Passion Pit / Kud Cudi at Governors Ball - 6/23/12
Governors Ball
Governors Ball

Governors Ball went down in Randall's Island over the weekend (6/23-6/24) with 26 bands across two stages and no overlapping sets. Day 1 was "headlined" by Passion Pit (though Kid Cudi played after them) and also included Chromeo, Major Lazer, Atmosphere, Santigold, Duck Sauce (Armand Van Helden and A-Trak), James Murphy & Pat Mahoney (Special Disco Version DJ set), and more. Probably the most anticipated set of the day was Passion Pit's, who were playing their first NYC area show in about a year and a half, and first since announcing their new album and releasing two singles from it (both of which they played). NY Times didn't seem to approve much of their set though, writing:

Saturday played out as a party punctuated by angst; there were many, many calls for putting hands in the air. Party and angst mix in Passion Pit, who work in two main modes: the shimmering anthem and the pulsating dance-pop song, both with more cryptic lyrics than might be expected. Passion Pit stacked the anthems at the beginning of the set-among them a new song, "Take a Walk," about an immigrant who finds himself financially ruined-before revving up the dance tunes. But the stage didn't add much beyond subwoofers to Passion Pit's songs; Michael Angelakos's vocals, mostly falsetto, needs studio help.
They wrote similar criticism of Kid Cudi, mentioning that he also needs the safety net of the studio, but were very positive about Day 1's selection of dance music, including Special Disco Version, Duck Sauce, and Major Lazer. What did you think? Or did you just go on the (much better day) Sunday?

Pictures from Sunday are on the way. More from Saturday below...

I love you but I've chosen Moog
Moog Factory
Childish Gambino

"he Moog company pioneered the commercial manufacture of modular voltage-controlled analog synthesizer systems. Company founder Dr. Robert Arthur Moog had begun manufacturing and selling vacuum-tube theremins in kit form while he was a student in the early 1950s and marketed his first transistorized theremin kits in 1961. Moog became interested in the design and construction of complex electronic music systems in the mid 1960s and the burgeoning interest in his designs enabled him to establish a small company (R. A. Moog Co., which became Moog Music and later, Moog Electronics) to manufacture and market the new devices." [Wikipedia]
Thank you Google for not only honoring the great Robert Moog today on what would have been his 78th birthday, but for reminding us that we have this unposted final set of pictures from last year's Moogfest in Asheville, North Carolina....

Moogfest capped off three days of fun on 10/30 with sets from M83, James Murphy & Pat Mahoney (Special Disco Version), Ford & Lopatin, Passion Pit, The Drums, Baths, Ghostland Observatory, and many more. If you missed it, we previously posted pictures from the first and second days featuring Tangerine Dream, TV On The Radio, Asutra, Chromeo, and others on the first day, and Suicide, Amon Tobin: Isam, Toro Y Moi, Crystal Castles, Cant, and others (but no YACHT who had to cancel) on the second.

More pictures from the final day of Moogest 2011 (which you can check out after you're done playing with the Moog on Google's homepage), below...

SBTRKT

Back in June, we announced the killer initial lineup for Moogfest 2011 (October 28, 29, 30). That lineup just got even better with additions including TV on the Radio, Special Disco Version featuring James Murphy and Pat Mahoney, St. Vincent, SBTRKT, Flying Lotus, YACHT, John Maus, Araabmuzik Baths, Zomby, Active Child and more. It was also announced that Brian Eno, part of the initial lineup, will be presenting Brian Eno's 77 Million Paintings and "Illustrated Talks" as part of this year's fest.

The initial announcement also included Suicide, Tangerine Dream, Hans-Joachim Roedelius, Austra, M83, Little Dragon, Passion Pit, Toro y Moi, Moby (full band), The Flaming Lips, Battles, CANT, Brandt Brauer Frick (who will be on a US tour that hits Glasslands), and more.

Speaking of CANT (aka Chris Taylor of Grizzly Bear), he revealed the song "Believe" from his upcoming debut LP yesterday. Stream the track below. The album comes out September 13 on Chris' own Terrible Records. He's also got an upcoming tour surrounding Moogfest which includes a show on October 25 at Bowery Ballroom. Tickets are still on sale.

Speaking of SBTRKT and Little Dragon, Drumma Boy remixed the SBTRKT song with Little Dragon's Yukimi Nagano on lead vocals. Shabazz Palaces is also featured on the remix (compare that to Drake's version). Grab the track above via Gorilla vs Bear. Shabazz wrote on Facebook today, "Besides the release of Black Up, I don't think I've seen one article on here create such a surge of activity as this Wildfire Remix has. Amazing."

Sampha, who sings live with SBTRKT and on his album, also recently released his own song, "Indecision." Stream the track below. Moogfest is one of the stops on SBTRKT's recently announced US tour that also hits Bowery Ballroom on October 31 (with Araabmuzik) and Music Hall of Williamsburg on November 1. Tickets for both shows are still on sale.

Little Dragon plays a BV-presented Record Release show at Music Hall of WIlliamsburg TONIGHT (8/16). The show is sold out, but if you don't have tickets you can catch them in NYC again on their headlining tour which hits Terminal 5 on October 14. Tickets are still on sale.

Song streams and full Moogfest lineup below...

Foreign Born
Foreign Born

L.A. band Foreign Born will be taking Philly DFA party rockers Free Energy on tour with them this February and March. The bands roll into NYC for two shows, the first of which is March 11th at Mercury Lounge. Tickets are on sale. The second is the next night (3/12) at Knitting Factory. Tickets for that are up too.

Foreign Born's latest album, Person to Person, came out over the summer (two tracks from it are reposted above). Their new, vacationy/mock-adventure video for the summery song "Early Warnings" (it's always summer in L.A. I suppose) is posted below.

Before the tour, Free Energy will be playing other shows around NYC. They do a live set at the DFA Holiday Party happening at (Le) Poisson Rouge on Saturday, December 19th. Also at the party will be Special Disco Version (DFA's James Murphy, who produced Free Energy's forthcoming Stuck on Nothing, and Pat Mahoney), Holy Ghost, Matt Cash and Justin Chearno. Tickets ($5) are on sale. Flyer is below.

Free Energy, whose last NYC show was also a holiday party, are also playing Pianos on January 21st (tickets) and Brooklyn Bowl on Jan. 22nd (tickets).

The Juan Maclean isn't playing the DFA holiday party, and isn't playing Music Hall of Williamsburg on December 18th as originally scheduled. The Brooklyn show was cancelled after the untimely passing of Jerry Fuchs.

James and Pat (more by Ryan Muir)

LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy has revealed that he is involved in a new band who are set to release material on his label, DFA.

Murphy told NME.COM that the collective, featuring LCD cohort Pat Maloney plus former Hockey Night members Paul Sprangers and Scott Wells, haven't decided on a name yet.

"There's this rock band arguing about what name they are," Murphy told NME.COM. "They're from Minneapolis.

"We've gone back and forth for months, there's no way to say [what the band name is]. Pat and I are the drummer and the bass player [respectively]."

Murphy said he expected to release material by the new collective next year.

According to his spokesperson Murphy is not officially a core member of the band, although he produces and contributes bass.

Pat Maloney?? (like I should talk). James and Pat are also collectively known as Special Disco Version, and............

Hercules and Love AffairHercules and Love Affair

The B-52s are playing a show at Hammerstein Ballroom in NYC on November 1st, 2008. In 2007 they played a show on Halloween with The Rapture at Roseland. This year they play the day after Halloween with Hercules & Love Affair and Special Disco Version (James Murphy and Pat Mahoney deejaying). Both years cost $50. Tickets are on sale (@ 10am).

Hercules & Love Affair and The B-52's also have a bunch of other fall shows scheduled without each other. All dates are listed below....

"People hear that word disco, and they see bellbottoms and 'That '70s Show.' No, no, no," says Murphy. "This is real liberation music for people who know where to go. This is the real deal."

Special Disco Version @ MoMA (more by Ryan Muir)
Special Disco Version

"The frequently overlooked and undermined period of American musical history resulted in some of its richest material, inspiring Murphy as he built DFA; and creating the role of the DJ and structure of the nightclub as we now know them. With bands like DFA's own Hercules & Love Affair snagging critical and fan praise all over the world, the air is rife for a second disco revolution.

'Special Disco Version' is an old term for a dance interpretation of a pop song, now known as a remix. It was frequently printed on a circular sticker and slapped on the record's sleeve, left for Murphy and Mahoney to discover 30 years later as they plumbed the bins at New York record stores. SDV the party will bring back such gems - some of which are more rock than dance, and more minimal than orchestral - to curious dance floors, and mix them with new material. The fresh blend will rock the party in unprecedented ways, and offer LCD fans a new perspective on the musical roots of their favorite band.

'With SDV, I can keep experimenting with remixes that we're working on, I can keep playing new stuff, and I can keep finding old records,' says Murphy.

SDV's disco is The Bee Gees' 'You Should Be Dancin',' but not the original: The unreleased dub version. It's not Studio 54: It's The Loft, a NYC venue open at the same time, where the music was so much the focus that DJ David Mancuso would let songs finish in silence, rather than mix them into each other, so each could be appreciated on its own. It's Francis Grasso, the New York DJ who would blend Led Zeppelin and Aretha Franklin during marathon, 12-hour sets, and reportedly lived in his DJ booth at West Side club Salvation. 'How punk rock is that?' says Murphy."

Six upcoming Santos dates and other dates other places in the world....

[via NOT a private email or the DFA message board, but via motherfuckin' MySpace]

Go if you want, but understand the deal.

Sucky Losers

If there was any indication in James Murphy's posting that the first "Special Disco Version" party at Santos' Playhouse last night was going to be a private party, I wouldn't have posted it the way I did. According to one anonymous commenter,

this was clearly false advertising, since when does "5 dollar drinks and music" mean a few 500 pound bouncers and a coked up studio 54 wannabe with a 20 pg guest list on a wednesday night? i guess this just proves once again that we should all party in brooklyn
UPDATE: I should also mention that the night I went it wasn't like that. You were either on list or paid $5.00. It also wasn't packed at the time.
