck Ragan & The Camaraderie
Chuck Ragan

Hot Water Music co-frontman Chuck Ragan will release his fourth solo album, Til Midnight, on March 25 via SideOneDummy. Like most of his solo material, it sees Chuck pulling more from folk than punk, though its first single, "Something May Catch Fire," is one of his more layered solo cuts, complete with rollicking drums and a busy fiddle line. That track just premiered over at The A.V. Club, and you can listen below.

Chuck also announced a tour with The White Buffalo and Johnny Two Bags, which comes to NYC for a show on April 18 at Irving Plaza. For the tour, he'll be joined by his backing band The Camaraderie, which features Todd Beene of Lucero, David Hidalgo Jr of Social Distortion, and others. Tickets for that show go on sale Friday (2/21) at 10 AM with Live Nation and Music Geeks presales starting Wednesday (2/19) at 10 AM.

All dates are listed, along with the new song stream, below...

NXNE

While Bonnaroo is happening in Tennessee and Northside is going down here in Brooklyn, up in Toronto, ON it's time again for NXNE. Much like SXSW, the festival spans film, interactive, comedy and art, but the music portion runs tonight (6/12) and runs through Sunday (6/16) at various venues all over city. The centerpieces are the free big concerts thrown at Younge Dundas Square. This year's Social Distortion on Thursday (6/13), The National on Friday (6/14), Billy Talent on Saturday (6/15), and Ludacris with Joey Bada$$, Deniro Farrar, The Underachievers, Fat Tony, and more on Sunday (6/16).

Our friends at M for Montreal are throwing two parties at NXNE. The first is at Sneaky Dee's on Friday with with Mauves, Webster, UN, Brazos, plus Julian Lynch and The Luyas who are on a collaborative tour (that plays Northside too). There's also a "special guest" at 2 AM and for the real partiers, Psyche Tounge at 3 AM.

Then on Saturday (6/15) its the Panache Booking and M for Montreal Bruise Cruise (which they did last year too) with Mikal Cronin, We are Wolves, Odonis Odonis and Fat Tony... on a boat! Flyer for both parties is below.

There are over 1000 acts playing NXNE this year, including Fucked Up, Dan Deacon, Villagers, Still Corners, FLAG, Mikal Cronin, Calexico, Why?, Merchandise, just to name a new -- check out the full NXNE schedule. BV photographer David Andrako will be there covering the action so look for pictures in the coming days.

Sloan, who moved from Halifax, NS to Toronto a long time ago, are celebrating the 21st anniversary of their label, murderecords, with a party at Great Hall on Friday June 14. Sloan will perform the entirety of their first EP, Peppermint, which was the label's innagural release, The Super Friendz (which at times included Sloan's Chris Murphy) and and Mike O'Neill who some of you may remember from his '90s band The Inbreds. There's also a limited-edition box set of murderecords 12 7" singles they released in the '90s that will come with a commemorative book. Only 500 of these are being made and will go on sale next week via Sloan's Website. Sloan, you may remember, also recently released a hardcore tribute 7". You can check out a video about the murderecords box set, along with a flyer for the NXNE party, below.

In addition to those free shows (and the other ones we mentioned above), there's a bunch of other shows we're looking forward to at NXNE. Take a look at what those are, and where/when you can see them, below...

Coachella 2013 - Week 2 in Pictures - Day 3
Coachella 2013 - Week 2 in Pictures - Day 3

After two weekends, Coachella 2013 officially came to a close this past Sunday (4/21) with sets from Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Wu-Tang Clan, Grimes, Vampire Weekend, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jessie Ware, Tame Impala, and more. Pictures of those artists, and some of the comparatively smaller but not less exciting artists that we missed at Weekend 1, like Ghost B.C., The Three O'Clock, DIIV, and Thee Oh Sees, are in this post.

We didn't catch James Blake this time like we did the first time, but he brought out RZA (who was there with Wu-Tang Clan) to perform their song, "Take A Fall For Me," which appears on James' new album, Overgrown. You can watch a video of that below.

In case you haven't been keeping up with our coverage, pictures of Weekend 2 Day 1 are HERE and Weekend 2 Day 2 are HERE. For Weekend 1 pictures, check out day 1 (HERE and HERE), day 2 (HERE) and day 3 (HERE).

Starland Ballroom (more by Tim Griffin)
Starland BAllroom

Another victim of Sandy. The NJ music venue writes:

A MESSAGE FROM THE STARLAND BALLROOM:

The last two weeks in New Jersey have been a testament to our state's resilience. We've witnessed New Jersey's worst days, but also its greatest humanity. We've seen destruction, but we've also seen ho
pe, hard work and determination.

Our situation at Starland is a microcosm of these scenarios -- yet one we realize is significantly less important than one's home, family or livelihood. Hurricane Sandy devastated our electrical system and damaged our sound, lighting, heating / cooling and plumbing systems - all necessary ingredients in operating a public venue. Given the demand for these components in the regional housing and commercial sectors, we do not anticipate being able to open again until Spring 2013.

Speaking of 2013, it's the year in which we intend to celebrate Starland Ballroom's 10th anniversary. So we're dedicated to taking this time to rebuild the state's best concert venue, and make it even better. We'll take inspiration from all of our New Jersey neighbors who are working hard to get their lives back to normal. When it's all said and done, we'll be here for some of the best live concert celebrations available.

You can help in this effort: Send us an email to info@starlandballroom.com with your suggestions and ideas on how to make Starland even better. We'll read every last one of them.

Most of our shows will be canceled. A few will be moved to new locations. We'll have them listed here and at Starlandballroom.com ASAP.

Fans holding tickets to the canceled shows will receive a full refund, including fees. If you bought tickets online or via phone, you will receive an automatic refund within 7-10 business days. If you bought your tickets from a Ticketmaster retail outlet, you may return your tickets to that exact location for your refund. Tickets purchased here at Starland can be turned in for a full refund plus service fees during new hours of operation - Thursdays and Fridays from 3-6pm and Saturdays from 11am-2pm. The Box Office will not be open on Thanksgiving. Fans holding tickets to relocated shows, but unable to attend due to the new location, are also entitled to a refund. 2012 Starland SeasonPass holders will be permitted to use their passes for shows in 2013.

We regret that any of these shows are going away, but not as much as we regret the pain, suffering and destruction experienced by our customers throughout the Garden State. Much like the spirit of New Jersey, you can't stop rock n' roll. And we don't intend to.

Jersey proud, Starlanders. We'll see you soon.

Damn. See below for a list of shows affected:

Sandy can't stop Halloween (photo via)

We just posted the many NYC cancellations for tonight/Halloween (though more shows are still happening tonight than previous nights), and there's already a few cancellations being announced for Thursday (11/1).

The Meat Loaf show at Beacon Theatre, which was supposed to happen on Thursday has been postponed to a later date. An announcement on the new date is forthcoming.

Woodkid was forced to cancel his dates in NYC, San Francisco, and LA due to the hurricane and its effect on major airports. The NYC show was supposed to happen Thursday (11/1) at Irving Plaza and will be rescheduled to a TBA date. Tickets are refundable at the reseller.

As mentioned, the ESG show at Bowery Electric with Sinkane has been postponed to a later date TBD in December/January. The Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black show that was moved to Thursday from Tuesday (10/30) has been cancelled.

As mentioned, all Dita Von Teese shows have been cancelled.

The Squarepusher, Bonobo (DJ), Holy Fuck, and Mount Kimbie show at Terminal 5 is still on, and there will be drink specials before Squarepusher's headlining set. Squarepusher just played Moogfest in Asheville over the weekend, but had to cancel other dates on the tour after that, including his show in Silver Spring, MD on Monday (10/29) and his Boston show tonight (10/31).

The Freelance Whales show at Webster Hall is still on too, but with recent reports from ConEd about the power situation in lower Manhattan, it wouldn't be surprising if that show gets cancelled. UPDATE: Yep, postponed.

UPDATE: Todd Barry's show at the Bell House is postponed.

The Darcys were supposed to play Mercury Lounge on Thursday (11/1) with Rey Pila but it has been postponed to November 6.

The Tom Tom Club show at Brooklyn Bowl is still on as of this post (and looking good considering the Big Freedia Halloween show is going on as scheduled).

The Chris Gethard Show is presenting a show on Thursday at Littlefield called "Come Take A Ride With The Weirdest Bands We Know" that features Big Digits, Stumblebum Brass Band, Naked Heroes and Mindtroll. Tickets for that show are on sale now.

Social Distortion were forced to cancel their show at The Chance in Poughkeepsie on Sunday (10/28), but their shows at Starland Ballroom on Thursday and Friday are still on for now

We're still keeping tabs on the status of Santos Party House and we'll let you know when we have more info. As of now, the show is still on with Wolf Gang, Alex Metric, The Royal Concept, and Atlas Genius. They tweeted "We're still sorting things out, cross your fingers and stay posted." Tickets are on sale.

Over at Carnegie Hall, the performance by the Orchestra of St. Luke's with conductor Nicholas McGegan that was to be in Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage, has been rescheduled for Saturday, June 1 with soloist to be announced. And the performance by pianist Wael Farouk, that was to happen in Weill Recital Hall, has been rescheduled for Saturday, June 1. Tickets for both November 1 performances will be honored at their new date.

The Brooklyn Nets vs New York Knicks game at Barclays Center is postponed. New date: Saturday at 7:30pm.

We'll keep updating this post.

Social Distortion at MSG in 2011 (more by Dana (distortion) Yavin)
Social Distortion

Social Distortion are still riding high off of their last LP and first in seven years, 2011's Hard Times & Nursery Rhymes. Mike Ness and crew will take some of those songs and other Social D favorites on the road in August for a European tour, followed by an East Coast jaunt in October which hits NYC at Roseland Ballroom on October 26th with Lindi Ortega and The Biters. Tickets are currently on presale, and the regular on-sale begins Friday, June 8 at 11AM.

Speaking of The Biters, they'll be in NYC much sooner: July 2 at The Studio @ Webster Hall with Wednesday 13, and tickets are on sale.

A listing of all Social D tour dates, and a few classic videos, are below.

MCA

as you can imagine, shit is just fkd up right now. but i wanna say thank you to all our
friends and family (which are kinda one in the same) for all the love and support.
i'm glad to know that all the love that Yauch has put out into the world is coming right back at him.
thank you.
That picture and message was posted to the Beastie Boys blog by Adam Horovitz on Sunday evening, two days after the band heartbreakingly confirmed MCA's death.

The high profile and on-stage tributes continued on Friday night and throughout the weekend. You saw what Coldplay, BADBADNOTGOOD & Bomb The Music Industry! did, as well as the message that Thom Yorke posted, and tributes by Madison Square Garden, the Mets, Rusko, A-Trak, the Mets and more. Check out even more below...

Continue reading "Ad-Rock posted a 'thank you' on Beastie Boys blog; SNL, Fallon, Social Distortion, Diplo & even Train paid tribute to MCA too"

Frank Turner

Folk punk singer/songwriter Frank Turner, who would probably not join At The Drive-In, is currently on a North American tour which includes some dates with Social Distortion and others with Dropkick Murphys, who are both working on new albums. He doesn't hit NYC with either of those bands but he'll stop by Brooklyn during the tour for a small headlining show on March 12 at Knitting Factory. Tickets for that show are on sale now. All dates are listed below.

Punk News points to a tweet that Frank posted last month, "Long day of demoing. 15 new songs of varying quality down. Time for a curry and a pint." As they also mention, it's not clear if he means he is working on a new Frank Turner album or if he is referring to his hardcore side project, which he announced towards the end of last year. He also talked about that project in an interview with NME last week, which you can watch the video of below.

All dates and video below...

Dave Grohl & Madison Square Garden
The Foo Fighters

Last night at NYC's Madison Square Garden, Dave Grohl and the boys not only played past midnight -- a rarity given the venue's typical 11 p.m. curfew -- but during the encore, they brought out Joan Jett and Husker Du leader Bob Mould for rip-roaring covers of "Bad Reputation" and Tom Petty's "Breakdown," respectively.

Before all that, however, the band was doing fine on its own. F-bombs were flying from Grohl's mouth, shred-heavy solos coming from his fingers, and laps through the audience kept him running (via an extended stage that spanned the distance of general admission). It was an inspiring bit of frontman badassery -- a universal truth to those in attendance at the packed arena, which has recently undergone a makeover.

The Foos' 24-song set, which was preceded by openers Social Distortion and the Joy Formidable, kicked off around 9:30, led by "Bridge Burning" and a handful of other standouts off the band's latest, "Wasting Light." Grohl's standard "it's going to be a looooong night" line was met by hearty cheers, as was his "Guitar Hero" rant, in which Grohl urged parents to buy their kids "a real one [guitar]... they might write something like this ['Monkey Wrench']."..; [Billboard]

The tour continues in NJ tonight. Pictures of all the bands at the NYC show last night (11/13), with videos of both special guest moments, and the headliner's full setlist, below....

Agnostic Front @ Santos Party House
Agnostic Front

Agnostic Front are currently out on tour with Mongoloids in support of a somewhat new record...

"My Life My Way was released on March 22, 2011. The album features 13 new powerful and anthemic songs laid down by Erik Rutan (MADBALL, GOATWHORE, CANNIBAL CORPSE, etc.) at his Mana Recording Studio in Tampa, FL under the watchful guide of producer Freddy Cricien of MADBALL. The record was mastered by Alan Douches (NILE, MASTODON, etc.)."
The tour hit Santos Party House in NYC on 11/4. Some pictures are in this post. More them with all remaining dates below.

Fellow DMS crew band H2O also has a new record coming out, but not of their own songs. As their own press release reads...

"H2O has been a mainstay in hardcore and punk since their inception back in 1995 and have had many influences along the way. The band is thrilled to pay homage to those influential artists by covering their songs on the forthcoming album, Don't Forget Your Roots, which will be available November 15th from Bridge Nine Records.

Additionally, H2O will be playing the Gramercy Theater on November 19th [with Killing Time], with a special set consisting of cover songs and originals- both new and old. This show will be a celebration of H2O's covers album available just three days prior, as well as a re-release of their self-titled album, available on LP also on November 15th. Vocalist Toby Morse had this to say: "NYC is H2O's roots - where we started - and couldn't think of a more perfect place to release our covers album and the re-issue of our first record. We'll be playing old songs, new songs and cover songs for our fans there! They'll also be able to pick up copies of our self-titled album on vinyl - Bridge Nine is re-pressing that and we couldn't be more excited. It was originally released back in 1996 and has been out of print for a long, long time. Also Don't Forget Your Roots will be available as well!" He continued, "Our covers album is a big personal accomplishment for us - being able to pay homage to the bands that have influenced us so much since we got into punk rock and helped get us where we are today is an amazing thing. We think we've done them justice!"

No Agnostic Front on the tribute album, but there is Madball, Descendents, Bad Brains and many more. The full tracklist, all tour dates, and more Agnostic Front show pictures, below...

Arcade Fire / The Walkmen
Arcade Fire
The Walkmen

The 10th annual Austin City Limits festival came to a close on Sunday with a headlining set by Arcade Fire (who also taped an edition of Austin City Limits the TV show one day earlier). It was a rough year for some attendees. I'm talking about smokers. Austin Statesman posted the following before the weekend:

We welcome all the people and music artists attending this year's Austin City Limits Music Festival. It's a special year for the music festival, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary. The talent this year is incredible, with headliners Kanye West, Stevie Wonder and Arcade Fire, as well as local favorites such as Asleep at the Wheel.

Before we get this party started, we must advise attendees that the Austin Parks Department has banned smoking at all Austin parks, greenbelts, trails and golf courses. That includes Zilker Park, site of the festival.

We realize that a smoking ban might be an inconvenience for some. But it is necessary to keep everyone safe. So please have fun at the events, which run today through Sunday, but leave the cigarettes, cigars, pipes -- or whatever else one might be smoking -- behind. (The ban also prohibits wood or charcoal grilling in Zilker and other parks.)

Smoking was allowed at previous ACL festivals, but this year is different. This year, Central Texas is dealing with wildfires that have killed two people, destroyed about 1,500 homes and burned tens of thousands of acres in Bastrop County, Steiner Ranch, Pflugerville and other Central Texas communities. In Austin, city firefighters responded to 469 brush fires from January through July. Cigarettes caused about a fourth of those fires, officials said. [Austin Statesman]

I don't know how many people obeyed that, but it's safe to say that ACL was fire free. In fact, much to the delight of many, it actually rained a bit on Friday and Saturday. Pictures from Sunday continue, with Arcade Fire's setlist, below...

Danzig

We previously discussed Phily's Riot Fest East that will feature an appearance from the mighty Descendents and The Suicide Machines who they also play with in NYC. Riot Fest East, an offshoot of the Chicago festival, happens on September 24th.

The Chicago version of the festival, October 5-9, previously announced that Weezer, Social Distortion, Descendents, 7 Seconds, ALL (two different eras!), Helmet, and X (playing Los Angeles) were all on the lineup, but left one big announcement for today...

On Friday October 7, 2011 Danzig will headline Riot Fest and perform a career spanning show featuring sets of Danzig, Samhain and Misfits songs with none other than Doyle joining on guitar the Misfits set. We've waited years for this and we can't wait to see the inside of the Congress Theater turn into a churning sea of humanity.
Tickets for both Riot Fest Chicago and Riot Fest East are now on sale, and more band announcements are stil to come(!).

Tickets are now also on sale for the Descendents show at Roseland Ballroom that Suicide Machines and H20 are opening.

X are performing Los Angeles at both Riot Fests AND on two nights at Irving Plaza in NYC. Tickets are on sale for those shows too.

Riot Fest show flyers and some videos is below.

Austin City Limits

Lucero are currently on the road. Tonight, 10/11, will be their third Texas show in a row. The run started on Saturday at Austin City Limits where they played a 2:30pm set in direct competition with The Gaslight Anthem (which is unfortunate since they definitely share fans). On Thursday Lucero link up with Social Distortion and Frank Turner for that previously mentioned tour that stops at NYC's Roseland Ballroom on November 4th. Tickets are still on sale.

The Strokes

"You ready for some Grateful Dead action after this?" asked singer Julian Casablancas early in the Stokes set, referring to Furthur, the band led by the Dead's Phil Lesh and Bob Weir, already in progress at the eastern edge of the polo field. The uncertain response suggested fans were staying put - just as others were for Furthur. The Strokes sounded exceptionally muscular in the park's expansive setting. Fabrizio Moretti contributed heavy beats to "Vision of Division" and "Reptilia," as Casablancas eased his vocals from deadpan to excited and back again. "This is It" slowly built to a sing-along as Albert Hammond Jr. and Nick Valensi created an intricate overlap of guitars. "I remember playing these songs in front of four people," Casablancas said, looking out on the tens of thousands of fans. "It's really surreal." Even, apparently, after all the year's of the band's success. -[Rolling Stone]
The Strokes and Furthur were two of many participants (including Bassnectar and My Morning Jacket and Al Green) at the Outside Lands Festival in San Francisco on August 14th & 15th. In addition to sets from Gogol Bordello, Social Distortion, Phoenix, Kings of Leon, and many more (photo sets of all those bands are below), Outside Lands also featured an appearance from "one of the day's best acts" Chromeo ...
"...At about 5:50 PM, one of the day's best acts appeared at the Outside Lands Festival.

The music was thumping, adrenaline pumping, the sun shining, and many in the crowd -- tapping into a singular energy -- could hold back no longer. They put their inhibitions aside and let themselves be drawn to the beats blasting from the Twin Peaks Stage. Some ran, jumped and moved like they never had before, heading toward a common purpose.

Of course, I'm referring to the bum rush of fans that managed to scramble past the guards and bust down part of the fence along John F. Kennedy Drive, allowing scores of people to hustle in before the riot control guards on horsies and the rent-a-guard dudes in orange t-shirts could stop the inflow." - [San Francisco Chronicle]
