Sunburned Hand Of The Man

The 1st Annual Memory Burn Psych Fest is a one night affair on Saturday, May 29th, 2010 @ Glasslands in Brooklyn, NY. Inspired by such psych-minded festivals over the past few years such as the Frisco Freakout in SF, Memory Burn gathers a stylistic smattering of local heady, heavy hitters in New York's psych scene for an evening of tripped-out fun...The inaugural Memory Burn Psych Fest is a doozy, featuring performances from Revival Times, Weird Owl, Future Hunter, The Black Hollies, White Hills, Hopewell, Golden Triangle, Psychic Ills, and Sunburned Hand of the Man. The show kicks off at 7PM and $12 gets you in the door.
Another notable psych-related event in the near future includes The Entrance Band, who will team up with The Growlers at Mercury Lounge for a show on June 12th. Tickets are on sale. The Entrance Band play Bonnaroo just two days prior.
Sunburned Hand of The Man recently contributed to a tribute LP for the fallen Jack Rose, who passed away late last year. The album, entitled Honest Strings: A Tribute To The Life And Work Of Jack Rose, is out now via Fina Music and also features contributions from Bardo Pond, MV & EE, No Neck Blues Band, Six Organs of Admittance, Spectre Folk, and many many other notables. All proceeds from the sale of the record go to the estate of Jack Rose. Pick up that record, and read more about it at the label's site.
The Memory Burn flyer and some video, including a few of Golden Triangle at Sound Fix Tuesday (5/4) is below...

Frightened Rabbit, whose North American tour stops at Webster Hall on April 28th, will be doing an in-store at Sound Fix earlier that night. Note that the Webster Hall show (with Bad Veins and Maps & Atlases who are at Maxwell's tonight/Thursday) is sold out.
Also coming up at Sound Fix are Fol Chen on April 18th (whose current tour with Liars hits Bowery Ballroom tonight and Music Hall of Williamburg the same day as the in-store) and Golden Triangle (who have plenty of other shows, listed below) on May 4th.
For Record Store Day, Sound Fix doesn't have any live music, but will be opening at 10:30am to sell the RSD exclusive records from this list. Some discs they should have copies of (according to the clerk there) are Black Moth Super Rainbow's limited double-LP version of 2009's Eating Us, a super-exclusive Rodriguez 7" with "Inner City Blues (recorded live in the streets of Paris) paired with "I'm Gonna Live Til I Die" (live cover of Frank Sinatra song), and a Fela Kuti 10" EP (4 songs, recorded in LA in 1969; cover is replica of first Nigerian Fela Kuti record).
The full schedules for Sound Fix and Golden Triange are below...

Sound Fix Records is open at their new Brooklyn location. The address is 44 Berry Street, on the corner of N. 11th. It's just one block from their old store, and they're hosting in-stores again. The first will be this Saturday (9/19) at 2pm with Damon & Naomi who are also playing Le Poisson Rouge with A Hawk and a Hacksaw that same night.
D & N have a new DVD coming out called "1001 Nights". It isn't released until September 29th, but you'll be able to pick one up at both shows if you go.
Max Silvestri, Jenny Slate & Gabe Liedman @ Rififi (Marianne Ways)

Hi buds,Klaus also tells me that comedian Hannibal Burress has been hired by SNL as a staff writer... which is confirmed by the Apiary that also says UCB performer Christine Nangle will also be writing for the show. Congrats to everyone! Some Jenny videos below...Woah, get ready. I have some huge news! As you know, one of my lovely Big Terrific co-hosts Jenny Slate has been absent as of late doing "showbiz" stuff, and a lot of you have been all "more like no-biz!!" Well first, stop saying that, and also, it's paid off! She is the newest cast member on Saturday Night Live, which is a long running television show that you have heard of. Won't that be amazing? She is going to be their go-to person for Gloria Estefan impressions. Also, she is going to be their go-to person for everything because she is the best, we love her so much, are so very proud, and cannot think of anyone who would be better on that show. It's really just perfect. Like, we were all surprised to get the news but also we totally weren't, you know? That's how great she'll be.
Jenny will be back at Big T soon to tell lots of showbiz stories about what Megan Fox smells like and how Ted Danson always has mints handy or whatever. Come this Wednesday and celebrate with Gabe and me, before all of us are too famous.
We've got super guests too: Eugene Mirman, Leo Allen, Brent Sullivan and more! We're so psyched. It's Wednesday September 2nd at 8pm at Cameo Gallery, 93 North 6th St between Berry & Wythe in Williamsburg. Come hang out!!
Thanks guys. You guys make Big Terrific the most fun. (Also us, but definitely you a bit too.)

Five years ago, Sound Fix opened its doors with the aim of creating a new kind of record store, one that combined the finest in independent retail with food and drink and live music. The opening-night act in its adjoining bar were the Mountain Goats. Over the years, Sound Fix has hosted some of the biggest names in independent music, from Will Oldham to Beirut to Jens Lekman to the Sea and Cake and countless other acts. During that time, while record shops all over the nation big and small have closed their doors, Sound Fix has flourished, proving that the right kind of record store could still thrive in today's environment. After five wonderful years on Bedford Ave., Sound Fix is packing up and moving to a new location - but not very far. In fact, only one block away, to the corner of Berry and N. 11th St. The new location, a beautifully renovated 90-year-old factory at 44 Berry Street, seeks to build on the store's success by offering more than ever - more titles in more formats, from CDs to vinyl to 7-inches to books to DVDs.
Together, with Beacon's Closet and Brooklyn Brewery and Brooklyn Bowl, this stretch of N. 11th promises to be one of Williamburg's more popular blocks. The store intends to continue its in-store tradition, but the days of selling booze and coffee and bagels are over. With several neighbors at 44 Berry offering those services, Sound Fix can focus on selling music.
The date for the reopening has not been established yet, but we are seeking to open sometime in September. Another press release will go out when the opening date has been determined.

Bell @ Mercury Lounge April 27th, 2009

Bell is playing a "Sound Fix Presents" Northside Fest show, not AT Sound Fix which no longer hosts live music, but at Berry Park - on Saturday, June 13th with Death Vessel, Arrington De Dionyso (Old Time Relijun), Teengirl Fantasy and Weekends. Either a Northside badge or $10 at the doors, which open at 8pm, will get you in.
Before the Northside gig, Bell will play (Le) Poisson Rouge on Wednesday, May 27th with UK's Ciam. Tickets are on sale.
Death Vessel, who is also on the Sound Fix bill for June 13th at Berry Park, has a show at the Bell House with Grant Hart (ex-Husker Du) coming up on June 1st.
The above and below pictures of Bell are from her Monday, April 27th show at the Mercury Lounge with Bowerbirds, Lost in the Trees and La Strada. Photos of those bands were previously posted. The rest of the Bell pictures below...

"Marissa Nadler played the last live concert in Sound Fix Lounge on Saturday -- or did she?The article goes on to say that Sound Fix has no plans on closing the record store, though Bradley "added that his lease is up in a year".Owner James Bradley vowed to keep putting on shows, despite losing his liquor license last month.
"It is my fervent hope and desire to continue the tradition of live music in Williamsburg," said Bradley, who plans to have an event on Record Store Day on April 18, and to host weekly performances.
Sound Fix Lounge, on North 11th Street, just west of Bedford Avenue, had its license expire at the end of February following noise complaints under the former owner.
But Bradley hasn't given up on shows entirely, though he admitted that coaxing patrons to live music would be difficult without alcohol.
"The two seem to go hand-in-hand," he said.

Marissa Nadler also played in a church on Friday.

The Forms @ Sound Fix on Feb 20, 2009 (by Jonny Leather)

1. This Thursday's (Feb 26 @ 8pm) Big Terrific is our last show at Sound Fix ever! Isn't that so sad? Sound Fix is closing down, as you may have heard, to become an Urban Outfitters that only sells toe rings. Who even wears toe rings besides little babies? Ugh. I have been hosting shows there for over a year and this is very disappointing, but we're going to send the place off right. We're saying goodbye with some of our favorite guests ever: improvisational musical wunderkind Reggie Watts, one of the best stand-ups in New York and SNL writer John Mulaney, Videogum internet sexebrity and dear friend Gabriel Delahaye, all-star jokesmith Jesse Popp, and Brooklyn master storyteller DC Benny. This show will be funny and sweet and sad and please come help us say goodbye.Marissa Nadler plays the final Sound Fix in-store concert on Saturday.2. Luckily, nothing can stop Gabe & Jenny and me and our love of attention. Beginning March 11th, Big Terrific moves to every Wednesday night at Cameo, a gorgeous new music/art/performance space behind the Lovin' Cup at 93 North 6th Street between Berry and Wythe in Williamsburg. Still at 8pm, still free, just on Wednesdays now. And even closer to the train! We are super excited about this venue, and they are really committed to cool things. The show will be even better because now there is a green room for costume changes, and we can have live music. Are you even ready for how fun this will be? There's a SHOWER we can use. Tell your friends. Starting March 11th, Big Terrific is on Wednesdays. NOTE: this venue has nothing to do with the funk-inspired R&B outfit Cameo, though they do provide Gabe Liedman all his wardrobe.

SOUNDFIX SOUND FIX FAQ
Q: What's the price of admission at your in-stores? How can I get tickets?Sound Fix will, sadly, have to change the answer of "Can my band come play at your space?" to "No" after February 28th because that's the date of the last in-store (in-lounge) ever. The whole lounge closes soon after.
A: Our in-stores are free to the public and seating is general admission.Q: Where do the bands play?
A: In the Sound Fix Lounge, behind the record store.Q: What time should I show up?
A: Please don't call and ask us this. We don't know. Every show is different. Sometimes people show up an hour early to get a good spot, sometimes the place is empty a half hour before showtime. If you really love the band and want a good spot, get here early. That's all we can say.Q: Is Sound Fix one word or two?
A: Two words! Please do not spell it "Soundfix." It really drives me crazy....
Q: Can my band come play at your space?
A: Unlikely. But it can't hurt to ask....
Q: Where is Beacon's Closet?
A: A block and a half from the store, down N. 11th St. Please stop asking.Q: What's the greatest album of all time?
A: Depending on my mood, Neil Young's Tonight's the Night or the Who's Sellout
Marissa Nadler will be the final performer at the Brooklyn venue. It's one day after her show at Greenpoint's Lutheran Church, and a few days before the one she's playing at Joe's Pub.

Teengirl Fantasy (photo by josh sisk)

You don't hear too much from Celebration lately. Well, not totally true. The Baltimore band, known for being tight with Brooklyn's TV on the Radio, are credited as collborators on the new Holly Miranda album that was co-produced by TV on the Radio's Dave Sitek. And this Saturday night, February 21st, Celebration plays a Brooklyn show at Glasslands - the very venue members of TV on the Radio have turned up to play with their side projects in the last few weeks. TV on the Radio also have a NYC show coming up. Holly Miranda has a couple too.
Sound Fix Records, the venue, is not long for this world. Upcoming free shows there include a Friday night (tonight) performance by The Forms, and a Saturday one by Howlies. Tonight's Forms show, presented by Guilt by Association, also doubles as a Sound Fix benefit show, so look for the tip jar as its being passed around. Howlies' record "Trippin With Howlies" is out now. That is the occasion they'll be celebrating when they come back to town to play Death By Audio on February 26th.
Telepathe have been added to the Ladytron and Faint tour in April. That means they'll be playing Webster Hall on the 10th and 11th of that month. No need to wait that long though. In addition to some shows at SXSW in March, you can catch Telepathe twice in NYC this weekend, courtesy of Todd P. Tonight, February 20th, the show is at Market Hotel with These Are Powers, Teengirl Fantay, Soft Circle and Katie Eastburn. Saturday they play with Teengirl Fantasy, Hawnay Troof, and Silk Flowers at 92Y Tribeca. Todd P says...
Especially excited about the 2 shows this weekend featuring TEENGIRL FANTASY from Oberlin, Ohio. Teengirl Fantasy, aka Logan Takahashi and Nick Weiss, are two young guys currently attending Oberlin College, together they make drum machine and sampler heavy dance music that steals as much from the underground noise scene as it does from the dance world. Teengirl Fantasy smash those influences to make transcendently catchy adrenaline anthems that get everyone dancing.Teengirl Fantasy remixed one of Telepathe's songs. Listen to it in the video below...

Los Campesinos! @ Sound Fix Records (more by Kyle Dean Reinford)

After "Anonymous" posted "soundfix closing at the end of FEB???? true or rumor??" in the comments yesterday, I investigated, and sadly one person that would know did get back to me with a simple "True". Free Williamsburg called Sound Fix "and they confirmed that they were indeed shutting down, 'just the bar,'"
This sucks for the free shows, and this is especially unfortunate for comedy. As we were just pointing out, Sound Fix has filled the gap left after Rififi closed. The Williamsburg bar has in fact become one of NYC's most consistent weekly (free) comedy show locations. The comic's comic writes...
If it seems like only a year ago that live comedy shows were beginning to find a new happy home behind the Sound Fix record store, that's because it was only a year ago, as Max Silvestri started hosting shows then and I was pitching the venue as a potential full-on replacement for the East Village's Rififi, which closed last summer, in part, because that club's owner gave up a similar battle with the neighbors. Gabe & Jenny joined up with Max for weekly Big Terrific shows that have lived up to the name, and other shows soon followed suit, making for lively lineups and large audiences just about every weeknight. As we've pointed out many times, Sound Fix has been battling neighbors and the city over noise and other violations practically since they expanded into being more than just a record store. At least the record store isn't also leaving with them.
In the meantime, go check out a show at the venue during its final days. A few of them are listed below...

Max & Gabe D & friend @ MoMA - Jan 6, 2009 (by Fred Benenson) (via)

I don't get to see nearly as much comedy as I used to, but the scene is as vibrant as ever. If the mood strikes and I find myself wanting to get my yuck-on there is absolutely no shortage of one-off shows and recurring weekly shows. The Tribeca branch of the 92nd St Y has been booking some insane comedy shows recently. I caught Zach Galifianakis there a few weeks ago and was mightily impressed by the performance space and the insane, reasonably priced beer list at the bar. Sound Fix in Williamsburg has free comedy every Wednesday and Thursday. Joe Mande and Noah Garfinkle host Totally J/K every Wednesday at 9:30pm, while Max Silvestri, Gabe Liedman and Jenny Slate host Big Terriffic at 8:00pm on Thursdays. These shows fill the void left by the demise of Rififi and its staples Invite Them Up and The Greg Johnson & Larry Murphy Show by attracting big names like Zach Galifianakis, Sarah Silverman, Janeane Garofalo, Todd Barry, Eugene Mirman, and zillions more. Speaking of Greg Johnson, he's got a free show every Sunday at Pianos. And speaking of Invite Them Up, former host Bobby Tisdale now has a semi-regular, RSVP only show happening in Greenpoint called Wards of Merkin. It's usually $10 and there's usually free booze and top shelf comedians. And don't forget that the UCB Theater and The Pit have calendars bursting with options as does Comix's underground lair Ochi's. And that's just barely scratching the surface of the goings ons. Below are some shows currently on my radar...

Only Son & Regina Spektor @ Sound Fix, Brooklyn, NY - Apr 19, 2008 (slicknick1986)

People started lining up outside Sound Fix at 7am for Regina Spektor's free 1pm show in honor of Record Store Day on Saturday. Unfortunately though, Sound Fix (a record store with attached bar and performance space) is still having problems - a lot of them....
...According to Bradley, the Dept. of Health, the Dept. of Buildings, and the Police Dept. have all issued violations on the business, many of them requiring court appearances. "It's been really overwhelming," says Bradley. The record store owner believes the violations are rooted in complaints from a couple of neighbors who live in an adjacent building, one of whom, Teresa Polonski, works for Assemblyman Joseph Lentol. "I'm sympathetic to noise complaints, and we've done a lot to try to mitigate the noise," says Bradley. "All this seems to be really excessive to me." The Dept. of Health shut down the Sound Fix Lounge after serving it with three violations for operating without a food license; the first violation was issued March 6th, the second on March 8th, and the third on March 28th. "On 3/28 the establishment was swarmed by inspectors and shut down. I was advised by DOH that this was actually a Mayor's task force," says Mikelle V. Komor of Wagner Davis P.C., one of the attorneys working for Sound Fix... [Brownstoner]
