Solange @ Webster Hall this past weekend (more by Dana [distortion] Yavin)
Jay-Z

By now you've surely seen the leaked video of Solange berating, then getting physical, with Jay Z in an elevator (Beyonce was there too), at NYC's The Standard Hotel as they were leaving an afterparty for the Met Gala on May 5. While there has been no shortage of speculation as to what the tiff was over, the three have issued a joint statement to the AP saying everything's hunky-dory now:

As a result of the public release of the elevator security footage from Monday, May 5th, there has been a great deal of speculation about what triggered the unfortunate incident. But the most important thing is that our family has worked through it. Jay and Solange each assume their share of responsibility for what has occurred. They both acknowledge their role in this private matter that has played out in the public. They both have apologized to each other and we have moved forward as a united family.

The reports of Solange being intoxicated or displaying erratic behavior throughout that evening are simply false. At the end of the day families have problems and we're no different. We love each other and above all we are family. We've put this behind us and hope everyone else will do the same.

Well, glad that is settled. In related news, The Daily Show aired a PSA starring Debbie Harry, warning folks about "the scourge of private elevator violence that affects everyone from the very famous to the incredibly famous." Debbie and her band Blondie just happened to be on the show to play live and plug their new album, Blondie 4(0) Ever. You can watch the PSA segment and their live performance of "Sugar on the Side" and a web-only rendition of classic "One Way or Another," below...

MIA / Solange / "Paper Planes" stage invasion
MIA

MIA

Right after her show at cavernous Queens venue Knockdown Center, MIA played Manhattan's Webster Hall on Saturday with Solange. The pairing was part of the two day Vulture Festival thrown by New York Magazine's pop culture blog. Solange played a 10-song set that included a cover of Kate Bush's "Cloudbusting" in addition to her own songs like "Losing You" and "Bad Girls." MIA's set closed with a rendition of "Paper Planes" featuring a large percentage of the crowd on stage with her. Pictures from the whole night are in this post.

For more, we've got pics and a full report of MIA and A$AP Ferg's Knockdown Center show. More pics from Webster Hall below...

Coachella 2014 - Day 2
Coachella 2014 - Day 2
Coachella 2014 - Day 2
Coachella 2014 - Day 2

Watching Ty Segall at the Outdoor Theatre to kick off my Saturday drove home a 2014 Coachella reality: the relative lack of noisy, guitar-driven bands. While the bill is loaded with synthy, electronic-leaning indie types, traditional rock acts are few and far between this year. As if to illustrate the point, late in his gloriously loud and raucous set, Segall covered "Mötörhead" by Mötörhead, one of a handful of truly heavy bands at the fest.

...I arrived 20 minutes early Saturday night [for the Pixies], just in case, but while the Mojave eventually filled and then some, things never got ugly. As for the set itself, I doubt I'll ever adjust to seeing Black Francis, Joey Santiago and David Lovering on a stage without Kim Deal, but the new-look Pixies produced a quality set nonetheless, bashing out extra-ferocious versions of "Gouge Away," "Nimrod's Son," "Crackity Jones" and more. [Las Vegas Weekly]

Coachella 2014 recently wrapped up its first of two weekends. You already saw pictures of day 1, and we've got a set of day 2 pics in this post, including shots of Pet Shop Boys, Pharrell, Queens of the Stone Age, Pixies, Fatboy Slim, Lorde, Future Islands, Warpaint, Julian Casablancas, Ty Segall, Graveyard, Foxygen, Laura Mvula and more.

Of course there's too much to catch everything, but many other great artists played the second day too, including Solange whose sister Beyonce came on stage to dance with her (video below), Nas whose frenemy Jay Z joined him for "Dead Presidents II" and "Where I'm From" and Diddy (I mean Puff Daddy) joined him for "Hate Me Now" (full set video below), indie legends The Dismemberment Plan, post-rock vets Mogwai, plus sets from MGMT, Washed Out, Bombay Bicycle Club, Holy Ghost and many more.

One of the big talks of the day was Pharrell (and his hat), who brought out loads of guests who reminded the crowd that Pharrell wasn't a nobody before "Happy," "Get Lucky" and "Blurred Lines" (all three of which he played). He produced or co-produced huge hits for Snoop Dogg ("Drop It Like It's Hot"), Gwen Stefani ("Hollaback Girl"), Busta Rhymes ("Pass the Courvoisier") and Nelly ("Hot in Herre"), all of who joined him for said songs. A few videos from his set below.

Day 1 pics here. Day 3 pics here. More day 2 pictures, Blake Anderson of Workaholics moshing to Ty Segall included, and videos below...

Happier days w/ Solange & Dev: Bowery Ballroom. 2012 (more by Amanda Hatfield)
Solange and Dev

One of the more obvious Reese's Cup pop moments of the last year or so was Solange's "Losing You," a song co-written and produced by Blood Orange's Dev Hynes. Dev did the same for her mini-LP True, played in her band on her tours and seemed to be having a great time doing so. But the issue of credit began seeping in earlier this year. As detailed in a recent Fader feature on Hynes, Solange had been upset at being refered to merely as "vocal muse" in many reviews; Dev maintains that "Losing You" was written before they started working together. From the Fader article:

At a show in a Chinatown boutique in September, an overpacked crowd turns up to see a rare Blood Orange performance with a full band. Hynes, in a long coat and leather kufi, takes off his jacket to perform "Bad Girls," one of the songs he wrote that Solange re-recorded for True. Then, before launching into "Everything Is Embarrassing," Hynes gives a brief monologue, oddly compelled to footnote a song he created: "I've got a lot of shots ready to be fired, and I guess this is the shot. This is a song I wrote for another singer. She said a couple weeks ago that she doesn't like when I say I wrote it--this happens a lot to me, but I'm not an arrogant guy. That said, I've written some songs for people and they haven't given me due credit and it pisses me off."
More shots were fired yesterday via Twitter from both parties, and while both Solange and Dev's tweets have since been deleted, Stereogum has the transcripts, in paragraph form. Via Dev:
If you wanna take shots at me text me call me talk to me in person but don't ever drop a subliminal, talk behind my back, or send a flunky. I'm doing myself. Ain't nothing to do with anyone else, I'm about myself, like any self respecting human should be. We live & die alone. I have beef with no one. I won't even mention your name ever again. Any of you. I've said my bit. I've reached out. I've praised you. But now it's done. It's over. We're done. Bye.
Dev's didn't mention anyone by name, but Solange @'d him with these:
When you do tumblr post, speak about things in interviews, tweet, issues then belong to the public. I have been minding my biz. I have only ever praised you and spoken about you positively, even when our perspectives were totally different. I still support your artistry & am extremely happy for your success. I just wished you were honest about the making of my album. That's all I'm going to say on this. You know more than anyone niggas love drama. Also u know very well I have reached out. Bless. Ps: Your phone been going straight to VM for long time.
Let's hope they can work things out (maybe not on social media) because they do make good music together.

In very related news, Dev shared thoughts yesterday via Twitter on Jay-Z's partnership with Barney's. These tweets are still up, here in strung-together form:

The biggest 'Fuck You' in history could have been Jay-Z saying NO to Barneys. I'm a big fan [of Jay], of course, who isn't? But just looking at it from the perspective of someone that has had racial abuse in my life. It's cool that all proceeds are going to charity, that's great! But now Barneys, an already rich company that could be charitable anyway... get a cosign and an easy route to redeeming their name. None of the parties involved need more money. They NEED less.
Dev's very good second album, Cupid Deluxe, is out now.

Jhene Aiko

LA R&B singer Jhene Aiko is planning to release her debut LP, Souled Out, next year, but ahead of that she's got an EP, titled Sail Out, which comes out this Tuesday (11/12). The EP features contributions from two of her old Black Hippy pals, Kendrick Lamar on the sprawling, downtempo "Stay Ready (What A Life") and Ab-Soul on the brooding "Wth." Odd Future/Black Hippy collaborator Vince Staples shows up on weed/love song "The Vapors," and Childish Gambino is on "Bed Peace." Early standout single "3:16 AM" is on here too, meshing well with the newer ones for seven tracks of blissful psychedelic R&B. Check out the brand new video for its track "The Worst," over at Noisey, and videos for "3:16 AM" and "Bed Peace," plus streams of the other five tracks, below.

The same day the EP comes out, Jhene appears on Saint Heron, the new compilation from Solange's Saint Records label. In addition to tracks from Jhene and Solange, it features other forward-thinking R&B artists like Cassie, Sampha, Kelela, Petite Noir, Jade De La Fleur, Starchild, BC Kingdom, India Shawn and Iman Omari. Kelela, BC Kingdom, and the just-released Cassie contributions can be streamed below.

Jhene was just in NYC joining Drake when his tour hit Barclays Center (10/28). A video of their collaboration at the Brooklyn arena is below. She appeared on Drake's new album, in addition to recent albums by Big Sean, J. Cole, Ab-Soul and Schoolboy Q.

Vampire Weekend
Vampire Weekend

On the heels of their excellent third album, Modern Vampires of the City, Vampire Weekend brought their tour to Brooklyn's Barclays Center on Friday (9/20) -- the day after Yeah Yeah Yeahs played the same big venue -- for what was their largest headlining NYC show yet. VW split the set pretty evenly between all three of their albums, playing tons of highlights like "Giving Up the Gun," "Cousins," "Unbelievers," "A-Punk," and many more in their 23-song set, plus a cover of Blur's "Song 2." Opening the show was two pop singers with a Dev "Blood Orange" Hynes association, Solange and Sky Ferreira. Pictures of all three artists are in this post.

The show also streamed live on Sirius XM's Alt Nation, and if you missed it (or want to listen again), it rebroadcasts today (9/23) at 8 PM ET.

More pictures, plus VW's setlist and videos (including one of "Song 2"), below...

Nine Inch Nails / Kendrick Lamar / Miguel
Made In America - Day 2
Made In America - Day 2
Made In America - Day 2

Nine Inch Nails headlined the second night of Made In America, filling the "rock legend" slot occupied by Pearl Jam at last year's festival. As with Pearl Jam, many fans showed up mainly to see the headliner, and others left before their set. Like Public Enemy, who played the Rocky stage the prior day, NIN do not fit into the #YOLO vibe, which means that a good amount of the audience don't know what to do with their music. Are girls expected to grind? Should guys twirl their t-shirts over their heads? There's no question that it's a much different era from the one when Trent Reznor and crew leveled the stage at Woodstock '94 and had their zeitgeist moment. [CBS Philly]
The Jay Z-curated Budweiser Made In America Festival on Philly's Benjamin Franklin Parkway wrapped up on Sunday (9/1) with sets from Nine Inch Nails, Queens of the Stone Age, Miguel, Black Hippy (aka Kendrick Lamar/Schoolboy Q/Ab-Soul/Jay Rock), Diarrhea Planet and Solange. Pictures of those artists are in this post. The second day of the festival also included sets by The Gaslight Anthem, Wavves, AlunaGeorge, The Front Bottoms, Pujol, The Underachievers, and more.

Kendrick Lamar/Ab-Soul/Jay Rock and AlunaGeorge will be playing NYC soon. Nine Inch Nails (with Godspeed You! Black Emperor) and Queens of the Stone Age (with The Kills) will be playing the Jay Z-affiliated Barclays Center later this year.

If you haven't been keeping up with our Made In America coverage, check out pictures of day 1 (part 1) and day 1 (part 2). Stay tuned for another set of day 2 pictures. More of this set, below...

Cloud Nothings at BV-SXSW 2013 (more by Sarah Frankie Linder)
Cloud Nothings

As discussed, the Jay Z-curated Budweiser Made In America Festival is returning this weekend to Philly's Benjamin Franklin Parkway (8/31-9/1), and the mostly pop/rap/R&B festival just got a little more, um... punk. Aside from the fact that it already included The Gaslight Anthem (who are pretty much a festival regular by now anyway), the lineup now includes Cloud Nothings, Restorations, Balance & Composure, The Front Bottoms, Diarrhea Planet, PUJOL, and more. And you thought it was weird when Jay Z saw Grizzly Bear.

UPDATE: And one more: Wavves was added to the TBA slot on Sunday.

Other non-punk additions that have happened since we last spoke include Rudimental and The Underachievers. The full schedule was also recently announced, and you can check that out below.

Many of the artists playing Made In America also have NYC or NJ shows this weekend (or soon after), including The Front Bottoms, Diarrhea Planet, Rudimental, The Underachievers, Kendrick, Ab Soul & Jay Rock, AlunaGeorge, Haim, and 2 Chainz.

Also, a number of the artists playing will be in NYC later this year to play Jay Z's stomping grounds, Barclays Center, including Phoenix, Nine Inch Nails, Queens of the Stone Age, and Beyonce.

Made In America schedule below...

Janelle Monae

Janelle Monae was doing the forward-thinking R&B thing a couple years before it blew up, and now her new album The Electric Lady is set to drop in the midst of all the rage. (September 10 via Wondaland Arts Society/Bad Boy Records, to be specific). It includes tracks with Erykah Badu, Miguel, Prince, Solange, Big Boi, Cee-Lo Green, and Esperanza Spalding.

Janelle recently announced an extensive tour in support of the album which previously didn't include a NYC date, but now one's been added: October 18 at The Apollo. Tickets for her show at the legendary venue go on Live Nation/Ticketmaster/Apollo A-List presales today (8/29) at 10 AM (password for Live Nation presale is "summer," for Ticketmaster presale is "electriclady," and for Apollo A-List presale is "apollo") and the general on-sale begins Thursday, September 5 at noon.

All dates are listed, along with streams of two tracks from her new album and the tracklist, below...

Soft spoken indie rockers Belle and Sebastian were a reprieve of sorts to festival goers who had spent the day seeing abrasive rock bands and the eardrum-shattering Swans set earlier in the afternoon (I forgot to bring earplugs...). A slight drizzle started around the band's fourth or fifth song but did not cut the show short like yesterday. Frontman Stuart Murdoch charmed audience members with his kind words, stating Chicago is much more relaxing than New York. Murdoch also engaged with audience members, inviting fans on stage, and even letting one fan draw on his face with mascara. Despite performing in a large festival setting during the headlining slot, the band managed to play one of the most intimate shows of the day. [BV Chicago]
Pitchfork Music Festival 2013 continued on Saturday (7/20) with its second of three days. Day two featured a good deal of bands on the heavy/intense side including Swans, Savages, Metz, Pissed Jeans, and White Lung; some indie legends like Belle & Sebastian, Low, and The Breeders; and some representation from the electronic/R&B world too, including Solange, Rustie, Andy Stott, and Ryan Hemsworth. Of course there were even more artists rounding out the lineup, and pictures from the second day are in this post. Even more are on BV Chicago.

Bonnaroo 2013, Day 3

"I know it's hot out there," Solange told the audience during her Which Stage set, "but if I could could see you guys grinding just a little bit, that would make me so happy." And of course the audience shrieked back with approval, as her band began playing the dreamy "Bad Girls." Following her surprise appearances with Grizzly Bear and on Friday's hip-hop Superjam, it was refreshing to see Solange perform her own dreamy, soulful brand of pop. Throughout her set she shimmied, smiled and swooned along with her band, even pulling off some coordinated line-dancing with her natty and talented guitarist. - [SPIN]
On Saturday (6/15) of Bonnaroo 2013, big names included R. Kelly, Bjork, Empire of the Sun and Cat Power. But there was lots, lots more going on at Bonaroo on Saturday, including Beach House, The Tallest Man on Earth, Two Gallants, and Solange, not to mention comedian Ed Helms in bluegrass mode, and David Cross. Pics from those acts and more are in this post.

If you missed them, our earlier pictures from Day 1 are HERE and HERE, Day 2 photos are HERE and here,  Day 3 are HERE, and Day 4 are HERE. More photos from Saturday, June 15 (and a few from Sunday, 6/16) are below.

Bonnaroo 2013, DAY 2

Bonnaroo's inaugural hip hop Superjam--an R&B/rap counterpart to the festival's long-running, rock-dominated all-star jam sessions--was an uninhibited, messy rager for still-partying night owls at the Tennessee music fest. Paul McCartney might have been the Friday night highlight, but if you wanted to dance, this was the show to see.

The slickest and sickest set came from Solange, who enraptured the crowd with a funky, lovely cover of the Fugees' version of "Killing Me Softly." She also sang the hook on surprise guest Ghostface Killah's Supreme Clientele single "Cherchez La Ghost" and covered "Umi Says," an uplifting jam from Mos Def's solo debut. - [Fuse]

Bonnaroo 2013 is definitely in the record books already, and we've posted a set of pictures from Day 2 (6/14) big names  Paul McCartney, The Wu-Tang Clan, Wilco,  and Jim James. But there was other stuff going on that Friday as well, including sets from Calexico, Big K.R.I.T, Charli XCX, Glen Hansard, DIIV, Amadou & Mariam, and the hip hop "Superjam" featuring RZA, Jazzy Jeff, Schoolboy Q, Solange, Chad Hugo (Neptunes/NERD) and more. Photos from those acts are in this post.

If you missed them, our earlier pictures from Day 1 are HERE and HERE, Day 3 are HERE and Day 4 are HERE. More photos from 6/14 are below.

rainy Saturday at Boston Calling Music Festival (via Kevin Begley)
Boston Calling

The first-ever Boston Calling Music Festival went down over the weekend (5/25-26) at Boston's City Hall Plaza. It was headlined by The National (whose Aaron Dessner also curated it, and who just did lots of album celebrating in NYC), and also included sets by The National's tourmates Dirty Projectors, The Shins (who also played a NYC show this past weekend), The Walkmen (who play a free show during Northside), Youth Lagoon (who open The National's Barclays Center show), and more.

Despite the rain and cold temperatures we were faced with over the weekend, the inaugural festival still seemed to be a success and festival organizers have already announced that Boston Calling will return this fall on September 7 and 8. The fall lineup is being headlined by Vampire Weekend on the Saturday, along with sets by Local Natives, The Gaslight Anthem, Bat For Lashes, Deer Tick, Okkervil River, and more; and headlined by Passion Pit on the Sunday, along with sets from Kendrick Lamar, Major Lazer, Solange, Flosstradamus, Flume, and more. Full lineup below (via Pitchfork).

Early bird 2-day passes go on sale Friday (5/31) at 10 AM and single day tickets go on sale June 7.

Both Local Natives and Kendrick Lamar also play NYC festival Governors Ball in June, which is only one of Kendrick's upcoming festival appearances in the NYC-area. Vampire Weekend and Solange play a NYC show together, and Solange also plays a free show during Northside. Major Lazer and Flosstradamus will hit NYC for their Mad Decent Block Party. And The Gaslight Anthem play two NYC shows this summer too.
