High on Fire at Fun Fun Fun Fest (more by BBG)
High on Fire

March 16th, March 16th, March 16th! If you're going to be in Austin, save the date on your calendar folks! On Friday March 16th, 2012 at Scoot Inn (1308 e4th St), BrooklynVegan, The Power of The Riff, and Southern Lord will combine forces for a MARATHON of events that kickoff at noon and end waaaaay after the sun goes down.

The FREE daytime portion, in conjunction with the four-day Thrasher/Converse "Death Match" event at the venue, is an all-ages shindig that will kick off at noon and feature a skateramp with skaters and bands all day long. Shortly after doors open, expect to see eleven bands across two stages including sets from the following:

March 16, 2012 @ Scoot Inn, Austin, TX (noon-6pm)
* High on Fire
* Off!
* Trash Talk
* Black Cobra
* Ceremony
* Deafheaven
* Full of Hell
* Heartless
* Balaclava
* Dead in The Dirt
* DNF (members of Trash Talk, Touche Amore)
That's right... High on Fire AND Off! AND Trash Talk (playing their FOURTH year of SXSW shows with us) AND Black Cobra AND Ceremony all in the same space, not to mention the awesome undercard of bands like Deafheaven (playing their second year of SXSW shows with BV), new favorites Full of Hell, Balaclava, Heartless and Dead in The Dirt. It is going to be insane, so bring a hard hat.

As the day show comes to a close, we'll get ready for our night show at the same venue... amounting to a total of FOURTEEN HOURS of destruction! Not to mention the food trucks, a full bar, and so much more to keep you fed and hydrated (or buzzed, depending on your poison) during the onslaught. Stay tuned to BrooklynVegan for details regarding the official night showcase, and for more about the day show, including set times. In the meantime, head below for video of some of the bands playing our MEGA-show at Scoot Inn on March 16th!

Drainland/Trenches art
Drainland

Drainland's And So Our Troubles Began flew under the radar for a lot of folks in the US. Considering the quality of the record, it's an utter shame. Over six tracks spanning 21 minutes, Ireland's Drainland establish themselves as a powerful force in the admittedly oversaturated crust/neg-hardcore scene, combining sludge-doom and d-beat with a voice that isn't too far from the cigarette-and-whiskey-damaged throat of the god Lemmy himself. Stream two tracks from the record below, and get a copy of your own at Southern Lord. It rips.

In the meantime, Drainland have also released a new split, this time with Trenches. The four track split (Drainland's three tracks are represented as one below) was recorded by James Eager at The Hive and features mastering from the one and only James Plotkin. Listen to the split in its entirety below. Look for it via the Halo of Flies or Ifb Records distro in the US. Graanrepubliek, Vendetta & Headwrecker overseas.

So far no tour dates to speak of, but while we wait for those, stream those songs below...

Xibalba

California's Xibalba (not the Mexican black metal band of the same name) know their way around a downtuned groove. One listen to their new LP and it becomes apparent that not only does the band love its low-to-floor guitar sound (seriously doomy!), but they're not afraid to break it down for those in the mood to pick up some change. With their almost baritone guitar sound coupled with frontman Nathan Rebolledo's uber-pissed vocals, Xibalba distinguishes themselves from the droves of Hatebreed/Madball-sound-alikes.

Get therapy guys! Or maybe just keep on making brutal releases like the self-titled debut which is still available on vinyl via A389, and will soon be released via CD with additional material as Madre Mia Gracias Por Los Dias via the venerable Southern Lord on 6/21. Stream all of Madre Mia Gracias Por Los Dias below.

Xibalba are currently touring the East Coast and will play Party Expo TONIGHT at 7PM (6/16) with Cipher, Doomsday Mourning, and Brooksite as part of a string of dates with Foundation. Get out and try to buy some merch, they'll need all the dough they can get without a van... All tour dates, the LP stream, and a recent video for "Cold" is below....

All Pigs Must Die at Full Metal Texas (more by Samantha Marble)
All Pigs Must Die

A bit of bad news... Burning Love has cancelled their scheduled appearance at Union Pool Friday with Nails, All Pigs Must Die & New Lows, and their show with Unbroken at Santos Party House on 4/9. Fortunately for both shows though, excellent bands have stepped in to fill their shoes. The slot at Union Pool will be filled by Psychic Limb and the Santos show will be replaced by special guests... Damnation AD! Santos will be Damnation AD's first NYC appearance since their reunion dates in 2007. Tickets are available at the door for Nails, but unfortunately Santos is sold out.

In related news, All Pigs Must Die have signed to Southern Lord for their new/forthcoming LP and recently dropped some details on that forthcoming LP:

The final master is approved for the GOD IS WAR lp and the artwork is currently being drawn by FLORIAN BERTMER. Just a matter of time before everything is ready to go to the pressing plant. More to come.
Can't wait. All dates, flyers, and some video is below.

Weedeater at The Studio at Webster Hall (more by Markus Shaffer)
Weedeater

After over a year of literally crippling injuries to all three of WEEDEATER's members hitting the headlines, including infamous classics like "Dixie Dave blew off part of his foot with a shotgun," or "Keko tore his meniscus this week," and "Shep broke his goddamn pinkie on tour" or even "Dixie nearly died in his ninja-scuba assassin Halloween costume" and more, the band still forged on through these blows for multiple tours -- several regional and national headlining tours, as well as supporting Down and The Melvins -- to finally complete [their new] record. Although delayed by eight months, the haggard trio infiltrated Steve Albini's Electrical Audio Studio in Chicago this past September to pound out Jason... The Dragon.

As with their Southern Lord debut God Luck And Good Speed, the Jason... album was mastered by the legendary John Golden at Golden Studios in southern California, unearthing the true grit that this band dumps forth. [press release]
Weedeater will begin their trek towards Jason... The Dragon, due on March 15th via Southern Lord, when they hit the road in late February. BrooklynVegan is proud to present the Jason... The Dragon US Tour with ASG and then Zoroaster that will include stops at SXSW and in NYC on February 24th at Santos Party House (with ASG). Tickets for the NYC show will be on sale soon.

All dates, some videos, the tour flyer, and the new album tracklist and Arik Roper-created cover art, below...

The Secret

The Secret has something to tell you, and it won't be polite. After releasing a pair of promising LPs via the now-defunct Goodfellow Records (2003's Luce and 2008's Disintoxication), the abrasive blackened/hardcore/grind hybrid has found a new home in Southern Lord Records, who will release their new LP Solve Et Coagula on September 28th. If Disintoxication was just a hint, then Solve Et Coagula is the full answer; this is The Secret's most cohesive and powerful release yet, worthy on any shelf with records by Integrity, Converge, Pulling Teeth, or recent faves like Amenra and Celeste. If there is justice, The Secret will be a secret no more. Dig on a sample in "Double Slaughter", available for the first time above.

We cornered guitarist Michael Bertoldini of The Secret to ask him about the new record, touring plans, and some of his fond memories of Makh Daniels of Early Graves (RIP).

====

Coming off of Disintoxication, what were your goals with the new record?

The year before the recording of Disintoxication was transitional for us, as the whole line up of the band changed drastically. We wanted to write an album and record it very quickly, but afterword we felt like we put too many ideas into each of the songs.

With the new record, we just did what we wanted, and what we wanted was to write fast, dark, straightforward heavy songs.

CoC
Speaking of LA, they have another noteworthy festival happening in August, though that show focuses more on the heavier side of things. August 8th will mark The Power of The Riff Fest at The Echo and Echoplex in LA with the return of Corrosion Of Conformity III (aka Animosity era!), Goatsnake, From Ashes Rise, Trap Them, Repulsion, Nails, Coliseum, Black Breath, Eagle Twin, Early Graves, and many others. The Converse-presented show is FREE (wow), but requires an RSVP. Poster and full lineup below.

The original 3-piece Corrosion of Conformity also have a handful of other dates scheduled around that time. Unfortunately none on the east side of the coast (for now), but they are listed below. Three of the dates, including The Power of the Riff, are being called the "Southern Lord West Coast Tour" which all include the lineup of Goatsnake, Eagle Twin, and Black Breath (poster below).

Nails will be in Brooklyn on September 23rd alongside Strong Intention and Venomous Concept at Europa. Tickets are still on sale. Nails are also on the lineup of Philly's 3-day This is Hardcore Fest.

Unfortunately most of this stuff does not include NYC action, though we have two sunn o))) & Boris shows to look forward to, not to mention Boris/Russian Circles/Torche, and SLEEP. Coliseum was just here last week.

Dates and stuff below...

DOWNLOAD: Pelican - "Strung Up From The Sky" (MP3)
DOWNLOAD: Disappearer - "A Skull Full Of Bats" (MP3)

Black Cobra's therapist recommends meditation to cure their anger. We recommend full stacks.
Black Cobra

A month after their appearance at an unofficial Southern Lord showcase (the sunn O)))/Earth/Eagle Twin show at Brooklyn Masonic - tix), Pelican will hit the road in support of their new LP, What We All Come To Need. Those fall & winter dates include a December 2nd NYC show at Highline Ballroom with Black Cobra and Disappearer. Tickets go on sale Friday, 9/4 at noon. All dates below.

Black Cobra is also gearing up to drop their debut for Southern Lord, Chronomega, due on 9/29. Chronomega was produced by the legendary Billy Anderson (Sleep, Neurosis, Buzzov*en, High On Fire, soo many others) and features nine tracks, the first of which, "Negative Reversal" is available for download above! Dig on the cover art below. For the unaware, Black Cobra is a (massive) guitar-drums duo consisting of ex-members of Cavity (which at one point featured Juan & Steve of Torche), -16- (who reunited and dropped an LP this year), and Acid King (fun fact: Dale Crover's ex-wife Lori is on vox/guit). Black Cobra is two weeks away from touring Japan and Australia - full tour sched is below.

Speaking of bands that contained Juan Montoya and Steve Brooks of Torche, Floor recently announced that they will release their discography via Robotic Empire.

Disappearer recently dropped their new LP The Clearing for FREE DOWNLOAD. You should probably download that mammajamma.

Jebb Riley's other undertaking, Doomriders, recently made an audioplayer for Darkness Come Alive available here. That album drops 9/29 on Deathwish. The band has only one date on their calendar thus far, 9/26 in Allston, MA supporting Rorschach.

All dates below...

Pelican @ Irving Plaza in June (more by Paul Birman)
Pelican

"Pelican are in the studio putting the finishing touches on their fourth studio album, entitled What We All Come To Need (out this fall on Southern Lord). What guitarist Laurent Lebec has dubbed "the most perfect synthesis of everything we've done to date, sonically", this new album is a giant step forward within the complex, intricate, beautiful and crushing sound Pelican is famous for. The album features more guests than have ever appeared on a Pelican album before: Greg Anderson of sunn O))), Aaron Turner of Isis, Ben Verellen of Harkonen and Helms Alee and Allen Epley from The Life & Times and Shiner. Content-wise, Lebec says "There is a current of inspiration that feels particular to each album's music and titles. Though we lack a singer, the song names are often conceptual. This new album speaks to a rapidly decaying world, the fulfillment we find in each other, as well as the resolve to move beyond disillusionment."
Chalk up ANOTHER killer band! Pelican has been added to the already sick bill of sunn 0))), Earth, and Eagle Twin at Brooklyn Masonic Temple on September 22nd! Tickets are still on sale. The show is one of a pair for this killer four band lineup (the other is in Seattle on August 6th).

Repulsion, Pig Destroyer & Brutal Truth played Brooklyn Masonic Temple on July 31.

sunn O))) rattling the Knit. it closed (sort of) soon after. Coincidence? (Damien Neva)
sunn

As previously prophesized, sunn O))) have announced a date at Brooklyn Masonic Temple on Septmber 22nd. Tickets are on sale. Exciting, no doubt, but what's AS exciting is that much like last year's Shoshin/GrimmRobes show at Knitting Factory (with Thou and Tony Conrad), the band has brought some exciting support along from the ride: Earth & Eagle Twin!

Earth, who recently reissued their Radio/Live LP on Southern Lord, currently has one other date on their schedule, July 24th in Seattle at the Capital Hill Block Party. Members of Earth (as well as Burning Witch) are also involved in Master Musicians of Bukkake, who released Totem One on Conspiracy in May.

Eagle TwinSo just who is Eagle Twin? Eagle Twin contains one Gentry Densley of Iceburn fame, who also recently did time with sunn-er Greg Anderson in Ascend. The band is releasing their debut LP The Unkindness Of Crows via Southern Lord on July 21st, and have dropped off a ferocious new sample in the form of "Murder Of..." available for download above. Eagle Twin, who made their presence felt at SXSW, is scheduled to join sunn O))) on all North American dates (below).

In other Southern Lord news, recent signees Black Cobra will release Chronomega, their new LP on Sept 29, 2009. Featuring production by Billy Anderson and boasting a cover by southern sickos BuzzOv*en, the band is currently streaming "Negative Reversal" on their myspace.

Meanwhile, another band that shared many stages with Eagle Twin during SXSW, It's Casual, has scheduled an east coast show at Union Pool for August 23rd supporting the mad magicians of Wizardry.

Full tour dates for sunn 0))) & Eagle Twin, It's Casual, and KTL are below, as well as a couple for the reunited Thor's Hammer (featuring Stephen O'Malley)...

Jim Jarmusch & Bill Murray
Jarmusch

Director Jim Jarmusch, a musician himself, is no stranger to using modern music in his films. In 1994, Neil Young provided the soundtrack to his unique take on the western, Dead Man starring Johnny Depp. In 1999, RZA handled soundtracking and acting duties for his samurai epic Ghost Dog: The Way Of The Samurai. 2003's Coffee and Cigarettes starred Iggy Pop, Tom Waits, GZA, RZA, Jack and Meg White among others. And there are other examples (see comments).

Jim, not a stranger to Doom either (he featured a track by the recently-reunited Sleep in the movie Broken Flowers), continues the exploration in 2009 with his new film, The Limits of Control. This one will feature, in addition to a possible track by The Black Angels, Southern Lord artists Boris, sunn 0))) & Boris, and Earth! According to a post at The Playlist, Jim chose it all himself as well...

"I have a file of the music that I think is appropriate atmospherically for each film, and that has inspired me even before shooting. I pick the music, so there's no music supervisor per se...When I was writing 'The Limits of Control,' I was already imagining using some things from Boris and Sunn O))), and Earth and The Black Angels. I made [director of photography] Chris Doyle CDs so he could listen to Boris; you could categorize Boris as a psychedelic/noise/metal band, but they're just so original." - Jim
The soundtrack (to be released on Lakeshore Records) contains the following burners:

Funeral Mist, the black metal crew featuring Mortuus of Marduk, have announced their NEW album, Maranatha due on Norma Evangelium Diaboli (link NSFW) on Feb 23rd! Funeral Mist's last album, Salvation, was released in 2006. No ticket details as of yet, but we'll let you know when they surface. Full tour schedule below.

Javelina have announced the more details about their previously announced Sanford Parker-produced LP coming soon on Translation Loss. Their sophomore effort will include nine original tunes, as well as a Buzzov*en cover ("Whisky Fit") that will be featured on a upcoming tribute record (which will also feature contributions from Sourvein, Deadbird, Fistula, Kylesa, Zoroaster and many more). Grace of Landmine Marathon
LM

Landmine Marathon have scheduled an East Coast tour including TWO nights in NYC! On April 13th, Grace and the boys will descend upon Lit Lounge (Precious Metal) backed by Wizardry and Seizure Crypt. Three days later (4/16), the band have set aside the day to play an additional show in Brooklyn... details are forthcoming. Landmine Marathon are also on board to play both the New England Hardcore & Metal Fest, as well as the Los Angeles Murderfest. Full tour schedule below. Speaking of Wizardry, the band will record their entire live show at Union Pool on Feb 25th for later release.

Pelican have signed with Southern Lord! The band is currently recording material at Red Room studios in Seattle for what will be their debut EP for the label. Look for the new material to be "heavier, darker and very riff-oriented," according to guitarist Trevor De Brauw. Pelican also announced a slew of tour dates with Tombs (none in NYC), including a stint with Wolves In The Throne Room that will bring the trio to SXSW as part of the Southern Lord showcase. WITTR have a new EP AND LP on the way, and recently dropped a live LP, Live at Roadburn.

DeathSpell OmegaDeathspell Omega's Veritas Diaboli Manet in Aeternum - Chaining the Katechon EP, culled from their split with S.V.E.S.T. is out NOW at Southern Lord, and if you were a fan of their last LP, I highly reccommend it. Also of note at Southern Lord: Wolves in The Throne Room's previously mentioned Malevolent Grain EP, the new and mega-rare Boris/Michio Kurihara Cloud Chamber LP (1500 total copies) as well as the Boris Vs. Choukoku - More Echoes, Touching Air Landscape reissue. WITTR's new album Black Cascade is due on Mar 31st.

Speaking of WITTR, Scion Rock Fest is a little more than two weeks away, and we have 10 PAIRS of tickets and 10 Josh Graham designed posters for giveaway. In the meantime, dig on the recently posted set times below (thx anon)!

With honor SUNN O))) is announcing four live performances in the United States, to recognize the 10th anniversary of SUNN O)))'s creation ...

and to coincide and the recording of our first album: The GrimmRobe Demos. We will be playing material from this album exclusively. It will be a return to our primal origins, and approach respecting a concept of shoshin, the beginner's mind, the yet undyed pure wool, the clarity in initiation upon the untraveled........ And so, with this mindset that we will be approaching these live concerts. Pure, raw, uninhibited invocations featuring 0)))s core members: Stephen O'Malley and Greg Anderson ONLY. No guests, no vocals, no keyboards. We hope you will join us....
sunn 0))) will bring experimental artist Tony Conrad, as well as the mighty Thou to Knitting Factory in NYC on Oct 15th. Tickets are on sale. All dates below.

Boris @ Knitting Factory (amy.bee)
BORIS @ The Knit

July 10th At Webster Hall. That's your THIRD chance in under a year for these Japan natives. Tickets go on sale Sat 4/26 at noon. Hopefully we can look forward to more blistering solos from Kurihara to counter those blistering solos from Wata.

Boris' new album Smile is out soon on Southern Lord, and the guys are offering three different versions, not including the awesome version that they are offering through their Japanese label.

Prefixmag recently posted an interview with Atsuo.

In related news, Boris's labelmates and drone-doom predecessors Earth are playing a show at the Knitting Factory that you can get into for FREE! Similar to the Boris promotion earlier in the year, here are the deets:

Dylan Carlson, of Earth (ricky-oh)
Dylan Carlson of Earth

Like a lone gunslinger riding off into the sunset, Dylan Carlson & Earth will bring the cowboy-soundtracky The Bees Made Honey In The Lions Skull across the badlands of the midwest and east coast. One of those stops, the Knitting Factory on May 6th (on sale now), will feature the dark chanteuse Jesse Sykes with her hand The Sweet Hereafter (mem of Whiskeytown).

How did these two seemingly dissimilar artists end up on the same bill? Southern Lord casts light where there is darkness:

Some of the alumni that gathered for this album [Jesse Sykes's Like, Love, Lust and the Open Halls of the Soul] such as Bill Herzog, Steve Moore, Eyvind Kang, and Randall Dunn have strong ties to sunn 0))), Earth and Southern Lord, so although it may seem a strange release amongst our catalog, it really makes perfect sense!
Jesse Sykes & The Sweet Hereafter are streaming a new song at their myspace and have a few tour dates of their own including a European tour with Marissa Nadler, and scattered dates with Black Mountain, The Weakerthans & Castanets. Head out and pic up a tour only EP while you're out.

Southern Lord recently sold out of the 180-gram 2LP of Jesse Sykes & The Sweet Hearafter's latest Like Love, Lust And The Open Halls of The Soul, but a second pressing is on it's way. All dates below...
