High On Fire at Bowery Ballroom in 2012 (more by Fred Pessaro)
HoF

Scion A/V have announced the full lineup for their annual free Scion Rock Fest. This year's installment will take place in Pomona, CA on May 17. Judging by the number of acts (there are 26 all told) and the fact that it's all taking place on one day, it'll be another multiple-venue affair.

As usual, the lineup is a mix of crossover-friendly fan favorites (High On Fire, Machine Head, Red Fang, Crowbar, King Buzzo) with less obvious but still comparatively accessible acts (Midnight, Coffins, Big Business, etc.), and up-and-comers (Power Trip, Windhand, etc). You can check out the full lineup below. RSVPs for the festival will open Wednesday (3/26); keep an eye on Scion A/V's website to score your free spot.

Napalm Death at Maryland Deathfest 2012 (more by Fred Pessaro // BBG)
Napalm Death

Municipal Waste, Napalm Death and Exhumed will team up for a US tour together (!), calling on a rotating support cast of Vektor (who just played Saint Vitus), Dayglo Abortions, Attitude Adjustment, Speedwolf, Repulsion (who will play POTR East) and Dwarves.

Look for them to hit Fun Fun Fun Fest along the way, and NYC is in the crosshairs for this mammoth tour, hitting Gramercy Theater on October 27 with Vektor on board as support. Tickets are on sale, and tour flyer  and all listed tour dates are at the bottom of this post.

Municipal Waste released The Fatal Feast earlier this year, while Napalm Death released Utilitarian. I interviewed "Barney" of Napalm Death earlier this year if you missed it as well.

Meanwhile, Blag Dahlia of Dwarves will be in NYC very soon.

All dates and the MWaste tour flyer are below.

Speedwolf @ Acheron
Speedwolf

Speedwolf is currently touring off of Ride with Death, the band's latest LP out now via Hell's Headbangers. That tour kicked off in early March and included a stop at a BV SXSW Day Party in Austin before they headed towards the Northeast to spread more mayhem. The Denver Motorhead-worshipping speed freaks played Acheron on March 29th with support from Coffin Dust, Dethroned Emperor and Salo. Pictures and video from that show are below...

Alcest @ Lovejoys
BrooklynVegan Day Party at Lovejoys on 3/17

By the time that Hull hit the stage at around 2:20pm, the deal was sealed; intimate Austin bar/venue Lovejoys was officially one-in-one-out until we closed the doors. The Saturday BrooklynVegan day show during SXSW included the awesome lineup of Alcest (their only Austin show), Nachtmystium (with Will Lindsay and Sanford Parker in tow), The Atlas Moth, Pallbearer, Speedwolf, Hull, Bruce Lamont with Man's Gin (their only show), Mutilation Rites and Vestiges. All of the bands ruled and I can't thank them enough.

Vestiges opened the party at 12:15 to a relatively large crowd of people (considering the inevitable hangovers from the night prior), and proceeded to wake us all with their spacey hybrid of black metal, hardcore, doom, and crust. A truly amazing band that is definitely worth looking out for. Mutilation Rites followed with new bassist Ryan Jones (Wetnurse/Today is The Day) in tow, but seemed no worse for the changeover; the band's punk-y black-metal-thrash ripped as usual.

Bruce Lamont and Man's Gin collaborated next, using everything from guitar, sax, and bass ukelele in their renditions of Man's Gin songs. It was a special one-off collaboration during the festival, and one that I was grateful to be hosting in such a small space. Hats off to Erik, Josh & the Man's Gin crew, as well as Bruce Lamont.

After that relatively low-key set, of course Hull brought it up a few notches with their thundering post-metal stomp, the first of three shows for the band that day. The rattling doom power of Hull live cannot be denied, but neither can the Motorhead-y beer-swilling pummel of Speedwolf who followed directly after. Speedwolf is currently on a US tear, so look for them at a town near you (including NYC).

Pallbearer @ Lovejoys
BrooklynVegan Day Party at Lovejoys on 3/17

Pallbearer, one of my favorite bands from SXSW this year, are undeniably great and just destroyed after Speedwolf. Their melodic doom riffs and soaring vocals owe a lot to the doom-fathers of yesteryear but still reimagine some of those approaches on their stunner of an LP Sorrow & Extinction. Pick it up if you can, and don't miss them when they come to NYC with Loss!

The Atlas Moth and Nachtmystium, out on tour together, played the following two sets with the latter featuring Sanford Parker on keys and Will Lindsay (Indian, Middian, etc) on bass. The Atlas Moth was also in a different configuration, with Andrew Ragin out with medical issues and replaced with his brother-in-law and former member of Stabbing Westward Marcus Eliopulos. Despite configuration changes, both bands were fantastic.

Alcest, who in no way resembles a metal band other than in pedigree, closed out the night. The French quartet's focus is on shoegaze-influenced beauty and were a perfect way to end the hectic and brutal day at Lovejoys. Alcest are on the road in the US, and will play NYC at Public Assembly next week with another BV-SXSW-show-alumnus, Deafheaven (I'll be DJing).

Yet another successful year at Lovejoys in Austin, and I'd like to send a big thank you to the staff, Jester King for the free suds, all of the bands, and most importantly all of the fans who came for the day. Thank you so much, and I can't wait until next year!

More pictures from the whole day, below...

Speedwolf at a BV-and-friends SXSW party in 2010 (more by Diana Lee Zadlo)
Speedwolf

Speedwolf has nothing to do with a certain three-piece from the Bay-Area and their awesome LP that featured a song of the same title. But like High on Fire, Denver's Speedwolf worship the same amphetamine-fueled Motorhead riffs that influenced a generation of punks and metalheads, blending crusty-punk-rock with alcohol-drenched blackened mischief.

It's been close to two years since I came across the ripping Speedwolf demo and invited them to play a day party during SXSW 2010. Since that demo, Speedwolf has only focused their vision further, concentrating their songwriting to a fine knife point and eventually arriving at their latest LP due on 11/22 via Hell's Headbangers, Ride With Death.

Ride With Death rips with the urgency of any of the aforementioned, as well as fellow label breathren Midnight (who have a new album). And just like its title suggests, Ride With Death is the ideal soundtrack of the Reaper firing up his Harley with a half-finished bottle of Jack Daniels in hand. Speedwolf recently posted three songs for streaming at HHR, another at Crustcake, and are now streaming a fifth song,"Time To Annihilate", here for the first time. Stream all five songs and check out a campy video for one track below...

Boston Strangler You might have missed it, but Boston Strangler released an incredible demo with the ultra-limited Outcast cassette last year. The band, which is primarily the brainchild of vocalist Ban Reilly (also of the incredible Scapegoat) (get their latest now... highly reccomended), has enlisted members of Mind Eraser, Rival Mob, Social Circkle, and a few notable others to churn out some incredible early 80s-style negative hardcore. The band plays a rare show at Acheron on September 17th with Beware (mems of Mother of Mercy). check out some live video below.

The show cancellation count keeps growing. The previously discussed cancellations of shows at the Acheron (including Victims/Defeatist on Sunday), is joined by the latest victim of Irene, Vreid, Kampfar, Necronomicon, and Grafvolluth at Europa. As more shows cancel, we'll keep you posted.

Corrupted have released their previously discussed new LP, Garten Der Unbewusstheit. Look for it at your favorite distro like Aquarius or Crucial Blast.

Unsane is working on new music.

Yob is releasing Live at Roadburn 2010 via Burning World Records on CD/DVD on September 1st with vinyl to follow. Preorder it now. For those curious about the video, stream it in its entirety below.

Easy Action (with John Brannon of Negative Approach) will team with Kicking Spit (who we previously profiled) and Foster Care to play Acheron on September 26th. Negative Approach makes their return to Fun Fun Fun Fest in November.

Krallice played House of Vans on Wednesday, and in addition to their previously discussed show at Union Pool on 9/17 with Urfaust/Black Anvil, the band has added a show at Death By Audio on 9/14 with Wolves In The Throne Room and Thou.

DC's Give will headline Acheron on 9/9 with Devotion and Too Many Voices (mems of Kill Your Idols).

Karma To Burn are back on the road, and hit Saint Vitus with awesome Black Pyramid and Bezoar on Sept 8th. Full tour schedule is below. KTB's newest album, V, is out now.

Stream three new Speedwolf songs from their forthcoming LP on Hells Headbangers.

All Karma To Burn tour dates, more suggested NYC shows, and some video of Boston Strangler as well as classic video of Sulaco, Spazz, Crossed Out, and Neurosis, below...

Grace of Landmine Marathon (by Samantha Marble)
Landmine Marathon

A hearty thanks go out to everyone who showed up to the BrooklynVegan/1000 Knives/Crustcake show at Hoeks Death Metal Pizza on 3/18! Though the hot sun was blaring down, the bands in the shade somehow made it hotter with their scorched earth policy and unbridled energy.

Trash Talk was beyond violent, The Atlas Moth was soaring/epic as usual, The Funeral Pyre was furious and powerful (as I found out the previous night), Book of Black Earth's crusty metal was ferocious, and Kill The Client was just as punishing as they were at Emo's. Due to some scheduling issues, we bumped Speedwolf to the last slot after Trash Talk and I missed them entirely, though reviews from the trustworthy point toward badass. Zoroaster played mostly newer material from their promising new doom-crust-leaning LP, and managed to hold back their massive firepower on stage to just "loud as fuck" as opposed to "bleeding ears". Landmine Marathon were fun and elblematic of what is great about metal today. And Coffinworm? Just plain sick blackened doom.

More pics and and a bunch of videos are below...

Hoeks

So a few weeks ago,I sat down with Crustcake.com and Rich Hall (1000 Knives) to decide the greatest Austin venue for a metal show. BrooklynVegan metal is already going HUGE this year between a show on 3/17 at Emo's (with Torche, Fucked Up, Salome, Dark Castle, The Atlas Moth, Javelina and more TBA), and another day party at Red 7 on 3/20 (lineup TBA), so we figured why not go small. REALLY small.

BrooklynVegan/Crustcake/1000 Knives Present a Pizza Party at Hoeks Death Metal Pizza! The day show happening on Thursday, March 18th will be headlined by a special guest we can't announce yet and feature nine of our favorite destroyers. This show promises to be one of the biggest- um, I mean SMALLEST metal shows during SXSW. Who's on board?

lineup:
* Special guest
* Zoroaster
* Coffinworm
* Kill The Client
* Landmine Marathon
* Book of Black Earth
* The Atlas Moth
* The Funeral Pyre
* Speedwolf
Anyone from or who's been to Austin knows Hoeks. Even if you've never eaten there you can't miss their appropriately themed locale, conveniently located right on 6th Street between Red River and Neches. It's practically spitting distance from Emo's. The show itself will take place in the new venue that is actually the backyard of the restaurant.

The party kicks off at noon. More details are on the way. Check out the flyer and some videos of other recent shows at Hoeks below...

Salome at BV-BBG at CMJ (more by Samantha Marble)
Salome

Wow just turned into OMFG. Wolves In The Throne Room and Salome have been announced as support for the previously discussed 3/11 Shrinebuilder show at NYU. Ticket Info is forthcoming, but NYU students can expect to pay $2 and non-NYU-ers pay a whopping $5.

And while we are on the topic of killer bands, we'd like to announce that Salome will play the two-stage BrooklynVegan Day Party on March 17th at Emo's in Austin, Texas! For those counting at home, that's Salome plus Torche and Fucked Up! More artist announcements are on the way.

Salome will also play the 20 Buck Spin / Profound Lore official SXSW showcase at Headhunters in Austin on 3/19. As expected, the labels have teamed up for a killer lineup of underground metal greats: Yakuza, Liturgy, The Endless Blockade, Coffinworm, White Mice, + two more bands TBA.

That same night (3/19) at Spiro's, just down the street from the 20 Buck Spin/Profound Lore Showcase will be the WFMU/Aquarius showcase which, much like last year, is brimming with great and forward thinking music of heavy/punk persuasion. Liturgy will also be featured at the two-stage show along with Speedwolf, Iron Man, Moon Duo, Shit and Shine, Pierced Arrows, Dengue Fever, Epileptinomicon, Drunkdriver, Home Blitz, Headdress, Sonny & the Sunsets, True Widow, and Todd. For more on the upcoming WFMU show, head to their site. Decisions!

Drunkdriver's other upcoming shows include other SXSW gigs and Cake Shop in NYC on 3/14 with Todd.

Pierced Arrows are scheduled for two NYC area shows with Lullabye Arkestra, March 5th at Mercury (tix) and March 6th at Maxwell's (tix).
